Chloe

Bryce and I separated as soon as we made it to the main street.

“You’re the best, Bryce,” I said, beaming at him.

He winked at me. “Don’t forget it, beautiful.” His words were flirty, but I knew he didn’t really mean it. “Now, don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

“So you’re giving me free range to do whatever I like?” I teased.

“Absolutely. Now, there’s a stiff drink calling my name. See you later, Harper.” He sauntered off and I sighed.

I wished I liked Bryce in that way. I really did. He was funny and kind and clever, and loyal to Adrian completely. And I did like him… but just, not like that. He was someone I would only ever see as a friend. What a pity.

As soon as Bryce was out of view, I ducked back into the alley, pulling my backpack off as I went. I wasted no time in taking off the mask I was still wearing, followed by my sweatshirt and stuffing it into the backpack. I pulled out a baseball cap and slipped it on. It wasn’t one of my old, worn ones from back home, but I still

ChloeCaden reached down and grabbed me, pulling me into a bone crushing hug. Just as I was started to see stars, he pulled back, keeping his hands firmly on my shoulders and me in place. If I wanted to run for it, I’d have to rip myself from his grasp.“Chloe!” Relief and surprise mingled in his voice. I wanted to say it felt forced, but he was so open when his guard was down, as it was now. He was genuinely happy to have run into me.“Caden,” I greeted, more reserved.“What are you doing here?” he shook me slightly. “Where the hell have you been?”My mouth started falling open and I snapped it shut. “Why do you care?” the words came out harsher than I intended, but I didn’t bother apologizing. The old Chloe would have apologized so as not to cause issues between us. That Chloe died in the forest when I was attacked.“What’s wrong, Chloe?” His concern was genuine and that upset me. Why hadn’t he cared when Leah had been lying about me? Why couldn’t he have cared when he was breaking

AdrianI hadn’t meant to scare her, but Chloe jumped about a foot in the air when I spoke. She searched the room, her eyes landing on me. I sat in the wing backed chair in Chloe’s sitting area, staring at her guilty face. Wherever she had gone, she thought she shouldn’t have been there. Interesting. That narrowed down potential places significantly.“So? Where were you?” I asked again. I wanted to see if she’d admit to going… wherever she’d gone.“How long have you been sitting here?” she asked, countering my question with one of her own. She put her hands on her hips and tried to glare at me. Unfortunately for her she couldn’t work up the ire the look really needed.I’d gone to Chloe’s room as soon as I’d returned from the bar and had been sitting here ever since, waiting for her. When I thought too hard about it, it seemed creepy, but I hadn’t intended it that way. I just hadn’t known where else to go. I had to know that Chloe was okay before I could continue on with my day. I staye

ChloeAdrian rose from his seat and stepped slowly closer to me as if he thought I might run away. He stopped right in front of me, filling the space with his presence – his energy. He leaned down and I stopped breathing. He was so close I could smell the mint on his breath. He was a habitual gum chewer, especially when he was thinking. I half expected him to blow a bubble.Every wolf had their own scent, and no two wolves smelled the same. Mates sometimes had their smells combine over time, as if their souls were melding. I’d always thought it was beautiful.I’d learned the scents of my family over the last three months. Alexander smelled like books and sunshine; King Charles smelled like pastries and green tea, two of his all-time favorite treats, and Knox smelled like fresh rainfall. I couldn't help but notice that despite living in the palace, Adrian still smelled woodsy. He smelt of pine trees and freshly fallen snow. I felt my body sway towards his as if I was connected to him.

