Chapter 3

Author: Eli Sole
The engagement banquet went ahead as planned.

Since Mr. Perry Sr. was particularly fond of Layla, the event was lavishly organized, with many prominent families and close friends in attendance.

The banquet hall was brimming with glittering jewels, cheerful laughter, and a vibrant atmosphere.

Sean stood at the entrance, greeting guests with a polite smile, though his heart was restless with worry.

Time was ticking, and Layla still hadn’t arrived.

Mr. Perry Sr. approached with a stern expression. “Did you get into another fight with Layla?”

Sean quickly denied it. “No, Grandpa, don’t jump to conclusions.”

“It better be true,” Mr. Perry Sr. snapped, shooting him a glare. “Layla is the granddaughter-in-law I’ve chosen. If anything goes wrong with today’s engagement banquet, you might as well not come back to the Perry family!”

“Don’t worry, there won’t be any problems.”

As they were speaking, Mr. Perry Sr. suddenly lit up with a smile. “Layla!”

Sean followed his grandfather’s gaze and saw Layla approaching gracefully, dressed in a white dress, her high heels clicking softly against the floor.

A weight lifted off Sean’s chest, and a hint of smugness crossed his face as he raised an eyebrow. “So what if she moved out of the villa? In the end, she still came back to me like I knew she would,” he silently remarked.

However, Layla didn’t spare him so much as a glance and walked straight toward Mr. Perry Sr. instead.

“Why are you so late?” Mr. Perry Sr. asked.

“Grandpa, didn’t I tell you?” Sean quickly interjected, answering on her behalf. “Layla forgot something important at the last minute. Going back and forth took a while.”

Seizing the moment, he placed his hand on Layla’s shoulder and said warmly, “Layla, next time, let someone else handle small matters like that. Otherwise, Grandpa might think we were arguing on such an important day.”

His words were flawless, blending a show of affection with a subtle reminder for Layla to behave and not make a scene.

Layla stared at Sean for a long moment but said nothing.

Mr. Perry Sr. glanced between the two, sensing something wasn’t quite right, but on an occasion like this, he didn’t bother to dig deeper.

“Alright, as long as there’s no issue. By the way, someone from the Lucas family will be here today. When they arrive…”

Halfway through his sentence, Mr. Perry Sr. noticed a figure in the distance and immediately broke into a welcoming smile. “Speak of the devil—Mr. Lucas, what perfect timing!”

Sean froze for a moment. “Grandpa actually managed to invite him?” he muttered.

In North City, the Lucas family was the pinnacle of elite households, a top-tier family.

The Lucas family had vast wealth and numerous talented individuals, but none were as exceptional as William Lucas. After completing his education abroad, William returned to take over the family business, rapidly expanding their operations in just a few years and dominating the commercial sector.

Someone like him only appeared in business news, rarely mingling in high-society social circles.

Sean could hardly believe that William Lucas would attend his engagement banquet!

Overjoyed, Sean immediately abandoned Layla and followed closely behind Mr. Perry Sr. to greet William.

Layla relished the moment of peace and decided to grab something to eat. It was better to fill her stomach now than risk going hungry later.

What she didn’t realize was that a pair of eyes had been following her every move.

Standing beside William, Carter scratched his head in confusion. “Uncle William, I feel like I’ve seen that woman somewhere before.”

William cast him a cold glance. “Behave yourself.”

Carter stared, speechless.

Seriously? He was not the kind of guy who used cheesy lines to hit on someone! Goodness, what on earth did Uncle William think of him?

Elsewhere, Layla had just taken a bite of cake when she heard Xena’s voice behind her.

“Sis, I’m so glad you came! I thought you were still mad at Sean and me.”

Xena’s voice was sugary sweet, with a deliberate upward lilt at the end, making her sound innocent and playful—what some might call a “baby voice.”

“Sis, the misunderstanding last time was my fault. Sean only listened to me, and that’s why things got blown out of proportion.”

Xena reached for Layla’s hand, her expression cautious. “If you want to blame someone, blame me, okay?”

Layla wasn’t having any of it. She pulled her hand away without a word, her face emotionless.

Seeing this, Mrs. Xander frowned. “Your sister is apologizing to you! Is this how you’re going to respond?”

