"Damn! This old man is at it again," Morris muttered under his breath, the veins on his forehead bulging as his face flushed red with anger. He immediately stood up, but Amaya grabbed his hand tightly.
"Calm down," she whispered just loud enough for him to hear. "People are watching."
Meanwhile, Jeffery kept his composure, masking his shock behind a calm, unreadable face. Inside, though, he was boiling, a lot was going through his mind
Grandpa Lu continued, "We will communicate the wedding details to you soon." he flashed a quick smile.
Anita looked as if she'd just been crowned queen. Her eyes sparkled with excitement, and her smile stretched so wide it almost hurt. This announcement had taken her by surprise, but it was the surprise she had always dreamed of.
Guests started congratulating Jeffery and Anita. Jeffery kept his cool, offering polite smiles but deep down, he wanted to leave the party already.
"Now, let the birthday celebrations begin! Eat and be merry!" Grandpa Lu declared, dropping the mic as he joined the merry.
Morris squeezed Amaya’s hand. "My emotions are under control, trust me," he said before stalking towards his father, who was busy greeting guests.
"Can I have a word with you? Privately," Morris said.
"Why now, son? I have to entertain my guests. Can't you read the room?" Grandpa Lu replied.
Morris insisted, this time adding a pleading "please."
Reluctantly, Grandpa Lu followed him a few steps away from the main gathering.
"Now you have my attention. What is it?"
"Father, you know how Jeff would react to this. Why can't you let him make his own decisions? Must you always play puppet master with our lives?" Morris ranted.
Grandpa Lu gave him a long, assessing look before turning his gaze forward.
"I didn't build the Lu Empire by making decisions based on emotions. Marriage is a strategic alliance, the best kind of tidings."
Morris exhaled sharply, barely believing he was hearing this again.
"Please, Father, let Jeffery make his own choice. He's an adult for crying out loud!" His voice unintentionally rose.
Grandpa Lu shot him a stern look.
"Please," Morris said again, this time more like a desperate plea.
"This is not your decision to make, son. You took your mother's weak heart. I won't allow you to infect my grandson with the same disease. A true Lu doesn't stick to emotions," he said coldly, tapping Morris lightly on the shoulder before turning back.
Just as Grandpa Lu was about to melt back into the crowd, Morris's voice stopped him cold.
"You won't win this time. That's a promise."
Grandpa Lu smirked over his shoulder. "I'd love to see you try, son."
With that, he returned to the party.

Later that night, the Lu estate fell into uneasy silence. Grandpa Lu, as always, slept with the lights on, an old habit he developed from childhood.
Jeffery sat stiffly on a couch in Grandpa Lu’s room, his eyes sharp and bright in the half-light, revealing he hadn't slept a wink.
When Grandpa Lu woke up in the morning and saw a shadowy figure sitting silently, he yelped.
"Goodness! Do you want to give your old man a panic attack?!"
"Good morning, Grandpa. I needed to be the first person you see this morning. Keeps your mind sharper," Jeffery said, handing him a cup of coffee.
Grandpa Lu sniffed it suspiciously before sipping. "No sugar, less milk. Just how I like it."
He narrowed his eyes at Jeffery. "Why are you up so early? Did you even sleep? And why are you still in your suit?"
"Forget my appearance, Grandpa. It's temporary," Jeffery said. "I needed you to be sober. You had too much to drink last night."
Grandpa Lu huffed. "You brat! I had only one glass of champagne."
"You were drunk," Jeffery said without mincing wordst. "That's the only logical explanation for the announcement you made."
Grandpa Lu grumbled, opening the windows to let in the fresh morning sunlight.
"It's a good day," he muttered while sipping his coffee.
"You still make the best coffee, son. Anita is lucky to have you as her husband."
The word "husband" made Jeffery’s fist clench involuntarily.
He stood up abruptly. "Grandfather, I'm not joking. Fix your mess."
“You won’t make such an important decision for me
Without waiting for a response, he stormed out of the room.
***************
On the staircase, Morris intercepted him.
"Son, can I talk to you for a few minutes? Please," he said, following him to his room.
"I know we haven't had the best relationship over the years," Morris began, voice shaky, "but I still love you, son. Always have."
"Isn't it too early for this?" Jeffery asked coldly.
"Listen to me. You don't have to go through with this marriage if you don't want to. I don't want you to make the same mistakes I did."
Jeffery’s eyes narrowed. "By mistakes, you mean Mom?"
Morris hesitated, guilt flashing across his features.
Jeffery smiled bitterly. "Don't worry. I won’t make the same mistakes. I’ll never have two families, hurting one over another."
With that, he walked out, leaving Morris standing there, drowning in regret.

