After calming down enough to regain her composure, Ashley slowly opened her eyes. Her hand reached out for the bath glove.
This time, she rubbed her entire body gently—not filled with anger like a moment ago. After all, her face still felt a bit burned, and the scratch marks on her skin stung every time they were exposed to soap.
Normally, the source of her suffering came from one thing only—her family. Outside of that, her life for the past twenty-five years had gone pretty well. So she hadn't expected to encounter misfortune at the hands of a pair of ignorant lovers.
The girl had scratched her face the first day they met, while the man had smeared insults on her—pride and also face.
Ashley clicked her tongue, a bitter taste still settling in her mouth. It felt like her anger would boil over again just thinking about how roughly Josh had kissed her earlier.
She had no idea what to do next.
She was already too tired and fed up to deal with Josh again. But thinking about it, if she insisted on shutting herself in here forever and refused to face him, he would probably see her as a coward running away from conflict out of fear.
She had been humiliated enough today—this afternoon and tonight. So she decided that she didn't want to be weak and refused to let him win.

Josh sat quietly on the large sofa in the living room. The television in front of him was on, the glow casting flickering shadows across his face. A high school romance drama that had been trending lately played on the screen. It attracted many viewers with its lighthearted, refreshing, and innocent love story.
But he barely saw it.
Only his eyes followed the storyline—while his mind was elsewhere.
Everything inside his head became a battlefield, shifting from one to another. He reflected on the guilt from his recent out-of-control behavior toward Ashley. But his thoughts were also consumed by relentless worry for Sharon.
What happened between him and Sharon this afternoon had not gone well. She had left angry and in tears. Dozens of voice calls from him had gone unanswered. His messages remain unread. Moments ago, he had tried to contact her again, but his calls were still ignored.
As his thoughts drifted between Sharon and Ashley, his parents’ voices echoed in his mind—reminding him of their agreement. Warning him to be careful, to remember his precarious position in their relationship with the Song family.
His thoughts were interrupted when he heard the sound of the bedroom door opening.
His head turned, eyes locking onto the dimly lit corridor connecting the bedroom to the living room. He had been waiting for quite some time, uncertain if Ashley would even come out. But as soon as he saw her figure appear and stepped forward, he felt a small sense of relief.
To be honest, there was a lot they needed to clarify and settle—just between the two of them, without their parents' interference.
Previously, he had thought would be able to cover up his relationship with Sharon alone. That no one, not even Ashley, would ever know. But since she had already found out, he needed to change his plans.
Josh smiled as Ashley lowered herself into the chair across from him. He grabbed the remote and turned off the television, plunging the room into silence.
"Isn't that a little too far? Can you hear me from there?"
Ashley kept her expression fierce. "Of course," she said, her voice as cold and firm as possible. "You're the one who wanted to talk. So make it quick. I'm tired and want to rest."
Josh studied her. He could tell she was still angry. He wouldn't blame her if she hurled something at him this time. What had happened earlier was inexcusable. And from Ashley’s perspective, accidentally uncovering his secret must have been an unpleasant surprise. Having another woman in their marriage would be a scandal that would be just as damaging to both of them.
Worse, what had just been done to the girl in the room was certainly not ethical.
"I apologize for everything that happened to you today."
Ashley scoffed, disgust flashing in her eyes. "As you should. You were in the wrong. Instead of being sorry, you made it even worse."
"I know. I shouldn't have forced you like that."
"Forced? That was more than just force. Don’t you realize that what you did could be considered sexual harassment?"
Josh frowned. "Harassment? We're married, Ash. How can a husband harass his own wife?"
Ashley’s eyes widened. "Married? Husband? Wife? Somehow, those words sound ridiculous. We're not really married—it's just for show. And yes, doing something like that without mutual consent, even between husband and wife, is still harassment. You could be charged."
Josh listened and nodded. "So you think so? Do you actually know anything about the law? Do you have any lawyer friends? Or did someone tell you that?"