Shane Xander, her second brother, looked equally displeased. “Layla, don’t push your luck!”

“Is there some rule that says an apology must always be accepted?” Layla shot back, her gaze sweeping over the Xander family.

They all stood behind Xena, looking more like her family than hers. She had always been the outsider, the one left standing alone.

In the past, she had desperately tried to fit in. Now? A family she could never truly belong to wasn’t worth the effort. Life was short, and it wasn’t worth wasting it on things like this.

“Besides…” Layla cast a brief glance at Xena. “She owes me far more apologies than just this one.”

Xena was adept at reading people, skilled at manipulating their emotions. More importantly, she had both a greedy heart and a sharp mind.

Layla had long since noticed how Xena deliberately cozied up to Sean, constantly finding excuses for his help.

At first, Sean would complain to Layla, “Why does Xena always have so much going on?”

But over time, his complaints dwindled, and eventually, he began volunteering to help Xena. His heart had clearly shifted.

Layla couldn’t deny it. When it came to playing with people’s emotions, Xena had beaten her outright.

Since she couldn’t win, Layla decided she wouldn’t even try.

Besides, what was the point of holding onto someone’s heart? Would it prolong her life?

As she pulled herself out of her thoughts, the emcee on stage began testing the microphone.

Mr. Xander, assuming the role of a stern patriarch, spoke to her in a low, commanding tone. “Today is your big day. Be sensible and don’t embarrass the two families.”

Layla didn’t reply and instead turned to walk toward the stage.

Shane, frustrated by her lack of response, snapped, “Hey! Layla, don’t you have any manners? Dad is talking to you—”

“Enough,” Mr. Xander cut him off, grabbing his arm. “Stop making it worse.”

Undeterred, Shane turned to Xena with a sneer. “Xena, you don’t need to apologize to someone like her. She thinks she’s special just because she has Xander blood, but honestly, she’s not even worth a fraction of what you are!”

Xena’s voice wavered with feigned humility. “Shane, please don’t talk about Layla like that.”

“And yet you’re always defending her. Does she ever appreciate it? She’s so ungrateful!” Shane scoffed, his voice dripping with contempt. “I honestly wish she’d never come back to the Xander family! Having just you as my sister would have been enough!”

A sharp glare from Mr. Xander silenced Shane, though he was clearly reluctant to back down.

At that moment, Layla’s voice echoed through the speakers, reverberating across the banquet hall.

“Thank you all for attending today’s banquet. But I’m afraid I’ll have to disappoint you.”

Under the light, her white silk dress shimmered softly, highlighting her elegant and poised figure. She stood tall, her beauty cold and untouchable, like a flower on a distant mountaintop.

As the crowd watched in stunned silence, Layla removed the massive diamond ring from her finger. With a slight flick of her wrist, she tossed it perfectly into the top glass of the champagne tower.

“I am unilaterally canceling this engagement. From now on, Sean Perry and I have nothing to do with each other.”

The moment she finished speaking, the room erupted in chaos.

“What? Did I hear that right? Layla canceled the engagement?”

“No way! Has she lost her mind? She’s been groveling for years to secure this engagement, and now she’s giving it up?”

“Unbelievable…”

Voices overlapped in a buzz of disbelief and confusion.

Amidst the chaos, William stood calmly in the center of the room, his cold and imposing presence cutting a sharp contrast to the frantic crowd around him. He remained utterly unbothered, like an island untouched by the storm.

Beside him, Carter suddenly slapped his forehead. “I remember now! She’s the woman we rear-ended that day! The one who ran off after her hospital checkup. She has a malignant brain tumor!”

