Astrid's POV

The whole ride home, I kept peering at Damien under my lashes. He looked as impassive as ever, his eyes focused on his phone, the light reflecting from it giving me a beautiful glimpse of his face. He hadn't spoken to me after what happened at the party, and I was getting frustrated because I now felt like it was my fault.

As we walked into his mansion, I decided that I had had enough. I was going to apologize, although I know I did no wrong. If I were given the opportunity to save someone's life again, I would.

As Damien walked towards his room, my hand shot out to grab his wrist. He turned to me, arching a brow.

I inhaled, the words feeling heavy in my mouth. "I—I am so sorry about what happened at the party. If I had known, I would have chosen a different approach. Please forgive me."

His jaw clenched, as if he was fighting to keep his composure, and he turned away from me.

"Just go to sleep, Astrid. It’s late."

With that, he walked away, leaving me feeling even more frustrated. I stared at his back until he disappeared into his room.

Don’t worry, Mr. Grumpy. You can be angry all you want, but I’m going to gain your forgiveness by all means.

With that, I made a mental note of what I would do to gain his forgiveness.

Before the birds could start chirping the next morning, I was awake, and by the time the sun was up, I was already getting ready to execute my plan. I stood in the kitchen, a broad smile taking over my face. Quickly getting to work, knowing that Damien would be awake soon and might leave for his office early, I prepared the most delicious breakfast I could think of—omelets, toast, tea, scrambled eggs, pancakes.

Soon, Damien's footsteps sounded across the floor as he powerfully trudged towards the front door. He didn’t notice me until I cleared my throat. The minute he saw me, he turned away as if I were some insignificant figure. My heart dropped, and my smile faded from my face. But I’m not giving up. No, not now.

With that thought, I ran towards him, blocking his path with my arms extended. "Damien, please," I uttered, ignoring the annoyed glance he threw my way. "I made breakfast; you should eat before leaving."

"I thought I made it clear to you, Astrid. Do not try to—"

"I’m not trying to do anything," I cut him off. "I just want you to eat. My grandma always said a man shouldn't go to work on an empty stomach when it can be filled. You won’t concentrate, and you’ll make mistakes, and mistakes cause your downfall."

Damien turned to me, his gaze darkening. I took a step back.

Surprisingly, he sighed before walking towards the table and plopping down in a seat. A smile crossed my face. I didn’t expect him to do that.

I stared at him subtly while he ate, trying to get any emotion from his face to show that he was enjoying the food. But no! His face remained stoic. Can’t he just appreciate something?

He soon left for work, and I plopped down on the sofa in the living room, watching one movie after another until I felt it—the craving. I picked up my diary and wrote it down.

Dear Grandma,

Here I am again, missing your favorite boiled corn. I don’t know what you did to make me love it so much. I want to eat it so bad. I just wish I could purchase it, but I do not have the funds, and it is quite expensive in this part of the city as we are no longer on the farm.

I love you, Grandma.

Closing my diary, I set it on the table, rested my head on the sofa, and fell into a dreamless sleep.

Sometime later, I felt a presence in the room, and a looming shadow over me made me snap my eyes open. My eyes caught onto Damien, who was standing by the table, but when my eyes went to what he held in his hands, they nearly popped out. I jumped up, seizing the book and putting it behind my back. I just hoped he hadn’t read through my diary.

"What are you doing? This is private."

He didn’t respond but turned on his heel and walked away.

I opened the book, seeing that he had been reading the page where I had written this morning. Dang it!

I ran up to my room, going deep into my closet and placing the diary far behind the pile of clothes where I was sure no one would get to it. I couldn’t believe Damien would read something like this. Has he no respect for privacy?

About an hour later, I was downstairs watching movies again when the doorbell rang. The maid rushed to the door, and soon, numerous footsteps met my ears. I turned my eyes, my brows drawn together, as five hefty men walked in, each holding what looked like shopping bags.

Startled, I demanded, "Can I help you?"

"We were told to deliver this here by an anonymous person."

I flipped open one bag he extended while the maid took the rest. My eyes nearly popped out of their sockets. "Corn?" I whispered. "Wait, how did you guys know I needed corn?"

"We’re simply doing our job. Now that we have given you the order, we will be taking our leave."

With that, they turned and walked out, leaving me lost in thought. Who would buy me corn? Could it be Damien?

Without thinking much about it, I slipped out of the room and hurried into the kitchen, arranging the ingredients with the help of the maid.

