Chloe
“I understand that your mother has passed on,” King Charles said gently.
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. The pain was still too real.
“I think I owe an explanation to you, Chloe. You may hate me afterward, but I feel like you deserve to know the truth.”
I doubted I could ever hate the wolf sitting beside me, still clutching my hand. He might be the King Alpha, but he was… safe. My wolf felt safe with him.
“I searched for many years for my mate, but I never found her. It was a different time, then, and with court politics… well, it was important there was a Queen Luna on the throne next to me, so I married a political friend. In many ways, she was suited for the throne better than I was, and I hoped to someday grow to love her. While she was everything a Queen Luna should be, I didn’t. There was always something missing, and we weren’t anything other than friends. I thought I was okay with that; I really did. But I did have a habit of slipping out of the palace and relaxing in the bars in town. I thought everyone would recognize me, but only a few did without the finery I was usually wearing.
“That’s where I met your mother. She was… she was everything. The moment I laid eyes on her, I knew that she was my mate, and I had to have her. I was selfish – I’ll be the first person to admit that. I was a selfish, self-centered man, and I made all the wrong decisions, but even now, I can’t say I regret a single one. Your mother was an astounding woman.”
I smiled softly at this. “She really was, wasn’t she?”
“I planned to tell her. I really did, but she found out before I could break the news to her myself. And she did the most selfless thing I’ve ever seen, both then and since. She broke our bond because her principles were stronger than her love for me. She refused to be the third person in my marriage. At the time, I was devasted by her disappearance, but now, with time, I’ve come to realize how extraordinary she was for making that decision in the first place. Of course, I didn’t know about you.”
“Would it have changed anything if you had?” I stared at King Charles thoughtfully, wondering if he understood what I was really asking.
“If you’re asking me if I’d have forced her to stay, the answer is no. I still would have let her make that decision for herself. It would have changed things, though. I would have insisted that you and I had a relationship. I’ve always wanted a daughter.” He gave me a sad smile, which I returned.
Making my decision, I said, “I would like to stay on the condition we don’t tell anyone who I am. I didn’t leave on the best terms with my pack, and I don’t want them coming to get me.”
“And when I inevitably have to reference you in public? What name would you like to use?” the King asked, no judgment in his voice.
“Harper,” I said automatically, and he gave me a small smile, recognizing my mother’s middle name.
“Harper, it is.” He rose and stretched. He was a tall man. “You are quite injured, as I’m sure you feel, and I know you need your rest. I will leave you to it.” He hesitated for a moment. “If you’re feeling up to it, I would like to visit you as you heal, as would your brothers.”
I didn’t bother to point out that two of my newfound brothers didn’t seem to want me here at all. Alexander seemed kind enough, though. “I would like that. No, I would love that.” I gave him a tentative smile.
“Excellent,” he beamed.
I only discovered after he left how right he’d been – I was severely injured. I collapsed just trying to get out of bed to use the restroom, my legs too weak to keep me up.
Even for a wolf, who healed far faster than a human, it took three months of R&R to get me up and going again. In that time period, King Charles and Alexander visited every day. Sometimes Knox was dragged along, but he always acted as if he disapproved of me being here.
Adrian was the one that confused me, though. He always seemed irritated when he found Alexander in my room without him, but even when he visited me on his own, his visits were awkward and silent. He rarely spoke to me.
Despite his attitude, my heart still fluttered slightly when he entered the room, which confused me. He was my brother, and I’d had a mate. I chalked it up to never know exactly what he wanted from me, which gave me anxiety.
It was King Charles who suggested we throw a ball to introduce me to werewolf society when I was able to be twirled about by Alexander. I’d never taken dance lessons, but he’d taken it upon himself to teach me the basics.
“A ball?” I gasped, out of breath and smiling. “Doesn’t that seem a bit extravagant?”
Adrian sighed from the corner of the room where he was… glaring at his brother. “Our father is known for being extravagant. It’s his style. Besides, I think it’s a great idea.”
I glanced over at him, surprised. He rarely thought anything was a great idea when it wasn’t his own.
“Perfect!” King Charles clapped. “I’ll get right on the preparations. Now, who is going to walk you down at your grand entrance?”
Alexander volunteered immediately. “It would be my honor, Princess,” he winked at me.
It was still weird being called Princess. I think the group, in general, was trying to get me accustomed to the title.
“It’s decided,” King Charles clapped in excitement.
“We have a problem,” Adrian drawled, straightening and walking over to us.
“Oh?”
Adrian sighed as if our ignorance was paining him. “What’s the point of Chloe going by Harper if we’re invited members from her old pack to the ball? They’ll recognize her instantly.”
The three of us exchanged a glance.
“Why don’t we make it a masked ball?” I suggested, surprising both myself and everyone in the room.
