"Starting this day, you are no longer part of this family!"
I trembled in fear as I watched the burning wrath in my father's eyes. My mother was beside him, eyes filled with the same rage, while carrying their little adopted son in her arms.
All my life I did all my best to please them. I did all I could to meet their expectations. I studied very hard at nights just to ace my classes. I did the chores all by myself without a single complaint. I swallowed all the hurtful words they had given me without a word. I accepted all of that for one single reason: because they are my family and I loved them.
"F-Father, please..."
"Get out of my house now, you useless thing!"
From the very beginning, I knew I dissapointed my parents the moment I was born. They were expecting a son who will continue the family's legacy rather than a daughter who was for them—a child that was up for no good. As I grew up, I noticed how different they treated me. Regardless, never did I showed a bad thing to them. For me, it was enough that we were living in the same roof and I could somehow feel their presence as my parents.
But tonight, just with a simple mistake, they chased me out of the house and asked me to never see them again. What did I do? I only gave their little boy his milk with a wrong temperature. It was just too hot, they said. But how would I know if I was doing the right thing or wrong? It was my first time getting a baby's milk ready and I was not given any proper instructions on how to do it.
I looked at my mother with pleading eyes, hoping that she could somehow see the plea and pain on it, and will be reminded that I was their only daughter, their real child that came from their own flesh and blood. But she was ruthless. Her eyed held no mercy as though all she could see in me was a worthless, pathetic trash that was needed to be eradicated.
"Get the hell out of here and never come back, Elena! Once you do, I will kill you myself!"
The last words of my father shook my system entirely. Even though I still hoped to make things right, the fear I was feeling was too overwhelming that I failed to maintain my rationality and just acted upon my instincts.
I ran out of the house, not minding the heavy rain nor the muddy ground. My father's words kept on echoing in my head. I whistled and not so long, a black horse went to me. I was trembling in both fear and coldness as I mounted the horse and reigned it towards the only path I could take, in the deep, dark forest.
A part of my mind was telling me to go back and try to reconcile with my family. But the other part was telling me that if I would go back, my father would end up doing what he said. He would kill me.
The cold rain water mixed with my warm tears. Even I was frightened, I went deep to the dark forest. But not so long after I entered, I noticed something were following me. I turned my head for a glimpse at my back and saw a pack of hungry wolf dogs, chasing me, long teeth out, and eyes blood red.
My heart pounded so loud in panic. My father was a fighter but I was not. He never considered me as his child, so he never bothered to teach me.
My horse was running fastly, but the wolf dogs were fast as well. They were too aggressive and I could sense that they would outrun me anytime soon. By that time, I could no longer run for my life. I could only accept my death.
Sure it was a good way to die. Near my home. Near my family. It was noble, even. What I was fighting for anyway? For survival? But even if I would survive this night, was there even a place I could go? My family that I loved so much disowned me. I no longer have home. I have nothing. So why not just die?
A shriek from the horse and I fell to the ground. Then everything went black.
* * *
Small, unfamiliar voices woke me. When I opened my eyes, the first thing I noticed was the unfamiliar room. Second, the three person at the foot of the bed where I was lying.
"Where am I?" I asked, terrified. I could remember everything that happened clearly. How I was chased out by my family and how I was chased by a pack of hungry wolf dogs down the forest. But as far as I could remember, I fell from the horse. But right after that, there was black. I remember nothing. Was I supposed to be those wolf dogs' dinner?
"And... who are you?" I looked at each one of the three persons. A middle aged man, a younger man, and a middle aged woman. The woman was wearing a long black dress and hair was tied in a simple bun.
"She is fine, Mistress. My job is already done here, so I will now take my leave."
The woman flicked her two fingers in the air as a sign of approval. The man then bowed his head and left.
"What is your name?" the younger man asked. Probably just a few years older than me. Unlike the woman who was all serious, there was a bit of friendly smile on his lips.
"How did I end up being here? I... I was in the forest... I was..." my voice faded midway.
"Chased by a pack of wolf dogs, am I correct?"
My forehead creased at the man. The woman remained still, eyes were boldly scrutinizing me as if she was to see if there was anything harmful with me.
"How did you know that?"
He smirked. "Because I was the one who saved and brought you here."
I could not speak.
"Why were you in the forest at that time anyway—"
"Send her home, Henry. Her family must be searching for her now," the woman said and turned away. She was almost at the door when I spoke.
"I have no family..."
That made her stop.
"No family? What do you mean by that?" Henry asked.
The woman turned to see me. She has that same cold expression, but the moment she stopped to look at me again, I knew she was expecting an answer.
"I..." I swallowed the painful lump in my throat. Thinking about what my own parents did was too painful. "I was chased out by my family. My parents disowned me."
