Astrid's POV

Disappointment hit me like a tidal wave when Damien didn't react as I had expected him to after discovering that I didn't clean up as he had ordered.

I was expecting him to be his grumpy self and maybe even raise his voice. Well, I don’t think he’s raised his voice since I came to his house, but that doesn’t matter.

I was just expecting him to go out of his way and scold me so that I would be pushed and motivated to stand my ground and tell him that I am not his slave.

I am not his maid who he can control and order around. I can't believe he asked me to clean. Just because the maids and guards had a good time?

Yes, I was indeed going to clean the kitchen, but the fact that he commanded me to do it made me lose my mind. I decided that I wouldn’t do what he wanted just because he wanted to show that he had power over me.

“Ma’am, do you want us to start packing your stuff now?” Myra, who stood in my room with two other maids, asked me in a soft voice.

My brows furrowed. “Pac

Astrid's POVI ground my teeth together, clenching my jaw muscles and fists as I stomped towards the car where the devil sat comfortably, trying to control my life. The driver stepped out and gave me a small bow while opening the door. My brows creased in confusion when I didn’t see Damien inside.“Uh, where’s Mr. Starkov?” I asked, my mind reeling. He had ordered me to join him, yet he wasn’t even here? What the hell?“He will join us soon, ma’am. My orders were to pick you up,” the driver, whom I now knew as Fred, responded before driving through the city. The sun was already going down, casting a soft glow over the hills in the distance. Pedestrians and drivers all hurried to get home before the evening rush hour began. The car swerved to a stop in front of a fancy restaurant.“Are we to meet here?” I asked, but the driver shook his head, his eyes glancing straight into the restaurant. I followed his gaze while asking, “Then why are we—”The words got stuck in my throat at the sigh

Damien's POV"Auntie? Uncle?"I stood by the doorway, my mouth hanging open as I watched my parents ignore me and flash bright smiles at my wife. How did they even know each other?"Mr. Starkov, everything okay, sir?" my parents' chef and housekeeper, Mr. Jeffrey, called out to me. Only then did I notice that they had gone in and left me outside. I shook my head, walking into the house. My parents' house was a cozy three-story building. Anyone who passed by this place would never think of it as the home of a billionaire family. Unlike the elegance and radiant beauty of my own mansion, my parents loved simplicity. They preferred to live in a place that reminded them of their humble beginnings rather than the luxurious lifestyle my money could afford. My mother, Charlotte Starkov, is a gardener, which explains the huge garden located at the back of their home. I think the garden is bigger than the house itself. Meanwhile, my dad, Pedro Starkov, is a retired military officer from Russia.

Astrid's POVOur visit to his parent's home was cut short by Damien's abrupt announcement that we had to leave and attend to a sh emergency in his office. But before then, I had enjoyed spending time with Aunt and Uncle, just like before. They had been my parental figures when I was living with Grandma on her farm, and I'd been so heartbroken when they left. Now reunited, we were, but under the strangest condition. Though they were indeed very happy to find out Damien and I were together. I'd really hate to see their reaction when this charade is over.On this bright sunny afternoon, I was in a car, set to arrive at the airport where we'll take a plane to the Bahamas for our honeymoon.I kept tapping my foot impatiently in the car, glancing out the window and biting my lips to stop myself from asking the driver if we had arrived. I had always heard of Fiona going to the Bahamas and different islands for vacation, at least once every three weeks, and I had always been envious. Now I wa

Astrid's POVMy mind was buzzing with a million questions. What did Eliza just say? Sister? No. I don't believe this."You just said sister. Are you sure you're not mistaken?""I am not making a mistake. I've known them for five years since Luke and I met. She was in high school back then. What did you think she was?"I shrugged, placing my head in my hands. Everything was just too much to handle now."Astrid? Is everything okay?"Glancing at her, I shook my head. "Selena told me she was Damien's wife."Eliza froze, her lips parting with no words coming out for a while. Then, after a few seconds, she chuckled. "Not strange she would say something like that. And you believed her?""What was I supposed to do? She just said it, and I didn't have any arguments to give. My mind was imbalanced all this while, trying to figure out why Damien hadn't told me about her and why he was polygamous."Eliza exhaled, glaring in the direction Selena had stomped off to. "I always found her actions weir

Astrid's POVI couldn't stop my mouth from gaping as the cars zoomed past the bustling city and islands in the Bahamas. I was seated in an Audi—I guess my husband is obsessed with them—while he was at the wheel. My eyes couldn't stop glancing at him often as he sat, leaning back in his seat as he controlled the car with one hand. His shirt clung to his chest and skin, accentuating his broad frame and bulging muscles. His eyes were focused on the road, giving me more opportunities to peer at him beneath my lashes.A strand of his hair kept falling on his face, causing him to keep pushing it off. I gulped, trying to control myself from leaning over and tucking it back into its place. We drove past a sign marked 'Private Property,' and the car rolled to a stop in front of a two-story glass mansion overlooking the blue sea, with its waves lapping at the shore."I need to park the car. Get out." Damien's bored tone pulled me out of my daze. Only then did I notice that everyone else had got

