Emily's POV
A sigh escaped from my lips which made Aiden stare at me with a look I didn't quite understand.
“Why do you hesitate?” He asked me.
“Many reasons.” I responded.
“Care to tell me?”
“Well, I thought this would be my final resting place. A place I can live in until I die.”
“Well, you will die if you get involved with my brother so snap out of your feelings and do the right thing.” He said sharply.
“And the right thing to do is for me to leave this place.”
“Ditto.” Aiden said after me which made me nod and exhale.
“So… how do I escape? Your brother could kill me when he finds out.” I said and Aiden nodded.
“Just leave this to me, I'll find a way for you. In the meantime, act normal around others. But make sure your things are packed just in case. And don't take too much stuff with you.”
“Okay,” I said and he nodded.
“Wait, what about the gate pass? I don't have it,”
“You can steal it from my brother somehow.”
“Leaving the risky business to me, why would I risk my life to get the gate pass?”
“Because Aiden sees you as his soon-to-be queen. He thinks you have no idea of what he's about to do to you. It's way easier for you to use that ideology that he has against you, for your good.”
“Fine,”
I was about to leave but then he grabbed my hand, causing me to turn towards him with my hair dancing all over my back. I met with his eyes.
“Remember this, even after you leave this place, you can't trust anyone.”
“I can't?”
He nodded.
“And what about you?” I asked.
“Dang, don't trust me too.” Then he leaned in and kissed my lips. I was too stunned to move, and when he pulled away, I touched my lips and looked at him.
“Why did you do it?” I asked. “What if your brother smells you on me? What then?”
“If my brother didn't see you first, I'd definitely develop a crush on you.”
I blushed but then I wiped my lips with my index finger.
“Don't ever do that again.”
“Okay,” He nodded. “I just thought of something,”
“And what is that?”
“Well, it's not easy but you should do it.” He said. “There is a safe apartment where whores in the kingdom reside. You should go there and disguise as one of them.”
“Where is the apartment?”
“It's at least a mile away from here. But they'll come here on Sunday. When they do, I will get you one of their outfits, and you can leave when they do.”
“Okay,” I said.
“You can head back now.” He said.
“Fine,” I said and headed back through the passageway, then I passed by the hallway until I got into my room- the room Alan has me live in. When I got into my room, my heart started beating fast. “Holy moon, help me.”
I shut the door, stripped out of my clothes and went to the bathroom.
As soon as the water hit my skin, I shuddered and started crying out loud, but with the water pouring onto me, no one could hear my tears and this made me feel more comfortable. This was a moment of truth, the moment of vulnerability that I had drifting over me and there was no one but me to bear witness. It was beautiful.
Tears rolled down my cheeks and I sobbed some more.
“I have no home. No family. I'm alone in this world. Would this pain last forever?”
Soon, I turned off the shower and put a towel around me as I walked to my bedroom.
What was the use of crying? It did nothing for me but made me feel weaker. I kept my head up high and walked in front of the mirror. Alan's scent had left me now. I dropped my towel and put on a red dress. I looked beautiful in front of the mirror but I wanted to be more. More than just my looks.
There was a knock on the door which made me frown.
“Who is it?” I asked but no response.
Then I walked over to the door and turned the door knob. When it twisted open, I took a step back in fear. It was the king, Alan. I tried to act normal around him but my heart could not stop pounding after the words that I heard from his twin brother, Aiden.
“My queen,” Alan said coolly.
“M-my Liege,” I responded, bowing slightly.
Alan invited himself into the room and looked around as though sniffing for if anyone else was in the room.
“My liege, what are you looking for?”
Alan turned back to me. His eyes were hollow and this made me frightful of what would happen next. I did not expect him to come to me by this time. Didn't he have other things to do?
“My liege?” He said questionably. “What did I say to you the other time?”
“That I should call you Alan when we're alone.” I said quietly.
“Then why aren't you doing that?”
I sighed. “W-well.”
