SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO.

A bubbly house. Last-minute preparations and the familiar yearly rush.

A young girl giggled as she hurried past a pair of busy maids and made her way into her bedroom. Shutting the door securely behind her, she packed up her curly black waves into a ponytail and headed straight for her wardrobe.

It was the sixth of June and every sixth of June marked the wedding anniversary of the Chantel Couple. Her parents.

For this year’s anniversary, the six-year-old had prepared the most thoughtful present. She knelt on the floor to pull out a box that she had hidden away from the watchful eyes of her elder brother, Lucas, and the Chantel household maids.

Bang!

An unusual sound from someplace in the house made her hurry. Were they starting the fun already without her?

She carried the brightly wrapped up box from the floor and gave a last-minute check to her appearance in the mirror.

For the occasion, she had worn a matching dress with Sofia Chantel, her mother. It was a green flowing dress that greatly complimented her green, jade-like eyes, a proud feature that she had inherited from her father, Davon Chantel.

“Elena!.”

The sudden knock on her door made her sigh. It was one of the maids.

“Hurry out now, Elena!.”

“I’m coming, Genevieve!.”

As the sound of receding footsteps got more distinct, Elena Chantel grabbed the gift box and headed for the door to join the rest of her family in the dining hall.

Her fluffy slippers didn’t make a single sound as she walked and the caress of the cold evening breeze on her skin made her get goosebumps.

It was clear outside with not a single staff in sight.

As Elena approached the family’s large dining hall, a familiar body lying unconscious on the floor in the distance made her heart beat faster.

“Genevieve?.”

Elena set the box aside to kneel beside the maid. It was Genevieve alright but why was she out there passed out on the cold floor? She nudged Genevieve’s shoulder to wake her up and almost screamed when the maid’s body turned over. Blood!

Is she… dead?.

A voice screamed in the distance and Elena jolted from the floor with trembling hands.

Something was wrong…

“Lucas?. Mommy?. Daddy??!.” Elena yelled and forced her legs to move faster.

As she approached the hall, more familiar bodies lay on the ground. Maids and servants, the butler, even her nanny! Elena covered her mouth to stifle her scream.

Her parents!

She ran into the hall and her eyes widened in horror at the grim sight before her. A body lay not far from where she stood, the familiar dress on the body, a matching set with hers.

The little girl’s eyes welled up with tears as she recognized the body of her mother.

“Elena..” A familiar hoarse voice called from a distance.

Davon Chantel dragged his body with the last strength that he had. He was losing blood fast. His daughter’s little legs moved on their own accord and she ran to him.

Elena’s large green eyes were filled with tears and her voice trembled as she spoke. “Father… Mo..ther…”

A tear slipped down Davon’s cheek. He was barely hanging on to his life from the gunshot wound close to his heart. He grabbed his daughter’s trembling hands in his. “Find your brother… Find Lucas!. I’m so..rr..y Elena. I couldn't… protect you all from him…”

Elena screamed when her Father’s hands slipped off hers. Lifeless. Gone.

“Daddy no!!!. You can't leave!!. Come back!!!..”

Elena's hands regained their strength as she shook her father's body vigorously. She needed him. Lucas needed him. How could he think of leaving them?

“Daddy!!!.”

“It's futile, child. He’s gone.”

At the sudden words, Elena’s anger reignited. She turned to the direction of the voice.

At the entrance of the dining hall, a middle-aged man leaned against the doorway with a finger-sized cigarette clenched between his fingers. Four scary-looking men flanked him on both sides.

Elena’s eyes zeroed in on the man in the middle. The smoke from his cigarette was getting to her. He looked like a bad man…

“Did you kill my parents? Where’s Lucas? Did you take my brother? Are you here to take me too?. I WON'T LET YOU!.”

Sizing up the little girl who was barely a teenager and still very much a child, the man left his men behind and moved closer to Elena until he hovered above her.

Up close, Elena shivered. The man had a long hideous scar running down his left cheek. Although she was tempted to make a run for it. Elena’s pain made her stand her ground as she stared right back at him defiantly.