Astrid's POVI stood still, holding my breath as I stared at Damien, wondering what the hell he had just uttered. And how did he even see me when he's all the way inside the villa?"Nothing to say for yourself?" He arched a brow, leaning back in his seat."I have no idea what you mean."He scoffed, shaking his head. "No idea, huh. Not surprising. Let me explain better then."Saying that, he dropped his glass on the table, stood up, and stalked toward me. His eyes were trained on my face, as if daring me to look away. I didn't, although it felt like I was suffocating under his gaze.Only when he got close to me did I avert my gaze to the floor. Damien chuckled and walked past me to face the tall glass windows overlooking the sea. "Come here for a second, Astrid," he ordered, not turning to look at me.I held my ground, rolling my eyes and staying rooted to my spot.Nothing happened for a few seconds until Damien turned, his lips curling at the edges. "Seems like somebody ate a stubborn

Astrid's POVI had been avoiding Damien since morning. My head still throbbed, even though I had slept until one p.m., maybe because I couldn't bring myself to sleep after everything that had happened.I can't believe I just had sex. With my husband. For goodness' sake, we don't like each other. I thought it was a dream, but when I noticed the marks on his back left by my fingers, as well as the hickeys along my skin, plus the undeniable soreness between my legs, I was horrified.Shit. How did I manage to lose control and give myself to Damien? I left his room before he woke up, and since then, I haven't stepped out of my room, which is actually a guest room in the villa.Thankfully, the rest of the family, including Eliza and Luke, left for another house. Something about "leaving the newlyweds to have fun."I remember snippets of the night during the party, but I can't remember how we both ended up in his room and even made love. No. Not love.My stomach rumbled, reminding me to feed

Astrid's POVI have to admit, Eliza is a bad influence on me. I walked sluggishly toward Damien's room. The rational part of my mind was screaming at me to stop whatever I was planning to do. But I was beyond reasoning. That, and the fact that Eliza kept pushing me with motivational quotes until it was getting hella annoying."Eliza, stop. I'm not backing out from it. I also don't like Selena," I whined, but she just shook her head."I know your type, Astrid. You're too kind and will probably pity her if she starts shedding crocodile tears."Rolling my eyes, I turned to her just as we got to the door. "I'm going to do everything as planned, okay? I'll go in and tell Damien that I want to talk to him outside, then when he comes, I'll tell him I want us to spend some time alone. Perfect?"She nodded. "Act shy and tell him you just want to make the media and families happy. Okay?""Yes, yes, now shoo."I cleared my throat, took a deep breath, and walked in, only to halt in my tracks as a

Astrid's POVOh my goodness. I slept with Damien. We did it!My eyes opened to the sunlight filtering in through the window, bright like the joy in my heart. The night was intense, passion-filled, and as rough as it could get.Eliza would not let me live this down.Stretching, I noticed his side of the bed was empty. It was cold, meaning he had been awake for a while. My heart dropped. Did he leave? My thoughts started racing. What if I wasn’t good enough, and he got embarrassed and decided to go home?Oh, come on, Astrid. Maybe he's just somewhere else in the house.Putting on my flip-flops, I walked slowly out of the room and into the living room of the cottage I hadn’t bothered to explore when I arrived.Well, one couldn't blame a woman, right? There were many more things to explore last night aside from a house I'd probably see many more times. His body isn't going anywhere either, my subconscious mocked, to which I flushed bright red.A sizzling aroma hit my nostrils as my ears p

Astrid's POVI believe I was getting really better at pretending everything was fine, maybe because I knew I couldn't risk Damien knowing the plans my grandma and dad had. I had to be sure.Adrian told me not to let Damien know because he would get really protective, and we would not uncover many truths. I was willing to give it a shot at keeping quiet, and I did hope it turned out perfectly."Are you ready, honey?" Damien asked, wrapping his arms around my waist as he tilted my head to give him access to my neck so he could plant his face there."I am, but can't we just stay at home? Must we go?" I didn't even know where we were going."Yes, we must go because I have something for you."I groaned, letting him hold my hand and take me out with him.Tiffany was fine. She had left the hospital a while back, and Damien had done a complete 180 in how he treated her. While he didn't hug her or do what a mother and son would normally do, he was really nice and tolerated her, letting her sit