Alan closed the distance between us and lifted up my chin so I was staring up at him.
“Beautiful.” He said. “You'll do well as my queen. What do you think?” He asked, grabbing my wrist and pulling me to stand in front of the mirror.
“W-well, I haven't really thought about it, my liege.”
“You have nothing to think about because I rarely take no for an answer.”
I felt goosebumps all over my body and this made me somewhat scared. Was Alan going to show me his true colours before I became his queen?
I didn't want the situation to escalate so I decided to put on a show. I smiled and turned around to face him only for my gaze to slightly fall on the gate pass which was on his side.
Gently, I pushed Alan onto the bed and watched as he smiled gently at me.
Emily's POV “What are you doing?” he said.“Just because I'm taking my time to make a decision doesn't mean I won't consider you.” I said with a soft smile. “I just want to preserve my womanly honour you know…”As Alan leaned upwards, I snatched the gate pass from his side and let it fall under the bed. He didn't seem to notice. I got back up on my feet and watched Alan stare at me.“Okay, fine. I'll let you have your moment.” With that, he walked out of my room and slammed the door shut behind him.As soon as he left, I laid on the floor to pick the gate pass that I saw. I waited a few minutes to pass and then the door opened, revealing a maid with a tray containing food.“Thank goodness you're here.” I instantly had an idea in my mind that seemed fruitful.“Hey, what's your name?” I asked the maid.“It's Mae.” She said which made me nod.“Good. Now could you please swap clothes with me?”“What do you mean?” The maid asked.“As your future queen, you don't get to question me.” I s
Emily's POV The next thing I knew, we were out of the secret hallway with Alan forgotten in it. We walked to the garden and one of the guards stopped us. I kept my head bowed so that the guard did not recognize me.“So why are you stopping me?” Aiden asked which led the guard to clear his throat.“I don't mean to stop you, I swear, sir. I just want you to know who's with you.”“She's a maid, now my woman. Do you have anything against that?” Aiden asked angrily, causing the guard to clear his throat and look at Aiden with a bowed head.“I'm sorry, sir. I didn't… I didn't think about this well. You may leave.”Aiden grabbed my wrist and pulled me along with him as we walked away from the guard.I looked at Aiden, having a lot to say but keeping it in my mind. The moment we arrived at the gate, the guards in charge grunted upon seeing us.I brought my hand to my pocket, brought out the gate pass and handed it over to Aiden. He collected the gate pass and lifted it so the guards could s
Emily's POV She had short bob hair with red makeup around her eyes. She was beautiful and had a very sweet smile.“How are you?” She asked sweetly while I brought my right hand to my chest fearfully.“You poisoned me.”The woman shook her head and glanced at me with squinted eyes. “I don't understand what it is that you are saying.”“Are you saying that just to sound wise?” I asked which led her to frown.“I know I have been poisoned by you. Why else would I spit so much blood?”The woman sighed. “Of course, you think I posioned you when I only fed you some herbs to clean out your insides.”I looked around me. It was true that I felt lighter on the inside but why would I spit out blood?“You had some internal bleeding due to your fall but thankfully it healed in time.”“So you mean to say you didn't poison me?” I asked as I stood up to my feet with some struggle.“Yes, if I did, you wouldn't be here as I speak.”I stumbled forward and the woman led me back to the brick bed which was
Emily's POV “I wish I had more time with her,” Said Emilianna.“I don't mean to sound cruel but life doesn't always give us the life that we want.” I said.Emilianna chortled. “I can tell you didn't grow much on love. You're too harsh,”“Is that too much for you?” I asked.Emilianna sighed. “I forgot to ask you why you were at the spot where I found you. What's your history? That is, if you're willing to share.”I smirked. “You really want to know?”Emilianna nodded. “Yes, please share.”“Actually, I'd like to keep that to myself for now.”“Oh, looks like you haven't gone far in trusting people enough to tell them what you feel about life.”“Honestly, Emilianna. Would you blame me? I've walked this life wanting love but what to do when I don't find it? I can't just kill myself for it now. Can I?”“Listen Sweetheart, love isn't in a person. It's in the things you do. If you want to make yourself feel loved, it could be as simple as doing your hair so dancing in the moonlight. It coul