King Charles and Alexander started murmuring to themselves about the pros and cons.
Adrian turned his bright gaze directly onto me, and I felt burned alive by the attention. “A mask could work.”
“Then it’s decided! We’re having a masked ball! Come on, boys. Let’s start planning. We’ll need to send the seamstress up to Chloe immediately.”
The ball came up far faster than I expected, and before I knew it, I was at the top of the stairs, just out of sight in my beaded blue dress, waiting for Alexander to make my grand entrance.
“Princess.”
I turned, surprised to find Adrian extending his hand for me to take. I stared at him, my brow furrowed. “Alexander is supposed to be the one escorting me.”
Adrian arched an eyebrow. “Change of plans.”
I opened my mouth to insist he get his younger brother but closed it at the last second and swallowed. Obviously, the King had given his approval to change them out. I reached out my hand slowly, watching him swallow mine in his grip, a shock going right up my arm from our joined hands.
I stared down, confused. Had he just shocked me? It didn’t feel like static electricity, though. I glanced up through my eyelashes at him, and he was staring down at me, with an unreadable expression on his face.
“Here we go, Princess.”
ChloeThe moment we stepped down the first step, the whispers started. Well, they weren’t really whispers with my superior wolf hearing.“Who is that?”“Is that Prince Adrian’s bride?”“He never escorts anyone!”“She must be special!”“They think we’re together,” I whispered out of the corner of my mouth, making sure to keep my bright, coached smile in place. I’d learned it in one of my many lessons on how to be a Princess.Adrian ignored me just as surely as he was ignoring the whispers. I shouldn’t be hurt, but I was. As if sensing my unhappiness, Adrian whispered at the halfway mark, “They’re just upset because you’re beautiful, and they can’t place you. Wolves are gossips – they all want to be the first person to figure out who you are.”I was stunned, not by his pronouncement, but because he’d called me beautiful. And he’d dropped it so casually as if it was the most natural thing in the world to say. I wanted to turn and see if he was looking at me, but I didn’t dare take my gaz
ChloeWerewolves were natural gossips. I pushed the thought away as soon as it appeared in my mind; Adrian was my half-brother. We were related. The Moon Goddess didn’t pair siblings together – inbreeding was nonexistent.A motion to the left of us caught my eye, and I turned to find Knox approaching, his expression wary. “Are you okay?” Knox said, stepping forward slightly with a frown. I wasn’t sure who he was speaking to me, Adrian or Bryce. Perhaps he was asking all three of us.“I’m fine,” Adrian snarled. Knox’s eyes widened in surprise, and he stopped advancing. I almost felt bad for him. While Adrian wasn’t the warmest person to me, he seemed to be very close to his younger brothers and loved them very much. I was sure Knox wasn’t used to his eldest brother speaking to him in such a manner.“We’re all good, Knox. Thank you for checking on us. We are just having a little discussion,” Bryce said with a forced smile.Knox nodded slowly before turning back to Adrian. “You’re startin
AdrianI watched Chloe all but flee the room, the door closing behind her gently despite her rolling emotions. I didn’t have to have a bond with her to read the confusion that had played across her face when I’d touched her. Fuck, I’d done more than touch her. I’d kissed her.I was out of control. I knew it, but there was nothing I could do to stop the feelings that were rolling around inside me, and it was only a matter of time before I exploded, even worse than I had tonight. When Bryce had danced with Chloe, it had taken all my self-control not to run across the room and rip her from his arms. And when he’d kissed her forehead? I’d seen red. Bryce was lucky it was just the glass in my hand that I’d destroyed and not his face.Alexander cleared his throat, and I returned my gaze to him with a frown. I waited for him to speak. While Knox rarely thought before he spoke, Alexander was always deliberate with his words. He was the calm one, the peacekeeper in our brotherhood. I was used
ChloeMy smile was frozen in place. I had not been prepared to have King Charles announce to a room full of Alphas and their dates that I was available and on the market. When he finally turned to me, he gave me a gentle smile that crinkled his eyes. “I’m sure you have questions,” he said. “But we’re in the middle of the ball right now. We can meet in my study afterward and discuss anything you wish.”I wanted to stamp my foot like a little girl and demand answers right now, but instead, I inclined my head regally. “Of course.”His smile brightened. “Go have fun, Harper. Dance the night away with all the Alphas who so desperately want to win your favor.”I rolled my eyes but accepted the soft command as it was intended. I spent the rest of the night dancing with every eligible bachelor in attendance, save one. I avoided Caden like the plague, and although I had never told my brothers to keep Caden away from me tonight, they did an excellent job doing just so. I somehow managed to stay