"So what?" Ashley hesitated at his question. Truthfully, she had only followed the logical assumption that if there was no consent, then it was harassment. But whether that applied in a marital relationship and whether it was actually prosecutable… she wasn’t sure. She knew Josh had never studied law either, so he was probably just as clueless.
Even if he did know, she was already prepared with any counterargument. Earlier, when she had decided to open the door and come out to face this man, she had already made up her mind—she would win every argument with Josh. At any cost.
"What I said wasn’t wrong," Ashley said, her shoulders shrugged and her chin lifted. She folded her arms across her chest, trying to look intimidating.
Josh merely smiled slightly. "Alright. In that case, I sincerely apologize. I admit that I was wrong. So, will you accept my apology?"
‘Suddenly?’ Ashley was surprised that it was that easy for the man to apologize.
After all his bad behavior and the threats he had made using her family—he apologized as easily as that? How funny.
She had never expected to witness Josh’s complicated nature and unpredictable way of thinking like this. It was impossible to guess what he was truly thinking and where he’s headed.
"What guarantee do I have that you won't do something like that again?"
Josh paused, considering for a moment before responding. "I guarantee myself. I'm not the kind of person who breaks promises. So you can take my word for it."
Ashley burst into laughter, "How is that supposed to be a guarantee? That’s ridiculous."
"Then what do I have to do to make you believe me?" Josh asked calmly, trying not to be provoked.
"Why would you even want me to believe you? From what I’ve seen today, it doesn’t seem like you care about other people’s opinions at all. You do whatever you want, cross boundaries, lie—"
Ashley spoke passionately, but her voice caught in her throat, suddenly dry and tight, cutting off her words. And because it was uncomfortable, she was busy clearing her throat.Josh watched her patiently. When she fell silent, struggling to continue, he finally spoke.“I just don’t want any more misunderstandings between us. And,” he sighed, “I don’t like being seen as a jerk. I'm also sorry for not telling you about my relationship. But clearly, I didn't lie.”"You didn't lie? How can you say that after what I saw?""I never said I was single. You never asked either, did you? So technically, I didn't lie."Ashley looked at him with a scornful glare. Unbelievable. This man could twist words and manipulate situations so smoothly, so cunningly.“I didn’t even know whether you were single or had a boyfriend,” Josh narrowed his eyes, locking his gaze onto Ashley's. "Or maybe you have a boyfriend too and just didn’t tell me?""As if! I’m a woman with morals. There’s no way I would agree t
He looked up. His eyes glanced at the girl who was staring at him intently.“Ah—Yes?” Josh stopped typing, leaving the sentence he hadn't finished. “Go ahead. I’m listening.”Ashley scoffed. “Are you sure? I don’t think so,” Ashley's tone sounded mocking, “You probably don’t even remember what we were talking about.”At the same time Josh also noticed Ashley deliberately glancing at the cell phone that was in her hand. So he put his phone down.“Oh really?” her tone is still the same.Josh sighed, rubbing his temple. “I’m listening, Ashley. You were explaining why you suddenly want a divorce when you've never thought about it before.”“Yes. Huh—no, no,” Ashley hurriedly corrected herself. “Who said I just thought of it now? Of course, I’ve thought about it. Who in their right mind would want to be stuck forever in a fake, business marriage like this?”Josh raised an eyebrow. He never thought Ashley would describe their marriage in such a variety of terms. It made him want to confront
Josh realized that if their conversation continued, it would only go around in circles without being resolved. Ashley didn’t seem to be in the mood to forgive him, and she certainly wasn’t about to agree to his request. Yet that was the core of the problem—where Ashley had found out he was in a relationship with another girl.Maybe, it had crossed his mind that if Ashley knew, there would be a price to pay. Because she was going to live this marriage like a real marriage—as her mother always insisted. But he hadn’t expected to get caught this quickly. And now, he might be paying a bigger price than he had ever anticipated.Because once trust is broken, piecing it back together is harder than fixing shattered glass.Josh finally broke the silence. “What if I apologize for everything? For everything that made you angry?”Ashley lifted her head and looked at him.“And what would I get in return for forgiving you?” she asked. “You’re only apologizing because you don’t want me exposing you
