Chapter 1

“The tumor in your brain is growing rapidly, and its location is quite problematic. The chances of a successful surgery are very low.

“If you don’t undergo surgery, you may have less than a year left.”

The doctor’s words echoed endlessly in her ears.

Layla Xander stumbled out of the hospital in a daze. By the time she got into a cab, the medical report in her hand was already crumpled from her grip.

Finally, it dawned on her. She needed to tell her fiancé, Sean Perry, about this.

Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she pulled out her phone and typed a message with great difficulty:

“Sean, come home early. I have something to tell you.”

Suddenly, a loud crash jolted the car, sending it shaking violently.

The impact threw her forward, her head hitting the seat in front of her. Pain shot through her skull, and her vision went black for a moment.

Chaotic noises erupted all around her.

Before she could process what was happening, the car door was yanked open, and a young man leaned in. “Miss, are you alright?”

“I’m fine.”

Layla instinctively waved him off, her mind focused solely on getting home as quickly as possible. She didn’t notice the sudden shift in the young man’s expression.

The next moment, the young man, Carter Lucas, grabbed her wrist firmly. “I’m taking you to the hospital right now!”

“There’s no need.”

Ignoring her refusal entirely, he scooped her up into his arms without hesitation and strode quickly toward the back door of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

“Uncle William, I’m taking her to the hospital!” he called out.

The car window lowered halfway, revealing a man’s cold, refined profile. Gold-rimmed glasses rested on his high nose bridge, and his sharp, almond-shaped eyes remained fixed on the tablet in his hands, engrossed in his work.

Even amidst the chaos, he exuded an air of calm control.

“Go ahead,” William Lucas said without looking up.

Only after receiving permission did Carter move forward, carrying Layla quickly.

She felt her head growing heavier and couldn’t stop herself from leaning into Carter’s chest.

When Layla opened her eyes again, she found herself lying on a hospital bed, her head throbbing dully.

There was no one else in the room.

Forcing herself to sit up, she took a moment to steady her breathing. Then she remembered that she had asked Sean to come home.

He hated it when people were late.

Her chest tightened with anxiety. Ignoring the dizziness that threatened to overwhelm her, she got out of bed and hurriedly left the hospital room.

The emergency room lobby was bustling with people. Supporting herself against the wall, Layla slowly made her way forward. Out of the corner of her eye, she suddenly caught sight of a familiar figure in the crowd.

It was Sean!

He was holding Xena Xander in his arms, his steps hurried. Before Layla could react, they disappeared into the crowd.

She froze in place, unsure how much time had passed before her phone buzzed in her pocket.

She pulled out her phone and saw Sean’s reply:

“I won’t be coming home today. We’ll talk about your matter tomorrow.”

How painfully familiar this scene was.

It wasn’t the first time Sean had put someone else ahead of her.

In Sean’s world, everyone and everything was more important than her, his fiancée. She just never imagined that one day, her younger sister, Xena, would take priority over her too.

Why?

Layla’s heart ached as if it were being torn apart. Why did it have to be Xena?

As if driven by some unseen force, she dialed Sean’s number. It rang for a long time before he finally picked up.

His tone was impatient. “Didn’t I already tell you I’m not coming home?”

“Where are you right now?” Layla asked, her voice hoarse, trying to suppress the urge to cry.

“Where else would I be?” Sean responded defensively, then added, “I’m at the office, really busy.”

Clutching her phone tightly, Layla’s bitter smile deepened. Great—he was still lying to her.

Perhaps sensing that something was off, Sean’s tone softened. “Layla, just stay home and wait for me. I’ll come back to you as soon as I finish work.”

“Ah, ouch…” A delicate, flirtatious voice interrupted in the background.

Layla heard it loud and clear, but she pretended not to notice. She lowered her voice and replied, “Okay, I’ll wait for you.”

The call ended abruptly. Sean didn’t even have time to say goodbye. He was too busy worrying about Xena.

Lowering her phone, Layla felt her heart, which had been aching moments ago, go completely numb. It was as if it had stopped beating, leaving an emptiness that swallowed her whole.

