"Engagement?" Jeffery said repeatedly, blinking as if he had misheard. His grandfather's words lingered awkwardly between them.
"I wasn’t joking when I said you need to get closer to Anita," Grandpa Lu said, swirling his glass in his hand, his face was still calm.
“You’re not getting younger either.”
Jeffery stood silent for a moment, his hands tucked neatly into his pockets. Calmly, and without raising his voice, he spoke, "Grandpa, I know you want the best for me, just like you wanted the best for Dad. But maybe, just maybe... if you hadn’t interfered so much in his life, he and my mother wouldn’t have lived so miserably."
Grandpa Lu stiffened, but Jeffery’s tone remained respectful, his words calculated.
"Some things," Jeffery continued, "are better left to the people involved. Let me make my own mistakes, my own choices."
There was a heavy silence.
Jeffery exhaled and gave a slight bow of his head. "I’ll be in my room. Call me if you need anything, Grandpa."
Without waiting for a response, he turned and headed up the stairs, without looking back.

Angelie groaned as the morning sun sliced through her curtains. She sat up, blinking groggily.
"Angelie! We’re late!" Flora’s voice echoed from outside..
Angelie winced, clutching her head. "You go ahead! I’ll catch up!" she called back.
She flopped back onto her pillow, smiling as Jeffrey’s face floated into her mind.
The last three days had been torturous. Dreaming about him, thinking about him, and waking up feeling flushed and aching for more.
He was like chocolate. Sweet, addictive, and bad for her sanity.
Dragging herself out of bed, she swung her legs off the mattress and immediately yelped, clutching her stomach.
"Shit," she hissed. "Of course. It's that time of the month."
She sighed, quickly used the shower, changed into her uniform, and hurried out the door.
By the time she reached the classroom, she was breathless.
"You’re late, Angelie," the instructor said sharply.
"I’m sorry, ma'am. It won’t happen again," Angelie bowed quickly.
"Take your seat."
Angelie nodded and hurried to her usual seat, only to find it missing.
She froze, confusion clouding her face. Flora, already seated, raised her hands in a helpless gesture. Sonia sat a few rows back, smirking triumphantly.
“Let’s see how she gets out of this one,” she whispered to her girls.
Angelie’s heart dropped.
Before humiliation could engulf her, Damien stood from his double desk, casually lifting his bag onto his lap to free the seat.
"You can sit here," he said softly.
Angelie hesitated, but the instructor’s sharp glare propelled her forward.
Sonia’s face twisted with fury.
"That bastard," she muttered under her breath. "This isn’t over."
Flora caught Angelie's eye and winked. They would be talking about this later.
Throughout the class, Angelie clutched her stomach, biting her lip against the cramps.
His attention was on her, for a weird reason, he couldn’t explain, while he was so drawn to her.
Damien leaned over. "You okay?" he whispered.
Angelie smiled weakly. "Girls' issues," she murmured back.
He nodded knowingly. He had sisters, he understood.

Later, at the cafeteria, Flora and Angelie sat in a quiet corner.
"Are you okay?" Flora asked, concern etched on her face.
"Cramps. That time of the month," Angelie groaned, resting her head on the table.
"Well, look on the bright side, you’re not pregnant," Flora teased. "I hope mine comes too."
Angelie lifted her head, chuckling. "Why wouldn’t it?"
Flora leaned in and whispered, "I made out with my boyfriend... and I wasn’t exactly in my safe period."
Angelie’s mouth dropped open. "You better start saving for diapers."
Flora smacked her shoulder lightly. "Not funny! He’s too sweet for me to say no to. I just hope he doesn’t get me in the family way.
Angelie sobered, curiosity flickering in her eyes. "What’s it like? Being with someone you love... making out, going wild..."
Flora grinned mischievously. "It’s like setting fire to dry wood. Every kiss, every touch feels electric. Your body responds before your brain can catch up. You lose yourself."
Angelie’s cheeks turned bright red.
"One day," Flora said encouragingly, "you’ll find someone who makes you forget where you end and he begins."
Angelie smiled shyly.
But then Flora’s eyes widened. "Wait... are you... a virgin?"
Angelie’s cheeks burned hotter. She tried to distract, looking away.
"No way!" Flora squeaked, covering her mouth. "My baby!"
She leaned in closer. "Do you have a man?"
Angelie bit her lip, struggling with the truth.
"It’s complicated," she said finally.
Flora looked ready to pry, but Damien appeared with a steaming cup of herbal tea.
"For your troubles," he said, setting it down.
Angelie blinked in surprise. "Thank you, Damien."
He smiled and walked away.
Flora opened her mouth, but Angelie shook her head.
"Not today," she whispered.

A few days later, Jeffery drove to the place he once called home.
A place that reminds him so much of his mum and growing up. Memories that he will forever cherish.
Amaya spotted him immediately, her face lighting up. "Jeffery, please…"
He walked right past her without a word.
She managed to smile and didn’t push further.