“Elena Chantel.” The man started.

His rough hands held her jaw gently as he continued. “I have no reason to kill your parents. Your father owes me a large chunk of money and I’m only here to get it back.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed. “I don't believe you. If you didn't kill my parents, then who did?.”

The man chuckled at her words.”I’m Lazarus Russo girl, I’m no petty man. You can trust me.”

The little girl swallowed as she glimpsed at the men behind Lazarus Russo. Her parents had a lot of properties and she could sell off a few of them to give back the money they owed. But this man looked like he was capable enough to help her out.

“If I return the money my parents owed to you. Would you help me find Lucas and the people who killed my parents?.” Elena proposed.

The men behind Lazarus exchanged meaningful glances amongst themselves as they looked from the child to their boss.

Lazarus frowned. He had heard a lot about Davon Chantel’s children, especially this girl who wasn't afraid to strike a deal with him.

Elena’s green eyes remained fierce and determined and she didn't blink once as she waited impatiently for a response to her question.

“I’m not sure how you plan to pay me back, girl. Your parent's properties are only worth a tenth of their debt’s percentage.”

What?!

Elena’s confidence faltered. Her parents owed that much money to this man?

“But..” Lazarus drawled, his lips curled up as he stared at Elena’s brave face.

“If you want revenge, I would offer it to you on a platter of Gold. In return, I will take you under my wing until you pay back your debt.”

For a second, Elena’s face lifted with hope. It looked easy… but was it truly?

“So what would it be, Jade eyes? Do you still want revenge or not?.”

Elena turned to stare at the center of the room where her parent's bodies lay. Her eyes clouded up with tears as her father’s last words to find her brother resounded in her ears. Today was meant to be a special night. Rather, they had taken her parents away from her.

It took a while to respond, but her decision remained the same.

“I want revenge.”

~JADE~You know if I ever got a second chance at life, I probably wouldn’t do this.I wouldn’t be in one of the finest clubs in Rotana with my feet in dumbass six aching inches stilettos and rib-cracking corsets. I wouldn’t risk my twenty-three-year-old life by planting a recording chip underneath the table of one of the wealthiest men in the city while I danced to the slow beat of the music in the room. Most of all, I wouldn’t make the mistake of letting him catch a flirty glimpse at my exposed cleavage as I delivered a closing bow to my three-men audience and retrieved the chip.Unless this wasn't a second chance at life. This is real, and I’ve just succeeded in attracting the most unwanted attention from my target, a spoilt third-generation heir.“Hey Jade, It’s clear over here! ~JADE~I was not fond of Crystal. At least not like I was with the rest of the girls. Crystal was new and she had joined us much later so I never really bonded with her.But she was one of my girls…My hold on the helm of my gun tightened as I stared from Lazarus to the unwelcome visitor. From the relaxed look on Lazarus’s face, it dawned on me that he knew who this visitor was. This visitor killed Crystal before our eyes…, and Lazarus had allowed it.For whatever gain?“If you needed to punish anyone for failing this mission, it should have been me. Not her!.” I gritted the words out to Lazarus as I stared daggers at the two men by the door. “You put me in charge of securing the chip and I failed, that was totally unnecessary!.”Silence.Lazarus’s face remained calm and indifferent. All the words I uttered had fallen on deaf ears. Rather, he stared at the men by the door and tapped his cane impatiently on the floor.“You mean… this chip?.” A smooth voice expressed and I frowned to se

~JADE~We were quiet on the drive back home, probably because Marcel, Vincenzo’s right-hand man, was behind the wheel and had insisted on delivering us to our dorm. But I knew he didn’t give a fuck about us and was only keeping an eye on us for Vincenzo.Pearl retched the instant we got in and Ruby followed after her to calm her down. When they returned, Pearl was hysterical and sweating heavily.“I can’t do this anymore.” She announced and kept pacing about the room. “I can’t keep pretending that everything and everyone around here is sane!.”“Did you see what they did to Crystal tonight? For fuck sake that could have been any of us!.”I shut my eyes tightly as Pearl’s voice rose, and then I waited until her words melted into the background.“I’m going to bed first,” I said and stood up. Ruby nodded, but Pearl scoffed.“Yeah.. run away, Jade. Run away and pretend that everything is fucking fine like you always do!.”I ignored Pearl and walked away. As I got to my room, I rushed to t

