Chloe
I don’t know how I made it home. I wasn’t even aware that I was putting one foot in front of the other, let alone heading in the right direction. There was nothing left for me to do besides go home, although the space didn’t feel like home anymore.
It only vaguely registered that the car was back in the driveway, meaning Leah was home. Was she still living here? Was I going to be forced to live with her? The thought made me sick.
When I opened the door, I ignored Leah, who was sprawled across the couch and went directly to the kitchen to wash the mud and blood off my hands. I heard her get up and saunter into the kitchen, leaning against the doorway.
“What do you want, Leah?” I finally sighed, turning to her as I dried my hands.
“Oh, nothing,” she chirped.
Something broke inside me at her nonchalance and I hissed, “Why the fuck did you do it, Leah? Why are you so hateful?”
She raised an eyebrow at me but didn’t reply
I turned away from her, disgusted. I turned back to her a moment later, anger lacing the words I hurled at her. “Who the fuck has been hurting you, Leah? I know it was Conson or Mom, so who was it?” When she didn’t immediately answer, I threw my hands up in the arm in frustration. “What does it matter at this point? They’re both dead. Dead, dead, dead.” My heart broke a little more with each repetition of the word. “No one in the pack would dare lay a hand on you – you were Conson’s daughter. The beta’s daughter. So, who hurt you, Leah? Because it sure as hell wasn’t anyone in this household.”
Leah tossed her hair over her shoulder and rolled her eyes. The desire to pounce on her was almost overwhelming. How could she be acting like this when people were dead?
“Don’t worry your pretty little head about it, Chloe. It doesn’t concern you.”
I rounded on her, spitting mad. “My mother is dead because of your accusations. You may not have held the knife, but you are more responsible than anyone else.”
Leah tutted at me. “So melodramatic, Chloe. Really, get a grip.”
I saw red and it took every ounce of willpower I possessed not to throttle Leah senseless.
“All I’m saying is that it doesn’t matter who gave me the wounds. All that matters is who the pack thinks gave me them. Your mom.”
I stared across the kitchen at her, my hands clenched in tight fists. It was hard to keep the anger I felt coursing through my veins in check, but I knew attacking Leak wouldn’t help my case with the pack. Mom had been thrown out – it was only a matter of time until they lumped me into the same category unless something changed.
“Poor Susanna – a single mom, a rogue, wandering the country with her bastard child. Poor, pitiful Susanna. How she ensnared my father, I don’t know. They weren’t mates – there was no reason for them to end up together.” She sniffed as if offended by the match. “Everyone knows what kind of woman she was now, though, don’t they? How many pack members showed up to her funeral today, Chloe?” She gave me a knowing look. “Or was it just you? I don’t know how you can hold your head up high after everything she did.”
“But she didn’t touch you! Not even once! She treated you just as she treated me – as a daughter!” I erupted, the words vomiting from my mouth before I could stop them.
Leah’s look hardened. “I had a mother, and she died before Susanna ever came into my life. No one could ever replace her. Ever since you arrived at the house, Dad decided to try to win you over. He doted on you and completely forgot about me. I was his own daughter! And it was all yours and your mother’s fault!”
I took a step back from her, stunned. I’d had no idea she felt this way, and I knew Conson hadn’t either. He never would have let her believe he loved her less because I was here.
Before I could think of anything to say, Leah continued. “And you stole Caden from me. That’s unforgivable. I was supposed to be his mate. It was supposed to be me! And instead, it’s you? A no one? A bastard’s child? How was that fair?”
“Well, he’s all yours now,” I hissed. “He rejected the mate bond. Go ahead, Leah, see if Caden wants you now that I’m out of the way. I can guarantee he won’t.” I wanted to believe that Caden would see through Leah’s mask, but I wasn’t sure he would. I hadn’t, and I’d lived with her. I’d thought she had a mean streak, but I’d had no idea that it’d run this far into hatred toward my mother and myself.
“Trust me, I will,” Leah hissed before turning and stomping out of the room, slamming the front door behind her.
