Chloe

I hadn’t slept this well in months – since before Conson died. Ever since that night, it’s been one fitful night’s sleep after another, and it’d only worsened when Mom got sick.

“I think she’s waking up!” somehow whispered.

“Let the poor girl wake up in her own time,” a different voice chastised. “She doesn’t need your screeching.”

“Boys,” a deep voice sighed. “Can we shelve this until Chloe is awake?”

I started to my name, my eyes flying open. I was in a grand bed, surrounded by four men, three younger and one old enough to be my father. I paused at this thought, squinting at the older man who was sitting next to my bed. There’d been something about my father… information I’d just learned recently… I traced the man’s features as we stared at each other. We had the same nose and the same hazel eyes. They were even shaped similar to mine.

In a rush, the last few weeks came back to me, and with them, the knowledge that King Charles was my father.

“You’re King Alpha Charles,” I croaked out. I almost didn’t recognize my own voice. It was rough like I hadn’t had water in years.

He nodded slowly.

I glanced past him and found three very handsome men standing in a group at the end of my bed. The youngest looked bored and like he’d rather I be anyplace else. He was colored the same as the middle son, which meant they were both colored like King Alpha Charles. In fact, everyone in the room had the same auburn hair and hazel eyes, except for the last one. He was a hand taller than the others, with dark hair and eyes almost black in color. He was… well, they all were very handsome wolves.

“Do you know who I am to you?”

I turned back to King Charles with a frown. “Are you asking if I know you’re my biological father?”

He nodded.

I shrugged, then winced. My body felt like it’d been run over by a truck… or like I’d been attacked by a pack of wolves. “I was told.”

Everyone in the room seemed to be holding their breath, waiting for me to say more. I glanced around at all their faces, completely lost. “Am I missing something?”

The youngest son snorted. “You understand that makes you a Princess, right?”

I blinked at him, then turned to King Charles. “I don’t really have to be, you know. No one has to know about me. Your other.. children?” I asked, gesturing at the three men.

“Oh! Yes, these are my sons. The youngest is Knox, the middle is Alexander, and the oldest is Adrian. They’re my children with the late Luna.”

So, the third brother must take after his mother… Interestingly, King Charles’s genetics hadn’t pulled through as much with his first son. But genetics were wild things, and no two kids were ever the same.

“It’s a pleasure,” I said in general.

“The pleasure is ours, Princess,” Alexander said. He seemed genuine – he didn’t give off any indication that he was unhappy I was her convalescing in this bedroom.

Knox rolled his eyes. “Can I go now, Father? I’ve met her. Isn’t that what you required?”

King Charles closed his eyes for a moment, and I knew he was trying not to snap at Knox. “You are correct, Knox; that was all I required of you. You may go.”

Knox wasted no time, turning on his heels and stomping out of the room.

From the cold look Adrian was giving me, I figured he would be the next one to leave, but instead, he leaned against the bottom of the bed as if he had all the time in the world.

“I apologize for Knox,” King Charles sighed. “He’s the baby, and he isn’t thrilled to have to share the limelight with someone else.”

“It’s okay,” I sighed. “I get it. I’m sure finding out there’s a stranger being forced into your family isn’t easy.”

“You are no stranger,” King Charles growled. “You are my daughter.”

I turned to him slightly, careful not to move my neck too much. “No offense, King Charles, but you don’t know me at all. I am a stranger to everyone here.”

“Father, this must be quite shocking for her. Give her a pass this time – I’m sure she’ll hear one of your famous lectures before the week is out.” Alexander gave me a warm smile. “Why don’t we tell her what happened? I’m sure she wants to know.”

I shot him a small, grateful smile. “I do want to know what happened. The last things I remember don’t make a lot of sense. I don’t know if I got them mixed up or what, but they certainly don’t explain how I ended up here.”

“Let’s start with what you do remember,” King Charles said.

“I was at the Inheritance ceremony for my mate… well, my ex-mate and the platform collapsed. I pushed him out of the way, and then nothing. The next thing I knew, I was waking up in the forest alone, injured. I was trying to get home when I was attacked and injured, and the next thing I know, I’m waking up here.” I paused, considering my situation. “Does my pack know where I am?”

“No,” Adrian said curtly.

“Good. I think it’s best they don’t know where I’m off to.”

“Off to?” Kind Charles chuckled. “My dear girl, you’re not off to anywhere. This is your home now. You’re our Princess, and you aren’t going to go anywhere at all.”

“But…” I trailed off, trying to think of a good reason why I should go. “But I still don’t know how I got here.”

Alexander sank down onto the edge of the bed. “You were found by Samson, and he brought you here as quickly as he could for medical attention.”

I stared at him blankly. “Who’s Samson?”

King Charles frowned. “My investigator. You met with him at the graveyard, didn’t you?”

I stared at him blankly, and then it clicked. “Oh, you mean the man in the black cloak. I never got his name.” I paused, considering my next words. “Was he following me?”

King Charles cleared his throat. “Sort of. Not closely, which is why it took so long for him to get to you.”

“Oh.”

