Chapter 5

Author: Eli Sole
As soon as Layla stepped out, Carter dashed over, excitement written all over his face. He stopped in front of her and blurted, “Wow, you’re way too bold! With all those people in there, you didn’t spare a shred of dignity for the Perry or Xander families!”

He added, grinning, “Honestly, you should’ve slapped those two cheaters right across their faces!”

“And who are you?” Layla asked, a little speechless at how overly familiar this gossip-loving young man was.

“I’m… uh…” Carter scratched his head awkwardly. “I was the one driving the car that rear-ended your taxi a week ago.”

“Oh…” Layla responded lazily, clearly not interested in pursuing the matter.

“You—”

“Carter,” William called out.

Hearing the warning tone in William’s voice, Carter immediately shut up, though his eyes still sparkled with admiration as he looked at Layla.

Having grown up surrounded by the fake politeness and scheming of the upper class, Carter found Layla’s fearless attitude fascinating. And to top it off, his usually aloof uncle had stepped in to help her. It was practically a miracle!

Layla turned to William. “Thanks for earlier.”

“Don’t mention it.” William’s expression remained calm, though for a brief moment, a hint of unease flickered across his face. “Where are you headed? I’ll take you there.”

“That’s okay. I’ll grab a taxi.”

“Taxi? Seriously?” Carter jumped in, pushing Layla gently toward the parking lot. “Since my uncle’s already helped you, why not let us see it through? Besides, what taxi could possibly be more comfortable than my uncle’s Maybach?”

“Last time, we dropped you off at the hospital, but you ran off before I even got the chance to make it up to you. Let me consider this my redemption—just one ride!”

Before Layla could protest, Carter ushered her into the back seat of the Maybach with a cheeky grin. “Come on, give me a chance here.”

Resigned, Layla sighed. She didn’t have the energy to argue. She had spent all her strength walking away from everything.

Now, as she settled into the car, a dull ache began to pulse in her head.

She gave the driver her address, murmured a quick thank you, and leaned against the window, closing her eyes. She didn’t want anyone noticing her exhaustion.

Meanwhile, in the Perry and Xander families’ lounge, the atmosphere was stifling.

Mr. Perry Sr. sat at the head of the room, his expression so dark it seemed ink could drip from it. He hadn’t stepped in earlier to avoid public embarrassment, but now, staring at Sean, his anger only grew.

Snatching a teacup from the table, he hurled it at Sean’s feet. “You useless fool! What the hell did you do to push Layla to this point?”

“I didn’t…” Sean mumbled, his head hanging low, guilt evident in his voice. “It’s all just a misunderstanding. I didn’t explain things clearly to Layla.”

“Misunderstanding?”

Mr. Perry Sr. let out a cold laugh, his sharp gaze sweeping toward Xena. The sheer force of his presence made her shrink back, half hiding behind Mrs. Xander in fear.

Sean sensed the tension and quickly interjected, “This has nothing to do with Xena. It’s all because Layla overthought things and made baseless accusations, which led to—”

“You know full well whether the two of you are innocent or not,” Mr. Perry Sr. cut him off sharply, his expression growing darker with each passing moment. “If you had even shown a shred of support for Layla earlier, she wouldn’t have walked out like that!”

“Sean, I always thought you were the most level-headed among my grandchildren. But your actions today have truly disappointed me.”

“Mr. Perry Sr., you can’t put all the blame on Sean for what happened today,” Mr. Xander said cautiously, trying to smooth things over. “It’s our fault for not raising Layla properly. That’s why she acted so disgracefully. We’ll make sure to talk to her about it later.”

“You’re focusing on the wrong person,” Mr. Perry Sr. replied coldly, his gaze cutting through the room.

Mr. Perry Sr. had long been aware that the Xander family didn’t truly care for Layla, but he hadn’t realized the extent of their favoritism until now.