Astrid’s POV“What is it again, Adrian? What the hell was that?”He stood up from his seat in the garden and walked closer to where I stood. His hair was slicked back, but he was in a casual outfit, and a black hoodie dangled on his arm.“Astrid, I told you I was going to dig deep into everything, right? I'm pretty sure we are getting close to discovering everything that has been hidden in the shadows for so long.”Adrian beamed, but I couldn't bring myself to smile. No. The picture was disturbing, to say the least."I thought Grandma said she hated Dad. So why are they meeting? And it didn’t look like a picture from long ago, but recently."My mind buzzed but couldn't relax. Nothing was making sense anymore."Well, maybe they have reconciled and fixed their issues, I mean. They are mother and stepson, right?" Even my voice sounded unsure by the end of my sentence.Adrian shrugged. Damien's POVI rolled my eyes. Now what did she want?"Fiona, how can I help you?"A loud sigh met my ears. "Damien, I thought we agreed to be less formal with each other. Come on, we aren’t strangers anymore."I cringed when I heard her call my name in what she probably thought was a sultry voice. Her desperate tone was evident even over the phone. Having dealt with my sick mother's case today, Fiona was just adding to the headache that was already forming in my brain."Fiona, I'm really not in a good position to chit-chat right now. Is everything okay? Why did you call?""Uh... You don't want to talk to me? Is that it?" she whines, making me groan."That's not the case. I'm just busy. Can we talk another–""No, it's okay," she cut me off. Nobody had the right to cut me off. Only Astrid. "I see now how you prioritize people. It's Astrid, isn't it? You must be with her. You lied to me about wanting to divorce her."I fisted my hands tight, squeezing my phone so hard I'm surprised it d

Damien's POVI kept watching the clock. Time seemed to have stopped moving ever since she was wheeled into the hospital room. I paced the white corridors, running a hand every so often through my hair. I shouldn't be doing this. I don't care about her.So why was I acting so concerned? No. It couldn't be that I felt for her, right? Not after all she did to me. I promised to never care.Dang it."Damien, maybe you should sit down for a bit. Here, have some water."Astrid's soft voice pulled me from my thoughts. I didn't argue because my legs were already weak and trembling, and I was scared I would faint if I didn't.I sat down, and she sat on the seat directly close to me, placing her soft palm in mine."You really should calm down, okay? I believe she'll be fine. They are the best doctors watching over her in there. So just calm down, and let's wait for the doctor."Her words calmed my nerves just a little bit, enough for me to sit without constantly tapping my feet on the ground.Ab

Astrid's POVEver since Eliza had told me to be careful with Tiffany, I had been on edge in my husband's house. Each time I saw her, I would try to study her subtly and make sure that I could prove Eliza wrong. It was easy to do so because Tiffany didn't show signs of someone who was planning anything. Just like Damien had ordered, she minded her business, only speaking to him when absolutely necessary—not like he responded. The man would remain silent, and when I glared at him, he'd give a one-worded reply, and that would be all.I doubted that she really had something planned. According to Eliza, Tiffany, just a few months ago, had tried to return to Damien's life, but by then, she was still an alcoholic."There is no way someone can change so fast, okay? Don't even think about it. It's not possible. I know this woman—she has reasons for coming here, and you have to be careful not to fall into her trap," Eliza had warned me.Tiffany said she returned because she was dying and wanted

Astrid’s POVEliza was sitting across from me, glaring with her arms folded across her chest while I smiled sheepishly and scrolled through her phone, awing at pictures from their little vacation. They had visited Luke's favorite island, and while it had been her idea for his birthday, my new best friend didn't seem too thrilled.“I don't get it. What's your problem, Liz? You should have told him you wanted to visit someplace else. I doubt he'd have refused.““Oh, please, Astrid. He wouldn't. I just know how much going there makes him happy. He grew up there, and the orphanage he was raised in is where we spent most of our time.“I rolled my eyes. How could she have been the married one for a period longer than me, yet I was more sensible?“Look here, in marriage, we have to be happy. I know Luke—he wouldn't have gone there if he knew you wanted to go somewhere else. Communicate with him, girl.”“Just like you're communicating with Damien, huh?” She wiggled her brows. “Tell me somethi

My female bodyguard asked me."No. I'll just text you if I need you."The guard nodded and stepped back as I straightened my dress to walk into the restaurant. And meet with the devil. Just how stupid could I be?The nerve of this idiot asking us to meet at a hotel. The only reason I came here was for closure, not to hear anything about Damien. I knew he would only try to sabotage Damien and me... because he's jealous of our relationship.Unlucky him. He asked Fiona, right? She can be everything to him. I'm never giving him a second chance."Mrs. Starkov, welcome," the hostess greeted before I could say a word. "Please come this way. I want to try to have something real with you.""Oh," was all I could say. It wasn't an everyday thing to have your husband—no, contract husband—tell you he is falling for you.Damien's gaze was intense, making my skin crawl, and my stomach fluttered. When I had joked at the beginning that I would make him fall for me, I didn't think it would be this easy. I mean, I hadn't even started on that aspect yet. I was still thinking of what to do with Fiona and Adrian. How come he's already falling?"Damien, I think you're mistaken, okay? Maybe you think you're falling for me just because you haven't had, you know—"Damien shook his head. "I knew you would say something like this, Astrid. I am not mistaken about this. It is not new. I have had these feelings for a while, and I have been conflicted and f