Henry's expression turned to grim. "They did that? For what?"
My tears fell. I looked down because I was ashamed of being so pathetic. I was ashamed of myself.
"I was a disappointment to them since I was born... They wanted a son but they had a daughter and my mother could not give birth anymore after me..."
There was a moment of silence.
"What is your name?"
I lifted my head at once when I heard the woman's cold voice.
"Elena," I answered. "Please, I have nowhere else to go. Please help me, Madame..."
"I'm willing to let you live here," she said that gave hope to my dead soul. "But the question is, are you brave enough to face the consequences of living here in my house? Let me be frank to you, young lady. This is a dangerous place."
How she uttered the last words sent shivers down my spine. But my decision was final. I wanted to live. I wanted to survive to prove to my parents that I was not as worthless as they thought.
"I am willing," I said bravely even my voice was slightly shaking.
"Mistress, she might not—"
"How can I refuse a poor girl who was thrown out by her own family? I gave her an option, Henry. It was her choice."
Then the woman looked at me again. There was no doubt she was beautiful. But her eyes, black as empty darkness, was the incarnation of horror and death.
"Welcome to the House of Spades, Elena. This is the house of assassins, and I am the mistress."
"Elena."I didn't give Henry a glance and continued walking. He stalked me and called my name again. Because of irritation, I threw a dagger at my back without looking."Shit! I almost got hit! What was that for?"I knew he was good enough to dodge that simple attack. He was not Mistress Hera's right hand for nothing. He was also partly my mentor when I was still training way back four years ago."That was for messing my mission, you moron.""Messing your mission? You completed it successfully, so what is the problem?"This time, I stopped and turned to face him. He stood still a foot away, towering over me."You know I like working alone, do you not? I do not need your help. It is my mission, you should have stayed out of the way. If you were bored, you should have searched for someone else you could kill.""I did not mean to provoke you, all right. I was just supposed to watch, but your prey saw me and attacked me. I had no c
"Did you know what guild they are from?" Gideon asked after the invited guests were completely washed out."No traces in their swords and daggers, nor in their bodies. And no one dared to speak.""What guild must be behind of this?" it was from Henry. There many assassin guilds but the biggest and most prominent is ours, the reason why we have a lot of enemies. This did not happen only once that was why we were not surprised of the attack."That is hard to know since we have a lot of enemies," I said before walking out from the group."Where are you going, Elena? We are still in a meeting." Henry is such a nuisance. He really gets into my nerves most of the time."I need to prepare for my mission tomorrow."Before he could talk more, I was already out of the room. The following night, I left the manor before sunset as what I have planned. It was already dark when I arrived at the Dark Valley where the base of Raven pack was sit
I was too dumbfounded to speak. He was the patron? Did he mean he asked for his own death? Worst, he even paid for it!"Are you making a fool out of me?" I asked with my coldest voice. I was very mad already but I could still not free myself from his grip. I was dying to punch him straight to his face."Who is making a fool out of you?"I gritted my teeth. His eyes went down to my lips when he heard the grinding sound. He then smirked and moved his face closer."A little impatient, are we?""I don't know what game you are playing, but if you want a fight, then let's do that! Stop pinning me on this damn bed!""Why would I? I like it this way. The only first class female assassin in House of Spades, under me... on my bed... in my room.""You are really testing my patience, aren't you?""Hmm...""If it's true you are the patron for this mission, then that means you want to die. Why don't you let me do my job?