Jeffery drove like a man possessed toward his penthouse. As soon as he arrived, he threw his bag across the room.
"That old man is getting on my last nerve!"
Fred, who had been waiting for him, stood up. "The news isn’t widespread yet. We still have time to clear up the mess."
Jeffery went straight to the bar, pouring himself a glass of whiskey and downing it in one gulp.
"Easy, you’ll burn your throat," Fred warned.
"I've been burning for years," Jeffery muttered. "Maybe it's time to quench the fire."
Fred sighed heavily. "Your family saved me when I had nothing. When my mom left my dad and my dad became useless, they took me in. They made me the man I am today."
Jeffery’s silence was deafening.
"We can still sort this out."
Jeffery glanced at him. "Fred, get the jet ready. I’m flying to New York in a few hours."
Fred nodded. "If it’ll make you feel better, I'll arrange everything."

Meanwhile, in New York, Angelie sat outside, watching the birds fly happily above the sky, like their owned it. The world around her felt so peaceful. If only her heart matched.
It had been a month since she arrived, and so far, the experience had been healing. Learning new cuisines, laughing with Flora, it all gave her small pockets of happiness.
She was lost in thought when Sonia and her group approached.
"Look who we have here, sitting all alone," Sonia sneered.
Angelie rolled her eyes. She wasn’t in the mood.
"What do you want?"
"She's asking what I want, like she can offer me anything," Sonia cackled.
"Has anyone told you how ugly you are?" Sonia spat.
Angelie smiled sweetly. "Ugly enough to make you feel insecure, apparently. If I were pretty, you'd probably kill yourself."
The girls gasped. Sonia, in a fit of rage, grabbed Angelie’s hair.
"Let go, you bitch!" Angelie hissed.
"Or what?"
"Or the birds will feast on your bones, and your funeral won’t even be delayed a day more," A voice said from behind
Thousands of years could pass, and Angelie would still recognize that voice, the voice that haunted her dreams but also warmed her heart."Jeff," she whispered, barely believing her eyes.Sonia immediately released her grip on Angelie's hair. The man in front of her screams power and danger, an aura so intense that even the boldest would hesitate."Who are you?" Sonia asked with a shaky voice."Someone capable of destroying your entire generation, Ms..," Jeffery said, his voice low and full of rage as he stepped closer."If you ever try this mistake again, consider your life gone. I don't make promises I don't keep."Sonia and her girls, trembling in fear, turned and ran without looking back. All the while, Angelie stood frozen. She couldn't believe Jeff was here, her prince in shining armor."Are you okay, Angelie?" A disgusted look was plastered across Jeffrey's face. Jeff's voice thundered, drawing their attention.Lizzy wished the ground would open and swallow her at the moment; she hastily grabbed her clothes from the floor and ran out of the office, her face burning with embarrassment.Lucas, however, showed no ounce of shame. He zipped up his trousers lazily and smirked."You want to join the show, brother?" Lucas sneered."How shameless can one be? No courtesy for the office or any iota of respect."Lucas shrugged, that devilish grin never leaving his face. "Said the man who can't let go of his brother's wife. Talking of courtesy, nothing stops you from knocking. You just cut off my enjoyment."Jeff clenched his fists. He knew exactly what Lucas was tryi

