Davina’s POV

I heard the door creak open, and my heart nearly leapt out of my chest. Who could it be again? I was already exhausted. I was weak and hungry.

Instead of perceiving the scent I feared the most, I cut the scent of him. I listened carefully, I knew those footsteps. That scent. It was really him.

“Malcolm!” I gasped, spinning around. He had come to see me finally.

There he was, standing in the doorway, but something about him felt off. He wasn't smiling, in fact he didn't look happy to see me after days of absence. However, I tried to brush it off. Maybe it was all in my head. What mattered was that he had come. He was here. He hadn’t abandoned me.

I ran to him, throwing myself into his arms but before I could reach him, he shoved me back.

Misstepped. almost fell, as I tried to catch my breath. My mind refused to process what had just happened. I blinked and shook my head in disbelief.

I looked up at him, confused. “Malcolm?” widening my eyes. “What just happened? What did you do?”

He didn't look remorseful by his action, he was frowning his face and his posture was stiff. His eyes that once held warmth and love, were now cold, and angry.

“We can’t do this anymore,” he said, sounding emotionless and angry.

I blinked. “What? What are you talking about? Are you seriously?”

His jaw tightened. “It’s over, Davina. We can't continue again. This is so wrong and we shouldn't have started it in the first place.”

A sharp pain shot through my chest, like he’d reached into my ribcage and crushed my heart in his hands. “No,” I whispered, shaking my head. “No, you don’t mean that. You can't do this to me. You can’t reject me. I am your fated mate and it should count.”

He exhaled heavily, running a hand through his hair. “My father has forbidden it. I know it hurts, it's not fair to you or either of us. I'm so sorry, Davina, we can't be together.”

My stomach dropped. “Malcolm, please,” I stepped forward, desperate to touch him, to feel something real. “Don’t do this. We can talk to Alpha. We have to tell him we are mates destined to be together by the moon goddess. He’ll understand. He's Alpha and knows how hurtful it is to be rejected by your true mate. Please let's talk to him.” I cried and cried but it seemed it was all in vain.

I wanted to scream, to shout but I couldn't do it. Maybe the mind link wasn't working. Maybe I wasn't expressing myself well. But that was the least I could do.

“I have no choice,” he muttered, avoiding my eyes. “I hope you understand. This is hard for me too. I tried my best but I guess it wasn't enough.”

“You do!” I insisted, reaching for his hand, but he yanked it away like my touch burned him.

“My father…” He cut himself off, inhaling sharply. “He won’t allow it. You know how he can be. He even threatened me, if I go ahead to mate you, he will cut my inheritance off.”

I let out a broken laugh. “Since when do you care about what your father allows? You are not to be Alpha, your words still stand, and we both know.”

Malcolm flinched, and for a split second, I saw the cracks on his face. He felt guilty. Or maybe he was in pain. But then it was gone and was replaced by that cold, detached expression again.

“I have responsibilities, Davina. A future to uphold.”

Tears burned my eyes. “And I was never a part of that future? Is that what you are saying? That your promises are all lies?”

He hesitated, just for a second. “No.You could've been but things have changed and you have to understand.”

A sob tore from my throat. “You’re lying. No! You can't say that. You can't do this to me.”

“Does it matter?” He said in a hollow voice. That made me want to go crazy.

“It matters to me!” I cried. “You love me, Malcolm. I love you, You know we do!”

He closed his eyes for a brief moment, gripping his hands into fists. He seemed like he was fighting the urge not to spill hurtful words to me. “Love isn’t enough. A lot is at stake.”

I grabbed his arm, holding on tightly. “It is! It’s more than enough! Malcolm, we’re fated! We are mates! The moon goddess wasn't mistaken.”

He exhaled shakily. “That doesn’t change anything.”

I shook my head furiously, tightening my hand. “You’re just scared. You’re scared of what he’ll do to you. But Malcolm, what about me? What about what I’ve already endured? What about the pain I have to go through? Huh! Do you even care?”

His eyes snapped to mine, and for a second, I saw the war raging inside him. “Of course I care,” he whispered, in a strained voice.

“Then fight for me,” I begged. “Please.”

His face twisted with pain, but he pulled away from my grasp.

“I can’t.”

I let out a sharp, ragged breath. “You won’t.”

He became silent.

“Say it,” I demanded, fearing for what I already knew. “Say you don’t love me.”

He turned his face away.