The sound of urgent footsteps caught my attention. Rage also heard it and looked at the door."A kid's footsteps," I said matter-of-factly. It is easy to identify a kid's footsteps from adult's. "Who is that? Your child?"Rage's eyes drifted back to me. "Do I look like a married man?""Why, are married men are only the ones capable of reproduction?"He grimaced. "Sorry to disappoint you, but your assumption is wrong, woman. I prefer to marry first."I didn't say anything. Why are we suddenly on that topic, anyway? It's not something relevant."Uncle? Are you there?" It was a cute boyish voice.Uncle. So it's his nephew. Rage looked like he was thinking what to do with me.I raised a brow at him. "What are you waiting for? Go to the kid. Don't worry, I won't show myself to him. I don't kill children.""Do you think I don't have any idea what you are thinking? You would escape once I get my eyes off
"What the heck is this thing?!" I stood and tried to push him to prove a point but it was like pushing a huge granite."A werewolf's band. That is the proof that you are under a contract with me.""You told me nothing about this!" I fired, very ready to attack him."I didn't tell you because I was under the assumption that you already knew since I thought you probably gathered some informations about me and my kind before you went through this mission. Why, did you not?"Yes, I gathered informations about him but I didn't go in details. I never had any idea about this stupid contract thing. I thought our deal is just purely verbal!"Explain to me how this thing works, you mongrel," I said sharply. I was close to reaching for his neck and twisting it. Or maybe I could just make his eyes pop out since I don't have the strength to twist his neck."As what I've said, it is the proof that we both agreed to in a deal, like a contract. However, you
"Thought you changed your mind," Rage said playfully when I arrived at our meeting place on the day of our departure."If only I had thought of another way to kill you, I could have changed my mind."He hissed but still smiling. "Honest as always.""I don't lie to make anyone feel better.""Yeah. Sounds like very you.""Now are we not going yet? I don't like chatting with you for long."He shook his head with a ghost of smile on his lips and mounted his horse. "You really don't care if you hurt someone else's feelings with your words, do you?""Do I have to care?"His lips parted in disbelief. I then reigned my horse towards the right way. Rage followed at once and coped up with my pace."You are so heartless.""I don't need to be kind to live." In fact, my principle is the other way around. To kill is to live. That is the only thing I need to do. Why should feel those unnecessary sentiments when all o
"You should rest for the night now. Elena must be tired," Richard Black finally said. I'm very bored of all the storytelling."Right. Let's now go, love?"I looked at Rage. This mongrel never really listens. It makes me want to punch him straight to his face right there and then."Dang, I'm jealous. I really need to find my mate soon," Tyler teased. As soon as I stood, Rage's hand was at my waist at once. I breathed, trying get a hold of myself. I should get used to this for the time being."Have a good night, Elena, Rage.""We will, Grandpa," Rage answered and he then led me out of there."Do you really need to hold me all the time?" I asked irritatedly once we were already inside the chamber. "And why do we need to sleep in one chamber? You should have said that we will be needing two!""Keep your voice low, Elena. Someone might hear you."I hissed and gritted my teeth."Look, as what I have told you
"Why do I have to come with you? You should have done this by yourself!"Rage's grandfather asked him to buy some stuffs in the town for the preparation, and he dragged me with him. I couldn't say no because Richard Black was in front of us."And your grandfather has a lot of subordinates. Why did he have to make his grandson do the job?""It was just an excuse."My forhead creased. "Excuse? What do you mean exactly?""He is thinking that you might want to take a look of the town. He wants us to give alone time together, if your pretty head still don't get it.""Why do we need to have alone time together? We have been together yesterday and last night. Your face is already giving me an eyesore."He winced as if he was hurting. "Your words stung, love."My expression turned grim."Do you really want to die?""If you would be the one to kill me, then it would be my pleasure." He winked. He is not really
Rage's POV"Oh, Elena is here." Jonas pointed to the girl wearing a pale pink dress. She was staring at the piano with her curious innocent eyes. His candle-like fingers traced the space in front of the piano. The amazement was etched on her pale face. Looking down, his long lashes were sharpened. Those have little curls at the end, making her eyes look so soft. Her hair is longer compared to previous visits. Although I heard she's only nine, the way she looks and moves told me she's older than that. Her demeanor was refined even as a child. And she has that paper white skin that I always notice every time it turns to pinkish white, when it's sunny or when from tiredness every time she helps her Mama."She's so pretty, isn't she? I'll make her my girlfriend once she's thirteen or fourteen," Carson said to me immediately."Why don't you prioritize your project? You're not here to fancy a little girl, Carson.""Ow. You sound like you're too ol
"Congrats! Another successful performance!" Luke hugged me at the same time, while Rita was still in tears by our side."You're really good, Miss Elena!”Many more greetings happened backstage. Rose and Brenda, who had a banner before, didn't give up. It wasn't the first concert I had, but it felt like the happiest. Not because there were more spectators, but because they were waiting for me below the stage. When I entered the dressing room, I did not hesitate to find him. He was leaning on the small table, staring at the gifts I received from the fans.I slowed down and stared at him intently. He's now staring darkly at the boxes of chocolates. His brows furrowed, seemed so annoyed at the innocent chocolates."You like
