AMID the heavy music, the laughter, the sound of wine and blood spilling everywhere, the gasps and the moans from variety of strangers as they drown themselves in blood and sex, I heard her. First, it was her footsteps. They were careful and light as a feather as if she was afraid to make a single sound, afraid to be noticed.
Then it was her voice.
She cleared her throat. “Pardon my intrusion, your Majesty,” she said. Her voice was soft, but it was devoid of emotion humans ought to have. “I’ve brought the file you requested.”
“Human, if you know you’re intruding, then you shouldn’t have come at all! You are not welcome here. Shoo,” the female Vampire who was with me commented just when I was about to speak.
My forehead creased. I took my hand off the woman’s thigh and released her neck before looking at her. I don’t remember her name. I only remember that she was from one of the twelve noble families in the Kingdom. Other than that, everything about her was forgettable.
If not for her blood that was not even that delicious, I would not waste a second with her. I stared at her blankly and said, “You are the one who ought to leave and not my secretary.”
She was stunned. The reason was obvious. It was her first time to get thrown away and be humiliated. I heard she was called the social butterfly in every party.
But not in my party.
“Your Majesty? Are you choosing that ugly duckling over me?”
I chuckled. “You make me laugh. You are not even a swan yourself. Leave, whoever you are. And never come back. Don’t make me say it twice.”
When she remained standing there with that aghast expression, I motioned my hand, the woman flew toward the door. The knights quickly opened it for her. She was still screaming her heart out when they led her outside. I could still hear a commotion, but it was nothing the knights couldn’t handle.
In an instant, all the noise had stopped as every single Vampire turned to look at me. Men, women, young and old, I could see them all fidgeting except for one person.
Kate.
Damon, the General of the Vampire army who was sitting in front of me clicked his tongue and whispered, “Claudia’s brother is my friend, but I can’t help her this time. It was her fault. She shouldn’t have done that.”
“Done what?” the woman near him asked.
“She pushed the ‘Kate’ button. Her biggest mistake.”
I shrugged, stood up, and turned to Kate, my secretary. I saw her flinch a while ago. “Are you okay?”
She lowered her head. “You didn’t have to do that, Your Majesty.”
“Are you worried about her? She’s a Vampire. She’ll live. If she doesn’t, remind me to send flowers to her funeral.”
Kate just sighed and adjusted her thick glasses. And then she took out her handkerchief and handed it to me. Our fingers touched and slowly, I began to calm down. It was quick, but it was enough for her warmth to spread all over my fingertips.
I used the handkerchief to wipe the blood off my mouth before I glanced at her who remain unfazed despite the debauchery she was seeing around the hall. A faint smile curved my lips as I gave her back the tiny piece of cloth. It had the same scent as her. She smelled of roses, it was not too strong, just enough to tease the senses. Was she staying in the garden before I summoned her?
“Thank you, Kate,” I said after she gave me the envelope.
She nodded. “Anything else, Your Majesty?”
“No. You can go.”
She bowed. “Thank you, Your Majesty.”
And then she left as quickly as she came, not bothering to throw a glance at the people around her. I still have no idea whether it was out of fear or she just didn’t think the guests were worth her precious time. She was a mystery, the only woman whose mind I couldn’t grasp, like the black rose that she was, the rare female humans who served the Vampires.
Black Roses were the people we couldn’t compel to do our bidding. But they were loyal and their blood tasted good.
As always, as Kate passed by the guests, she stood out. It was not because she was the only human among the blood-suckers in this party. It was the odd way she dressed herself. The Vampires were the ancient ones. Some, like me, had lived for hundreds of years. But no woman here had worn the clothes she wore, making her appear more ancient than the Vampires.
Kate Morelli was trapped in an era which she didn’t even get to live in, all thanks to her grandmother who raised her. She was the youngest in this Castle yet, she looked older with her polite expression, with her black hair tied in a bun, and with her big, black thick glasses which almost covered half her face. She also wore her signature long plain black, turtleneck dress with sleeves so long that only her fingers would show as if she was afraid to reveal even a little skin. She paired it with her old black boots.
That was how Kate found me. In that very dress.
“She’s really not the type to talk,” Damon commented after a while. “Normally, the Vampires would be so excited over a Black Rose’s blood. They would try to do anything to win her. But the males here didn’t even throw her a glance. Her lack of fashion sense saved her.”
My brows furrowed. “Are you saying that my secretary is ugly?”