I stared after her for a long moment before letting out a sigh I hadn’t known I’d been holding. I needed a shower, both to wash off the memory of burying my mother and to get the dirt that still covered me off.
While under the burning hot shower spray, I contemplated my options. I had to show the rest of the pack who Leah really was. It’d been a niggling of thought since Conson died, but now I was sure that Leah was the wolf behind everything. She’d plotted and planned for who knew how long because she hated my mother. She’d orchestrated her death as surely as if she’d held the knife.
It wasn’t fair, and I was determined to figure out how to show everyone her true colors. It was going to be difficult, but I still held out some hope. The Alpha and pack leaders were logical. Even Caden might be on my side if I explained it to him correctly.
My heart didn’t really believe that, though. I remembered the way Caden had looked at me – there had been no hints of affection, and I seriously doubted if we’d ever return to where we were before.
I was bright red from the hot water by the time I stepped out of the shower. I quickly dried off and slipped into clean clothes. I was still brushing my hair when there was a knock on the front door. I half expected Leah to be standing there when I swung open the door, having forgotten her key for the millionth time, but instead, I found Sarah, the Alpha’s messenger, waiting for me on the front stoop.
“May I come in?” Sarah asked.
I nodded and stepped aside, knowing that it wasn’t really a question. She was going to come inside and share whatever news she’d been directed to share, whether I wanted her to or not.
I sat on the couch and stared at my bare feet, unable to meet her gaze. I had the sinking feeling that, just like Mom, I was being cast out of the pack. I prayed my body took it better than Mom’s had – there was no one left to bury me if I died.
“Chloe,” Sarah started, her voice cold and brisk. “You are being demoted to the status of Omega. You must either work for the pack or leave and live as a rogue. Those are your two options. Which do you choose?”
Her words shocked me, prompting a physical jerk that I was powerless to ignore. While she was not the Alpha, she was repeating his words verbatim, and that meant they carried the same weight. It’s what being a messenger meant.
“Omega?” I gasped, still trying to get enough air into my lungs.
“Yes.”
I was silent for so long she was prompted to speak. To my surprise, she kneeled before me and took my hand, a kindness I hadn’t foreseen. “You are still part of the pack, Chloe. It could be worse.”
No words formed, and eventually, Sarah left, closing the door softly behind her. I flinched as if she’d slammed it.
I sat there, lost to the world, until Leah came home, all bright smiles and cheer.
“I heard the most delicious rumor!” she crooned, stopping in front of me. “A little birdy told me that you were demoted to Omega!” When I didn’t react, she tapped me lightly on the forehead. “But don’t worry, Chloe, if you don’t want to work for the pack, you can always go back to being a rogue. You have practice with that, don’t you?”
I stared blankly up at her. I wanted to react – she was expecting me to – but I was too numb to do anything more than blink dumbly.
Seeing that I was lost, Leah laughed and went to her room, leaving me in the living room alone with my thoughts.
