Adrian

I watched Chloe all but flee the room, the door closing behind her gently despite her rolling emotions. I didn’t have to have a bond with her to read the confusion that had played across her face when I’d touched her. Fuck, I’d done more than touch her. I’d kissed her.

I was out of control. I knew it, but there was nothing I could do to stop the feelings that were rolling around inside me, and it was only a matter of time before I exploded, even worse than I had tonight. When Bryce had danced with Chloe, it had taken all my self-control not to run across the room and rip her from his arms. And when he’d kissed her forehead? I’d seen red. Bryce was lucky it was just the glass in my hand that I’d destroyed and not his face.

Alexander cleared his throat, and I returned my gaze to him with a frown. I waited for him to speak. While Knox rarely thought before he spoke, Alexander was always deliberate with his words. He was the calm one, the peacekeeper in our brotherhood. I was used

ChloeMy smile was frozen in place. I had not been prepared to have King Charles announce to a room full of Alphas and their dates that I was available and on the market. When he finally turned to me, he gave me a gentle smile that crinkled his eyes. “I’m sure you have questions,” he said. “But we’re in the middle of the ball right now. We can meet in my study afterward and discuss anything you wish.”I wanted to stamp my foot like a little girl and demand answers right now, but instead, I inclined my head regally. “Of course.”His smile brightened. “Go have fun, Harper. Dance the night away with all the Alphas who so desperately want to win your favor.”I rolled my eyes but accepted the soft command as it was intended. I spent the rest of the night dancing with every eligible bachelor in attendance, save one. I avoided Caden like the plague, and although I had never told my brothers to keep Caden away from me tonight, they did an excellent job doing just so. I somehow managed to stay

CadenThe moment we left the ball Leah grabbed onto my hand. I tried to tug my hand out of her grip, but she held on tight. Luckily, she had behaved herself at the ball. She’d stuck by my side, but she knew what her role was as my guest.“Are you going to pursue the princess?” Leah asked, jealousy poisoning her words.“I might.” I didn’t really want to argue with her. While my father had determined I would take care of Leah before I’d become Alpha, I didn’t like her very much. She was rude and entitled and I didn’t like her before her father’s death, and I definitely didn’t like her now. I pulled my hand out of her grip and shoved my hands in my pockets.“But don’t you think it’s strange?” she pushed. “All of a sudden King Charles has a daughter that’s been kept secret for her entire life?”I did think it was strange, and I was as shocked by the news as the rest of the guests were, but I wasn’t going to tell Leah that. “There’s lots of reasons why Princess Harper could have been kept

ChloeI didn’t get up until 1 in the afternoon, and even then, the palace was still quiet. Everyone was still sleeping as no one had gone to sleep before 4 am. The halls were eerily quiet when I ventured out, which was fine by me. While I’d never been told that I had to stay in my rooms, or even on the palace grounds, I wasn’t sure how King Charles or my brothers would deal with me going out into the city.I’d been dying to venture out, but while I was healing it wasn’t an option. I was better, now, and the Capital City was probably the safest place in the werewolf world. I would be fine out on my own, even if my family wasn’t convinced.I paused, surprised. My family had always been my mom, but now I realized I extended the title to King Charles and my brothers. What a surreal feeling.“Whatcha doing, Chloe?”I jumped and twirled, glaring at Bryce. “You scared the shit out of me!”Bryce chuckled. “You looked like you were thinking about something extra hard. Care to share?”I bit my

AdrianI was sitting at my desk with my headphones in the afternoon after the ball, trying to get some work done, when Knox let himself in and immediately went to the window behind me.I pulled out my earbuds with a frown and turned to him. “What’re you doing, Knox?” My brother didn’t normally interrupt me when I was in the study, so I knew this was something important.“They’re so fucking loud,” he growled, his face still pressed to the glass. “Can’t they be a bit quieter? They woke me up.”I was about to ask him what he meant when the noise finally registered. I hadn’t heard it before because I had been listening to music, but there was definitely a dull roar coming from outside. I rose and made my way to the window. Knox stepped aside so I could see out. To my surprise there was a hoard of people at the main gates. I’d never seen anything like it before.“What the hell do they want?”Knox snorted. “Chloe. They’re all here in hopes of getting an audience with Princess Harper.” His t

AdrianI reached across the bar and grabbed Al by the collar, unable to control myself. “What room are they in?” I growled, the threat clear. While any other patron would have been thrown out for this kind of behavior, there was nothing he could do. I was the Crown Prince.Al swallowed audibly, his Adam’s apple bobbing. “I don’t know,” he stuttered. “I just know he went up.”I let Al go and took a step back, debating my next move. I could go upstairs and start banging on doors, but that might give me away before I made it to Bryce. Not to mention I didn’t want everyone in a room to see Chloe and Bryce together. Then they’d have to get married. The thought sickened me,I can track Bryce, my wolf whispered to me. We’ve known him for years. I can get you to him to save Chloe.I considered his offer for only a moment before accepting his offer. While my wolf hadn’t been able to track Chloe earlier, I knew for a fact he could track Bryce.Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath and leased my