“I’m just saying that Vampires like things that are easy on the eyes. And Miss Morelli is obviously not that type of person. So, she’s out of their list. Anyway, Claudia will not let this slide, Your Majesty. I would wager all the blood bags in my house that she will tattle to her Daddy dearest about this,” Damon added as we watched Kate approach the door. “Their family is the most powerful among the twelve families. Being their only daughter, they would surely cause a stir.”
So, Claudia was her name.
“And what harm could those little bugs do to me? This is my party, my castle, and my rules, Damon. Besides, if I allowed that woman to stay for a second more, she would have ripped Kate’s throat and drain her of her blood. I read it in her thoughts. And I need my secretary alive,” I said after I took the goblet he offered and finished the blood inside in one drink.
Among the guests here, Damon was the closest to me. He was like a brother to me. We had fought together in the battlefield too many times before.
“Because she once saved your life from the Hunters?”
I sat and leaned on my chair. That was only the time when the guests began to relax and continued with their business.
“Because she is the only woman who didn’t fall for me. Nothing more, nothing less. Work life is so much easier now that I have Kate. She is pretty good at her job, smart, and very dedicated. The only thing she lacks is some decent clothes no matter how much I pay her but other than that, I think she’s perfect. I can’t lose her at a time like this. She still has so much work to do.”
Damon laughed. “So, in the end, it all comes down to work?”
“What else could be the reason? Kate is the only person who became my secretary and lasted for two years. And I intend to keep her in my office longer than that.”
I know the rumors spreading around me about the only rock that I kept in a treasure box filled with diamonds. But I don’t give a damn because right now, I’m quite fond of that rock. And I will let no one harm the rock while I’m still using it.
I threw the documents at Damon’s face when I saw mischief dancing in his eyes. “That is the latest report about the Hunters. Gather a search troop as soon as possible and find every single one of them. You can kill the rest of them except for one person. Their leader. Present him to me. I will end him myself.”
All of a sudden, Damon’s face became dead serious. The issue about the Hunters will never be something to smile about. We had wiped them all out before, including their leader who I killed with my bare hands in a war two years ago. But a rat managed to escape. It was the son of their leader. And that son rebuilt their organization.
“As you command, Your Majesty.”
I didn’t get to respond when I caught a familiar face in the crowd. She was looking straight into my eyes. There was a devious glimmer in her eyes which I loathed. When I stood up, the stinky witch disappeared. But I could still hear her voice in my head.
“One day, a woman will become the death of you, Zachary Collins! You will die by her hands! But before that, you will experience a pain like no other… just like how I felt after you mercilessly killed my lover!”
I gritted my teeth and was about to order a search operation when I froze. My throat was burning up. My temperature became higher than usual. And my stomach tightened. But why? It was not that time of the month yet. I was not supposed to feel this way this early.
“Your Majesty, is something wrong?” Damon asked.
I clenched my hands. In an instant, my eyes had changed its color and became red as the veins in my neck and arms became more visible. I didn’t answer and just grabbed the first woman in front of me. I buried my fangs in her neck, fed on her blood and energy, but it was not enough.
“Your eyes changed! Damn, it’s that blood witch’s curse acting up again,” Damon cussed. “How the hell did this happen? It’s still too soon for this! Hold on. I will summon them in your room, Your Majesty, and take you there.”
I knew the General was still talking. But I could no longer process what he was saying.
More.
I needed more. That was all I know.
I grabbed another woman and heard her wince as I fed on her energy. But I still felt so thirsty. Their blood was no longer sufficient for me. I roared as the pain all over my body grew. I shut my eyes and tried to feed on as much energy as I could. The music stopped as I gathered the energy of the rest of the Vampires around me.
I could hear their sobs, their voices begging me to stop.
When I opened my eyes, I saw them on the floor, now weak and shivering, including Damon. I quickly disappeared and went to my quarters. I needed to get away from everyone as soon as possible. Or else, I might kill all of them this time.
But I caught a whiff of Kate’s faint smell near my room. My stomach growled; my chest pounded. My head was telling me not to search for her, to just lock myself up in my quarters until the curse subside. But my body was saying something else.
I wanted to warn her not to come close when I heard her footsteps. But my voice wouldn’t come out. When I tried speaking, I only ended up snarling like the hungry monster that I am.
But then she appeared in the hallway. She was taken aback when she saw me.
“Your Majesty? Why do you look like that? You’re sweating a lot. Are you sick? Did something happen to you?” she hurried toward my direction.
And before I knew it, I already held her head and sank my teeth onto her pale neck.
She screamed.