Lucas, lounging nearby, smirked. "Told you, Mum. Stop wasting your time on people who don’t care. Team up with me instead. Let’s bring Jeff down."
Amaya shook her head sadly. "Lucas, he’s your brother."
"Half-brother," Lucas sneered.
“Listen,” she held his hands with passionate eyes, “I don’t want you to hate your brother, whatever games you are planning, end it already.”
“I know you married Angelie to spite him, Lucas, you have to put an end to this madness.”
He carefully removed her hands, pecked her on the forehead, “Have some rest, Mum, I will be late,” and with that, he left.
Jeffery made his way to Morris’s study.
The atmosphere inside was heavy. The air smelled like old books, and something more.
Morris sat behind his massive desk, looking smaller than usual.
“You’re here, son. I thought you wouldn’t come.”
"Here’s the guest list," he said, pushing a paper across the table. "Just a few business associates. I don't know the plans you and Grandpa have made."
Morris scanned it briefly, nodding. "Looks fine."
They discussed Grandpa Lu’s upcoming birthday party, tossing around ideas mechanically, without real enthusiasm.
Jeffery stood to leave.
But Morris's voice stopped him cold.
"Jeff..."
He turned halfway, guarded.
Morris’s voice cracked slightly. "Will you ever forgive me?"
"Would you forgive yourself... Dad?" Jeffery said, stretching the word "Dad" like he needed to lay an emphasis..Without waiting for a reply, he turned and left the study room, the door clicking shut behind him.Morris stared into the thin air, like he was looking at an object. It was easy to put up a strong face for the world, but deep down, the pain cut throught his soul. Watching his son drift further away was like dying slowly. The hospital waiting room smelled like antiseptic and stale coffee. Angelie sat on the cold plastic chair, her fingers clenched around the fraying strap of her handbag. Her eyes hadn’t left the doctor’s office door since he’d gone in with Tim’s latest test results. Her twin brother was down the hall, unconscious again. Pale. Fading.“Angelie?”She stood so fast the strap snapped off her bag. She didn’t even look at it.Dr. Harrow’s expression told her everything before he said a word.“It’s progressed faster than we hoped,” he said gently. “Tim’s kidneys are failing. Completely this time. We need a transplant. Soon.”She blinked. “How soon is ‘soon’?”He hesitated. “Two weeks. Maybe less.”Angelie felt the ground slip out from under her. “We don’t have that kind of money.”“I know. But there’s a donor. A private one. The procedure would happen at St. Nicholas. They can do it quickly if the financial part is handled.”“How much?”“Three hundred and fifty thousand.”She felt like he’d p
Jeffery’s name still hung in the air like a gunshot.Angelie’s fingers stiffened around the hem of her coat. She looked at Lucas, searching his face for a hint of bluff. A twitch. A lie. But he looked entirely too pleased with himself.“You said he wouldn’t be a problem,” she said slowly.Lucas shrugged, shutting the door behind her. “Plans change.”“How soon is he back?”Lucas turned toward the grand staircase, loosening his tie like her presence was an afterthought. “A few days. Three, maybe. Long enough for us to file the license and start making the press rounds.”Her stomach flipped.“You’re pushing this,” she said, suddenly aware of how fast everything was moving. “You want him to see it, don’t you?”Lucas stopped halfway up the stairs and looked down at her. “I want him to know he lost.”“That’s not what this is about for me,” she said, jaw tight. “This is about saving Tim.”He tilted his head. “Then we’re both getting what we want. Isn’t that the foundation of a good marriage?
