Chapter 31

Liam's POV.

"Are you insane? Huh?" Grace scowled as she looked at me.

"How did you expect me to know that that scoundrel would be there?" I snarled as I looked at her.

"Is this how you intend to rule our family some day? Is it?" She fired back at me as she got up from the sofa chair. "What if you have gotten Pedro killed? You said he is an Alpha, an Alpha you know nothing about and yet, you went ahead to lay an ambush on the one woman he told you not to dare lay your hands on before?" She growled angrily as she looked at me.

"I will make him pay for this, mother. I will." I said in defense as I looked at her.

"How? Pedro is still trying to recover from the alpha's mark. One thing you must understand is, whenever an Alpha, who happens to be powerful, marks you, it's either you die or you suffer the unending torment until you recover from it. That could take weeks and even a month, Liam." She growled angrily.

"Then let father make me an Alpha. He is already of age, mother. If he passes down his Alpha's blood down to me, then I will get more powerful, mother. I will be able to defend myself from that scoundrel who keeps getting in my way." I shrugged coldly as I looked at her.

"Don't tell me you are going to take father's side in this one, mother?" I scowled angrily and painfully as I maintained eye contact with her.

"You have to be patient. You have to prove that you deserve the power of an Alpha son. You can't be this reckless and expect to rule. This? Our pack? Our family is an organized pack and if you don't get to prove that, the power of the Alpha may fall in the hands of Julian or even, Rafael, your cousins. You have to take up responsibility, Liam." She scolded disappointedly as she stared at me.

"You are no longer in high school, Liam. You need to take responsibility unless someone else would." She sighed as she looked at Pedro who left a groaning sound as he woke up.

"How do you feel now, Pedro?" She asked as she walked down to where he laid.

"I am getting better, Mrs. Grace." He responded with a smile as he turned to look at me.

I frowned as I looked away. I couldn't watch him go through the pain. I caused it all and there was no way I was going to feel alright until he recovered fully from the scratch.

"How could you be that reckless? You are his beta and is this how you plan making sure he protects this pack?" She scowled as she frowned.

"I'm sorry, Mrs. Grace. I will do better next time to keep him in check." He responded in a calm tone.

"Mother?" I snapped. "Can you not start now? I am not a kid anymore. We can both take care of ourselves." I sighed as I forced a smile. "You will be fine, Pedro, you definitely will." I assured him as I brushed my hand through his hair.

"Then next time, before you do something as crazy as this, you better think thrice." She scolded as she picked up her handbag.

"I spoke with the doctor. He said you will be discharged during the weekend, so until then, don't stress yourself and let the doctor and nurses do their thing and Liam, you better watch him closely too and make sure he is safe because if the Alpha finds out that he is still alive, he might decide to either initiate Pedro into his pack or kill him to end his misery." She mumbled as she turned to leave.

"I thought you said he would be discharged this weekend?" I queried as I looked at her.

"Yeah, but that doesn't mean he won't still feel weak and also the sharp pains that come with it. But before the next two weeks, he should be free from the poison that comes with a powerful Alpha's claws. You both are lucky he never used his fangs, by now, we would have been arranging for your burials." She scoffed before walking away.

"Darn it!!" I cursed, trying to ease up my mind.

I crashed down on the sofa as I couldn't stop thinking about him. “If he is a powerful Alpha, then that means he is not from here. So, why is he interested in the lady? What is he doing in New Kingston? Is he coming to seek territory?” I groaned at my last option.

“Hell no!! I have to get rid of him before he begins claiming territories.” I cursed as I looked at Pedro who had fallen back to sleep.

“Someone sent these.” One of the nurses stepped in with a bouquet of flowers and two cans of coffee.

“Who?” I looked at the card and it seemed like it was from Ophelia, his fated mate. “Oh! Crazy.” I chuckled as I saw her name written at the back of the card.

I dropped them till he was awake and then, we drank the coffee together. We had a brief discussion and I felt my body getting weak. “What's happening to me?” I groaned as I clenched my stomach as I fell to the ground on my knees.

“Liam? Liam? Can you hear me, Liam?” I heard his voice faintly as I struggled to stay awake but then, it was difficult in this condition. “Why would she poison my drink?” I gasped as I choked.

“No!! No!!”

I opened my eyes as I saw a manly figure who was completely dressed in a black hoodie press Pedro's face with a pillow. I watched Pedro struggle but then, I couldn't get back on my feet.

The manly figure turned as he looked at me but then, my vision was blurry. I saw him grin as Pedro laid dead on the floor now.

He had elbowed the side of my face as I blacked out immediately.