(Kate)“WHO ARE you? And what are you doing inside His Majesty’s quarters? If you don’t want to get hurt, drop your weapon, raise your hands, and face me.”I flinched. I didn’t know I’d get caught. The inspection around this area took place half an hour ago. Why did the guard come back just when I was almost done copying the files? I quickly grabbed my flash drive and fixed my mask before turning to the guard.I did what I was told. I dropped my dagger before slowly turning to him.“You haven’t answered my question yet.”This was one demanding guard. If I speak, regardless of my mask, he would know who I am. And I can’t risk that.“Are you the son of Dela Torre, the Hunter? The one we’ve been trying to search? So, you finally came on your own accord, huh. How foolishly brave. You came right on time, though. This is my chance to earn the King’s favor!” he exclaimed; his expression was already celebrating as if he had caught me in his hands. If I remember it right, his name was Parker,
THE PAIN quickly disappeared that it almost became a memory as ecstasy followed right after. Zackary lifted me and wrapped my thighs around his waist. In a blink of an eye, we were already inside his quarters. He pinned me against the wall, his tongue was stroking mine, gently at first, as if he was trying to calm me down.I could push Zackary away. I could try to fight until he recovered his senses, until he was back to being sane again. Because there was no way that someone like him would hold someone like me.But the instant he took me in his arms, I was suddenly reminded of the reason why I stayed in this domain even when I shouldn’t.Seconds later and Zackary must have realized that being slow was not his thing. He tore my clothes and underwear while his mouth was still on mine. He was assaulting my tongue and was touching me in places no one had ever seen or touched before. I shivered when I realized that I was now completely naked before him.But the coldness didn’t last long.
I WOKE up when I felt something hard inside me. That was when I realized that Zackary’s shaft was still buried deep inside me. I could feel his warmth flowing into me. He was embracing me from behind and by the sound of his breathing, he seemed to have fallen asleep as well.He didn’t pull out as if even in his sleep, he didn’t want to let me go. Surprisingly, my body didn’t feel sore at all. When I glanced at my wristwatch, it was already ten in the morning. And yet, the entire Castle seemed to be quiet. Was it still because of the lingering effect of what Zachary did to them last night? After a while, I shook my head. My life was already so messy. I had no time to think about other things. All I know was that I have to escape now.Alucard had found me which just meant that I couldn’t stay in this Castle anymore. When I tried to move, Zachary stirred and squeezed my nipple. I bit my lower lip to suppress my moan especially when I felt his thing getting harder inside me. But I could s
“MOMMY!”My heart pounded when I heard that voice. When I turned around, I saw a little girl running towards me. I’m guessing she was around five years old. She had chubby cheeks, curly blonde hair, and bright blue eyes. She was beaming as she tried to reach out her tiny hands to me. The sight tugged at my heartstrings. She looked so beautiful and yet, so familiar which was odd because this was my first time seeing her.I should know because I would have remembered that face. That was a face that was not easy to forget. She stopped when she was in front of me. And when she smiled at me, my chest swelled with so much warmth, joy, and pride.Wait. Pride? But why?I didn’t even know her. But somehow, it felt like my heart knew her, like I was gazing at a face that I had known my whole life which was really weird. And when she held my hand, all of her dainty fingers were clasped on mine, it felt cathartic that I found myself suddenly tearing up. What was this feeling? Who was she? How cou
“IT WAS truly a pleasure working with your brother. He will be deeply missed,” Elliot said.Out of the hundreds of children that were brought in the Dela Torre residence, only Terrence and I were the ones allowed to inherit the surname. The first lesson that Leonel Dela Torre, the former King of the Hunters, taught us was to get rid of our human emotions. We were raised not as humans, but as robots, who could only move based on his commands. We were the seniors’ possessions. They were our owners. The only way you could get to own yourself was to rise to the top. That was the reason why Terrence and I strived to be better than anyone else. And we achieved that. In the end, we were acknowledged as Leonel’s children and became members of the family we hated. We were sick of the rules. And yet, we follow them because once you get inside the Hunters’ territory, there will be no way out for you.Others who tried to seek freedom were branded as traitors. And traitors, for the seniors’ vocabu
I TOOK a step closer to Maximo, patted his shoulder, and whispered in his ear. “I may have forgotten how to use a gun, but I haven’t forgotten how to kill, Maximo. So, consider this your lucky day. Since I’m still mourning, I don’t feel like killing anyone today. Through this, I hope you could stop worrying uselessly about your Queen. Worry about your tongue instead. Better yet, just give all your concern to your friends who could lose their eyesight any moment.”I glanced at my wristwatch and yawned. “This is exactly what I am talking about. I had already wasted three minutes of my time. If only you are wealthier than me, I would have asked you to compensate me for those minutes wasted. But since you cannot afford my time, I would be considerate just this once. If you test my temper again, you will lose not only your tongue, Maximo. It’ll be your heart the next time around. So, if you can’t beat me, at least, don’t annoy me. Do you understand?”Maximo’s eyes looked at me with absolut