Recalling the slap Layla endured earlier, a trace of sadness flickered across his expression before his voice turned colder. “If you, as her father, had any sense of decency, you wouldn’t have laid a hand on her in front of everyone.

“I think it’s you who needs to reflect on your actions and figure out who the real Xander heiress is.”

Every word was both a defense of Layla and a pointed reminder to the Xander family that Layla was the rightful daughter of the house, the true heiress.

The Xander family understood the message loud and clear, their faces turning pale with embarrassment.

Leaning on his cane, Mr. Perry Sr. stood and moved toward Sean. His tone left no room for argument as he issued an ultimatum.

“If you can’t convince Layla to come back, don’t bother coming back to the Perry family yourself.

“I recognize only Layla as my granddaughter-in-law.”

After a brief pause, he added sternly, “And don’t forget, your mess has already drawn the attention of William Lucas. Be careful how you handle this. Offending him is something we cannot afford.”

“Yes, Grandpa. I understand,” Sean replied, bowing his head.

Once Mr. Perry Sr. left the room, the tension eased slightly, though the air remained heavy.

Before long, Xena’s soft sobbing filled the silence.

Mrs. Xander turned to embrace her daughter, her heart aching. “Oh, my sweet girl, why are you crying? This isn’t your fault. Your sister is the one being unreasonable.”

“That useless Layla doesn’t even know her place!” Shane spat, his voice filled with disdain. “She’s made such a spectacle today. How is she ever going to show her face in society again?

“And to top it off, she had the audacity to throw mud at Xena. She’s lost her mind! Having someone like her in our family is a complete embarrassment.”

“Don’t talk about her like that, Shane,” Xena said between soft sobs. “It’s all my fault.”

“Shane’s not wrong.” Sean’s cold voice cut through the room.

After today’s debacle, even if Layla returned to him, she would be nothing but a laughingstock in their social circle. But this was her own doing.

If she had just gone along with the engagement, she could have become his legitimate fiancée without issue. Now that things had turned so ugly, he was curious to see how she intended to clean up the mess.

“You all head back first,” Sean said as he picked up his car keys. “I’m going to find Layla.”

“Sean,” Xena called after him, hurrying to grab his arm. “I’ll go with you to talk to my sister. I can’t let you take all the blame on your own.”

Looking into Xena’s tear-filled eyes, Sean found himself unable to refuse.

After a brief hesitation, he sighed softly. “If only Layla were half as thoughtful and considerate as you.”

When Layla woke up, she was still in the Maybach. Half-asleep, she became aware of a gaze on her.

Rubbing her eyes, she glanced around and saw William sitting across from her, his gaze fixed on the city lights outside the window. The play of light and shadow highlighted the sharp, elegant angles of his profile, like the most striking brushstroke in an ink painting.

“This man is ridiculously handsome! He looks even better than the polished, airbrushed photos of him in financial magazines,” she thought to herself.

Over the years, Layla had quietly supported Sean from behind the scenes, which naturally meant she had come across plenty of information about William. She admired his brilliance and cunning and had even fantasized about meeting him someday, hoping to pick up a thing or two from his expertise.

But she had never expected their paths to cross like this.

Lost in thought, Layla didn’t realize she had been staring until William turned to face her. Rather than looking away, she met his gaze calmly and directly.

“Mr. Lucas, why did you help me?” she asked softly.