Sean had forgotten.

This afternoon, they were supposed to pick up their engagement outfits together.

Back at the villa, Layla locked herself in the bridal bedroom and fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.

In her dreams, her twenty-six years of life flashed by like scenes from a film.

She was switched at birth.

At twelve, her adoptive father’s gambling habits left him drowning in debt, and her adoptive mother tried to use her as a bargaining chip to extort money.

In the end, they both ended up in prison.

She returned to the Xander family, but the fake daughter, Xena, who had been raised in the Xander family, could no longer return to her original family.

At first, the Xander family tried everything to make it up to Layla. Those were the happiest days of her life.

But over time, things began to change.

The unfamiliarity of blood ties couldn’t compete with the deep bond the Xanders had formed with Xena after living together for so many years.

She became the outsider in the Xander family, always out of place. The familial love she longed for was something Xena flaunted in front of her like a trophy.

Then Sean appeared. He was a ray of sunlight piercing through the darkness of her life.

People mocked her, calling her desperate and pathetic, but they didn’t know she saw Sean as her lifeline.

She had always believed Sean cared about her. Why else would he have stayed with her all the way to their engagement?

Their engagement banquet was just a week away.

“Marry me, and I’ll take care of you for the rest of your life.”

“I will.”

But in the hazy light of her dream, Layla was stunned to see the bride-to-be on stage suddenly transform into Xena.

Frozen in place, she could only watch helplessly as Sean slid the engagement ring onto Xena’s finger.

Layla jolted awake, drenched in cold sweat.

The morning sunlight was already streaming through the window. The room was empty as always, just her alone.

Sean hadn’t come home last night.

Layla didn’t want to dwell on whether he had spent the night with Xena.

The vivid dream left her with a pounding headache, as if reminding her of her limited time and urging her not to waste it on others.

When she got out of bed to wash up, she noticed a large blood-stained bandage on her forehead.

It turned out her injuries from the car accident yesterday were more serious than she had realized.

She rummaged through the medical kit and changed the dressing herself, wincing in pain. Gritting her teeth, she thought bitterly, “Even when you’re about to die, you can’t handle a little pain?”

After she finished, Layla looked at her reflection in the mirror.

Her face was pale, her eyes dull and lifeless. Overnight, she looked far more haggard than before.

“I’ve lived all these years and still haven’t figured out how to truly live,” she muttered.

She found herself laughing at how absurd it all was. Such a short life, and she had spent it living for others.

Her mind, once clouded and chaotic, suddenly became clear.

She took a long shower, then headed downstairs. Mrs. Lincoln, the housekeeper, was already busy in the kitchen.

“Miss Xander, once I’m done tidying up, let me know if there’s anything else we need from the supermarket,” Mrs. Lincoln said, her voice warm.

“That won’t be necessary,” Layla replied. “Just make me some soup.”

Mrs. Lincoln paused, peeking her head out of the kitchen to look at Layla. “Is Mr. Perry not coming back for a meal?”

“I don’t know.”

Layla sat at the dining table, phone in hand, typing out a message. Her fingers hesitated briefly. “He probably will.”

“Not that it matters. He likely won’t be able to stomach a bite anyway,” she thought to herself.

With that thought, she sent the message she had been drafting in the group chat:

“I’m breaking off my engagement with Sean Perry.”

Mrs. Lincoln didn’t know what she was doing, but she couldn’t help finding Layla’s behavior odd.

For years, Layla had been the one cooking for Sean, spoiling him with meals tailored to his taste. He had grown so picky that only her cooking satisfied him. Even when she was sick, she would drag herself into the kitchen, terrified he might go hungry.

But today, it was as if she had become a completely different person.