WHEN Zachary’s authoritative green eyes glanced at the audience, they began screaming his name. Nevertheless, he subdued everyone to obedience with just one look. And he knew it. He knew the impact he had on people. The host and the crowd, had become his fans in an instant. They were silenced just like what Zachary wanted. And I was sure that the humans watching at home had been like that, too.My hands instinctively went to my stomach as a bitter smile formed on my lips. ‘Baby, that’s your Daddy.’“Many people had been curious about you for such a long time, Mr. Collins. What made you decide to finally reveal yourself to the public?” the host asked when she recovered from fangirling.Zachary looked straight at the camera and said, “I’m looking for someone.”The host gasped. I did, too. Fear started to crawl back into my system as I watched how Zachary’s eyes glowed mysteriously. But that person couldn’t be me, right?I was only a secretary. I was a nobody in the city. The King would
I SNIFFED. “That can’t be true. You hate me, don’t you?”“I wanted to hate you for leaving your King behind, but I couldn’t,” Zachary replied tenderly.“Weren’t you looking for me to punish me? To kill me?”A smile played at the corner of his lips. “You are still so naïve, Kate. Didn’t you know? There are many ways to punish someone without killing them. One of them is this,” he added as he pushed me down the bed. When he snapped, in a blink of an eye, I was no longer wearing anything. And when I felt my cheeks turning red out of embarrassment, he smirked before he ran his tongue over my neck. “Damn,” he whispered, his breath was hitting my ear. “Had I known that this was the best way to stop you from crying, I would have stripped you naked as soon as I saw tears falling down your cheeks.”I had a system error that night. What happened between me and the King was nothing but a system error on my part. That was what I had been telling myself again and again after discovering that I was
(Zachary) IT WAS almost five in the afternoon. It was time to pick up swan from her campus. I was about to call the twins who were running around the lawn when I saw how Mira swooped in and carried Alain in one hand and Algernon in another. The twins were playing with their guards who were now sweating so hard. After getting caught by their sister, the boys pouted and lowered their heads. Their playfulness had never worked on my eldest. “What time is it now?” she asked the twins. “Five,” Alain answered. “It’s still three minutes and eleven seconds before five in the afternoon,” Algernon added. “Aren’t you forgetting something?” Mira asked again. The twins gasped and together, they said, “It’s time to pick up Mommy from the human realm!” “You finally remembered. Now go to your rooms and fix yourselves. Don’t come to her campus looking like that. Both of you were the ones who insisted on picking her up today and yet, you forgot?” The t
(Kate)IN THE middle of checking the photos the butler had sent regarding Algernon, I noticed Jonathan peeking at his wristwatch. There were more photos to look at. Others were about Mira. She sent the pictures herself. She was getting along really well with her friends. She had completely adapted to her hybrid life.Whenever I’m away, I can’t be at ease unless I see the reports about my children. Even with the blood link, the trauma the witches and the hunters had caused me will take a while to get rid of. And I was glad that Mira understood. She was the one who volunteered to send her daily pictures to me to keep me posted especially whenever they had school activities. But in time, I know the trauma will disappear. The other photos were regarding my husband and Alain who had caused troubles in the office. Violet sent them to me after giving me a call since she visited Damon there and brought him his blood bag. He caught the general in the l
“GREETINGS, your majesty and the prince,” everybody greeted. The women held onto the bottom of their skirts because the wind kept blowing them away.I held my little guy’s hand and put it down. The wind vanished. But when he looked up at me, he looked like he was about to cry as if I ruined his fun.“Don’t look at Daddy like that. Here. I brought your favorite toy,” I said and gave him his teddy bear. His smile came back as he grabbed the toy.The people sighed, relieved. But the aftermath of the trouble my son unconsciously caused was still palpable. I snapped my finger. In a blink of an eye, everything had turned back to normal. When we rode the elevator, Damon caught up to us. After bowing to give his greetings, he looked at me curiously.“My wife is in a meeting. I can’t leave the twins under the servants’ care. They already looked so stressed. I had to bring one of them. That’s the only way to appease my wife as well. I didn’t want her to worry all day,” I said before he could as