As I was arranging them, Damien walked into the kitchen, no longer dressed in his suit, but wearing sweatpants and a singlet. He still looked like an Adonis in casual attire to me with bulging muscles and his hair messy, some strands falling over his face

He opened the fridge and took out a glass, filling it with wine, then turned to me, his eyes landing on my face before drifting to the corn laid out on the counter. I stayed still.

"You are not a child," Damien suddenly spoke, almost making me freeze, but when he said nothing more, I picked up the knife and began fixing some ingredients.

My heart raced as I looked at him with wide eyes. He resumed speaking as if he hadn’t just nearly caused me to lose my finger.

"If you desire anything, you let me know. I do not like you, but we are married, and I have a duty to provide for you. Do not repeat what you did today. Whatever cravings, although weird they may be..." He pointed at the corn, gesturing toward it, making me frown. "You can always ask me. Understood?"

As much as I did not want to respond, this was his house and his rules, so I nodded. His phone rang, breaking the tension in the room, and he walked out of the kitchen to take the call.

Feeling my muscles relax, I returned to my work, humming a soft tune as I fixed the ingredients. A thought crossed my mind. Could it be that Damien cares for me enough to satisfy my cravings? Could it be that behind that cold and stoic persona is someone who is capable of doing good for others? A small smile crossed my face at the thought. This means I can actually help him overcome whatever has made him like this. That is what I will do, I promised myself, and continued with cooking.

I was almost done cooking when the sound of heels clicking against the tiles caught my attention. I whirled around, catching sight of a woman dressed to impress, her long blonde hair shinier than any I’d ever seen, her legs looking like they could go on forever, and her white figure-hugging dress making her look like a seductive angel. My brows furrowed, my mind buzzing with thoughts of who she could be.

I cleared my throat, my expression one of confusion. "Uh, excuse me, ma’am. Can I help you?" I smiled. She stared at me, something flickering in her eyes that looked like disgust.

"Uh, can I help you, ma’am?" I questioned again when she didn’t answer. She stared at me, a look of disgust crossing her features.

"Who the hell are you?" Her sharp voice echoed. "And what are you doing in my husband’s house?"

Astrid's POVA million questions ran through my mind, a lump tightening in my throat as I stared at the woman standing before me in the kitchen. What had she just said? She was Damien's wife? But I was Damien's wife! Was he polygamous? But that wasn’t part of the agreement."Are you daft?" she shouted, placing her expensive Louis Vuitton bag on the kitchen counter and walking towards me. "Why am I even asking? You're a new maid, right?"I just stared at her, not responding. I didn't come here to deal with rude, stuck-up bitches."As if the incompetent ones here weren't enough already, he just had to add a deaf and mute one?"That hit a nerve, and I couldn't bite back the retort that escaped my lips. "I wish I were deaf so I wouldn't have to hear your voice."Her face grew red, and she stormed towards me as though ready to strike. "Oh my gosh, what is that disgusting smell?"The corn was beginning to boil, so the aroma was quickly filling the room. While it felt enticing to my nostrils

"Take off your shirt," he repeats slowly, as if I hadn't heard him before."I heard you the first time, you shameless pig!" I exclaimed, my face turning red. "I thought you said no affection at home. Now you want me to please you while—""Do not test me, woman. I am not in the mood for any of your stupidity," he spoke through gritted teeth.I opened my mouth, but he didn’t let me speak. "Here," he said, pulling my hand, opening my palm, and placing a bottle in it. "Since you are too proud, take care of your own injury. And don’t come crying to me afterward."I glanced down at the object he placed in my palm. It was an ointment for burns. I bit my lip, awkwardness quickly taking over the atmosphere in the room. He clearly wanted to help me, and I just had to be rude. Great, Astrid! Just great."Uh, I, uh," I stuttered, heat rising to my cheeks. "I’m sorry, I didn’t know you

It took a lot in me to not just make her mine on that kitchen counter.Dang it! How could she turn me on with just a moan. An unintentional moan had me hardening like a rock. It's a good thing I left her presence in time before she noticed my young man acting like a sex-deprived dog.I walked to my bed, positioned in the middle of the room—a king-sized bed big enough to fit