An hour later, Sean stormed in, his voice sharp and accusatory. “Layla, what nonsense are you pulling now?” His gaze quickly landed on her head, and he froze for a moment. “You’re hurt?” “Yeah.” Layla looked at Sean, her expression calm and detached. “I was in a rear-end collision yesterday and ended up in the hospital.” Guilt flickered in Sean’s eyes for a brief second before he quickly sat down beside her. “Was it serious? Is that what you wanted to talk to me about yesterday?” “Just a minor injury.” Without a word, Layla shifted slightly away from him and spoke slowly. “I’m serious about breaking off the engagement. And about the company shares—I want my portion back.” Outsiders might not know, but Sean was well aware. The Perry family had never thought much of him, a mere illegitimate child. His entrepreneurial success over the years was largely thanks to Layla’s initial funding and behind-the-scenes support. To help him project the image of a capable and

The engagement banquet went ahead as planned. Since Mr. Perry Sr. was particularly fond of Layla, the event was lavishly organized, with many prominent families and close friends in attendance. The banquet hall was brimming with glittering jewels, cheerful laughter, and a vibrant atmosphere. Sean stood at the entrance, greeting guests with a polite smile, though his heart was restless with worry. Time was ticking, and Layla still hadn’t arrived. Mr. Perry Sr. approached with a stern expression. “Did you get into another fight with Layla?” Sean quickly denied it. “No, Grandpa, don’t jump to conclusions.” “It better be true,” Mr. Perry Sr. snapped, shooting him a glare. “Layla is the granddaughter-in-law I’ve chosen. If anything goes wrong with today’s engagement banquet, you might as well not come back to the Perry family!” “Don’t worry, there won’t be any problems.” As they were speaking, Mr. Perry Sr. suddenly lit up with a smile. “Layla!” Sean followed h

“I can’t believe it! She’s actually the bride-to-be at this engagement banquet!” Carter stared at the stage in disbelief, his eyes shining with excitement. “She’s incredible! The Perry family threw this grand event, and she just destroyed it like it was nothing!“Uncle William, we really came to the right event today!” Lost in his excitement, Carter didn’t notice that William’s gaze was fixed intently on Layla. Beneath the shadows of the lights, an unreadable depth stirred in his dark eyes, emotions surging quietly but intensely. On stage, Sean strode quickly toward Layla, an awkward smile plastered across his face. He forcefully pulled her into his arm. “Apologies, everyone. Layla was just joking around, trying to liven up the atmosphere,” he said with a strained grin. “Isn’t that right, Layla?” The words were practically forced through his teeth, dripping with menace. Layla remained expressionless as her voice rang out, loud and firm. “I’m not joking.” The cr

As soon as Layla stepped out, Carter dashed over, excitement written all over his face. He stopped in front of her and blurted, “Wow, you’re way too bold! With all those people in there, you didn’t spare a shred of dignity for the Perry or Xander families!”He added, grinning, “Honestly, you should’ve slapped those two cheaters right across their faces!” “And who are you?” Layla asked, a little speechless at how overly familiar this gossip-loving young man was. “I’m… uh…” Carter scratched his head awkwardly. “I was the one driving the car that rear-ended your taxi a week ago.” “Oh…” Layla responded lazily, clearly not interested in pursuing the matter. “You—” “Carter,” William called out.Hearing the warning tone in William’s voice, Carter immediately shut up, though his eyes still sparkled with admiration as he looked at Layla. Having grown up surrounded by the fake politeness and scheming of the upper class, Carter found Layla’s fearless attitude fascinating. And

“Just doing the right thing,” Carter chimed in from the driver’s seat, casually inserting himself into the conversation. “I recognized you the moment I saw you. Uncle William heard me out and decided to help. That’s just how he is—he can’t stand owing anyone.“Am I right, Uncle William?” Carter asked.William remained silent. Taking his uncle’s silence as confirmation, Carter raised an eyebrow smugly. “They say blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. I’ve seen it firsthand today. Sis, you might’ve been rear-ended by us, but I’d say your good fortune is just getting started!” “And now you’re acting like it’s a good thing you drive recklessly?” William’s deep voice cut in, sharp and disapproving. Carter chuckled sheepishly. “I was just trying to cheer her up. After everything she’s been through, her mood must be awful, right?” “I’m fine,” Layla said with a faint smile. “And you’re not wrong.” Blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. “Xena is your sister, and I’m her future brother-in-law. Is it wrong for me to take care of her?” Sean’s gaze moved past Layla, landing on William. “And what about you and Mr. Lucas? What’s your relationship? Why is he helping you?” Following Sean’s line of sight, Layla saw William approaching. Dressed sharply in a tailored suit, he walked with an aura so commanding it felt as though the world bowed at his feet under the golden sunlight. Sean’s question seemed aimed at both of them. Ignoring Sean’s hostility, William strode directly to Layla’s side. “Miss Xander, is there anything I can help you with?” Layla snapped out of her thoughts. “Mr. Lucas, why are you…” “After the accident, I’ve been thinking about your injury. I won’t feel at ease until I know you’ve fully recovered,” William said, handing her a bag of breakfast. “Carter asked me to bring this to you.” Accident? Sean’s expression shifted as he recalled Layla mentioning the rear-end collision when she firs