The words echoed in her chest like a bullet."Jeffery lands on Tuesday."Angelie stood frozen in the hallway, her fingers clutched around the banister, heart racing. Lucas had said it with a smile, like it was good news. Like it was a game. But to Angelie, it felt like the moment everything would fall apart.Tuesday.Three days.Three days before the man she couldn’t forget came back to see her married to his brother. She went to bed that night still wearing the ivory press dress. The zipper caught, but she didn’t care. She sat on the edge of the massive bed in the guest room Lucas had called “temporary,” staring into nothing.Every breath felt borrowed.Every second with Lucas felt like a countdown.Would Jeffrey believe the headlines?Would he see through them?Would he even want to?********Morning came like punishment. Angelie didn’t sleep. She was already awake when Lucas knocked and strolled in without waiting.“Good. You’re up,” he said, sipping coffee. “Big day.”She didn’t a
Angelie hadn’t slept. She’d lain in that enormous bed all night, staring at the ceiling, not blinking, not crying. Just… existing. Her body buzzed like it was on the edge of shutting down, but her mind wouldn’t quit. It just kept playing one line on repeat:Jeffery’s coming.Today.To this house. And he’d see her.In this dress. With that man.A new dress had been laid out for her, ivory again. Almost white. Pretty, expensive. Lucas had chosen it. Probably with a smirk. Because nothing he did was ever neutral. She wore it anyway. What was the point in fighting something you couldn’t escape?**********Downstairs, the house was buzzing with quiet chaos. Her head spun. Her mouth was dry. What time was it?The wine. Last night. She remembered the knock. Julia. The tray. The two glasses. The way Julia hadn’t met her eyes. She remembered one sip. Maybe two. Then, nothing. Her breath caught. She touched her lips, then her chest, then her thighs.A slow chill crept into her bones. She didn’t remember coming to bed.Didn’t remember undressing.Didn’t remember anything after that first sip of wine. Her heart raced. Was it just sleep? They stood there for a moment, longer than necessary, caught in the kind of silence that felt loud. Angelie was the first to glance away, trying to control her breathing. Her heart thumped like a drum in her chest, not because she was scared, but because this man had always had that effect on her.Jeffery broke the silence first. "How are you, Angelie?"His voice was low, but it sounded like a melody to her ears.“I’m good,” she said, voice softer than she intended. But she wasn’t. Not really. She hadn’t been good since the day she said "I do" to the wrong brother. Still, she didn’t want to seem weak, not in front of him.Angelie couldn’t explain the sudden rush of nerves. She felt like sixteen again, standing before her secret crush. Jeffery always had a way of disarming her, reducing her to the shy, unsure girl who once spilled coffee on his expensive suit and blushed for three days straight.“You came to see me… why?” she asked, finally meeting his eyes.Jeffery hesitated for a hea
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to barge in like that. I think I missed my way,” Angelie said, embarrassed, already backing toward the door.Damien smiled, the kind of smile that made you wonder if he practiced it in the mirror. “You must be new here,” he said, his voice smooth and clear, almost like a melody. “Always use your map till you get used to this place. The building can be confusing.”“I forgot mine in my room,” Angelie confessed, adjusting her bag.“No worries,” he said, that calm look never leaving his face. “What’s your room number?”She told him, and without hesitation, he stepped forward.“Come on, I’ll walk you there.”They moved down the hallway together, and a few turns later, they reached her room.Just as Angelie was thanking him, the door flung open, and Damien left.Flora stood there, wide-eyed.“No way! Just how many days and you already got Damien’s attention? Girl, you are on fire!”Angelie rolled her eyes, but made sure Flora didn’t see it. What is it with this g
A girl, about her age, was already throwing daggers with her eyes.“Are you blind, Miss?” the girl snapped, brushing invisible dirt off her outfit.Angelie blinked. “You weren’t looking your way either; that makes both of us blind.”With that, she grabbed her rolling suitcase and continued walking, her head high. A small grin played on her lips. Where did I get such courage? She wondered. Maybe it really does feel good to stand up for yourself. As she dragged her luggage down the hall, another girl about her age caught up with her, her voice light and cheerful.“I love what you did back there,” the girl said. “That’s Sonia. She acts like she owns the place. Totally intimidated by how beautiful you are.”Angelie blinked at her, still trying to process what had just happened.“I’m Flora,” the girl added quickly. “You must be new. And wow, you’re really stunning. Like, runaway model beautiful.”Angelie blushed slightly. She’d heard compliments about her looks before, but somehow hearing i
“Angelie, are you okay?”Jeffery’s voice cut through the tension as he stepped forward. The sound of the cup shattering on the marble floor had drawn his attention. He rushed to her, concern plastered on his face.“I’m fine,” she said quickly, bending to pick up the broken pieces, avoiding his gaze. “I was clumsy. I’ll go now.”She didn’t wait for a reply. She turned and hurried away, the hot tears already clouding her vision. She barely made it to her room before the dam burst. Her hand trembled as she shut the door, leaning against it for support. The tears wouldn’t stop, even though she kept wiping them away, again and again, as if she could scrub away her feelings. On the other side of the hall, Anita smirked to herself. She had seen the look in Angelie’s eyes, and it was satisfying. She had planned it perfectly. Just as Jeffery turned to scold her, she quickly buried her smug smile.“Don’t ever do that again,” Jeffery said sharply. He didn’t wait for her response. He walked away,
Angelie felt like someone had poured a bucket of ice water over her.Her body suddenly felt cold.Tim’s voice stayed calm, too calm. “I was tired of lying down in that hospital bed, just doing nothing. It was getting to me, you know? I was slowly losing my mind. I needed something, anything, to stay connected; I needed to feel alive.”Angelie’s lips parted slightly, but she couldn’t speak.Tim continued, eyes not accusing, just heartbroken. “I got bored watching the ceiling. Tired of the same movies. So, I asked the nurse to bring me a smartphone. I thought maybe I’d scroll a little, catch up on what’s going on. You know I’ve always been a media guy.”He took a deep breath. “And then I saw it.”Angelie closed her eyes.Waiting for him to drop the bombshell she has been hiding“I didn’t want to believe it at first,” Tim said softly. “But it was everywhere, the blogs. The press, pictures. That small wedding, your face, his face. And Lucas… standing next to you.”He looked away, jaw tight