After the show, we returned to the city and Rage took me home. He said he would pick me up at six o'clock tomorrow. Although he assured me that his family will surely like me, that didn't ease my nervousness.I know I have achieved so much. But I still can’t get over the thought that many women are more deserving of him. He's holding two of the companies under their empire, if he chooses a woman in line with his track, he has a partner in management. To think it was easier for him then. It's an advantage he didn't take."Elena, answer me, will you? I've asked a question here before but you don't answer me!" Luke sighed as he followed my movements.I was busy finding an appropriate dress while he was prying around. Of course now that we're on our own he hasn't missed it yet. I'm sure he was very eager to ask me earlier. Only now was given the chance so I wasn’t let go."Are you really? Something happened to you? How was he in your suite earlier
In drowsiness, my eyes warmed as I leaned against his chest. He caresses my hair as silence prevails over us. All happened too fast, I can't help but close my eyes and remember all of it bit by bit. If I wasn't drowning to him before, now I can say I'm drowned, and I might not be able to get up again."I won't go to work tomorrow," he said.I looked up at him, eyes wide. He lifted my head a bit, he adjusted the overlap of my head on his arm. He then snaked his arm on my waist, resting his hand on my hip."It's okay. It's also my last mall show here in Laguna. I'll be back in Manila right after. Just go home tomorrow."His eyes darkened, the reluctance was surely screaming in his head."I don't have important meetings tomorrow. Why can't I skip even just a day? Besides, I can make time for you always. I want to be with you. One more thing, I hope I have a plan for us tomorrow night. Will that be okay? "I looked up at him even more. He crouch
I was busy for the next few weeks. Rage visits me regularly. We can't go out much because my schedule is hectic. On top of that, I also avoid the people so I can’t go to crowded places. I didn't hear any complaints from him, though. I also lost my fear of Lyka because they were already locked up and Rage made sure that they could not get out again.I was shocked when Lyka's mother asked for an appointment with me. He talked to Rita and since it seemed like he had no bad intentions, I agreed. It was true, she didn't mean any harm. In fact, he met with me to apologize for what Lyka had done. She said, it was her fault she didn't guide her enough to be a good person. I said it wasn't his fault. It was Lyka's choice to take the wrong path.We always have a choice to be good or bad. That is not the fault of the people around us. It is our own will to choose what we want. And sometimes, we tend to do things we know could hurt other people."Ma'am, there are flow
When we got out of the car I adjusted the bag on my shoulder before facing Rage. "Don't go up. I can go alone from here," I told him and pointed to the elevator.I noticed that the security of the whole building was tightened even more, and even here in the car park the guard increased."I'll walk you to your door," he insisted.I bit my lower lip subtly and just nodded to avoid an argument. If I contradict him, the conversation will be long. And I am still embarrassed of how I confessed earlier at his penthouse. I can't believe I had the guts to say that to him. And when I remember his reaction it was like someone was drumming in my chest. I've never seen him that surprised... and genuinely happy."Is Luke already inside?" he asked as we confessed to my unit.I nodded. “Maybe already asleep...""Okay. Get inside," he demanded softly.I nodded. "Are you going back to the penthouse?""No. I'll sleep at home first because D
Elena’s POVWe used the chopper to go back to the city. At the helipad of the MG building the chopper landed, and I didn’t expect who were waiting for me there. Luke, Rita and Rose were there. As well as Georgia and Zoren. But what surprised me was to see who was on the side of the five of them."Livius..." I whispered under my breath."Put this on," Rage said and handed me his black coat.I nodded and put it above my sleeveless dress. She helped me fix my wind-blown hair before we approached the waiters."Elena!" Luke's voice can surely break walls. He couldn't wait any longer. He met me halfway and hugged me tightly."I'm glad we met again! It's finally all over! I missed you so much, K! You worried me so much too!""You made us all worry, Elena. I just found out everything that happened yesterday. Why didn't you tell us? Mommy and I could have helped you," Georgia said.I let go of Luke's hug and faced them. My e
Rage’s POVI can feel my hands slightly trembling. Fuck. Why does she have to hurt me over and over again? She's the only one who can hurt me like this. Only her. But why does she keep on hurting me?Confused and pained, I followed her steps. I gently touched her arm once calling her name. She faced me with anger in her eyes. She violently removed the arm from my grasp."What? Didn't you hear me? I said, go out! Get out!""Why are you doing this to me?" I asked weakly. She told me she'll visit me on my office. But he did not come. Worst, she was nowhere to be found. I'm very worried. I even ditched my meeting with a foreign supplier and canceled the rest of my appointments because I was busy searching for her for the last six fucking hours! Then can I reach him like that? Kissing the bastard that was beaten up? She didn’t know how dark my vision was when I saw them in that position! For the first time in my life, I felt like I ca
I gasped a few times as I stared at the sea. I don’t know what came to mind and I went here in El Fuego. But I don't have anywhere else to go. Well, not literally. I mean I couldn't think of another place to go. Maybe because my mind is clouded with the things that’s going on so I can’t think clearly.I'm angry, that's the truth. I am angry at what is happening in my life. Yesterday, everything was okay, I was happy. But suddenly all of these shits happened. Seriously? Don’t want to stay happy with me? I'm not doing anything wrong, ah? Why doesn't destiny want me to be happy? Am I a cruel person? I know I'm not that good. But I also know that I'm not that involved. So why is this? Why do I have to shed tears over and over again?"Crying won't make you look pretty."I looked at the person speaking next to me who I didn’t even realize was approaching me. Recognizing who it was my jaw dropped in shock. It's been years since I last saw