ChloeI'd spent all night tossing and turning, trying to figure out if I wanted Adrian to go with me to the healer. I wasn't sure what the healer was going to ask, and I thought his presence might make me too nervous to answer.Instead, I sent him a note via Nancy telling him that I wanted to go alone.Nancy offered to walk me down to the clinic, but I declined. It's not like I didn't know where to go. I'd gone there several times over the last couple of months for blood work. "I know where to go. Thank you, Nancy." I gave her a smile to soften my rejection." Of course, Your Highness."I could feel her eyes on me as I exited the room.As I walked, I tried to calm my racing heart. I was nervous- what if the Healer couldn't help me and my wolf lay dormant for the rest of my life? The thought left an ache in my chest that was almost unbearable. I had to get my wolf back - she was part of who I was and being without her felt wrong.I hesitated when I got to the Healer's office. I knew Ad

CadenI turned to Leah, anger eating me up inside. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” I growled, my wolf unable to hide its displeasure with her. As Alpha I should have a steady hold on my emotions, but as I watched Chloe walk away something snapped inside me.“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she huffed, not meeting my eyes. She knew exactly what she’d done, and the worst part was I know she wasn’t remorseful even though she had absolutely been in the wrong.“You know exactly what I am talking about. My conversation with Chloe had nothing to do with you, and you had no right to interrupt and speak the way you did. I can’t believe you.” I could, though. Leah had always been mean and spiteful, but as her father had been the Beta in the pack everyone had turned a blind eye to her behavior. Clearly, that had been a mistake, and we were all paying the price now.Leah stuck out her lip, obviously thinking that pouting was going to make me forgive her faster. News flash: it

AdrianAfter her initial appointment, Chloe started going to the Healer every other day. Somehow, I always happened to be in the hallway outside the Healer’s offices when Chloe left. It was getting to the point that I had to make up more extravagant excuses about why I was down there.“Adrian?”I turned to find Chloe just outside the Healer’s door, her arms crossed. I tried not to notice what that did to her breasts, but she was wearing a low-cut shirt, and I was just a man. Tearing my eyes away from the compelling sight, I met her gaze and gave her a small smile. It delighted me when she instantly softened.“Yes?” I finally managed to say, my throat dry.“Why are you outside the Healer’s quarters this time?” she asked, raising her eyebrows.I swallowed and cast around for something to tell her that wasn’t the pathetic truth. “I have a headache, and I wanted some painkillers.”Chloe nodded; her face carefully neutral. I had no idea if she believed me or not.Mate, my wolf whined, choo

Chloe“Shit, shit, shit,” I muttered to myself, desperately clinging on to the back of my horse. I’d taken lessons over the last few days, but I still wasn’t confident in my abilities.“Princess Harper!” Caden called behind me.“Double shit!” I turned my horse to the right and dug my heels into its side, urging the horse away. It took every bit of my newfound skill not to fall off. I’d fallen off several times over the last couple of days.“Don’t pull back so hard on the reigns!” Alexander called out on my first day of lessons.Of course, I pulled back harder on instinct and Jolie, my horse, reared up on her hind legs. I screamed and slid right off her back and onto my ass. Jolie righted herself and turned to me with a horsy frown. She snorted at me in indignation.“You’re doomed,” Knox howled with laughter from the other side of the arena.I stood carefully, making sure nothing was broken. I brushed off my ass and turned to my brothers, both of whom were still giggling.“I could have

KnoxChloe's look of surprise confused me. It took me a moment to realize I'd lifted my gun and was pointing it in her general direction. I had no memory of doing so, but my rifle was definitely pointed at her chest now.I knew that I never had any plans to actually shoot her, though. She annoyed me, but not enough to commit murder. Since her arrival in the palace, I’d tolerated her presence for my family’s sake, but I’d never gone out of my way to get to know her. I simply didn’t care. She was an interloper, an intruder who had infiltrated my family. My mind flashed back to the day Father told us about Chloe."Sons," Father said, clearing his throat at breakfast. He set down his fork, and I followed suit, turning to face the King. He looked nervous, which made me nervous. I couldn’t remember the last time something had unsettled Father and seeing him being so openly vulnerable concerned me. We weren’t a particularly touchy-feely family and kept our emotions in check.I glanced at my