~JADE~“Strip.”“Come closer to me.”That commanding voice……Like a strong magnet, It pulled me in and I found myself seeking its source. I knew I was intruding. My instincts screamed for me to retreat and step back to a safer zone, but I was too far gone. I walked further into the room and met a stunning sight. On a king-sized bed at the center of the dark room lay a stark naked woman. She remained stuck in a sensual pose, like a model in a Playboy magazine. In front of her was a man who I figured had spoken earlier. His sturdy back was turned to me, but his fluid hand worked elegantly on a canvas in front. Retreating should have been extremely easy, but the model was staring straight in my direction. Her eyes widened the instant she sighted me. She lost composure and hurried off the bed, then scrambled hastily for the pieces of her dress. From the white and black cotton uniform in her hands, I realized that she was a maid in the house. The artist’s fingers immediately paused. “I’

The large clock in the room ticked proudly from second to second, laying the weight of the thick silence on our shoulders as we waited awkwardly for the staring contest to come to an end.I couldn’t take my eyes off Eva Axton. Sweetheart-shaped face covered with pronounced makeup, golden blonde hair, and tight-fitting clothes. She was at most fifteen and was already at the peak of teenage rebellion. Angel’s deep eyes were squinted and I wondered what was going on in his mind as he stared at his niece. It was obvious that Eva had angered him greatly and I was curious to know how he planned to punish her.The offender in question was staring back at her guardian with equal intensity and no ounce of guilt in her stance for her misbehavior. Disappointingly, the expected scolding didn’t come. Instead, Angel took a deep breath and broke the silence. “I already have enough on my plate without your foolishness, Eva. Cross me one last time and we will have a rethink about schooling altogethe

~ANGEL~The unfinished work on my canvas was far from perfection but I had thought of a last-minute remedy. The back door creaked, but I kept my eyes on the art. Drawing provided me with an escape that nothing else could offer. It soothed my troubles and gave me peace, it was all I needed at the moment.“Mr. Axton.” A timid voice called and I knew it was the maid. She had let herself in and approached me. “Strip. Come closer to me.” I instructed, my eyes still glued on the canvas. I had to get exactly what was missing and the addition of a real-life figure to the hue of colors may just account for a thrilling finishing touch. The maid obeyed without another word; she stepped out of her uniform, remained naked, and got on the bed. Then she inched closer to me and struck a position that made me frown. Her presence was perfect, but her stance… not exactly. I needed something closer to wild, yet subtle; a commanding position not a seductive prey.I was just about to make my point pract

~JADE~I was awake long before the knock came. Eva Axton was not only a nuisance to my mission but also a pest to my sleep. “Kim?.” My brows lifted to see the Asian maid outside my room so early in the morning. “I’m sorry. It's Mrs. Lopez. She asked that you get ready and come downstairs as soon as you can.”Eva’s escaping figure the night before flashed before my eyes and I swallowed and tried to fix the maid a smile.“Is everything alright?.”“I think you have nothing to worry about,” Kim reassured and turned away just as swiftly as she had come.I freshened up and made myself presentable in jeans and a lilac V-neck fitted top, then made my way to the common room where Mrs. Lopez was already waiting. “Good day, Mrs. Lopez. You called for me?.”The housekeeper’s eyes narrowed as they took in my outfit, then she gave a tight smile and handed over a package. My brows lifted to realize it was a new phone.“I have a phone, Mrs. Lopez.”“It’s a work phone.” She explained. “You have a