Emily's POV “What do you want to do?” I asked myself out loud, but then I decided to keep my thoughts to myself.“Don't worry about anything,” I said to myself. “Everything will work out eventually.”Then I ran my fingers through my tangy hair and sighed. How could I bring myself to sleep at ease when Maron did something so horrible to Emilianna's daughter and she didn't know. Wouldn't it be easier to get rid of me while I'm asleep? I sat up on the bed.“No, I will not sleep.”“You will sleep.” I heard a voice at the entrance of the cave causing me to sigh. It was Emilianna. My mind was fearful but my heart was calm. I wanted to tell Emilianna what I had heard but I just couldn't bring myself to. She wouldn't trust a stranger over her pack member.“Emilianna,” I said, and she smiled as she walked over and caressed my face.“Why aren't you sleeping yet?”“I don't feel comfortable.” I responded.“You don't feel comfortable enough to sleep or what?”“Yes.” I said, and she smiled. “Shoul
Emily's POV “It's the Alpha’s decision to make. It seems if we don't accept you, the Alpha won't accept us either. And from the looks of it, you're highly valuable to the Alpha.” The guy with black skin said.“How am I valuable to the Alpha?” I asked.“I mean it's pretty obvious, she let you sleep in her late daughter's cave.”I hummed. So the cave I slept in actually belonged to Emilianna's late daughter. I didn't know how to feel about that.“My name is Adam by the way.” He said which made me nod.“Right, Adam.”“Come on, let's go. I'm curious to see how you hunt.” Maron said and I nodded.I was given a bow and an arrow and I held onto it firmly as we were led to the woods. There was a group of deers and some pigs in the woods.Maron whispered to me. “Kill one, let's see how good you are.”I knew that this test depended on me doing well. That was the only was for me to get any atom of respect from this pack. Knowing they were rogue wolves, it was easier to realize with them that ev
Emily's POV “You alright?” She asked me and I nodded.“I'm fine.”“You haven't had anything to eat, have you?”“Not today.” I answered.“Come with me, there's probably something for you to have in the kitchen.”“Right.”I followed Penelope to the kitchen and it was filled with many chefs who were making many things.Penelope turned to one of them, “please make carrot soup for two.”“Okay, no problem.” The chef said and went to start a meal from scratch.“Is carrot soup that good?” I asked Penelope. “I've never had it before.”“Oh it's so nutritious. It heals your gut. I Iearned from my grandma that if you want to heal your brain, it all starts with the gut.”“Really?” I said.“Sure.”We sat outside the kitchen and Penelope sighed at me.“I don't know why but I feel like I can talk to you about anything.” she said and I raised a brow.“Really?”“Yes, that's why I wanted to connect with your wolf when we were at the woods but I couldn't.”“Right.”When the food came, I was grateful to
Emily's POV I stared blankly at Emilianna. My heart was beating so fast, I could feel it in my throat. I didn’t know how to begin. The words were there, but they were stuck. They felt too big, too heavy to say out loud."Emily," Emilianna said softly, her voice calm and gentle. "I’m here. I’m listening. Whatever it is, just tell me."I swallowed hard, trying to find my voice. "I... I know something," I began, my voice shaking. "Something important."Emilianna nodded, her eyes encouraging. "Go on," she urged, her tone patient and kind.I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "It’s about Maron," I whispered, my voice barely above a whisper. "He... he killed your daughter."Emilianna didn’t react the way I expected. She didn’t gasp or look shocked. Instead, she remained calm, her eyes soft but steady. "I know," she said quietly.I blinked, confused. "You... you know?" I asked, my voice full of disbelief."Yes, Emily," she replied, her voice gentle but firm. "I’ve known for a long
Emily's POV “Was hoping you'd think I was unconscious,” he mumbled into my hair. “So you wouldn’t make me move.” I laughed softly and turned toward him, our legs tangling naturally. He looked younger in the morning light, softer. As if the weight of his past had stepped back, if only for a few hours. I brushed my fingers across his brow, smoothing back a strand of hair that had fallen in his eyes. “I don’t want to move either,” I whispered. “Then don’t,” he said, pulling me closer. “We’ve earned one morning.” It was a strange thing—stillness. Foreign, almost. Our love had bloomed in war, grown through hardship, deepened through leadership. Most days, it felt like we were always on the edge of something: a threat, a decision, a moment too big to breathe through. But today… Today, we were just Emily and Fayne. Not Alpha. Not demon. Not legend. Just two people who had made it through the storm and still chose each other. He kissed the top of my head. “Still thinking about Kael?”