King Charles took my hand gently, making sure he didn’t squeeze any of my bruises. “I want to make it clear to you, Chloe, that you are my daughter in the same way these are my sons. I may not have been able to be there for you at the start of your life through my own folly, but I’ll be making it up to you now. You are a member of this household.”

My chest tightened at his words, and I prayed a tear wouldn’t escape. “That’s very kind of you.”

“It’s nothing.” He paused and then turned to Alexander and Adrian. “Boys, could you leave us alone? I have something I’d like to discuss with Chloe in private.”

Curiosity prickled as I watched Alexander and Adrian – my brothers – leave, closing the door quietly behind him.

He might be the King Alpha, but he was… safe. My wolf felt safe with him.“I searched for many years for my mate, but I never found her. It was a different time, then, and with court politics… well, it was important there was a Queen Luna on the throne next to me, so I married a political friend. In many ways, she was suited for the throne better than I was, and I hoped to someday grow to love her. While she was everything a Queen Luna should be, I didn’t. There was always something missing, and we weren’t anything other than friends. I thought I was okay with that; I really did. But I did have a habit of slipping out of the palace and relaxi

ChloeThe moment we stepped down the first step, the whispers started. Well, they weren’t really whispers with my superior wolf hearing.“Who is that?”“Is that Prince Adrian’s bride?”“He never escorts anyone!”“She must be special!”“They think we’re together,” I whispered out of the corner of my mouth, making sure to keep my bright, coached smile in place. I’d learned it in one of my many lessons on how to be a Princess.Adrian ignored me just as surely as he was ignoring the whispers. I shouldn’t be hurt, but I was. As if sensing my unhappiness, Adrian whispered at the halfway mark, “They’re just upset because you’re beautiful, and they can’t place you. Wolves are gossips – they all want to be the first person to figure out who you are.”I was stunned, not by his pronouncement, but because he’d called me beautiful. And he’d dropped it so casually as if it was the most natural thing in the world to say. I wanted to turn and see if he was looking at me, but I didn’t dare take my gaz

ChloeWerewolves were natural gossips. I pushed the thought away as soon as it appeared in my mind; Adrian was my half-brother. We were related. The Moon Goddess didn’t pair siblings together – inbreeding was nonexistent.A motion to the left of us caught my eye, and I turned to find Knox approaching, his expression wary. “Are you okay?” Knox said, stepping forward slightly with a frown. I wasn’t sure who he was speaking to me, Adrian or Bryce. Perhaps he was asking all three of us.“I’m fine,” Adrian snarled. Knox’s eyes widened in surprise, and he stopped advancing. I almost felt bad for him. While Adrian wasn’t the warmest person to me, he seemed to be very close to his younger brothers and loved them very much. I was sure Knox wasn’t used to his eldest brother speaking to him in such a manner.“We’re all good, Knox. Thank you for checking on us. We are just having a little discussion,” Bryce said with a forced smile.Knox nodded slowly before turning back to Adrian. “You’re starti

AdrianI watched Chloe all but flee the room, the door closing behind her gently despite her rolling emotions. I didn’t have to have a bond with her to read the confusion that had played across her face when I’d touched her. Fuck, I’d done more than touch her. I’d kissed her.I was out of control. I knew it, but there was nothing I could do to stop the feelings that were rolling around inside me, and it was only a matter of time before I exploded, even worse than I had tonight. When Bryce had danced with Chloe, it had taken all my self-control not to run across the room and rip her from his arms. And when he’d kissed her forehead? I’d seen red. Bryce was lucky it was just the glass in my hand that I’d destroyed and not his face.Alexander cleared his throat, and I returned my gaze to him with a frown. I waited for him to speak. While Knox rarely thought before he spoke, Alexander was always deliberate with his words. He was the calm one, the peacekeeper in our brotherhood. I was used

ChloeMy smile was frozen in place. I had not been prepared to have King Charles announce to a room full of Alphas and their dates that I was available and on the market. When he finally turned to me, he gave me a gentle smile that crinkled his eyes. “I’m sure you have questions,” he said. “But we’re in the middle of the ball right now. We can meet in my study afterward and discuss anything you wish.”I wanted to stamp my foot like a little girl and demand answers right now, but instead, I inclined my head regally. “Of course.”His smile brightened. “Go have fun, Harper. Dance the night away with all the Alphas who so desperately want to win your favor.”I rolled my eyes but accepted the soft command as it was intended. I spent the rest of the night dancing with every eligible bachelor in attendance, save one. I avoided Caden like the plague, and although I had never told my brothers to keep Caden away from me tonight, they did an excellent job doing just so. I somehow managed to stay

CadenThe moment we left the ball Leah grabbed onto my hand. I tried to tug my hand out of her grip, but she held on tight. Luckily, she had behaved herself at the ball. She’d stuck by my side, but she knew what her role was as my guest.“Are you going to pursue the princess?” Leah asked, jealousy poisoning her words.“I might.” I didn’t really want to argue with her. While my father had determined I would take care of Leah before I’d become Alpha, I didn’t like her very much. She was rude and entitled and I didn’t like her before her father’s death, and I definitely didn’t like her now. I pulled my hand out of her grip and shoved my hands in my pockets.“But don’t you think it’s strange?” she pushed. “All of a sudden King Charles has a daughter that’s been kept secret for her entire life?”I did think it was strange, and I was as shocked by the news as the rest of the guests were, but I wasn’t going to tell Leah that. “There’s lots of reasons why Princess Harper could have been kept