“Malcolm,” I whispered, with my hands trembling. “Look at me and say it.”

He didn’t.

Instead, he took a step back. Then another.

“Goodbye, Davina.”

My breath hitched. “No, please…”

He turned his back on me.

“Don’t do this, Malcolm!” I sobbed. “Don’t walk away from me!”

His body was tense like my words physically hurt him.

But he didn’t stop.

He reached the door, gripped the handle like he was going to break it.

“I’m sorry,” he murmured. And then, without another word, he walked out and closed the door behind him.

I collapsed onto the floor, as my cries echoed in the empty room.

He was gone.

My mate. My love. My only hope was gone.

Davina's POV “Finally, I could have time to myself, sigh.”Wiping the sweat off my forehead, I took a deep breath as I reached out to my flute lying just beside my duffel bag which held everything I own. I was an omega; the lowest rank in the pack which was tough for me, not to talk about when you are being reminded of it each day. This was my predicament and each time I prayed to the moon goddess to help me. Nothing changed. She has been mute on me.My status as an omega made my family detest me, my sister Lyra hated me so much that she didn't fail to show it whenever she had the chance to do so, not to talk of my mother who considered me a disgrace. As if being an omega was not enough, I was born mute and I could only use signs to communicate only to those who were interested in listening to what I have to say. Because of this, Alpha Lumen tagged me as a cursed fellow and as a punishment, he made me a slave in the palace, tending to the needs of the royal family. Armed with m

Malcolm's POV “Mate!” I called, peering at her with widened eyes. The look on her face confirmed it too though she didn't say a word to me. For the next few minutes, I just stood there, staring into space as I tried to process what was happening. Growing up, my father had made me believe that my mate was Lyra, her sister and because of this, we were so close. But how wrong was he? “You're my mate.” I said in a question-like tone whereas I was just confirming what the moon goddess had done. Smiling at her, I took a step forward to close the gap between us but she took a step backwards, her eyes widened in fear. “Come on, you don't have to be scared.” I coyed, trying to calm her raging nerves but that didn't help as she began to dart her eyes around. Grabbing the hem of her gown, she began to look around and I was certain her mind was already running haywire with different ideas. “You shouldn't be scared of me, you are my mate and…” Suddenly, I pressed my lips together as I sn

Davina's POV Indeed the moon goddess doesn't care about me. Instead of mating me to someone else, she mated me to Alpha Malcom, Alpha Lumen’s son, my enemy. It was sickening and no matter the direction I looked at it from, I lost my head but the kind words of Malcolm always nullified it. This went on for a while and I could literally feel myself floating in space as my head felt heavy. Resting against the wall, I grabbed my head with both hands as I slid through the wall to the floor.“I will have to live with the thought of Alpha Malcolm as my mate only since no one would be in support of our mating ceremony.” Lyra! She is going to kill me if she finds out I was mated to Alpha Malcom. Since childhood, she had been made to believe that she is going to be the next Luna and hence, she became so proud. Mother didn't help matters a bit as she encouraged every single thing which she did. You are the Luna, everyone should be under your feet — this was mother's favorite words to her

Davina's POVWith my heart ramming against my chest, I couldn't help but stare at the duo who were glaring murderously at me. Pressing my lips tightly together, I made sure I didn't make a sound otherwise I would face a grave punishment for it. “What have you done again?” Mother yelled, breaking the silence in the living room. “Wherever you go, you always cause havoc, aren't you tired of being hated?” She added with a huff. Placing her hands on her waist, Lyra rose and with a loud and intimidating tone, she said, “If I were you, I would have killed myself a long time ago. It's not as if being deprived of a befitting burial would make a difference, you are nothing but a slave, your body would be fed to the rogues.”Each word she said made my heart break until it was completely broken and I couldn't hold back my tears anymore. While they laughed and made a mockery of me, I just stood there, whimpering like a rodent that had been caught in a hunter’s trap. Unable to bear it anymore

Davina's POVAlpha Malcom initiated the conversation which I heard in my head and I responded to it. The realization of this made my heart bubble in excitement. At least I wasn't totally dumb, I had a voice in my head. Over the weeks, our friendship became stronger to the extent that I always looked forward to spending more time with him each day. His presence soothed me that I literally had nothing to worry about all through the day even though I was still maltreated. One day, during our secret meeting, he held my hand and with a little sigh, he said, “I can't wait to announce our relationship to the world.” Terrified, I yelled, “No! You can't do that.” There was a confused look on his face at my sudden disapproval. “I can't let you do that.” I said again, this time around, fiddling with my fingers as my heartbeat increased. “But why? Don't you love me?” He asked, tightening his grip on my hand. “I do love you but… I can't let anyone find out about our relationship. My mother