“I can’t believe it! She’s actually the bride-to-be at this engagement banquet!” Carter stared at the stage in disbelief, his eyes shining with excitement. “She’s incredible! The Perry family threw this grand event, and she just destroyed it like it was nothing!“Uncle William, we really came to the right event today!” Lost in his excitement, Carter didn’t notice that William’s gaze was fixed intently on Layla. Beneath the shadows of the lights, an unreadable depth stirred in his dark eyes, emotions surging quietly but intensely. On stage, Sean strode quickly toward Layla, an awkward smile plastered across his face. He forcefully pulled her into his arm. “Apologies, everyone. Layla was just joking around, trying to liven up the atmosphere,” he said with a strained grin. “Isn’t that right, Layla?” The words were practically forced through his teeth, dripping with menace. Layla remained expressionless as her voice rang out, loud and firm. “I’m not joking.” The cr

As soon as Layla stepped out, Carter dashed over, excitement written all over his face. He stopped in front of her and blurted, “Wow, you’re way too bold! With all those people in there, you didn’t spare a shred of dignity for the Perry or Xander families!”He added, grinning, “Honestly, you should’ve slapped those two cheaters right across their faces!” “And who are you?” Layla asked, a little speechless at how overly familiar this gossip-loving young man was. “I’m… uh…” Carter scratched his head awkwardly. “I was the one driving the car that rear-ended your taxi a week ago.” “Oh…” Layla responded lazily, clearly not interested in pursuing the matter. “You—” “Carter,” William called out.Hearing the warning tone in William’s voice, Carter immediately shut up, though his eyes still sparkled with admiration as he looked at Layla. Having grown up surrounded by the fake politeness and scheming of the upper class, Carter found Layla’s fearless attitude fascinating. And

“Just doing the right thing,” Carter chimed in from the driver’s seat, casually inserting himself into the conversation. “I recognized you the moment I saw you. Uncle William heard me out and decided to help. That’s just how he is—he can’t stand owing anyone.“Am I right, Uncle William?” Carter asked.William remained silent. Taking his uncle’s silence as confirmation, Carter raised an eyebrow smugly. “They say blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. I’ve seen it firsthand today. Sis, you might’ve been rear-ended by us, but I’d say your good fortune is just getting started!” “And now you’re acting like it’s a good thing you drive recklessly?” William’s deep voice cut in, sharp and disapproving. Carter chuckled sheepishly. “I was just trying to cheer her up. After everything she’s been through, her mood must be awful, right?” “I’m fine,” Layla said with a faint smile. “And you’re not wrong.” Blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. “Xena is your sister, and I’m her future brother-in-law. Is it wrong for me to take care of her?” Sean’s gaze moved past Layla, landing on William. “And what about you and Mr. Lucas? What’s your relationship? Why is he helping you?” Following Sean’s line of sight, Layla saw William approaching. Dressed sharply in a tailored suit, he walked with an aura so commanding it felt as though the world bowed at his feet under the golden sunlight. Sean’s question seemed aimed at both of them. Ignoring Sean’s hostility, William strode directly to Layla’s side. “Miss Xander, is there anything I can help you with?” Layla snapped out of her thoughts. “Mr. Lucas, why are you…” “After the accident, I’ve been thinking about your injury. I won’t feel at ease until I know you’ve fully recovered,” William said, handing her a bag of breakfast. “Carter asked me to bring this to you.” Accident? In just one week, Layla had received all kinds of deliveries, and without exception, every single one ended up in the trash. Today’s delivery was right on schedule: a large bouquet of vibrant yellow roses in full bloom. The delivery guy struggled to carry it to her door, sweating profusely. “Hi, your delivery is here.” Before he could finish, the door opened. Layla glanced briefly at the card’s signature. “Could you please throw it in the trash downstairs?” “What?” The delivery guy was stunned. “But these flowers are beautiful.” “They take up too much space.” Layla smiled politely before closing the door. She used to treasure the two bouquets she would receive every year—one for her birthday and one for her anniversary. She would carefully dry them and save them as keepsakes. But now, with flowers arriving daily, even a single glance made her feel like she was about to develop a pollen allergy. If nothing else, this ordeal had taught her something new. Sean a

After some thought, Sean concluded that his repeated attempts to appease Layla had only emboldened her. “Women shouldn’t be spoiled,” he told himself. For an entire week, Sean ignored Layla completely. That day, the company held a shareholder meeting. Sean sat confidently at the head of the table, listening as employees presented the third-quarter performance reports.Suddenly, the conference room doors burst open. Layla entered first, followed by a group of reporters with cameras in tow. Sean shot to his feet. “Layla, what the hell are you doing!” “Nothing much,” Layla replied with a lazy smile. “I just thought the shareholders deserved to know the truth. Oh, and leaking it to the press earns me a little extra cash. The money you offered me isn’t even enough for pocket change.” Sean’s face contorted with rage. “You’ve lost your mind!” “Sure, I’m crazy,” Layla sneered. “You drove me to it.” She turned to the bewildered shareholders. “I have some documents I’

