Chapter 4

Author: Eli Sole
“I can’t believe it! She’s actually the bride-to-be at this engagement banquet!”

Carter stared at the stage in disbelief, his eyes shining with excitement. “She’s incredible! The Perry family threw this grand event, and she just destroyed it like it was nothing!

“Uncle William, we really came to the right event today!”

Lost in his excitement, Carter didn’t notice that William’s gaze was fixed intently on Layla. Beneath the shadows of the lights, an unreadable depth stirred in his dark eyes, emotions surging quietly but intensely.

On stage, Sean strode quickly toward Layla, an awkward smile plastered across his face. He forcefully pulled her into his arm.

“Apologies, everyone. Layla was just joking around, trying to liven up the atmosphere,” he said with a strained grin.

“Isn’t that right, Layla?”

The words were practically forced through his teeth, dripping with menace.

Layla remained expressionless as her voice rang out, loud and firm. “I’m not joking.”

The crowd below the stage broke into another wave of gasps and murmurs.

Sean’s smile disappeared, his expression darkening as he hissed under his breath. “What are you trying to pull, Layla? Do you have to humiliate both families to feel satisfied?”

“I told you I wanted to call off the engagement, but none of you cared. None of you believed me,” Layla replied, her voice cold and devoid of emotion.

Turning to meet Sean’s furious gaze, she continued, “The reason both families are embarrassed today is because you insisted on holding this engagement banquet despite my objections.”

At that moment, the Xander family hurried onto the stage, arriving just in time to catch Layla’s last words.

Mrs. Xander grabbed her arm in a panic. “Are you out of your mind? Even if you’re upset, there has to be a limit! Now, hurry up and explain to everyone that this was all a misunderstanding!”

“I’ve already explained myself.” Layla’s patience was wearing thin.

“Do these people not understand plain English?” she wondered.

“How many times do I have to say I’m calling off the engagement before you actually believe me?” she added.

“Do you think marriage is some kind of game?” Mr. Xander snapped. “You were the one who wanted to marry Sean Perry, and now that you’ve gotten what you wanted, you want to call it off? How old are you, Layla? How can you be this immature?”

Ignoring her protests, Mr. Xander seized her head and forced her into a bow, making her apologize to the guests.

“We’re so sorry,” he said loudly. “We’ve indulged her too much, and now she’s throwing a tantrum. Please forgive us for this embarrassment. The engagement banquet will go on—please, enjoy the food and drinks.”

To everyone’s surprise, Layla did something completely out of character. She fought back with all her strength, breaking free from his grip.

“I said—”

*Smack!*

A sharp slap landed on Layla’s face, cutting off her words.

Mr. Xander’s face was twisted with rage. “Stop embarrassing yourself!”

Layla felt her heart sink into an abyss. She glanced around at the faces of those surrounding her, her bitter smile growing deeper. She looked as fragile as a dried leaf, trembling in the wind, ready to fall at any moment.

Sean stood nearby, watching coldly, waiting for her to regret everything.

“You push someone to the edge, forcing them to break down, and then turn around and accuse her of being unreasonable. Tell me, is there even enough room for all of you on that so-called moral high ground of yours?”

A cold, commanding voice echoed through the hall.

Under the stunned gazes of the crowd, William strode toward the stage. His powerful aura made the guests instinctively part, creating a clear path for him.

The room fell silent. No one had expected this drama to draw William himself into the spotlight!

Sean was the first to recover. He hurried to intercept him. “Mr. Lucas, I’m sorry you had to see this. This is just…”

A sharp, icy glare stopped Sean in his tracks.

He froze, clearly feeling the raw and unrelenting hostility radiating from William. Instinctively, he shut his mouth, watching helplessly as William approached Layla and subtly shielded her from the room’s prying eyes.

“Miss Xander made herself perfectly clear,” William said in a cold, authoritative tone. “She wants to end the engagement.”

His gaze swept the room as he asked, “What part of that don’t you understand?”

“We… uh…” Mr. Xander stammered, unable to form a coherent response.

After all, this was William Lucas, the most feared and influential man in the Lucas family. If they angered him, the Xander family might not survive the night.

“If there’s no disagreement, then it will be handled as Miss Xander has requested,” William declared. Turning to the gathered guests, his voice rang out, “From this moment on, the engagement between the Xander and Perry families is canceled.”

“Mr. Lucas, this is a private family matter. Don’t you think you’re overstepping your bounds?” Sean said, his expression dark as his gaze shifted past William and landed on Layla.

Forcing out the last bit of his patience, he added, “Layla, stop this nonsense, please?”

“Sis, it’s all my fault,” Xena chimed in weakly, her timing impeccable as always. “If you’re angry, take it out on me, but don’t ruin the reputation of both families.”

Layla glanced at Xena and replied nonchalantly, “You’re right. This is all your fault—seducing your sister’s fiancé and knowingly being the other woman.”