The hospital waiting room smelled like antiseptic and stale coffee. Angelie sat on the cold plastic chair, her fingers clenched around the fraying strap of her handbag. Her eyes hadn’t left the doctor’s office door since he’d gone in with Tim’s latest test results. Her twin brother was down the hall, unconscious again. Pale. Fading.“Angelie?”She stood so fast the strap snapped off her bag. She didn’t even look at it.Dr. Harrow’s expression told her everything before he said a word.“It’s progressed faster than we hoped,” he said gently. “Tim’s kidneys are failing. Completely this time. We need a transplant. Soon.”She blinked. “How soon is ‘soon’?”He hesitated. “Two weeks. Maybe less.”Angelie felt the ground slip out from under her. “We don’t have that kind of money.”“I know. But there’s a donor. A private one. The procedure would happen at St. Nicholas. They can do it quickly if the financial part is handled.”“How much?”“Three hundred and fifty thousand.”She felt like he’d p
Jeffery’s name still hung in the air like a gunshot.Angelie’s fingers stiffened around the hem of her coat. She looked at Lucas, searching his face for a hint of bluff. A twitch. A lie. But he looked entirely too pleased with himself.“You said he wouldn’t be a problem,” she said slowly.Lucas shrugged, shutting the door behind her. “Plans change.”“How soon is he back?”Lucas turned toward the grand staircase, loosening his tie like her presence was an afterthought. “A few days. Three, maybe. Long enough for us to file the license and start making the press rounds.”Her stomach flipped.“You’re pushing this,” she said, suddenly aware of how fast everything was moving. “You want him to see it, don’t you?”Lucas stopped halfway up the stairs and looked down at her. “I want him to know he lost.”“That’s not what this is about for me,” she said, jaw tight. “This is about saving Tim.”He tilted his head. “Then we’re both getting what we want. Isn’t that the foundation of a good marriage?
The words echoed in her chest like a bullet."Jeffery lands on Tuesday."Angelie stood frozen in the hallway, her fingers clutched around the banister, heart racing. Lucas had said it with a smile, like it was good news. Like it was a game. But to Angelie, it felt like the moment everything would fall apart.Tuesday.Three days.Three days before the man she couldn’t forget came back to see her married to his brother. She went to bed that night still wearing the ivory press dress. The zipper caught, but she didn’t care. She sat on the edge of the massive bed in the guest room Lucas had called “temporary,” staring into nothing.Every breath felt borrowed.Every second with Lucas felt like a countdown.Would Jeffrey believe the headlines?Would he see through them?Would he even want to?********Morning came like punishment. Angelie hadn’t slept. She’d lain in that enormous bed all night, staring at the ceiling, not blinking, not crying. Just… existing. Her body buzzed like it was on the edge of shutting down, but her mind wouldn’t quit. It just kept playing one line on repeat:Jeffery’s coming.Today.To this house. And he’d see her.In this dress. With that man.A new dress had been laid out for her, ivory again. Almost white. Pretty, expensive. Lucas had chosen it. Probably with a smirk. Because nothing he did was ever neutral. She wore it anyway. What was the point in fighting something you couldn’t escape?**********Downstairs, the house was buzzing with quiet chaos. Her head spun. Her mouth was dry. What time was it?The wine. Last night. She remembered the knock. Julia. The tray. The two glasses. The way Julia hadn’t met her eyes. She remembered one sip. Maybe two. Then, nothing. Her breath caught. She touched her lips, then her chest, then her thighs.A slow chill crept into her bones. She didn’t remember coming to bed.Didn’t remember undressing.Didn’t remember anything after that first sip of wine. Her heart raced. Was it just sleep? Or something else?Something she didn’t want to name. She got out of bed s

Jeffery said, stretching the word "Dad" like he needed to lay an emphasis..Without waiting for a reply, he turned and left the study room, the door clicking shut behind him.Morris stared into the thin air, like he was looking at an object. It was easy to put up a strong face for the world, but deep down, the pain cut throught his soul. Watching his son drift further away was like dying slowly. Some truths, he thought, were better left unsaid. "Engagement?" Jeffery said repeatedly, blinking as if he had misheard. Calmly, and without raising his voice, he spoke, "Grandpa, I know you want the best for me, just like you wanted the best for Dad. They stood there for a moment, longer than necessary, caught in the kind of silence that felt loud. Angelie was the first to glance away, trying to control her breathing. Her heart thumped like a drum in her chest, not because she was scared, but because this man had always had that effect on her.Jeffery broke the silence first. "How are you, Angelie?"His voice was low, but it sounded like a melody to her ears.“I’m good,” she said, voice softer than she intended. But she wasn’t. Not really. She hadn’t been good since the day she said "I do" to the wrong brother. Still, she didn’t want to seem weak, not in front of him.Angelie couldn’t explain the sudden rush of nerves. She felt like sixteen again, standing before her secret crush. Jeffery always had a way of disarming her, reducing her to the shy, unsure girl who once spilled coffee on his expensive suit and blushed for three days straight.“You came to see me… why?” she asked, finally meeting his eyes.Jeffery hesitated for a hea
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to barge in like that. I think I missed my way,” Angelie said, embarrassed, already backing toward the door.Damien smiled, the kind of smile that made you wonder if he practiced it in the mirror. “You must be new here,” he said, his voice smooth and clear, almost like a melody. “Always use your map till you get used to this place. The building can be confusing.”“I forgot mine in my room,” Angelie confessed, adjusting her bag.“No worries,” he said, that calm look never leaving his face. “What’s your room number?”She told him, and without hesitation, he stepped forward.“Come on, I’ll walk you there.”They moved down the hallway together, and a few turns later, they reached her room.Just as Angelie was thanking him, the door flung open, and Damien left.Flora stood there, wide-eyed.“No way! A girl, about her age, was already throwing daggers with her eyes.“Are you blind, Miss?” the girl snapped, brushing invisible dirt off her outfit.Angelie blinked. “You weren’t looking your way either; that makes both of us blind.”With that, she grabbed her rolling suitcase and continued walking, her head high. A small grin played on her lips. Where did I get such courage? She wondered. Maybe it really does feel good to stand up for yourself. As she dragged her luggage down the hall, another girl about her age caught up with her, her voice light and cheerful.“I love what you did back there,” the girl said. “That’s Sonia. She acts like she owns the place.