Adrian"Dude!" Bryce said, waving his hand in front of my face."Huh?" I said, my attention diverted from the door I’d been staring at for the last hour. I had casually taken a position by the palace's front door, trying to catch Chloe when she returned from her date. I needed to make sure she hadn’t decided to return to Caden."You're pathetic," Bryce sighed, but his voice had a tinge of humor."I don't know what you're talking about," I sniffed. I refused to acknowledge the obvious; if Bryce was smart, he'd do the same.He wasn't. "You staring at the door isn't going to bring Chloe home any faster."I wanted to bite his head off, but he was right. "I know," I sighed. "I just have a bad feeling."I'd tried to shake off the sense of impending doom, but I couldn't. "Something's not right."Bryce raised an eyebrow. "Could it possibly be because Chloe is on a date with her ex-mate, who still doesn't know she's Harper?""He's got to be a bloody idiot not to realize Harper and Chloe are th

ChloeI relaxed and let my wolf take over just enough to calm me. Sinking into her felt like coming home. It only took a few more dunks before Lorenzo was bored with this form of torture. They left me in a heap on the floor, gasping for air.If I’d been healthy, I could have shifted into my wolf and ripped them to pieces. Unfortunately, I was too weak in my current state, and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to escape. My wolf was present enough to start healing some of my wounds. My fingertips still ached, but they also itched slightly. I could only assume that they were healing. I had no clue if I’d still have a fingerprint when they were done, but it was a step in the right direction.I coughed up more water, tinged with blood.I felt Lorenzo’s hard gaze on me. For a second, I thought he could sense my wolf healing my wounds, but he only scoffed. “I’m bored of this game. Kill her, Leah.”I turned to Leah with wide eyes. She couldn’t seriously be considering killing me, could she? I mean,

ChloeLeah didn’t stay with me for much longer, and she eventually picked herself up off the ground and went back to the main room, leaving me to my own thoughts.I dozed off at one point from sheer exhaustion and only remembered when I woke up that you aren’t supposed to sleep if you have a concussion. Whoops. I really needed to be seen by a Healer. I would never forgive Leah if I had permanent damage of some kind.Lorenzo was back. I heard him talking to Leah in a low voice. At the very least, he didn’t seem mad anymore, and as far as I could tell, he hadn’t hit Leah again. My stomach turned over at the memory of her injuries. I was beyond sickened by her mate, and I didn’t want him anywhere near me or her. Or anyone, if I was being honest. I wanted him as far away from me as possible.God, how I wished I could shift. I’d rip him apart limb by limb and enjoy every second of it. I wasn’t a bloodthirsty person, but I knew tearing Lorenzo apart would be different.“I want to play a gam

Chloe“You’ve ruined my life, Chloe. You are the bane of my existence, and even when I thought I was free of you, I wasn’t. How dare you steal everything from me.”I leaned back, pretending my heart wasn’t racing with fear. An angry wolf was a dangerous wolf. I wanted to make it out of this whole situation alive, and egging Leah on wasn’t going to help.“What about Lorenzo?” I asked, trying to distract her from her hatred of me. “How did you get involved with him?”“Mind your own business, bitch,” Leah growled. Her eyes flashed gold, her wolf trying to make an appearance. Being ripped apart didn’t seem too far away right now. Before I could think of anything else to say that might diffuse the situation, the door to the room opened, and someone entered.“Babe?” Lorenzo called out.Leah turned towards the sound, stepping out of the bathroom to see him. “Yea?”“I got you a burger.”It was interesting watching Leah. She was still bristling with anger, but Lorenzo’s offer seemed to have di

ChloeI woke up with a pounding headache. What the hell had happened to me?I opened my eyes and was instantly blinded by flickering fluorescent lights that hurt my head. After a moment of regrouping, I opened my eyes again, waiting for my vision to clear. It took me several seconds after I opened my eyes to process what I was seeing, and I blamed my head for that. I felt like there was cotton stuffed into my head where my brain should be.To my utter confusion, I was tied to a chair in a dirty bathroom. In fact, it looked like a seedy bathroom where someone did drugs. Why the hell was I here? How did I get here?I remembered going into the alley with Leah, but I wasn’t sure what had happened after that. I glanced around, looking for my stepsister. Had she been captured, too? Or had she gotten away? Was she, even now, sounding the alarm that I had been kidnapped?I was tempted to call out, but I wasn't sure that was the best idea. I probably didn't want to draw any extra attention my