“Of course,” William replied. “Then… can I move into your place?” Layla asked tentatively. William: “?” Even Mike, the usually stoic bodyguard trailing behind William, couldn’t hide the flicker of surprise on his face. He shot Layla a glance, clearly amazed at her audacity. This was William Lucas she was addressing—someone who valued peace and quiet so much that even his household staff had to avoid him during his hours at home. “Yes, you can.”Hearing William's response, Mike’s expression faltered completely. He stared at William in disbelief. “Did those words really just come out of Mr. Lucas’s mouth?” he questioned himself.“You don’t need to worry. I won’t stay for free,” Layla quickly offered. She pulled out her phone, tapped the screen a few times, and held it up for him. “Add my contact info. You can name your price, and I’ll treat it like I’m renting a room. I promise to keep a low profile. You can pretend I’m not even there if you like.” “That won’t be ne

When Sean escorted Xena back to the Xander residence, the family immediately swarmed around them with questions. “Sean, is everything they’re saying online true?” “What’s going on with your company? Are you really giving Layla her shares?” “Enough!” Xena interrupted, frustration evident in her voice. “Sean’s already dealing with enough. Stop adding to the stress.” It was only then that Mrs. Xander noticed Xena clutching her arm. “What happened to your arm?” “It’s nothing, just a little bruise,” Xena replied awkwardly, trying to hide it. But Sean grabbed her arm gently and pulled it closer, rolling up her sleeve to reveal a sizable bruise on her fair skin. His brows furrowed. “I’m taking you to the hospital.” “It’s fine,” Xena reassured him with a faint smile. “As long as the injury didn’t land on you, I’m happy.” Sean’s grip tightened as guilt flickered in his eyes, his focus remaining on her arm. “What happened?” Mr. Xander asked, his tone sharp. “It’s

“Layla, can’t you do this one last favor for the family?” Hearing Mr. Xander’s voice, Layla gestured for Mike to step aside. She then lifted her gaze, meeting his eyes head-on. “If I remember correctly, you said I had nothing to do with the Xander family anymore.” Mr. Xander faltered. “I… I did say that. But blood ties aren’t something you can just sever with a few angry words.” “Well, in my world, they’ve been severed.” Layla didn’t even bother asking what he wanted. The whole thing was laughable. “Coming to beg a woman in a wheelchair for help? You people really have no shame.” “Miss Xander has made herself very clear,” William said coldly. “Step aside.” “Mr. Lucas, you’ve been meddling in our family affairs for long enough. Out of respect for the Lucas family, I’ve tolerated it, but don’t forget—I’m still your elder.” “You don’t get to pull rank on me.” William’s patience had run out. He shot Mike a look, and Mike immediately stepped forward, grabbing Mr.

How can she possibly compare to your position as head of the Lucas family?“William, you’ve lost your mind! You’re throwing away your future for Layla! Do you have any idea how much your father and I have sacrificed to get you here? Is this how you repay us?” William’s gaze turned icy. His patience had clearly run thin. “Don’t use your standards to judge my choices.” His voice was calm but firm. “Since you’re here, I might as well tell you—I won’t be coming home for Thanksgiving. You and Dad can enjoy your perfect family gathering without me.” Scarlett froze. I had a part in that, so I… I just felt responsible.” “Are you getting soft?” Mr. Lucas Sr.’s voice cut through the room like a blade. He slammed his glass onto the table with a loud thud, making Scarlett jump. “Oh, come on!” She clutched her chest, exasperated. “Can’t we just talk like normal people? Do you have to scare me half to death?” “If I don’t make myself clear, you’ll think I’m joking.” His glare darkened. “You pity Layla—what about William? There was a sliver of hope—but not much. William’s mood didn’t improve. If anything, he felt even more frustrated, and the tension around him was impossible to ignore. Carter sensed it right away. Without wasting another second, he shot to his feet. “If there’s nothing else, I’ll get going. Uncle William, take good care of Sis.” With that, he bolted out the door like he was running for his life. As the sound of the door clicking shut echoed through the room, Layla finally spoke up. “Mr. Lucas, if you were going to give such an expensive gift, you should have told me first. I—” “I never planned on making you cover half the cost.” William cut her off effortlessly, his tone calm and indifferent. “You have to use bait if you want to catch a big fish.” Layla paused, then quickly caught on. “You’re trying to force Xena to turn to her backers for help again?” “Mm.” William lowered his gaze slightly, a hint of cold amusement flickering in his eyes. “Stay out of th