The room collectively gasped, shocked by her blunt words.

Before the banquet even officially began, the guests had already been served the juiciest scandal of the night.

Xena stood frozen, utterly unprepared for Layla to break the unspoken rules and call her out so directly. The crowd stared at her, leaving her embarrassed and unsure of what to do.

Layla’s tolerance in the past had always been predictable. No matter how bad things got, she swallowed her pride to maintain the family’s reputation. But today, she was like a completely different person.

“Layla Xander!” Sean growled, his face twisted in anger. “What nonsense are you spouting? Xena is your sister! How could you slander her like this?”

Watching Sean’s sudden outrage, Layla couldn’t help but feel bitterly amused.

Just moments ago, her fiancé had done nothing when she was slapped across the face, yet now he was rushing to defend her younger sister.

It was painfully obvious where his heart truly lay.

Suddenly, it all felt completely meaningless to her.

She had spent six long years deeply in love with this man, the one who once promised he would never let her suffer even the slightest grievance.

And yet, here they were. His promises had proven to be nothing more than empty words—worthless as the wind.

Perhaps sensing Layla’s emotions, William slipped off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders. In a low voice, he said, “I’ll take you away.”

Layla nodded. She had done everything she intended to do. There was no reason to stay any longer.

The ones who had embarrassed themselves were them, not her.

With her high heels clicking against the floor, Layla walked gracefully off the stage, her dress swaying gently and accentuating her air of cold elegance.

“Layla!” Sean called out urgently, about to follow her, but William raised an arm, blocking his path.

“You can’t even protect your own woman. You’re nothing but a failure,” William said in a low, dangerous voice, each word laced with unspoken menace. “You have no right to stop her.”

Sean froze, staring in shock as William followed Layla. His fists clenched tightly at his sides, veins bulging on the backs of his hands.

Seeing this, Mr. Xander panicked. If she left and the engagement was truly called off, the business ties between the two families would be completely severed.

In desperation, he tried to assert his authority, shouting angrily at her retreating figure, “If you dare step out of this door, don’t bother coming back to the Xander family!”

But Layla didn’t hesitate for even a moment.

“Fine,” she replied without turning back. “Just pretend I never came home at twelve years old.”

With that, she stepped through the door, feeling lighter than she ever had before.

As she disappeared, the atmosphere in the hall grew unbearably tense.

The crowd’s faces were grim, and Mr. Xander was livid, his chest heaving with rage.

He turned to Mrs. Xander, unleashing his frustration. “This is the daughter you raised? She’s walked out on her own family! Let’s see how long she thinks she can keep this up!

“And when the time comes, I’ll make her crawl back to this house on her knees!”

As soon as Layla stepped out, Carter dashed over, excitement written all over his face. He stopped in front of her and blurted, “Wow, you’re way too bold! With all those people in there, you didn’t spare a shred of dignity for the Perry or Xander families!”He added, grinning, “Honestly, you should’ve slapped those two cheaters right across their faces!” “And who are you?” Layla asked, a little speechless at how overly familiar this gossip-loving young man was. “I’m… uh…” Carter scratched his head awkwardly. “I was the one driving the car that rear-ended your taxi a week ago.” “Oh…” Layla responded lazily, clearly not interested in pursuing the matter. “You—” “Carter,” William called out.Hearing the warning tone in William’s voice, Carter immediately shut up, though his eyes still sparkled with admiration as he looked at Layla. Having grown up surrounded by the fake politeness and scheming of the upper class, Carter found Layla’s fearless attitude fascinating. And

Uncle William heard me out and decided to help. That’s just how he is—he can’t stand owing anyone.“Am I right, Uncle William?” Carter asked.William remained silent. Taking his uncle’s silence as confirmation, Carter raised an eyebrow smugly. “They say blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. I’ve seen it firsthand today. Sis, you might’ve been rear-ended by us, but I’d say your good fortune is just getting started!” “And now you’re acting like it’s a good thing you drive recklessly?” William’s deep voice cut in, sharp and disapproving. Carter chuckled sheepishly. “I was just trying to cheer her up. After everything she’s been through, her mood must be awful, right?” “I’m fine,” Layla said with a faint smile. “And you’re not wrong.” Blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. “Xena is your sister, and I’m her future brother-in-law. Is it wrong for me to take care of her?” Sean’s gaze moved past Layla, landing on William. “And what about you and Mr. Lucas? What’s your relationship? Why is he helping you?” Following Sean’s line of sight, Layla saw William approaching. Dressed sharply in a tailored suit, he walked with an aura so commanding it felt as though the world bowed at his feet under the golden sunlight. Sean’s question seemed aimed at both of them. Ignoring Sean’s hostility, William strode directly to Layla’s side. “Miss Xander, is there anything I can help you with?” Layla snapped out of her thoughts. “Mr. Lucas, why are you…” “After the accident, I’ve been thinking about your injury. I won’t feel at ease until I know you’ve fully recovered,” William said, handing her a bag of breakfast. “Carter asked me to bring this to you.” Accident? In just one week, Layla had received all kinds of deliveries, and without exception, every single one ended up in the trash. Today’s delivery was right on schedule: a large bouquet of vibrant yellow roses in full bloom. The delivery guy struggled to carry it to her door, sweating profusely. “Hi, your delivery is here.” Before he could finish, the door opened. Layla glanced briefly at the card’s signature. “Could you please throw it in the trash downstairs?” “What?” The delivery guy was stunned. “But these flowers are beautiful.” “They take up too much space.” Layla smiled politely before closing the door. She used to treasure the two bouquets she would receive every year—one for her birthday and one for her anniversary. She would carefully dry them and save them as keepsakes. But now, with flowers arriving daily, even a single glance made her feel like she was about to develop a pollen allergy. If nothing else, this ordeal had taught her something new. Sean a