ChloeBryce and I separated as soon as we made it to the main street.“You’re the best, Bryce,” I said, beaming at him.He winked at me. “Don’t forget it, beautiful.” His words were flirty, but I knew he didn’t really mean it. “Now, don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”“So you’re giving me free range to do whatever I like?” I teased.“Absolutely. Now, there’s a stiff drink calling my name. See you later, Harper.” He sauntered off and I sighed.I wished I liked Bryce in that way. I really did. He was funny and kind and clever, and loyal to Adrian completely. And I did like him… but just, not like that. He was someone I would only ever see as a friend. What a pity.As soon as Bryce was out of view, I ducked back into the alley, pulling my backpack off as I went. I wasted no time in taking off the mask I was still wearing, followed by my sweatshirt and stuffing it into the backpack. I pulled out a baseball cap and slipped it on. It wasn’t one of my old, worn ones from back home, but I still

ChloeCaden reached down and grabbed me, pulling me into a bone crushing hug. Just as I was started to see stars, he pulled back, keeping his hands firmly on my shoulders and me in place. If I wanted to run for it, I’d have to rip myself from his grasp.“Chloe!” Relief and surprise mingled in his voice. I wanted to say it felt forced, but he was so open when his guard was down, as it was now. He was genuinely happy to have run into me.“Caden,” I greeted, more reserved.“What are you doing here?” he shook me slightly. “Where the hell have you been?”My mouth started falling open and I snapped it shut. “Why do you care?” the words came out harsher than I intended, but I didn’t bother apologizing. The old Chloe would have apologized so as not to cause issues between us. That Chloe died in the forest when I was attacked.“What’s wrong, Chloe?” His concern was genuine and that upset me. Why hadn’t he cared when Leah had been lying about me? Why couldn’t he have cared when he was breaking

AdrianI hadn’t meant to scare her, but Chloe jumped about a foot in the air when I spoke. She searched the room, her eyes landing on me. I sat in the wing backed chair in Chloe’s sitting area, staring at her guilty face. Wherever she had gone, she thought she shouldn’t have been there. Interesting. That narrowed down potential places significantly.“So? Where were you?” I asked again. I wanted to see if she’d admit to going… wherever she’d gone.“How long have you been sitting here?” she asked, countering my question with one of her own. She put her hands on her hips and tried to glare at me. Unfortunately for her she couldn’t work up the ire the look really needed.I’d gone to Chloe’s room as soon as I’d returned from the bar and had been sitting here ever since, waiting for her. When I thought too hard about it, it seemed creepy, but I hadn’t intended it that way. I just hadn’t known where else to go. I had to know that Chloe was okay before I could continue on with my day. AdrianI knew Chloe was gone the moment she stepped outside of the city borders. Because we hadn’t broken the mate bond, I was still connected to her, although the clarity with which I felt her presence weakened the farther she traveled. I felt like I was losing a piece of myself, and I wondered for the first time if I should break the mate bond. We didn’t have to be together for one of us to do it.My father visited after dinner. I’d refused to go down, instead staying in my rooms. After my conversation with my brothers earlier, I was confused.“You didn’t come to eat,” Father said, joining me on the window seat I’d been sitting in for the last hour.“I know.”“Why?”“I wasn’t hungry,” I said, keeping my eyes fixed out the window at the gardens down belo

AdrianI was a block away from the hotel when my anger finally faded enough for me to realize something wasn't adding up. I stopped walking in the middle of the sidewalk, nearly getting run over in the process by other pedestrians.Something wasn't right with Chloe's story, and I hadn't realized it initially because I'd been too shocked by Chloe admitting to having an affair with Caden. Or rekindling their relationship - whatever you wanted to call it. It felt like an affair to me, but I wasn’t about to argue the semantics.I turned on my heel and stormed back to the hotel, breezing past the front desk and back up to Caden's room. I banged on the door repeatedly, and after several moments, Chloe opened the door with a frown, still wearing Caden’s shirt. The sight made my stomach roll in disgust."Adrian?" Her voice was soft, and I could still see the fresh tear tracks stai