LeahCaden surprised me with take out later that evening.“I thought you said not to expect you for dinner,” I said, taking the sandwich he offered me. Turkey on wheat; exactly what I liked. He shrugged and sat down at the small table in our room. “I felt bad. You were left alone all day, and you were injured, and I just… felt bad.”“I’m fine, Caden, really,” I sighed. “It’s just a little bruise. It’s going to be fine in a couple of days.”I could tell he didn’t believe me, but there was nothing he could do about it. He couldn't force the information out of me, and I sure as hell wasn't going to volunteer it."Did you put your name in to court, Princess Harper?" I asked, trying to keep my voice as level as possible for my plan to work. I needed Caden to keep me in the loop. My_ plan wouldn't work if I couldn't tell Lorenzo exactly where the Princess would be."I did," Caden admitted, his voice guarded, probably waiting for me to blow up at him again.Instead, I forced a smile onto my

LeahI left the motel early the next morning. I tried not to be disappointed, but Caden hadn’t even texted me to see where I was. I guessed after our argument he assumed I didn’t want to be bothered or that I would be back after he’d already gone to be. At least, I hoped he’d considered me in some capacity. When I got to the room, I realized I didn’t have my room key. “Fuck,” I hissed, searching my bag. It was gone. Where had I left it? Had I even grabbed it when I’d left yesterday? I’d been so upset; it was possible I’d just left it sitting on my nightstand.I knocked, praying that Caden was still in the room. He had a habit of sleeping in, so there was a chance he hadn’t gone downstairs to breakfast yet.The door swung open after a few seconds. “What the fuck happened to your face?” Caden asked when his eyes landed on me.I shrugged. “I fell.”“You fell?” Caden echoed, disbelief coloring his words.“Yep. I fell. Happens to the best of us.” I tried to push past Caden into our rooms,

LeahWe drove for thirty minutes before we pulled up in front of perhaps the seediest hotel I’d ever laid eyes on. I was pretty sure I’d seen a rat running down the hall as Peter parked.“This place is terrible,” I muttered.“Not all of us can live in fancy mansions, Leah,” Peter hissed.I was about to point out that I wasn’t a rogue, but that wasn’t exactly true anymore. My mate was a rogue, so what did that make me? Rogue adjacent?I followed Peter to the second floor, and he gestured toward room 213. I bit back a sigh and knocked once. Lorenzo didn’t like it when I knocked too much – he said it felt like I was trying to break down the door. After an unbearably long time out in the chill night air, the door finally swung open, and a shirtless Lorenzo gave me a possessive once over. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t do the same. No matter how Lorenzo hurt me, I was compelled to be with him. It was a sick and twisted relationship, and I hated the Moon Goddess for doing this to me.“You’

LeahCaden wasn’t playing by the rules, and I was getting increasingly irritated. Once Chloe was out of the picture, he was supposed to choose me. Why wasn’t he choosing me? I was pretty. I was smart. What the hell was his problem? My phone rang, and I picked it up on the third ring.“I’m sending a car to come pick you up,” my mate informed me from the other end of the line.“Have them pick me up out back,” I instructed. Caden had left to formally put his name in to date the princess, but he could be back at any time. I didn’t want him to see me leaving in a strange car.We hung up, and I grabbed a light jacket before heading downstairs. The alley behind the hotel was rather dirty, but I ignored the mess. I was used to it at this point.I’d found my mate at 18, by complete chance.“Dad, I’m going to go out for a run,” I called out just a few days after I turned 18 and shifted for the first time.“Are you going to stretch your legs?” he asked with a smile. Dad was always smiling for on