After some thought, Sean concluded that his repeated attempts to appease Layla had only emboldened her. “Women shouldn’t be spoiled,” he told himself. For an entire week, Sean ignored Layla completely. That day, the company held a shareholder meeting. Sean sat confidently at the head of the table, listening as employees presented the third-quarter performance reports.Suddenly, the conference room doors burst open. Layla entered first, followed by a group of reporters with cameras in tow. Sean shot to his feet. “Layla, what the hell are you doing!” “Nothing much,” Layla replied with a lazy smile. “I just thought the shareholders deserved to know the truth. Oh, and leaking it to the press earns me a little extra cash. The money you offered me isn’t even enough for pocket change.” Sean’s face contorted with rage. “You’ve lost your mind!” “Sure, I’m crazy,” Layla sneered. “You drove me to it.” She turned to the bewildered shareholders. “I have some documents I’

“Of course,” William replied. “Then… can I move into your place?” Layla asked tentatively. William: “?” Even Mike, the usually stoic bodyguard trailing behind William, couldn’t hide the flicker of surprise on his face. He shot Layla a glance, clearly amazed at her audacity. This was William Lucas she was addressing—someone who valued peace and quiet so much that even his household staff had to avoid him during his hours at home. “Yes, you can.”Hearing William's response, Mike’s expression faltered completely. He stared at William in disbelief. “Did those words really just come out of Mr. Lucas’s mouth?” he questioned himself.“You don’t need to worry. I won’t stay for free,” Layla quickly offered. She pulled out her phone, tapped the screen a few times, and held it up for him. “Add my contact info. You can name your price, and I’ll treat it like I’m renting a room. I promise to keep a low profile. You can pretend I’m not even there if you like.” “That won’t be ne

When Sean escorted Xena back to the Xander residence, the family immediately swarmed around them with questions. “Sean, is everything they’re saying online true?” “What’s going on with your company? Are you really giving Layla her shares?” “Enough!” Xena interrupted, frustration evident in her voice. “Sean’s already dealing with enough. Stop adding to the stress.” It was only then that Mrs. Xander noticed Xena clutching her arm. “What happened to your arm?” “It’s nothing, just a little bruise,” Xena replied awkwardly, trying to hide it. But Sean grabbed her arm gently and pulled it closer, rolling up her sleeve to reveal a sizable bruise on her fair skin. His brows furrowed. “I’m taking you to the hospital.” “It’s fine,” Xena reassured him with a faint smile. “As long as the injury didn’t land on you, I’m happy.” Sean’s grip tightened as guilt flickered in his eyes, his focus remaining on her arm. “What happened?” Mr. Xander asked, his tone sharp. “It’s

The next morning, Layla finally noticed the buzz online. Lost in thought, she didn’t realize her other hand was still holding the kettle, pouring water until a firm hand gripped her wrist. Startled, she looked up to meet William's calm, steady gaze.“What’s got you so distracted?” he asked. Snapping out of it, Layla quickly pulled her hand back and placed the kettle on the counter. “I was just checking my phone…” she said, hesitating for a moment before turning the screen toward him. “I went out with Carter yesterday and didn’t expect someone to take pictures. It seems like it’s causing a lot of trouble for him. Should I talk to him and help clear things up?”Layla wasn’t familiar with entertainment news and had no idea Carter was preparing to debut as a celebrity. If she had known, she would have been more cautious.“No need,” William replied just as his phone buzzed with a call from Carter. As soon as he answered, Carter’s anxious voice came through. “Uncle William, is Layl

Word is, they’ve been together since their college days, and Mr. Watson is known to be a doting husband who listens to his wife,” Layla replied.Layla had looked into Mr. Watson when she sought to collaborate with him, tailoring her approach to his personality. Seeing the couple together in person today stirred an unexpected wave of envy in her. She had once been obsessed with the idea of finding a pure and genuine love like theirs. She had loved Sean for so many years, believing they would become a couple others admired. But in the end, it was all a joke, one that anyone could laugh at her expense. She must have been born under an unlucky star. All these years, she had experienced neither sweet love nor the warmth of family. To leave the world like this felt like a bitter regret. Noticing the hint of sorrow in her eyes, William said softly, “You could try living a little longer. Who knows? You might find the right person.”