Emily's POV The echo of my children’s voices still lingered in the corridor even after I walked away. Something had changed—subtly, but powerfully. Kael and Aerlyn had finally found a rhythm, however fragile. That mattered more than any council, any throne. I drifted into the quiet of our chambers, the familiar warmth of it greeting me like a gentle tide. Fayne stood near the window, bathed in moonlight, his arms crossed as he stared into the distance like he always did when his mind wandered too far. He turned when he heard me, and his crooked smile instantly softened everything in me. “They’ll be alright,” I said, sinking into the edge of the couch. He raised a brow. “Kael didn’t burn down anything?” “Not today,” I teased. Fayne chuckled and walked over. “Then we’ll call that a win.” There was silence for a beat, one that didn’t demand to be filled. We were getting good at this kind of peace—the quiet between the wild. The world outside always turned, but we had carved out
Emily's POV I nodded. “Exactly. A joint council. One that unites the packs and keeps decisions balanced. Aerlyn will lead the Galahad and Red Cross packs, yes. Kael will govern Donovan when the time comes. But their power won't lie in their territories. It’ll lie in their ability to come together for decisions that affect all of us.”“Smart,” Fayne admitted, brushing a hand across my shoulder. “Give them shared stakes so there’s less room for rivalry.”“And more room for respect,” I added. “We’ll train them to make decisions together. Mediate conflicts. See each other as equals, even when their paths differ. We’ll show Kael that his role isn’t smaller, just different. He’ll grow into a protector, a strategist, a voice for the more volatile edges of the packs.”Fayne gave a small smile. “That sounds like you’ve been planning this for years.”“I have.” I turned toward him fully, letting the weight of my thoughts settle. “Because I know what it’s like to be raised in a world that pits s
Emily's POV The sun had dipped low, brushing golden light across the glass windows as I stood at the edge of the balcony, overlooking Galahad’s inner gardens. The breeze was gentle, tugging at the silk of my robe, and in the distance, I could hear laughter—Aerlyn training the younger wolves again, just as she always did.Behind me, I heard Fayne’s footsteps, quiet but heavy with thought. He came to stand beside me, his arms folded, gaze cast out toward the horizon. For a moment, we stood in silence, listening to the world we had carved out together. The peace we had fought for. Bled for.I sighed. “We have a family.”Fayne looked at me, his expression softening.“There were nights,” I continued, voice low, “when I didn’t think that would ever be our truth. That we’d ever survive long enough to see it. But now we have two children. A daughter who's strong enough to lead, and a son with a heart that's still learning to shape itself.”His hand slid gently over mine, warm and grounding.
Aerlyn’s POV I sat at the edge of the long stone table, the parchment map spread before us rippling with age and memory. Every scar on its surface marked a past battle, a lesson etched in ink and blood. Now it was my turn to leave a mark.Alpha Dante from the southern border was mid-sentence, proposing a joint patrol with his fastest wolves. Normally, I would’ve deferred to my mother—but today, I leaned forward.“That route won’t hold,” I said, surprising even myself with how calm my voice was. “The rogue movements I tracked followed wind pockets and low paths. They’re avoiding open terrain. We’d be leaving our flank exposed.”The room went still. A few of the elders exchanged glances. One even scoffed under his breath. But my mother said nothing. She didn’t have to. Her silence was her faith in me.Dante grunted, pointing at a different section of the map. “Then you suggest we close in here?”I nodded. “And reroute the scouts to this ridge. It’s narrow but provides full visibility.