Every muscle in my body ached as though I had been trampled by a herd of wild beasts. My head thumped, and my ribs screamed with every shallow breath I took, and my wrists felt raw from the ropes they had used to bind me. For a fleeting moment, I thought it was over. That they had finally tired of their cruelty and left me to wallow in my pain. But as I moved slightly, the coarse fabric of the floor beneath me squeezed against my skin, I realized I wasn’t alone. They were still here. Lyra stood to my left, with her arms folded, and her expression was of pure hatred. my mother, though I hated to call her, stood beside her, tapping her foot impatiently on the ground. Lyra’s POV“Why is he here?”I stiffened, curling my fingers around the window frame as I saw Malcolm striding toward our house. He wasn't looking happy or even friendly. He was just walking as if he was coming to fight. My stomach twisted in irritation. I knew exactly why he’s here. That witch Davina. Of course, it was always about her. And that thought made me so angry. His father had warned him to stay away from Davina and he had agreed now he’s here. For days, he had stayed away like a good little Alpha heir, just as his Father had commanded. But now? Now, he is back? What for? Does he want to lose his inheritance? Does he prefer Davina over his position? Was he here to defy his father? This is crazy. Totally.I almost walked outside to stop him. To tell him to turn around, to remind him of his place in My life. But something held me back. No. Let’s see how this plays out. I thought. If Davina threw herself at him again, if she begged him to take her back, I’d have all the proof I

I said get out. You can go back to your room now. Although You have laundry to do.” Get out? The word hung in my ear, taunting me. For days, weeks, maybe I’d been locked away in this cold, suffocating room, I was just so desperate to escape. But now, staring at her smug face, I didn’t feel relief. I felt scared. I was back to the hard reality of life. To tasking jobs without food. “Why now?” My voice came out hoarse, but barely more than a whisper. She smirked and leaned against the doorframe. “Why not? Don’t think for a second it’s out of kindness. We’re done with you, that’s all. You’re nothing but a waste of space. Moreover, we have jobs to do.” I wanted to argue, to beg her to keep me still locked up, but I bit my tongue. The last thing I needed was to give her more reason to hurt

Lyra’s POV “Unbelievable!” Alpha Damian’s roar echoed through the hall, shaking the walls and sending a shiver down my spine. His fists slammed against the table, they sound like thunder, silencing both me and my mother. I stood a few steps behind my mother, barely able to hide my smirk as the Alpha seethe with rage. I totally understood him as Davina's involvement with his son was an insult to him and the pack. “A dumb girl? An Omega?” He scoffed, pacing the floor like a caged wolf. “How dare she? My son, the future Alpha of this pack, risking everything for someone like her?” His voice dripped with disgust. Genevieve, my ever-calculating mother, strolled forward, in a gentle but firm voice. “Alpha, it’s unfortunate, but I felt it was my duty to inform you. Malcolm’s behavior… it’s unbecoming of someone in his position.” Alpha Damian stopped pacing, as his piercing eyes narrowed as he looked at my mother. “You’ve done the right thing, Genevieve. She never told me that we’d be going there. “Mom, is there a problem?” She chuckled. “You worry too much. Just go get dressed. I’ll give you only five minutes.” she said, walking out of the kitchen. I widened my eyes, “five minutes?” “Yes, five minutes.” I looked at myself, huffed, and dropped the cup in my hands and walked out of the kitchen to my bedroom. Exactly, five minutes, I was standing outside, dressed in a black and white Polka dress, with my hair packed in a tight ponytail and black slippers. While I waited for my mother who gave me five minutes. “Five minutes, really Mom?” I said, eyeing her. She smiled and rolled her eyes at me. We walked in total silence to the Alpha’s hou

Why was I left in the dark all this while?” No wonder Lyra and her mother never treated me like one of them. I felt like an outcast. I leaned back against the wall, with questions flooding through my mind. Was my mother truly guilty? Did she really try to seduce the Alpha? Or was that just another one of Genevieve’s cruel lies? Where did she go? Will I ever find her?And what did she look like? Did I resemble her in any way?