Mr. Lawrence quickly picked up the jacket. “I... Understanding the unspoken message, Mr. Lawrence thumped his chest in assurance. “I’ll make sure she disappears.” The model froze, stunned. Just last night, this man had been glued to her side, promising to marry her. Now, in an instant, he had abandoned her completely? Watching the color drain from the model’s face, Layla felt no satisfaction, only indifference. “Let’s go.” She turned and walked away, with William following close behind. The commotion ended, leaving the model standing amidst judgmental stares. Her mind reeled. When had Layla become like this? In her memory, Layla had always carried herself with the poise of a lady from the Xander family—composed, restrained, and never stepping out of line. Even if someone criticized her to her face, sh

Amid the uneasy silence, Layla slowly glanced at the model, her expression calm and measured. “With just you?” The model froze for a moment before springing to her feet. “What about me? Events that someone like William attended were usually gatherings for high-profile deals, often involving some level of business confidentiality. Layla knew her role well. As a simple date, she was merely there to add a decorative touch, like an ornament. William noticed her composed demeanor and didn’t offer further explanation. His gaze flicked briefly to her hand resting on his arm. “Let’s go.” Together, they stepped into the venue, instantly drawing the attention of nearly every guest. A middle-aged man quickly approached them, beaming with excitement. “Mr. Lucas! Well, this is a rare sight! You actually brought a date with you today!” As he spoke, his eyes swept over Layla, nodding repeatedly in approval. “Not bad, not bad at all. Someone as stunning as her is exactly what one would expect for Mr. Lucas’s companion!” Hearing such direct praise, Layla couldn’t help but feel a bit flustered. “You flatter me,” she replied politely. “He’s just telling the truth

It was a large transfer notification. Layla squinted, carefully counting the digits in the amount. Not only did it cover her startup capital, but it also included funds from the sale of her shares, far exceeding what she had expected. With this sum, she could now consider herself quite wealthy. William glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. “What’s making you so happy?” Layla put her phone away. Compared to him, this was nothing but a drop in the ocean, so she chose not to brag. “Nothing much. I just got what I wanted,” she said casually. “Sean transferred the money to you?” William asked. “Yep.” Layla held up her phone. “Tonight, dinner’s on me.” “No need. Tonight, I’m taking you to a cocktail party,” William replied. At first, Layla thought this was his polite way of declining, but then he added, “There’s a charity auction tomorrow evening. Once it’s over, we can go for dinner.” Realizing he wasn’t dismissing her offer, Layla nodded. “That wo

Mrs. Xander hesitated, then let out a heavy sigh. “If Layla really dared to joke about something like this, I would never forgive her for the rest of my life.” Sean fell silent. If this whole situation was orchestrated with Mr. Perry Sr.’s help, then Layla’s position in his heart must be far too important. If Sean were to marry her, wouldn’t he be overshadowed by Layla forever, with Mr. Perry Sr. constantly supporting her and keeping him in check? The more he thought about it, the heavier Sean’s heart grew. …Inside the villa, William stood outside Layla’s bedroom door, hesitating to knock. He wanted to comfort her but couldn’t find the right words, afraid he would only make things worse. Shane was the first to react, frowning as he questioned, “Sean, what are you talking about? Layla’s perfectly fine. She rushed forward, grabbing Sean’s arm, and asked anxiously, “Tell me—what’s wrong with Layla?” “She has a tumor in her brain,” Sean said grimly. “It’s in a dangerous spot, and the chances of a successful surgery are very slim.” His words hit the Xander family like a bolt of lightning. They stood frozen, their faces full of disbelief. Mrs. Xander thought back to the cruel words she had said earlier. Guilt and heartbreak overwhelmed her, and tears streamed down her face. “How… how could I say something so horrible to her?” she muttered, her voice breaking. Overcome with regret,

A sharp glint appeared in William’s eyes. “Are you planning to take her from me by force? You’d better think carefully about whether the Xander family has what it takes to challenge me.” Hearing the threat in his words, Mr. Xander’s heart sank. Layla refused to leave, and William wouldn’t let her go—this was a deadlock. “Layla…” Tears welled up in Xena’s eyes as she knelt on the ground. “I know I was wrong. Please forgive me. Please don’t be mad at Mom and Dad anymore, okay?” Shane immediately stepped forward to pull her up. “What are you doing?