The abandoned Ashley sat stunned in her chair.A hollow breath escaped her lips. She felt her resentment surging again and was hard to contain. That man had harassed her, and now he was insulting her by leaving her just like that—on a day like this. Not that she expected him to stay to accompany her, no. But at the very least, he could have had a bit of common sense. A little logic. What if an acquaintance saw him wandering around outside? He had just apologized, and had just promised to be more careful. But the moment that girl appeared, he forgot everything and rushed to meet her. Completely wishy-washy and thoughtless. It was a wonder how he had survived this long with such a mindset. She had heard he was very intelligent. Even among his older brother and sister—both were famously skilled in politics, following in their father's footsteps—Josh was said to be even better. That’s why he was able to establish his own company. And it was not wrong though. As she remembered back when th
Her fingers mindlessly pressed buttons until a drama started playing. She simply followed the storyline, and got carried away. The actress on screen was in the middle of an angry outburst, trying to calm herself down with food—ordering a super spicy jjamppong. The actress devoured the spicy steaming noodle soup. Her face looks melting with satisfaction. She said spicy flavors helped relieve emotions. It triggered certain nerves, making the brain feel more relaxed and happy. The effect, supposedly, was as powerful as drinking or eating something sweet.‘At this hour, something soupy seemed much more appealing instead of ice cream,’ Ashley thought. Her eyes suddenly glanced at the clock on the wall. It showed past 2 AM."It's almost morning," she muttered. Her stomach was also hungry because she hadn't eaten dinner yet. Her last meal was a light snack at her wedding party this afternoon. She even had to swallow with difficulty due to being under a chaotic feeling."Hh... I really want t
Josh only smiled slightly. Somehow, his heart felt heavy at the thought of giving in to Sharon’s wishes. He didn’t have the energy, to be honest, with her. His body and mind were completely drained from dealing with problems he never expected. On top of that, he worried that if any trace of Ashley’s scent still lingered on his clothes, Sharon would definitely notice.A quiet sigh escaped his nose. His fingers, which had been gently caressing her cheek, now traced down to her full, red lips.“Do you want to do it?”Even so, he couldn’t bring himself to reject her outright. He had already hurt her enough by betraying her—by marrying another woman. Now he couldn't disappoint her more.Sharon grabbed Josh wrist and kissed his thumb. “I don’t know. I’m just not in the mood. I’d rather hit you than sleep with you.”Josh tilted his head spontaneously. Quite amazed that the girl wasn't excited. Usually, it was he who struggled to keep up with her.“How about you hit me after I shower?” he sm
Ashley gasped. When she opened her eyes, she found herself still in the living room. In a very uncomfortable position—sitting with her left side of her face resting on the table. The sunlight had already poured in and illuminated the entire room through the large glass window from one end of the wall to the other. It made her frown several times because of the glare. But the bright sunlight that had risen was nothing compared to the pain that shot through her when she raised her head.A fierce, dull ache filled her neck and shoulders, radiating upwards to tingle all the nerves in her head and downward as if gripping her shoulders and back. Even after managing to sit upright, her head was still tilted to the right—it was extremely difficult and stiff to move it back to its normal position. Groans of pain escaped her lips, echoed repeatedly there, as she struggled until finally managed to make her head face forward.Even after succeeding, the groans of pain continued to slip from her m
"Huh... Um, girl..." Bella was heard exhaling lazily, "You need to remember that Mike is a grown man. There's no need to worry about him that much either.""Grown men can also meet bad people and get into trouble, right?" Ashley replied, not convinced.Bella paused for a moment and then said, "Yes, he is. But don't you see his rock-like muscles?""Why have big muscles if you can't fight? Don't you remember last year he got beat up by a high school kid?"Bella winced, then chuckled. "Ouch... If he hears it from you, his heart must be hurting."They burst out laughing together. After the laughter faded, Ashley sat down on the couch and leaned back. "The important thing is that you confirm his whereabouts and condition first."Bella's voice was not heard for a moment, "I don't think it's necessary. Ash, I'm sure he's fine—though, yeah, his words are weird."Ashley raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "How do you know he's fine when you yourself think he's weird? He's also back to NZ tonight wit