In just one week, Layla had received all kinds of deliveries, and without exception, every single one ended up in the trash. Today’s delivery was right on schedule: a large bouquet of vibrant yellow roses in full bloom. The delivery guy struggled to carry it to her door, sweating profusely. “Hi, your delivery is here.” Before he could finish, the door opened. Layla glanced briefly at the card’s signature. “Could you please throw it in the trash downstairs?” “What?” The delivery guy was stunned. “But these flowers are beautiful.” “They take up too much space.” Layla smiled politely before closing the door. She used to treasure the two bouquets she would receive every year—one for her birthday and one for her anniversary. She would carefully dry them and save them as keepsakes. But now, with flowers arriving daily, even a single glance made her feel like she was about to develop a pollen allergy. If nothing else, this ordeal had taught her something new. Sean a

After some thought, Sean concluded that his repeated attempts to appease Layla had only emboldened her. “Women shouldn’t be spoiled,” he told himself. For an entire week, Sean ignored Layla completely. That day, the company held a shareholder meeting. Sean sat confidently at the head of the table, listening as employees presented the third-quarter performance reports.Suddenly, the conference room doors burst open. Layla entered first, followed by a group of reporters with cameras in tow. Sean shot to his feet. “Layla, what the hell are you doing!” “Nothing much,” Layla replied with a lazy smile. “I just thought the shareholders deserved to know the truth. Oh, and leaking it to the press earns me a little extra cash. The money you offered me isn’t even enough for pocket change.” Sean’s face contorted with rage. “You’ve lost your mind!” “Sure, I’m crazy,” Layla sneered. “You drove me to it.” She turned to the bewildered shareholders. “I have some documents I’

“Mr. and Mrs. Watson have a great relationship. Word is, they’ve been together since their college days, and Mr. Watson is known to be a doting husband who listens to his wife,” Layla replied.Layla had looked into Mr. Watson when she sought to collaborate with him, tailoring her approach to his personality. Seeing the couple together in person today stirred an unexpected wave of envy in her. She had once been obsessed with the idea of finding a pure and genuine love like theirs. She had loved Sean for so many years, believing they would become a couple others admired. But in the end, it was all a joke, one that anyone could laugh at her expense. She must have been born under an unlucky star. All these years, she had experienced neither sweet love nor the warmth of family. To leave the world like this felt like a bitter regret. Noticing the hint of sorrow in her eyes, William said softly, “You could try living a little longer. Who knows? You might find the right person.”

Understanding the unspoken message, Mr. Lawrence thumped his chest in assurance. “I’ll make sure she disappears.” The model froze, stunned. Just last night, this man had been glued to her side, promising to marry her. Now, in an instant, he had abandoned her completely? Watching the color drain from the model’s face, Layla felt no satisfaction, only indifference. “Let’s go.” She turned and walked away, with William following close behind. The commotion ended, leaving the model standing amidst judgmental stares. Her mind reeled. When had Layla become like this? In her memory, Layla had always carried herself with the poise of a lady from the Xander family—composed, restrained, and never stepping out of line. Even if someone criticized her to her face, sh