Astrid's POV I paced back and forth in my room, rubbing my eyes as my mind buzzed with thoughts, all geared toward how foolishly I had acted. Why am I so stupid? I shouldn't have run off like a criminal. Now it looks like I was eavesdropping."Astrid," my subconscious mocked, you were indeed eavesdropping."Shut up," I exclaimed, then facepalmed.Great, I was now talking to myself. I think I need to get checked up.The rumbling of my stomach occurred almost simultaneously with the roar of thunder from outside. I walked to the balcony, facing the vast forest in Damien’s backyard. His property seemed to stretch on for miles, even having a small lake within it.I wondered why someone would have this much property when they couldn't even live in all of it. What does he do in this forest? Is he a wolf?I laughed at my own joke.It was almost evening, so the skies were getting dark. Or maybe it was just the impending rainfall threatening its way through the clouds. Either way, I needed to

"I just couldn’t eat all the food so I—""Did you have a party in my house?" he cut me off.A bitter laugh escaped his lips. "So what? You’re already trying to get me riled up?"Why the hell would he think that way? I mean, I knew the kitchen and dining room did look scattered and dirty, but wasn’t he just overreacting?"No, I didn’t," I explained defensively. "I just didn’t want to waste the food, so I told the maids and guards to eat. It wasn't much though." I added, knowing he could be worried about me spending much of his money. His nostrils flared, a low growl escaping his throat. "Excuse me? Damien's POVWith wide eyes, I placed a hand between us, keeping some sort of barrier. “What do you think you’re doing, storming up towards me like that?”“It seems like your legs and brain don’t function properly, right?” he quirked a brow. “So I’m going to carry you.”Carry me? There is no way I am going to let him carry me.“You’re not carrying me. I have legs,” I said, folding my arms against my chest. We held each other’s gazes for what felt like forever, neither of us willing to back down. Finally, I sighed, sagging my shoulders as I walked toward the part of the table I had cleaned.Damien discarded his suit jacket and rolled up the sleeves of his shirt to his upper arms, giving me a perfect view of his toned forearms. The top buttons of his shirt were undone, and I caught a glimpse of his chest—the same chest I had leaned against just a few minutes ago.My heart raced as I stared at him. It wasn’t like I hadn’t noticed before, but now I couldn’t help but admit it: I had marrie

Damien's POVI adjusted the cufflinks of my suit as I walked downstairs to get to work. When I passed by the kitchen, I glanced inside, seeing Myra and two other maids cleaning up the mess from last night. My lips curled up slightly as I realized that Astrid indeed hadn’t cleaned the kitchen—not that I expected her to. For someone who was out to show she could make it on her own, she needed to learn to stand her ground and not let anyone command her. That was the only way she could succeed. I was impressed with her strength and hoped she remained the same.Myra saw me first, and her lips moved. I was sure she was informing the other two of my presence because they turned toward me, bowing respectfully with their hands placed in front of them. Myra, the head maid, walked toward me.“Mr. Starkov, sir, is there anything you would like to have for breakfast? I can make it right away.”“Myra,” my voice came out cold—never intentionally, but still, this is how I have always been since that

Astrid's POVDisappointment hit me like a tidal wave when Damien didn't react as I had expected him to after discovering that I didn't clean up as he had ordered.I was expecting him to be his grumpy self and maybe even raise his voice. Well, I don’t think he’s raised his voice since I came to his house, but that doesn’t matter.I was just expecting him to go out of his way and scold me so that I would be pushed and motivated to stand my ground and tell him that I am not his slave.I am not his maid who he can control and order around. I can't believe he asked me to clean. Just because the maids and guards had a good time?Yes, I was indeed going to clean the kitchen, but the fact that he commanded me to do it made me lose my mind. I decided that I wouldn’t do what he wanted just because he wanted to show that he had power over me.“Ma’am, do you want us to start packing your stuff now?” Myra, who stood in my room with two other maids, asked me in a soft voice. My brows furrowed. “Pac