”Well, um, yeah,“ Ashley glanced at Josh again, thinking of an excuse that sounded plausible as soon as possible, ”It was office business. Something urgent. That's why he said he'd only be gone for a while."“Alright,” came a short sigh from the sound of her mother's breathing, "And you, you better have a pretty good reason for refusing to meet me outside. I won't tolerate it if you get into mischief. Nor will I defend you if your father gets angry.""No, mom. It's not about something bad like what you think."“Okay.”As soon as Ashley hung up, Josh started asking questions. Because the girl's words that she said to her mother made his curiosity multiply into even more.Starting from what made Mrs. Ashley sound so eager to meet the girl. Why did she insist on meeting today. And why Ashley lied that he was going out for office business.“Your mom wants to see you? She's coming here?” His sentence came quickly—reflecting his curiosity that also wanted to be answered quickly.Ashley nodd
After the drugs took effect and affected her body, Ashley slowly started to get sleepy again. As the pain in her whole body gradually subsided, she fell back into a deep dreamland.Meanwhile, Josh went to the living room with his cell phone with him.He plopped down on the long sofa and opened the delivery app. He sifted through the restaurants for a while before finally choosing a menu and placing his order. While waiting for it to arrive, he took the initiative to send a few messages to Sharon. This time without being burdened by the shadow of worry or fear, because he had already found half the solution to his relationship with Sharon. The two of them messaged each other, exchanging sweet words, expressing their longing, until the impromptu idea of meeting out of the Hana town that day. Then the doorbell rang. The delivery message that arrived made him stop texting and take care of the food first. He transferred the still-hot porridge into a bowl, filled some side dishes, and arran
Ashley woke up just as the pain in her body returned to her.Last night, she managed to sleep after the medicine she took worked on her body-drastically reducing the pain and making her sleepy. But perhaps now the effect had faded and perhaps it was almost gone because Ashley felt the sensation that slashed and burned her skin again attacking her relentlessly. Her forehead was in a deep frown. And a low moan she couldn't help but let out of her mouth. The lighting in the room was still dim. And when she looked at the sofa by the window, Josh was still sleeping in a position that looked uncomfortable. The sofa was not long. So that man had to lie curved while hugging his own knees, exactly like the fetal position. She then reached out her hand to move the table clock to allow her to check what time it was. With all her might, Ashley tried to move even though her body was crumbling. It was a thousand times more excruciating than a few days ago when she slept sitting up.Her eyes squinte
After Josh finished reading it and convinced himself to have understood the entire meaning of the sentences written there, he closed the folder with a very long exhale of relief. He felt like he had just succeeded in assembling a puzzle that he had never thought of before that might have a hidden meaning. Not only that, Josh finally found the way out that he had been looking for so hard.A sense of disbelief and a truly great pleasant surprise entered him like a miracle that he did not expect. There were several articles of agreement written and legally authorized in the document. It stated that the parties involved were Ashley and her father. An important point that Josh found quite eye-opening was a statement stating that Ashley was not allowed to sue Josh for divorce. If she did, then all the benefits she received and the shares she owned would be canceled. It was apparently related to a statement that Josh had also signed privately before marriage. Which actually made him wonder a