I’d love to land a rich man like you.” The others exchanged awkward glances, unsure of the situation and too nervous to speak up. Amid the uneasy silence, Layla slowly glanced at the model, her expression calm and measured. “With just you?” The model froze for a moment before springing to her feet. “What about me? Events that someone like William attended were usually gatherings for high-profile deals, often involving some level of business confidentiality. Layla knew her role well. As a simple date, she was merely there to add a decorative touch, like an ornament. William noticed her composed demeanor and didn’t offer further explanation. His gaze flicked briefly to her hand resting on his arm. “Let’s go.” Together, they stepped into the venue, instantly drawing the attention of nearly every guest. A middle-aged man quickly approached them, beaming with excitement. “Mr. Lucas! Well, this is a rare sight! You actually brought a date with you today!” As he spoke, his eyes swept over Layla, nodding repeatedly in approval. “Not bad, not bad at all. Someone as stunning as her is exactly what one would expect for Mr. Lucas’s companion!” Hearing such direct praise, Layla couldn’t help but feel a bit flustered. “You flatter me,” she replied politely. “He’s just telling the truth

It was a large transfer notification. Layla squinted, carefully counting the digits in the amount. Not only did it cover her startup capital, but it also included funds from the sale of her shares, far exceeding what she had expected. With this sum, she could now consider herself quite wealthy. William glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. “What’s making you so happy?” Layla put her phone away. Compared to him, this was nothing but a drop in the ocean, so she chose not to brag. “Nothing much. I just got what I wanted,” she said casually. “Sean transferred the money to you?” William asked. “Yep.” Layla held up her phone. “Tonight, dinner’s on me.” “No need. Tonight, I’m taking you to a cocktail party,” William replied. At first, Layla thought this was his polite way of declining, but then he added, “There’s a charity auction tomorrow evening. Once it’s over, we can go for dinner.” Realizing he wasn’t dismissing her offer, Layla nodded. “That wo

Mrs. Xander hesitated, then let out a heavy sigh. “If Layla really dared to joke about something like this, I would never forgive her for the rest of my life.” Sean fell silent. If this whole situation was orchestrated with Mr. Perry Sr.’s help, then Layla’s position in his heart must be far too important. If Sean were to marry her, wouldn’t he be overshadowed by Layla forever, with Mr. Perry Sr. constantly supporting her and keeping him in check? The more he thought about it, the heavier Sean’s heart grew. …Inside the villa, William stood outside Layla’s bedroom door, hesitating to knock. He wanted to comfort her but couldn’t find the right words, afraid he would only make things worse. The mighty head of the Lucas family, undefeated in the business world, was at a complete loss when it came to consoling a woman. Just as he was caught in indecision, the door suddenly opened. Shane was the first to react, frowning as he questioned, “Sean, what are you talking about? Layla’s perfectly fine. She rushed forward, grabbing Sean’s arm, and asked anxiously, “Tell me—what’s wrong with Layla?” “She has a tumor in her brain,” Sean said grimly. “It’s in a dangerous spot, and the chances of a successful surgery are very slim.” His words hit the Xander family like a bolt of lightning. They stood frozen, their faces full of disbelief. Mrs. Xander thought back to the cruel words she had said earlier. Guilt and heartbreak overwhelmed her, and tears streamed down her face. “How… how could I say something so horrible to her?” she muttered, her voice breaking. Overcome with regret,

A sharp glint appeared in William’s eyes. “Are you planning to take her from me by force? You’d better think carefully about whether the Xander family has what it takes to challenge me.” Hearing the threat in his words, Mr. Xander’s heart sank. Layla refused to leave, and William wouldn’t let her go—this was a deadlock. “Layla…” Tears welled up in Xena’s eyes as she knelt on the ground. “I know I was wrong. Please forgive me. Please don’t be mad at Mom and Dad anymore, okay?” Shane immediately stepped forward to pull her up. “What are you doing? Get up!” “Xena, stop begging her,” Mrs. Xander said, her voice thick with disappointment as she turned to Layla. “If I had known back then that this is the kind of daughter I’d give birth to after fighting to keep the pregnancy, I should’ve let her die.” Those words were like a knife stabbing into Layla’s heart. Even though she had mentally prepared herself for this fallout, the pain was still suffocating. Nothing was more