ChloeI didn’t get up until 1 in the afternoon, and even then, the palace was still quiet. Everyone was still sleeping as no one had gone to sleep before 4 am. The halls were eerily quiet when I ventured out, which was fine by me. While I’d never been told that I had to stay in my rooms, or even on the palace grounds, I wasn’t sure how King Charles or my brothers would deal with me going out into the city.I’d been dying to venture out, but while I was healing it wasn’t an option. I was better, now, and the Capital City was probably the safest place in the werewolf world. I would be fine out on my own, even if my family wasn’t convinced.I paused, surprised. My family had always been my mom, but now I realized I extended the title to King Charles and my brothers. What a surreal feeling.“Whatcha doing, Chloe?”I jumped and twirled, glaring at Bryce. “You scared the shit out of me!”Bryce chuckled. “You looked like you were thinking about something extra hard. They woke me up.”I was about to ask him what he meant when the noise finally registered. I hadn’t heard it before because I had been listening to music, but there was definitely a dull roar coming from outside. I rose and made my way to the window. Knox stepped aside so I could see out. To my surprise there was a hoard of people at the main gates. I’d never seen anything like it before.“What the hell do they want?”Knox snorted. “Chloe. Because we hadn’t broken the mate bond, I was still connected to her, although the clarity with which I felt her presence weakened the farther she traveled. I felt like I was losing a piece of myself, and I wondered for the first time if I should break the mate bond. We didn’t have to be together for one of us to do it.My father visited after dinner. I’d refused to go down, instead staying in my rooms. After my conversation with my brothers earlier, I was confused.“You didn’t come to eat,” Father said, joining me on the window seat I’d been sitting in for the last hour.“I know.”“Why?”“I wasn’t hungry,” I said, keeping my eyes fixed out the window at the gardens down belo

I stopped walking in the middle of the sidewalk, nearly getting run over in the process by other pedestrians.Something wasn't right with Chloe's story, and I hadn't realized it initially because I'd been too shocked by Chloe admitting to having an affair with Caden. Or rekindling their relationship - whatever you wanted to call it. It felt like an affair to me, but I wasn’t about to argue the semantics.I turned on my heel and stormed back to the hotel, breezing past the front desk and back up to Caden's room. I banged on the door repeatedly, and after several moments, Chloe opened the door with a frown, still wearing Caden’s shirt. The sight made my stomach roll in disgust."Adrian?" He was far too forgiving where I was concerned, and I knew he’d look for any excuse not to leave me and break the bond.Unfortunately, since we’d done the marking ceremony, the only way to break our mate bond was to have one of us desire to break it with all our heart. It didn’t seem like a trick, except for the fact that the very last thing I wanted was to break the mate bond. I loved Adrian and always would. The only way to break the bond was to make him hate me enough to want to. The thought sickened me.Adrian arrived right at three. I loved him so deeply that I’d ignored the glaringly obvious: we were from two different worlds. The closest I came to being royalty was having a dead stepfather who was a Beta in my old pack. He’d been a kind man, but he’d been unpolished, too. I came from a different life, and I’d be a fool to stick around and destroy everything by being a terrible Queen Luna. Not to mention, if we stayed together Adrian would have to constantly be explaining our relationship to everyone. Since I’d been demoted to maid, I’d stayed out of the more public spaces in case someone recognized me. The yellow and blue sitting rooms were fairly busy spaces. “Alone?” I squeaked. She looked up and gave me a sharp look. “No. Since it’s your first day cleaning these two rooms, Hannah will be with you.”I nearly sighed in relief. Hannah was nice, even if I did think she chattered too much. I got it, though. If I was a talkative person, it’d be so hard to spend the workday alone.Once the head maid had given everyone their assignments, Hannah flounced over to me, a wide smile on her face. “Are you ready?”

He’d gallantly offered to stay a night in my room, but I only had a twin bed, and while I enjoyed cuddling with him, it was a bit too close in my new bed. Luckily, it hadn’t been too hard to convince him that his king-sized bed was superior.I knew Adrian had had some sort of fight with his father because he’d found me afterward. While he’d only muttered about crazy old men, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to put together that he was speaking about the King. The King’s rejection still stung, even if I understood it.“How do you feel about completing the marking ceremony?” Adrian asked as casually as one would ask abou

There’d been a time when she would have replied instantly. I’d thought it was borderline annoying at the time, but now I missed the closeness. I missed a lot of things about Chloe. That was the real problem; the farther away I got from my misplaced anger at her, the more I realized I fucked up. Because I had royally fucked up when I’d broken our bond.On the second day, with no response, I made the decision to go to King Charles himself. Not only was he King Alpha, but he was also Chloe’s father. I might not be able to force him to make her my mate again, but he could make her talk to me.