Caden“Now, now, Omega, that’s no way to clean the floors,” Jared hissed at Chloe, who was on her hands and knees cleaning the floor with a rag. My knees ached at the thought of having to crawl across the tile like she had been doing for the better part of an hour.Chloe ignored him and continued to dip the rag in the sudsy water. I could tell from the mean glint in Jared’s eyes that he wasn’t about to give up. I wanted to stop him, but I didn’t. It wasn’t my place anymore.“You’re doing it wrong,” Jared smirked before kicking over the bucket, soaking both Chloe and the floor in soapy water she now had to clean up.I jerked in their direction before I managed to control myself.Part of me wanted Chloe to fight back, even if it wouldn’t make anything better. The old Chloe, who’d been my mate, had always been spirited, even if a little quiet sometimes.Jared walked off, laughing his head off. Before I could make my way over to Chloe to do something, anything to help, Mariah poked her he
ChloeI hadn’t slept this well in months – since before Conson died. Ever since that night, it’s been one fitful night’s sleep after another, and it’d only worsened when Mom got sick.“I think she’s waking up!” somehow whispered.“Let the poor girl wake up in her own time,” a different voice chastised. “She doesn’t need your screeching.”“Boys,” a deep voice sighed. “Can we shelve this until Chloe is awake?”I started to my name, my eyes flying open. I was in a grand bed, surrounded by four men, three younger and one old enough to be my father. I paused at this thought, squinting at the older man who was sitting next to my bed. There’d been something about my father… information I’d just learned recently… I traced the man’s features as we stared at each other. We had the same nose and the same hazel eyes. They were even shaped similar to mine.In a rush, the last few weeks came back to me, and with them, the knowledge that King Charles was my father.“You’re King Alpha Charles,” I cro
Chloe“I understand that your mother has passed on,” King Charles said gently.I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. The pain was still too real.“I think I owe an explanation to you, Chloe. You may hate me afterward, but I feel like you deserve to know the truth.”I doubted I could ever hate the wolf sitting beside me, still clutching my hand. He might be the King Alpha, but he was… safe. My wolf felt safe with him.“I searched for many years for my mate, but I never found her. It was a different time, then, and with court politics… well, it was important there was a Queen Luna on the throne next to me, so I married a political friend. In many ways, she was suited for the throne better than I was, and I hoped to someday grow to love her. While she was everything a Queen Luna should be, I didn’t. There was always something missing, and we weren’t anything other than friends. I thought I was okay with that; I really did. But I did have a habit of slipping out of the palace and relaxi
ChloeThe moment we stepped down the first step, the whispers started. Well, they weren’t really whispers with my superior wolf hearing.“Who is that?”“Is that Prince Adrian’s bride?”“He never escorts anyone!”“She must be special!”“They think we’re together,” I whispered out of the corner of my mouth, making sure to keep my bright, coached smile in place. I’d learned it in one of my many lessons on how to be a Princess.Adrian ignored me just as surely as he was ignoring the whispers. I shouldn’t be hurt, but I was. As if sensing my unhappiness, Adrian whispered at the halfway mark, “They’re just upset because you’re beautiful, and they can’t place you. Wolves are gossips – they all want to be the first person to figure out who you are.”I was stunned, not by his pronouncement, but because he’d called me beautiful. And he’d dropped it so casually as if it was the most natural thing in the world to say. I wanted to turn and see if he was looking at me, but I didn’t dare take my gaz
ChloeWerewolves were natural gossips. I pushed the thought away as soon as it appeared in my mind; Adrian was my half-brother. We were related. The Moon Goddess didn’t pair siblings together – inbreeding was nonexistent.A motion to the left of us caught my eye, and I turned to find Knox approaching, his expression wary. “Are you okay?” Knox said, stepping forward slightly with a frown. I wasn’t sure who he was speaking to me, Adrian or Bryce. Perhaps he was asking all three of us.“I’m fine,” Adrian snarled. Knox’s eyes widened in surprise, and he stopped advancing. I almost felt bad for him. While Adrian wasn’t the warmest person to me, he seemed to be very close to his younger brothers and loved them very much. I was sure Knox wasn’t used to his eldest brother speaking to him in such a manner.“We’re all good, Knox. Thank you for checking on us. We are just having a little discussion,” Bryce said with a forced smile.Knox nodded slowly before turning back to Adrian. “You’re startin