ChloeCaden and I spent the few hours between me barging in and Adrian’s arrival to plan out what we were going to do. I hated the idea of deceiving my mate, but I couldn’t think of any other way to make him leave me. He was far too forgiving where I was concerned, and I knew he’d look for any excuse not to leave me and break the bond.Unfortunately, since we’d done the marking ceremony, the only way to break our mate bond was to have one of us desire to break it with all our heart. It didn’t seem like a trick, except for the fact that the very last thing I wanted was to break the mate bond. I loved Adrian and always would. The only way to break the bond was to make him hate me enough to want to. The thought sickened me.Adrian arrived right at three. I didn’t know what his father had told him to get him here, but I had a sinking feeling from the angry banging on the do

ChloeI spent all night tossing and turning, unable to sleep. What I could do, though, was cry, and I cried until I had no tears left, and my pillow was soaked.I knew, deep in my heart, that Adrian deserved someone better than me to be his Queen Luna. I loved him so deeply that I’d ignored the glaringly obvious: we were from two different worlds. The closest I came to being royalty was having a dead stepfather who was a Beta in my old pack. He’d been a kind man, but he’d been unpolished, too. I came from a different life, and I’d be a fool to stick around and destroy everything by being a terrible Queen Luna. Not to mention, if we stayed together Adrian would have to constantly be explaining our relationship to everyone. He was expected to marry a polished woman who knew how to play the game, not a nobody like me.When the dawn broke, I kn

Chloe“You’ll be upstairs today, Chloe,” the head maid said, scanning her list. “The yellow and blue sitting rooms are yours.”I blinked at her in surprise. Since I’d been demoted to maid, I’d stayed out of the more public spaces in case someone recognized me. The yellow and blue sitting rooms were fairly busy spaces. “Alone?” I squeaked. She looked up and gave me a sharp look. “No. Since it’s your first day cleaning these two rooms, Hannah will be with you.”I nearly sighed in relief. Hannah was nice, even if I did think she chattered too much. I got it, though. If I was a talkative person, it’d be so hard to spend the workday alone.Once the head maid had given everyone their assignments, Hannah flounced over to me, a wide smile on her face. “Are you ready?”

ChloeEven though I’d been given a room downstairs with the other maids, I spent every night wrapped in Adrian’s arms in his rooms. He’d gallantly offered to stay a night in my room, but I only had a twin bed, and while I enjoyed cuddling with him, it was a bit too close in my new bed. Luckily, it hadn’t been too hard to convince him that his king-sized bed was superior.I knew Adrian had had some sort of fight with his father because he’d found me afterward. While he’d only muttered about crazy old men, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to put together that he was speaking about the King. I had a feeling the conversation was about me, and I wasn’t looking to find out the details. The King’s rejection still stung, even if I understood it.“How do you feel about completing the marking ceremony?” Adrian asked as casually as one would ask abou

AdrianI wasn't expecting a summons from my Father, and receiving one immediately put me on edge. A summons meant business, and more often than not, it was unpleasant. I couldn't ignore a summons, and he knew that.I entered his office without knocking. He was seated at his desk; however, his chair was turned to the window. I didn't think he was actually looking at anything out there."Sit," Father sighed, turning to me."No, thank you."He raised an eyebrow at this. I ignored him."I had a meeting this morning," Father said.I blinked in surprise. I was usually included in his meetings, especially now that my assentation to the throne was so near."And why wasn't I invited?""Well," Father paused. “I didn't know what he wanted to say, and I feared you might end the discussio

CadenChloe didn’t respond to my voicemail. She also didn’t respond to any of the texts I sent her, although I could see that she’d read them. That stung; I wasn’t going to lie. There’d been a time when she would have replied instantly. I’d thought it was borderline annoying at the time, but now I missed the closeness. I missed a lot of things about Chloe. That was the real problem; the farther away I got from my misplaced anger at her, the more I realized I fucked up. Because I had royally fucked up when I’d broken our bond.On the second day, with no response, I made the decision to go to King Charles himself. Not only was he King Alpha, but he was also Chloe’s father. I might not be able to force him to make her my mate again, but he could make her talk to me. That’s all I really wanted – a chance to plead my case before her. I knew she still loved me – she had to. Love didn’t just vanish like that. I knew I still loved he

CadenI watched Chloe leave, leaning heavily on Prince Adrian’s arm. They looked very familiar, and I wondered briefly if I’d missed some key piece of information besides Chloe being Princess Harper. The door at the end of the hall closed behind them.I wanted her back. No, I needed her back. I might not have realized what a blessing Chloe was when we were mates, but I saw it now. She’d stood by her attacker’s side and held her hand until the very end. I knew I wouldn’t have been able to do that if our roles were reversed.I royally fucked up. I should have never broken our mate bond. Maybe if I hadn’t, more people would be alive right now. I should have stood by her side because I knewher. I knew who Chloe was, and I’d willfully chosen blindness. I would not be making that error again.I waited until I was outside to call my fa
