I urgently approached the elevator, my fingers frantically searching for the button as I tilted my head upward in anxiety.

With a sigh of relief, I blinked at the bright light bulb illuminating the elevator's ceiling. I turned gently and sank weakly onto one side, my heart racing with overwhelming thoughts. My hands instinctively covered my face in despair.

Donovan's son had been incessantly calling for days, and it was disheartening. I couldn't bear the thought of his parents discovering that I had once taken their son away from them. Suddenly, I felt a violent jolt from the elevator, causing me to stumble to the floor.

I grasped the cold steel of the elevator for support, struggling to regain my composure. At last, the elevator came to a halt, but a mechanical voice interrupted the silence, announcing that the elevator's system had been compromised and urging all passengers to remain calm until repairs were made. My eyes widened in disbelief as the words struck me deeply