“Just doing the right thing,” Carter chimed in from the driver’s seat, casually inserting himself into the conversation. “I recognized you the moment I saw you. Uncle William heard me out and decided to help. That’s just how he is—he can’t stand owing anyone.“Am I right, Uncle William?” Carter asked.William remained silent. Taking his uncle’s silence as confirmation, Carter raised an eyebrow smugly. “They say blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. I’ve seen it firsthand today. Sis, you might’ve been rear-ended by us, but I’d say your good fortune is just getting started!” “And now you’re acting like it’s a good thing you drive recklessly?” William’s deep voice cut in, sharp and disapproving. Carter chuckled sheepishly. “I was just trying to cheer her up. After everything she’s been through, her mood must be awful, right?” “I’m fine,” Layla said with a faint smile. “And you’re not wrong.” Blessings and misfortunes go hand in hand. What’s your relationship? Why is he helping you?” Following Sean’s line of sight, Layla saw William approaching. Dressed sharply in a tailored suit, he walked with an aura so commanding it felt as though the world bowed at his feet under the golden sunlight. Sean’s question seemed aimed at both of them. Ignoring Sean’s hostility, William strode directly to Layla’s side. “Miss Xander, is there anything I can help you with?” Layla snapped out of her thoughts. “Mr. Lucas, why are you…” “After the accident, I’ve been thinking about your injury. I won’t feel at ease until I know you’ve fully recovered,” William said, handing her a bag of breakfast. “Carter asked me to bring this to you.” Accident? In just one week, Layla had received all kinds of deliveries, and without exception, every single one ended up in the trash. Today’s delivery was right on schedule: a large bouquet of vibrant yellow roses in full bloom. The delivery guy struggled to carry it to her door, sweating profusely. “Hi, your delivery is here.” Before he could finish, the door opened. Layla glanced briefly at the card’s signature. “Could you please throw it in the trash downstairs?” “What?” The delivery guy was stunned. “But these flowers are beautiful.” “They take up too much space.” Layla smiled politely before closing the door. She used to treasure the two bouquets she would receive every year—one for her birthday and one for her anniversary. She would carefully dry them and save them as keepsakes. But now, with flowers arriving daily, even a single glance made her feel like she was about to develop a pollen allergy. If nothing else, this ordeal had taught her something new. Sean a

After some thought, Sean concluded that his repeated attempts to appease Layla had only emboldened her. “Women shouldn’t be spoiled,” he told himself. For an entire week, Sean ignored Layla completely. That day, the company held a shareholder meeting. Sean sat confidently at the head of the table, listening as employees presented the third-quarter performance reports.Suddenly, the conference room doors burst open. Layla entered first, followed by a group of reporters with cameras in tow. Sean shot to his feet. “Layla, what the hell are you doing!” “Nothing much,” Layla replied with a lazy smile. “I just thought the shareholders deserved to know the truth. Oh, and leaking it to the press earns me a little extra cash. The money you offered me isn’t even enough for pocket change.” Sean’s face contorted with rage. “You’ve lost your mind!” “Sure, I’m crazy,” Layla sneered. “You drove me to it.” She turned to the bewildered shareholders. “I have some documents I’

“Of course,” William replied. “Then… can I move into your place?” Layla asked tentatively. William: “?” Even Mike, the usually stoic bodyguard trailing behind William, couldn’t hide the flicker of surprise on his face. He shot Layla a glance, clearly amazed at her audacity. This was William Lucas she was addressing—someone who valued peace and quiet so much that even his household staff had to avoid him during his hours at home. “Yes, you can.”Hearing William's response, Mike’s expression faltered completely. He stared at William in disbelief. “Did those words really just come out of Mr. Lucas’s mouth?” he questioned himself.“You don’t need to worry. I won’t stay for free,” Layla quickly offered. She pulled out her phone, tapped the screen a few times, and held it up for him. “Add my contact info. You can name your price, and I’ll treat it like I’m renting a room. I promise to keep a low profile. You can pretend I’m not even there if you like.” “That won’t be ne