Mr. Perry Sr. has every right to take control.“By the time Sean returns, the Perry family will already have moved on without him.” Chris patted her shoulder. “Think about it. After saying that, Layla pulled out her phone and snapped several pictures of the snowball from different angles. “The more I look at it, the more it really does look like a rabbit.” She picked her favorite shot and uploaded it to social media with a simple caption: “A precious gift, fleeting but unforgettable.” It had been a long time since she last logged into her social accounts. She didn’t know why, but tonight, she felt a strong urge to capture the moment. After posting, she looked up at William and smiled warmly. “Thank you, Mr. Lucas.” A strange ripple passed through William’s chest. He quickly looked away, a little uneasy. “Let’s get you back inside.” *While Layla was enjoying the quiet beauty of the night, chaos had erupted in the Xander estate. From the moment Xena stepped through the door, she hadn’t stopped crying. Meanwhile, Chris had already filled their father in on everything he had learned. After hearing the full story, Mr. Xander slammed his

William gently lowered Layla into the wheelchair beside the bed. She froze for a moment before awkwardly retracting her hands. For a split second, an odd sense of disappointment flashed through her. Wait—no! Was she seriously expecting William to carry her all the way like some kind of princess? She shook off that dangerous thought immediately, straightened her posture, and let him wheel her out of the hospital room. *Outside, the night was silent except for the soft whisper of falling snow. The wheelchair rolled over a thin layer of fresh snow, leaving behind two clear tracks—along with a set of steady footprints following closely behind. William pushed Layla toward the gazebo in the center of the hospital’s small garden. Once they reached it, he took off his coat and draped it over her shoulders. It was still warm from his body heat. Layla glanced at him, about to refuse—but in the end, she swallowed the words. Forget it. He was just being a gentlem

Before the banquet, William had already discussed with Mr. Perry Sr. how to set up Xena. That jade bonsai? He was the one who had shattered it first—then carefully had it pieced back together. No matter how Sean and Xena tried to defend themselves, the blame would land squarely on them. Luckily, even fate seemed to be on their side. The two had pushed the gift over themselves, making its destruction seem completely natural. Sean’s reputation was in shambles, and now he carried a massive debt on his shoulders—one that he would ultimately take out on Xena. Her dream of marrying Sean? Dead. The only regret? Layla hadn’t been there to witness the show herself. “Mr. Perry Sr., sorry for disrupting your birthday celebration tonight. And thank you for playing along.” “No need for thanks.” Mr. Perry Sr. looked up at the night sky, his aged eyes filled with deep contemplation. “I once wanted Layla to marry Sean. Seeing that neither Sean nor Xena spoke up, Mr. Perry Sr. let out a furious laugh. “Oh? Oh, I see how it is! If neither of you want to take responsibility, then you’ll both pay for it!” He turned to William. “Tell me, how much did that gift cost? Whatever it is, they’ll compensate you.” William’s gaze lingered on the shattered jade pieces. His voice remained calm. “Mr. Perry Sr., you’re letting your anger cloud your judgment. Since the gift was for you, it belongs to you now. If anyone should be reimbursed, it’s you.” His tone was light, but he sighed faintly. “It’s just a shame… Layla spent so much time picking out this jade bonsai for you. She put a lot of thought into it. We should make sure she never finds out—it would only upset her.” Hearing this, Mr. Perry Sr. felt a pang of guilt and frustration. “Absolutely. Layla must never know. I’ll have these two buy an identical replacement so she doesn’t suspect anything.” William gave a slight nod. “You always think ah