CadenThe moment we left the ball Leah grabbed onto my hand. I tried to tug my hand out of her grip, but she held on tight. Luckily, she had behaved herself at the ball. She’d stuck by my side, but she knew what her role was as my guest.“Are you going to pursue the princess?” Leah asked, jealousy poisoning her words.“I might.” I didn’t really want to argue with her. While my father had determined I would take care of Leah before I’d become Alpha, I didn’t like her very much. She was rude and entitled and I didn’t like her before her father’s death, and I definitely didn’t like her now. I pulled my hand out of her grip and shoved my hands in my pockets.“But don’t you think it’s strange?” she pushed. “All of a sudden King Charles has a daughter that’s been kept secret for her entire life?”I did think it was strange, and I was as shocked by the news as the rest of the guests were, but I wasn’t going to tell Leah that. “There’s lots of reasons why Princess Harper could have been kept
ChloeI didn’t get up until 1 in the afternoon, and even then, the palace was still quiet. Everyone was still sleeping as no one had gone to sleep before 4 am. The halls were eerily quiet when I ventured out, which was fine by me. While I’d never been told that I had to stay in my rooms, or even on the palace grounds, I wasn’t sure how King Charles or my brothers would deal with me going out into the city.I’d been dying to venture out, but while I was healing it wasn’t an option. I was better, now, and the Capital City was probably the safest place in the werewolf world. I would be fine out on my own, even if my family wasn’t convinced.I paused, surprised. My family had always been my mom, but now I realized I extended the title to King Charles and my brothers. What a surreal feeling.“Whatcha doing, Chloe?”I jumped and twirled, glaring at Bryce. “You scared the shit out of me!”Bryce chuckled. “You looked like you were thinking about something extra hard. Care to share?”I bit my
AdrianI was sitting at my desk with my headphones in the afternoon after the ball, trying to get some work done, when Knox let himself in and immediately went to the window behind me.I pulled out my earbuds with a frown and turned to him. “What’re you doing, Knox?” My brother didn’t normally interrupt me when I was in the study, so I knew this was something important.“They’re so fucking loud,” he growled, his face still pressed to the glass. “Can’t they be a bit quieter? They woke me up.”I was about to ask him what he meant when the noise finally registered. I hadn’t heard it before because I had been listening to music, but there was definitely a dull roar coming from outside. I rose and made my way to the window. Knox stepped aside so I could see out. To my surprise there was a hoard of people at the main gates. I’d never seen anything like it before.“What the hell do they want?”Knox snorted. “Chloe. They’re all here in hopes of getting an audience with Princess Harper.” His t
AdrianI reached across the bar and grabbed Al by the collar, unable to control myself. “What room are they in?” I growled, the threat clear. While any other patron would have been thrown out for this kind of behavior, there was nothing he could do. I was the Crown Prince.Al swallowed audibly, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “I don’t know,” he stuttered. “I just know he went up.”I let Al go and took a step back, debating my next move. I could go upstairs and start banging on doors, but that might give me away before I made it to Bryce. Not to mention I didn’t want everyone in a room to see Chloe and Bryce together. Then they’d have to get married. The thought sickened me,I can track Bryce, my wolf whispered to me. We’ve known him for years. I can get you to him to save Chloe.I considered his offer for only a moment before accepting his offer. While my wolf hadn’t been able to track Chloe earlier, I knew for a fact he could track Bryce.Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath and leased my
King CharlesTo my horror, the seizures don’t stop. With every pill that doesn’t work, my panic raises. There’s an answer out there somewhere, but I don’t know where.I start being able to warn others when I’m about to pass out, which is only marginally helpful. My closest advisor, Kellin, visited me during my second week of bedrest.“King Charles,” he greeted me.“Kellin.”“Are we alone?”I nodded and watched with mild amusement while Kellin relaxed and sat down next to my bed. “Formalities are so annoying, Charles.”“Don’t I know it,” I muttered.“So, give it to me straight. How bad is it?”I opened my mouth to tell him that it wasn’t that bad, bu
King CharlesGrief does funny things to people.Byles found me in my study, staring out the window instead of doing anything work related. He took the seat next to me and waited for me to acknowledge him before speaking.“Did you know?” I finally asked, turning to look at him.He didn’t pretend to not know what I was talking about. He nodded slowly.“I figured as much. You ran the DNA tests for everyone. It only made sense that you knew, and you kept the truth from me.” I turned back to the window. It hurt to look at my younger brother.“I never meant to hurt you,” Byles finally said. “I only meant to protect Natalie.”“Were you one of the ones she fucked?” I asked, my voice mild despite my words.I saw Byle flinch out of the corner of m