Earlier, after Aunt Gong had cleaned up his lunch and done the rest of her work in the house, Josh started contemplating again about many things. About his relationship with Sharon, about his mother's mission, about Min Jinah's interference, about Ashley, and about himself personally. He tried hard to unravel one by one the tangled threads that tied all his problems together into one big problem that was impossible to get rid of. But at the very least, he had to find a way out that he could use to make it subside so that it wouldn't get bigger and end up strangling him to death. And as he sorts and reconnects everything—perhaps for the hundredth time—the only thing that can keep him alive is if he lets Sharon go. His mother's mission to save his father and sibling’s political future would be accomplished, he would make a huge profit for his company, Sharon would have no reason to threaten him, and Min Jinah could be quietly silenced once again. But that was something he couldn't possi
“Consider it as a replacement for your lost money. Because it might take a while to find the boy who stole it. You can use it first until your money is found.”The old woman still shook her head. “I don't want to. Please don't make me owe you more,” she shook her head as she handed the envelope to Jason.Ashley stepped forward to mediate between them. She took the envelope from the old woman’s hand and gave it to Jason. “Then, I'll make sure that the thief is caught soon, okay? And as for your cart, don't think about it. I'll bring it here tomorrow. You must stay at home, Grandma. The doctor said you need to rest for a few days.”The old woman nodded. Her face still portrayed a collection of awkwardness and guilt for troubling so many people, although she also did not deny that she was overwhelmed by worry and confusion because all her savings had disappeared.“We're saying goodbye, aren't we, Grandma?” Ashley then looked at her grandson who was quietly staring at her, “can you take u
Ashley shook her head, maintaining her own opinion. “Wanna bet? I'll treat you twice if I guess right.”Jason laughed, “Shouldn't I be the one to treat you if you win?”“Don't. Then I won't have a chance to return the favor.”Jason let out a long sigh. He wondered why Ashley was risking something that she would obviously lose badly. “Are you sure? You won't regret taking twice the time to buy me a meal? Or are you betting like that because you know your chances of winning are almost zero?”“Of course not,” Ashley smiled widely. “Do you think I'm playing a trick on you? I just feel confident that she won't take it for granted.”Jason felt even more skeptical about the girl's confident statement. In his opinion, it was very unreasonable. What normal human being would knowingly pass up an opportunity to get money for free.If he gave an amount that was very unlikely to be rejected by anyone, maybe that old woman would melt and accept it shamelessly.“Alright. Then I'll give her an amount
“Want to sit here?” Jason pointed to a long bench made of wood, then spread his gaze across the open front yard. In front of the old lady's house, there was only a narrow road and it displayed a view that showed part of the city from above. “We can wait for Mr. Kwak while getting some fresh air.”Ashley followed where Jason pointed and nodded. There was no harm in her resting there for a while. It would also probably lessen the awkwardness of the old woman and her grandson for not having to jostle with Ashley or Jason inside the house. With Jason helping her walk, Ashley slowly stepped up to sit on a long wooden bench in the middle of the front yard. The man grabbed a rag that was lying there and cleaned the surface of the chair before it was occupied by Ashley and himself.“Thank you,” Ashley said as she adjusted her seat as comfortably as possible with her legs stretched out.Jason followed sitting next to her after that.“Thank you again. You guys really got into a lot of trouble t
It was already dark outside as their car still drove slowly between the densely populated housing estates directed by the old woman. After going through many small alleys, they finally arrived in front of a small, old-fashioned house with a poorly maintained yard. Mr. Kwak and Jason got out and helped the old woman to walk. Meanwhile, Ashley, carrying a plastic bag of medicine, followed behind them with a slight limp. Behind the three people, Ashley peeked out. In front of the main door, Ashley caught a silhouette of a small child sitting curled up alone in the darkness. And as they all slowly walked into the house, the child stood on tiptoe and cried out loudly, “Grandma!”“Geez... why don't you turn on the light!” the old woman yelled back and tapped the boy who was her grandson on the shoulder. The boy immediately rushed over and began to shed tears. “Grandmother, why did you take so long to come home? Who are these uncles?” The little boy whined and cried even harder. His thin, d