When Sean escorted Xena back to the Xander residence, the family immediately swarmed around them with questions. “Sean, is everything they’re saying online true?” “What’s going on with your company? Are you really giving Layla her shares?” “Enough!” Xena interrupted, frustration evident in her voice. “Sean’s already dealing with enough. Stop adding to the stress.” It was only then that Mrs. Xander noticed Xena clutching her arm. “What happened to your arm?” “It’s nothing, just a little bruise,” Xena replied awkwardly, trying to hide it. But Sean grabbed her arm gently and pulled it closer, rolling up her sleeve to reveal a sizable bruise on her fair skin. His brows furrowed. “I’m taking you to the hospital.” “It’s fine,” Xena reassured him with a faint smile. “As long as the injury didn’t land on you, I’m happy.” Sean’s grip tightened as guilt flickered in his eyes, his focus remaining on her arm. “What happened?” Mr. Xander asked, his tone sharp. “It’s

The next morning, Layla finally noticed the buzz online. Lost in thought, she didn’t realize her other hand was still holding the kettle, pouring water until a firm hand gripped her wrist. Startled, she looked up to meet William's calm, steady gaze.“What’s got you so distracted?” he asked. Snapping out of it, Layla quickly pulled her hand back and placed the kettle on the counter. “I was just checking my phone…” she said, hesitating for a moment before turning the screen toward him. “I went out with Carter yesterday and didn’t expect someone to take pictures. It seems like it’s causing a lot of trouble for him. Should I talk to him and help clear things up?”Layla wasn’t familiar with entertainment news and had no idea Carter was preparing to debut as a celebrity. If she had known, she would have been more cautious.“No need,” William replied just as his phone buzzed with a call from Carter. As soon as he answered, Carter’s anxious voice came through. “Uncle William, is Layl

Sean hadn’t managed to hear a word from Layla before Xena suddenly dropped to her knees, pleading desperately.“Sis, please, let Sean go,” Xena’s voice was choked with sobs. “You love him, don’t you? How can you bear to let him suffer like this? If Grandpa Perry keeps going, Sean might really get hurt!”Susan quickly joined in, raising her voice. “Layla, do you want my son dead before you’re satisfied?”Layla calmly set down her teacup, her gaze shifting to Xena with an air of indifference. “First of all, whether or not I love him is none of your business. And second, whether or not he’s hurting, you’re in no position to feel sorry for him.“He betrayed me. He deserves this.”Hearing this, Susan raised her voice in protest. “What has Sean ever done to wrong you? You’ve been his only girlfriend, his only fiancée, from the very beginning!“My son is outstanding! He’s already treated you better than most would. What more do you want?”Layla curled her lips into a mocking smile. “Th

The Xander family crowded around her, fussing over her like attendants catering to a queen. The image was so ridiculous that Layla almost burst out laughing.“Layla Xander! You actually have the nerve to show up here?” Shane was the first to spot her, immediately stepping in front of Xena like a human shield. “What now? Trying to throw more dirt on Xena?“Didn’t you swear up and down that you had evidence? And now? Nothing. Just baseless accusations. Her expression turned cold. “If Layla dares to slander you again, I’ll be the first to make her pay!” “Mom…” Xena’s eyes shimmered with emotion as she reached for her mother’s hand. “As long as you all believe in me, I don’t care what anyone else says.” “That’s your problem, Xena! No one really knew what kind of person Layla had grown into under her adoptive parents’ care. And now, Chris finally saw the truth—she was beyond saving. Shane leaned in, eager to chime in. “Xena, I believe you too!” Mrs. Xander clutched Xena’s hand tightly. “Our family believes in you.” Mr. Xander, however, remained silent, his expression grim. He had been counting on Xena’s child to seal the family’s alliance with the Perry family. But now, with the baby gone, so was that last shred of hope. *Once they returned to the hospital room, Layla sank back onto the bed. Only now did she fully register just how exhausted she was—every muscle ached, and she didn’t even want to move. William poured a cup of warm water and set it beside her. “You didn’t need to handle this yourself. Wasn’t she simply asking for what was supposed to be hers? A father’s love. A mother’s care. A sibling’s protection. Were those things she was supposed to beg for? Layla’s chest tightened with bitterness, but her smile only grew colder. “It’s not me who refuses to change. It’s you.” There was no point in arguing anymore.