The night was intense, passion-filled, and as rough as it could get.Eliza would not let me live this down.Stretching, I noticed his side of the bed was empty. It was cold, meaning he had been awake for a while. My heart dropped. Did he leave? My thoughts started racing. I had to be sure.Adrian told me not to let Damien know because he would get really protective, and we would not uncover many truths. I was willing to give it a shot at keeping quiet, and I did hope it turned out perfectly."Are you ready, honey?" Damien asked, wrapping his arms around my waist as he tilted my head to give him access to my neck so he could plant his face there."I am, but can't we just stay at home? Must we go?" I didn't even know where we were going."Yes, we must go because I have something for you."I groaned, letting him hold my hand and take me out with him.Tiffany was fine. Astrid’s POV“What is it again, Adrian? What the hell was that?”He stood up from his seat in the garden and walked closer to where I stood. His hair was slicked back, but he was in a casual outfit, and a black hoodie dangled on his arm.“Astrid, I told you I was going to dig deep into everything, right? I'm pretty sure we are getting close to discovering everything that has been hidden in the shadows for so long.”Adrian beamed, but I couldn't bring myself to smile. No. The picture was disturbing, to say the least."I thought Grandma said she hated Dad. So why are they meeting? And it didn’t look like a picture from long ago, but recently."My mind buzzed but couldn't relax. Nothing was making sense anymore."Well, maybe they have reconciled and fixed their issues, I mean. Damien's POVI rolled my eyes. Now what did she want?"Fiona, how can I help you?"A loud sigh met my ears. "Damien, I thought we agreed to be less formal with each other. Come on, we aren’t strangers anymore."I cringed when I heard her call my name in what she probably thought was a sultry voice. Her desperate tone was evident even over the phone. Having dealt with my sick mother's case today, Fiona was just adding to the headache that was already forming in my brain."Fiona, I'm really not in a good position to chit-chat right now. Is everything okay? Why did you call?""Uh... You don't want to talk to me? Is that it?" she whines, making me groan."That's not the case. I'm just busy. Can we talk another–""No, it's okay," she cut me off. Nobody had the right to cut me off. Only Astrid. "I see now how you prioritize people. It's Astrid, isn't it? You must be with her. Damien's POVI kept watching the clock. Time seemed to have stopped moving ever since she was wheeled into the hospital room. I paced the white corridors, running a hand every so often through my hair. I shouldn't be doing this. I don't care about her.So why was I acting so concerned? No. It couldn't be that I felt for her, right? Not after all she did to me. I promised to never care.Dang it."Damien, maybe you should sit down for a bit. Here, have some water."Astrid's soft voice pulled me from my thoughts. I didn't argue because my legs were already weak and trembling, and I was scared I would faint if I didn't.I sat down, and she sat on the seat directly close to me, placing her soft palm in mine."You really should calm down, okay? I believe she'll be fine. They are the best doctors watching over her in there. So just calm down, and let's wait for the doctor."Her words calmed my nerves just a little bit, enough for me to sit without constantly tapping my feet on the ground.Ab

Astrid's POVEver since Eliza had told me to be careful with Tiffany, I had been on edge in my husband's house. Each time I saw her, I would try to study her subtly and make sure that I could prove Eliza wrong. It was easy to do so because Tiffany didn't show signs of someone who was planning anything. Just like Damien had ordered, she minded her business, only speaking to him when absolutely necessary—not like he responded. The man would remain silent, and when I glared at him, he'd give a one-worded reply, and that would be all.I doubted that she really had something planned. According to Eliza, Tiffany, just a few months ago, had tried to return to Damien's life, but by then, she was still an alcoholic."There is no way someone can change so fast, okay? Don't even think about it. It's not possible. I know this woman—she has reasons for coming here, and you have to be careful not to fall into her trap," Eliza had warned me.Tiffany said she returned because she was dying and wanted

They had visited Luke's favorite island, and while it had been her idea for his birthday, my new best friend didn't seem too thrilled.“I don't get it. What's your problem, Liz? You should have told him you wanted to visit someplace else. I doubt he'd have refused.““Oh, please, Astrid. He wouldn't. I just know how much going there makes him happy. He grew up there, and the orphanage he was raised in is where we spent most of our time.“I rolled my eyes. How could she have been the married one for a period longer than me, yet I was more sensible?“Look here, in marriage, we have to be happy. I know Luke—he wouldn't have gone there if he knew you wanted to go somewhere else. Communicate with him, girl.”“Just like you're communicating with Damien, huh?” She wiggled her brows. “Tell me somethi

It wasn't an everyday thing to have your husband—no, contract husband—tell you he is falling for you.Damien's gaze was intense, making my skin crawl, and my stomach fluttered. When I had joked at the beginning that I would make him fall for me, I didn't think it would be this easy. I mean, I hadn't even started on that aspect yet. I was still thinking of what to do with Fiona and Adrian. How come he's already falling?"Damien, I think you're mistaken, okay? Maybe you think you're falling for me just because you haven't had, you know—"Damien shook his head. "I knew you would say something like this, Astrid. I am not mistaken about this. It is not new.