SEEING my wife like this reminded me of the phone call I received while I was still inspecting the border. That was around six in the evening.‘Your majesty?’ she asked in a low voice.I smiled and loosened my tie. There was something in her voice which made me feel hot even if it was windy outside. ‘Yes, swan?’‘What time are you going home tonight?’‘I’m not sure. There are still areas we haven’t visited yet. Why? Do you miss me already? What’s up with this sudden call?’ I teased.I never needed phone calls when I could always teleport whenever I miss her which happens constantly. Most of the time, I would show up in her workplace or in the twins’ room to steal a kiss from her and if I get lucky, we would do it quickly. I just could not get enough of her.I guess I never gave swan the chance to miss me that’s why after two years of our marriage, this was her first time calling me first.‘Nothing. I just called to say that… I’m not wearing any underwear tonight. And I’ve already prep
Two years later…I KNEW I would find her here. These past few months, I rarely see my wife in our chamber. She was constantly in Alain and Algernon’s room. Even if our twins had their own servants, she was still hands-on when it came to them.It was past eight in the evening. I normally come home at five in the afternoon but today, I went with the knights for the monthly inspection around the borders. Mira greeted me at the doorway a while ago and told me that she already had an early dinner with her mother. Still, I caught her stealing a blood bag in the fridge for a snack. When I heard that her mother was sleeping upstairs, I sent our eldest to bed after her snack and after monitoring her mana and her blood intake since today was Thursday and it was my turn to monitor it to keep her mana and her powers in check. The kingdom may be peaceful now and there were no more threats but after what Kate and Terrence had experienced, it would not hurt to be careful. Our children’s blood was li
(Zachary)I FINALLY get it. What they say about family, about parents. I thought I knew enough about parental love after being a father but Dayanara Gregory had shown us what a mother’s love was and why it was important.I had seen it when Swan covered for Mira after she bit her, when she looked at our daughter with wonder and affection in her eyes as she watched her play in the garden, when she brushed her hair, when she worried whether she had taken her meals or not, and when she kissed her at night as she wished her a sweet dream.Lastly, I saw it the night Swan was shackled. I saw how she strived to make sense of the situation when Mira ran to her, barefooted and with tears flowing down her cheeks. I saw how she broke her heart to appease our daughter’s heart while I stood there, unsure what word to say and what step to make, because I never understood the gravity of having a parent and losing one.All I understood was the pain of a husban
(Damon)ON the way to the castle, no music could be heard. Unlike before, there were no festivities. There were no children playing on the streets either. All the establishments were closed. The people I saw were wearing white. They hung lanterns in every house as their way of sending the queen off believing that the lanterns will light up her path towards another world.I continued to drive and stopped in front of the castle. The gates were opened for everyone who wished to visit the queen. There were more and more people coming by. I stepped out of the car and instantly heard the sound coming from the flute. It was from Jonathan who was in the garden, her highness’ favorite spot.He looked so lost as he played the flute which gave off a heart-wrenching sound. He hadn’t spoken a single word since yesterday. He hadn’t changed his clothes either. The queen’s blood on his uniform was still there. Even his hand still had her blood on
I KNOW it was wrong to feel this way because swan is still alive. She has to be alive or else, all those traveling, all those twelve duels just for one silly flower would not mean a thing, or else I would regret not being by her side for the past two days as she waited for me while enduring so much. “Swan, hang in there,” I whispered and forced a smile. “We are about to reach the top. Just take a nap for the meantime. I know you are tired. I will wake you when we get there.” It was already bright when we reached the top. I took the final step and stopped to look around us. The wind blew. My chest felt like it was being squeezed when I said, “Wake up, swan. Open your eyes, come on. We are on top of the mountain now. We fulfilled your wish. Do you see it? The scenery is as lovely as you said.” Again, there was silence. “You also said that it would feel liberating when you are one with nature like this. But swan, I don’t feel liberated at all. The beauty I
I WAS stunned. I could not move. I could not even speak. But when Kate was about to fall, my body automatically moved to catch her. The wind and the rain had stopped at once. The hunters vanished one by one as if their lives were linked with hers. Blood was still gushing from her chest when she tried to open her eyes. They were back to being blue.Jonathan pulled out the sword from her and kneeled before us.Kate proudly smiled at him and said, “T-thank you, Jonathan. You did well.” And then she turned to me. “Where have you been? I missed you, my husband.”I held her hand. “Doctor Juno is preparing the medicine. Wait a little more, swan. I will take you back home and-““No, Zach. I don’t think I could survive this anymore,” she whispered as she caressed my face. “Love, what took you so long? Where were you? I waited for you.”Tears streamed my cheeks. “I’m sorry, swan. I’m sorry for leaving your side. But why did you do that? I don’t need to live forever! What the hell am I going to