Adrian“Where are you staying?” Chloe asked, pulling back from our kiss.I frowned at her, my brain muddled from having her too close. “What?”“Where are you staying?” she asked again.I pulled back and frowned. “At the Knight Inn.”Chloe crinkled her nose at this news. “That place is known for its roaches.”I thought back to the roaches that had scurried out of sight when I’d entered my room. “Trust me, I know, but all the rooms were rented out every other place because of the wedding. I’m not exactly thrilled about it, but for the moment it’s my only option.”“That’s not true,” Chloe said, shaking her head.“What’s not true?”“You have another option
ChloeI stared at Adiran, my heart racing.“What?” he repeated, staring at my stomach with wide eyes.Caden cleared his throat when neither of us appeared to say anything. “Chloe, I think he’s asking you a question.”“What?” I said, tearing my eyes away from Adrian’s shocked face.Caden sighed as if we were causing him pain. “I think Adrian is asking if you, you know,” he gestured towards my stomach.I turned back to Adrian.“Are you pregnant?” Adrian asked, his voice soft.I nodded. To my confusion, Adrian turned and decked Caden right in the nose. His first made a crunching noise as it made contact with Caden’s nose.“Adrian!” I screamed.Caden stagg
CadenPrince Adrian did not look good. He looked tired, to start off with but he was also sweaty as if he’d been running. Had he been running? That didn’t make sense – he was wearing dress pants and a button down. Those weren’t running clothes. There’s no way he’d been running. But if he hadn’t been running why had he been sweaty? Also, and most importantly, why was he at my sister’s wedding looking for Chloe?“Prince Adrian, Chloe isn’t here. She was invited, but she wasn’t feeling well. We all understand, of course.”He blinked at me, clearly not understanding the words I was saying. I sighed and rubbed my eyes. “Why don’t you come in here with me and we can get it all cleared up.”The prince followed me without complaint, a sure sign that he really wasn’t feeling wel
AdrianI knew exactly where the Blackstone Pack was, but getting there was a different story. It was hidden deep in the mountains, spanning hundreds of miles. There was so much space, and I didn’t know exactly where Chloe might be. She could be in the capital city, or she could be off in the mountains in a tiny cabin, away from the world. I hoped she was with people who loved her, but I wasn’t sure.I decided to go to the capital city first. It was the biggest city in the territory and where the Alpha lived. I didn’t want to see Caden, per se, but I had a feeling that wherever Chloe was, so was Caden. The thought sickened me, but there was nothing I could do if she’d decided to reunite with her old mate.I took comfort in the fact that she hadn’t broken her mate bond with me, so she couldn’t have reignited her mate bond with Caden. That was something, right? I alm
CadenI’d been surprised when Julie had come to me and told me that Chloe had approved the memorial for her mother. I’d half expected her to say no because she’d been the only one at the original burial. She’d been the only one who’d stood by her mother’s side.I realized after a moment that I shouldn’t have been surprised, though. Chloe was a far better person than I was, but I’d always known that. She really would be a great Luna if I’m able to convince her to be my mate again. I’d mostly given up on that dream, but a small part of me still hoped that she’d come back to me. Her and her baby. I knew I could be an amazing stepfather if she’d just let me. I already loved the kid, even though we were still several months away from meeting.I knocked twice on Chloe’s front door and waited. I heard some rustling from ins
ChloeLife settled after that breakfast with Caden. I didn’t know if Allison and Kaylee went around telling everyone about our conversation, but I got a lot less stares while I was out, even though I was visibly pregnant at this point.I’d taken a walk in the park early one morning and was taking a break on a bench when Julie, my mother’s ex best friend, sat down next to me uninvited.“Hello, Julie,” I sighed. I’d known this woman for almost a decade, but I couldn’t get over the fact that she had turned her back on my mother.“You must hate me,” Julie sighed deeply.I considered my answer carefully. “No, I don’t hate you, but I can’t reconcile the Julie who was my mom’s best friend with the Julie who turned her back on the same woman. Who does shit like that?”Julie winced at my words. “That’s fair, I suppose,”“What you did was really shitty.”“I know,” she sighed. “I am so sorry, Chloe.”I turned cold eyes to her. “I’m not the person you should be apologizing to.”Julie winced again.
ChloeCaden appeared on my doorstep Sunday morning but to my surprise he didn’t have any breakfast with him. It’d become out routine over the last couple of months for him to bring breakfast by on Sunday mornings and share it with me.I opened the door with a frown. “Where’s the food?”He gave me a small smile. “I thought we’d try something else,” he said carefully.“What?”“Why don’t we go to the diner? You love their breakfast.”I opened my mouth and then shut it without responding. I could think of several reasons why I didn’t want to do that. For starters, I was visibly pregnant, and I didn’t need any rumors going around that the baby was Caden’s. Half the town already assumed it was his, and he was doing little to dispel the rumor. I also didn’t want anyone to stare at me because of what happened with my mom and Leah. I didn’t anyone’s sympathy. Not like that, at least. Not like I was a sideshow attraction.“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea,” I hedge.“Come on, Chloe. You’