AdrianI watched Chloe all but flee the room, the door closing behind her gently despite her rolling emotions. I didn’t have to have a bond with her to read the confusion that had played across her face when I’d touched her. Fuck, I’d done more than touch her. I’d kissed her.I was out of control. I knew it, but there was nothing I could do to stop the feelings that were rolling around inside me, and it was only a matter of time before I exploded, even worse than I had tonight. When Bryce had danced with Chloe, it had taken all my self-control not to run across the room and rip her from his arms. And when he’d kissed her forehead? I’d seen red. Bryce was lucky it was just the glass in my hand that I’d destroyed and not his face.Alexander cleared his throat, and I returned my gaze to him with a frown. I waited for him to speak. While Knox rarely thought before he spoke, Alexander was always deliberate with his words. He was the calm one, the peacekeeper in our brotherhood. I was used
ChloeMy smile was frozen in place. I had not been prepared to have King Charles announce to a room full of Alphas and their dates that I was available and on the market. When he finally turned to me, he gave me a gentle smile that crinkled his eyes. “I’m sure you have questions,” he said. “But we’re in the middle of the ball right now. We can meet in my study afterward and discuss anything you wish.”I wanted to stamp my foot like a little girl and demand answers right now, but instead, I inclined my head regally. “Of course.”His smile brightened. “Go have fun, Harper. Dance the night away with all the Alphas who so desperately want to win your favor.”I rolled my eyes but accepted the soft command as it was intended. I spent the rest of the night dancing with every eligible bachelor in attendance, save one. I avoided Caden like the plague, and although I had never told my brothers to keep Caden away from me tonight, they did an excellent job doing just so. I somehow managed to stay
CadenThe moment we left the ball Leah grabbed onto my hand. I tried to tug my hand out of her grip, but she held on tight. Luckily, she had behaved herself at the ball. She’d stuck by my side, but she knew what her role was as my guest.“Are you going to pursue the princess?” Leah asked, jealousy poisoning her words.“I might.” I didn’t really want to argue with her. While my father had determined I would take care of Leah before I’d become Alpha, I didn’t like her very much. She was rude and entitled and I didn’t like her before her father’s death, and I definitely didn’t like her now. I pulled my hand out of her grip and shoved my hands in my pockets.“But don’t you think it’s strange?” she pushed. “All of a sudden King Charles has a daughter that’s been kept secret for her entire life?”I did think it was strange, and I was as shocked by the news as the rest of the guests were, but I wasn’t going to tell Leah that. “There’s lots of reasons why Princess Harper could have been kept
King CharlesTo my horror, the seizures don’t stop. With every pill that doesn’t work, my panic raises. There’s an answer out there somewhere, but I don’t know where.I start being able to warn others when I’m about to pass out, which is only marginally helpful. My closest advisor, Kellin, visited me during my second week of bedrest.“King Charles,” he greeted me.“Kellin.”“Are we alone?”I nodded and watched with mild amusement while Kellin relaxed and sat down next to my bed. “Formalities are so annoying, Charles.”“Don’t I know it,” I muttered.“So, give it to me straight. How bad is it?”I opened my mouth to tell him that it wasn’t that bad, bu
King CharlesGrief does funny things to people.Byles found me in my study, staring out the window instead of doing anything work related. He took the seat next to me and waited for me to acknowledge him before speaking.“Did you know?” I finally asked, turning to look at him.He didn’t pretend to not know what I was talking about. He nodded slowly.“I figured as much. You ran the DNA tests for everyone. It only made sense that you knew, and you kept the truth from me.” I turned back to the window. It hurt to look at my younger brother.“I never meant to hurt you,” Byles finally said. “I only meant to protect Natalie.”“Were you one of the ones she fucked?” I asked, my voice mild despite my words.I saw Byle flinch out of the corner of m
Adrian“Where are you staying?” Chloe asked, pulling back from our kiss.I frowned at her, my brain muddled from having her too close. “What?”“Where are you staying?” she asked again.I pulled back and frowned. “At the Knight Inn.”Chloe crinkled her nose at this news. “That place is known for its roaches.”I thought back to the roaches that had scurried out of sight when I’d entered my room. “Trust me, I know, but all the rooms were rented out every other place because of the wedding. I’m not exactly thrilled about it, but for the moment it’s my only option.”“That’s not true,” Chloe said, shaking her head.“What’s not true?”“You have another option