Aerlyn’s POVThe gates of Galahad came into view just as the sun began to rise behind them, casting long gold shadows across the valley. Home. Safe. But not for long—not if what I found in Hollowpine was any indication.I dismounted quickly, handed my reins off to a stable guard, and headed straight for the central hall. My clothes were caked in dust, and my mind still raced with what I saw, what I *felt*.Guards nodded as I passed, their expressions shifting from relief to concern when they caught sight of my face. I must’ve looked like I hadn’t slept in days. I hadn’t.At the doors to the throne room, I didn’t wait to be announced.“Open the doors,” I told the sentries. They did.Inside, Mother stood near the map table, Fayne beside her. The room fell quiet as I entered, scroll still sealed in one hand, and a bloodied sash from Hollowpine in the other.Emily’s eyes locked on mine. Calm, but alert. “You’re early.”I dropped the sash onto the table. “Because Hollowpine isn’t there any
Emily’s POVThe stars were starting to blink into the sky when I found her in the training yard, alone, her sword still strapped to her back. She was sitting on the edge of the stone bench, shoulders relaxed now, legs swinging softly like she had when she was younger. She heard me before she saw me—her ears were always sharp—and looked up with those fierce, storm-hardened eyes I’d given her.“You handled it well,” I said, stepping toward her.“I wasn’t sure I did,” she murmured, eyes flicking back to the horizon.I sat beside her, our shadows stretching long behind us. “You didn’t lash out. You didn’t act for pride. You made a decision, and you stuck by it. That’s leadership, Aerlyn. It’s not always about winning—it’s about keeping everyone alive long enough to understand what the game even is.”She tilted her head, a small smirk curling her lips. “I sounded like you today. I said something and immediately thought, ‘that’s something Mom would say.’”I laughed softly. “Is that a compli
Emily’s POVYears drifted by like petals on the wind—soft and fleeting.Aerlyn was sixteen when her gifts sharpened like the edge of a blade. She stood taller than I remembered, with my fire in her voice and Fayne’s focus in her eyes. Her command in the training fields grew more precise, and pack members had started turning their heads when she spoke.Kael, eleven now, was all light-footed charm and quicksilver wit. He followed her everywhere, not out of need, but out of devotion. Their bond had matured into something more formidable—no longer just childhood closeness, but a powerful understanding. Where Aerlyn was disciplined, Kael was inventive. She wielded strength with clean precision. He wielded unpredictability like a weapon. I’d once feared their differences would push them apart. Instead, they balanced each other like twin stars circling the same sun.One morning, I watched from the tower balcony as they sparred in the courtyard. The sun cut across the stone in long shadows,
Emily’s POVThe storm rolled in just after midnight. A low rumble of thunder echoed across the mountains as the wind whispered through the trees outside our window. But inside Galahad’s walls, all was warmth and glowing lanternlight—and urgency.Fayne held my hand tightly as another contraction surged through me, sharp and steady, a rhythm I knew all too well. The midwife moved with calm precision, and Melissa hovered nearby with a basin of water and quiet encouragement. “It’s time,” the midwife said softly, eyes on me. “He’s ready.” I gritted my teeth and nodded, gripping Fayne’s hand even tighter. His thumb brushed my knuckles, grounding me. I looked into his eyes and saw the same unwavering strength I had leaned on through wars and peace, darkness and light. And then… there he was. The room went silent for the briefest second before the baby’s first cry broke through, loud and clear, small lungs announcing his arrival to the world. “He’s here,” I whispered, tears already sl