ChloeI stared at Adiran, my heart racing.“What?” he repeated, staring at my stomach with wide eyes.Caden cleared his throat when neither of us appeared to say anything. “Chloe, I think he’s asking you a question.”“What?” I said, tearing my eyes away from Adrian’s shocked face.Caden sighed as if we were causing him pain. “I think Adrian is asking if you, you know,” he gestured towards my stomach.I turned back to Adrian.“Are you pregnant?” Adrian asked, his voice soft.I nodded. To my confusion, Adrian turned and decked Caden right in the nose. His first made a crunching noise as it made contact with Caden’s nose.“Adrian!” I screamed.Caden stagg
CadenPrince Adrian did not look good. He looked tired, to start off with but he was also sweaty as if he’d been running. Had he been running? That didn’t make sense – he was wearing dress pants and a button down. Those weren’t running clothes. There’s no way he’d been running. But if he hadn’t been running why had he been sweaty? Also, and most importantly, why was he at my sister’s wedding looking for Chloe?“Prince Adrian, Chloe isn’t here. She was invited, but she wasn’t feeling well. We all understand, of course.”He blinked at me, clearly not understanding the words I was saying. I sighed and rubbed my eyes. “Why don’t you come in here with me and we can get it all cleared up.”The prince followed me without complaint, a sure sign that he really wasn’t feeling wel
AdrianI knew exactly where the Blackstone Pack was, but getting there was a different story. It was hidden deep in the mountains, spanning hundreds of miles. There was so much space, and I didn’t know exactly where Chloe might be. She could be in the capital city, or she could be off in the mountains in a tiny cabin, away from the world. I hoped she was with people who loved her, but I wasn’t sure.I decided to go to the capital city first. It was the biggest city in the territory and where the Alpha lived. I didn’t want to see Caden, per se, but I had a feeling that wherever Chloe was, so was Caden. The thought sickened me, but there was nothing I could do if she’d decided to reunite with her old mate.I took comfort in the fact that she hadn’t broken her mate bond with me, so she couldn’t have reignited her mate bond with Caden. That was something, right? I alm
CadenI’d been surprised when Julie had come to me and told me that Chloe had approved the memorial for her mother. I’d half expected her to say no because she’d been the only one at the original burial. She’d been the only one who’d stood by her mother’s side.I realized after a moment that I shouldn’t have been surprised, though. Chloe was a far better person than I was, but I’d always known that. She really would be a great Luna if I’m able to convince her to be my mate again. I’d mostly given up on that dream, but a small part of me still hoped that she’d come back to me. Her and her baby. I knew I could be an amazing stepfather if she’d just let me. I already loved the kid, even though we were still several months away from meeting.I knocked twice on Chloe’s front door and waited. I heard some rustling from ins
ChloeLife settled after that breakfast with Caden. I didn’t know if Allison and Kaylee went around telling everyone about our conversation, but I got a lot less stares while I was out, even though I was visibly pregnant at this point.I’d taken a walk in the park early one morning and was taking a break on a bench when Julie, my mother’s ex best friend, sat down next to me uninvited.“Hello, Julie,” I sighed. I’d known this woman for almost a decade, but I couldn’t get over the fact that she had turned her back on my mother.“You must hate me,” Julie sighed deeply.I considered my answer carefully. “No, I don’t hate you, but I can’t reconcile the Julie who was my mom’s best friend with the Julie who turned her back on the same woman. Who does shit like that?”Julie winced at my words. “That’s fair, I suppose,”“What you did was really shitty.”“I know,” she sighed. “I am so sorry, Chloe.”I turned cold eyes to her. “I’m not the person you should be apologizing to.”Julie winced again.
ChloeCaden appeared on my doorstep Sunday morning but to my surprise he didn’t have any breakfast with him. It’d become out routine over the last couple of months for him to bring breakfast by on Sunday mornings and share it with me.I opened the door with a frown. “Where’s the food?”He gave me a small smile. “I thought we’d try something else,” he said carefully.“What?”“Why don’t we go to the diner? You love their breakfast.”I opened my mouth and then shut it without responding. I could think of several reasons why I didn’t want to do that. For starters, I was visibly pregnant, and I didn’t need any rumors going around that the baby was Caden’s. Half the town already assumed it was his, and he was doing little to dispel the rumor. I also didn’t want anyone to stare at me because of what happened with my mom and Leah. I didn’t anyone’s sympathy. Not like that, at least. Not like I was a sideshow attraction.“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea,” I hedge.“Come on, Chloe. You’