~JADE~My lungs begged to stop and take a break, breathe in some air, but my feet had a will of their own.I ran after the security guard, into the school’s control room and shifted on my feet repeatedly as the guard fetched for the footage that had captured Eva getting hauled into a black van just in front of the school’s entrance by men in full black outfits, approximately forty-five minutes ago.I wondered how they had managed to get through the checkpoint at the gate without suspicion but another guard hurried in with the report that the security men at the gate were knocked out and still unconscious.“How could you all let this happen?!.” Principal Dwyer scolded the men, but their sluggishness was starting to get on my nerves.“We don't have the time for this.” I pointed out and did a rewind of the CCTV footage to have a better look at the van. The vehicle had moved fast, but I was able to pause the video at an almost blurry angle where the plate number was readable.“Call the po

The tiny hairs on my arms rose as I became increasingly aware of how cramped my position was. Still wrapped around Salvatore’s huge form, moving my poor head around was a tug of war. “Hey, let me go.” I blurt out, unable to remain still. A minute more in that position would have somebody calling for an ambulance.“Sorry,” Salvatore muttered absentmindedly while taking a step backward to create breathing space. His eyes wandered to the entrance again. He looked slightly shocked, and I wondered why. Following his line of sight, my heart starts to pound strangely. Angel was truly here, in the shooting range, and it appeared Salvatore wasn't the only one surprised about his sudden appearance. The soldiers stood still for a slow second as if a witch had cast a don't move spell and in the next second, all hell broke loose.“Angel Axton. In the flesh!”“I can't believe it.”Angel’s normally tight face broke into a wide grin as he shook the men merrily. They exchanged pleasantries like they

“I gave you twenty minutes, it's twenty-one now.” Even over the phone, his voice is husky and deep.“You can't order me around, Angel...”“A proper good morning—what are your plans for the day— ha, and a ‘could you make out time to join me at the studio this morning— would be proper now, don't you think?” There's a moment of silence. I could feel his irritation, and I couldn't care less.“Where are you, Elena?” My hands strayed to my hair, and my lips turned up at the sides as I worked up a curl. I looked around the kitchen, Kim and Ursula were back to work, bringing out fresh ingredients to deliver Salvatore’s order. “Heard your family has a shooting range, how come I never knew that before now? Well. Salvatore was kind enough to invite me. Guess I’m gonna have to stick with your brother for a little longer…” I added and ended the call.~We were in the first of three cars and were en route to the family armory which was at a considerable distance from the main house. In 20 minutes. My eyelashes fluttered at the sudden pop-up message on my work phone, knowing exactly who the sender might be.“A raspberry- peach- mango smoothie bowl for you, ma’am.” Ursula’s lively voice sang. My eyes widened as the most colorful bowl of breakfast I had ever eaten in my life was placed in front of me. It was my only day off work in the week, but I’d decided I would be spending it at the mansion, to the girls’ delight. My stomach growled in appreciation. Smoothies were Ursula’s specialty and Kim had insisted I try it out at least once the instant I stepped into the kitchen that morning.I wrapped my hands around the bowl and admired how aesthetically pleasing every single ingredient was. “So—Elena?” Kim started to say, Ursula shook her head, and I raised my brows at the two curiously.“What’s up?”Ursula sighed, sending Kim a look that said ‘You should have just shut the fuck up. “You know after that dinner last night, everyone’s been talking

My eyes flicker as I sense the presence of a secondary existence.I clapped twice, wincing slightly as the bright light illuminated my dark room.“You almost had me fooled there, brother,” Salvatore said from behind.Raising a brow, I turned to see him sitting by my patio with a wide grin on his face. My favorite bottle of whiskey was uncorked and he drank directly from it.I wasn't at all surprised that he had invaded my space once again. I half expected to meet him there. Sneaking into each other’s room was a bad habit we had developed as kids, and it seemed we would not be outgrowing it anytime soon.I feigned ignorance as I undid my watch and laid it down carefully. “I thought you were heading to bed?”He chuckled and rose to his feet with the bottle in tow. “You failed to include in your messages that the new nanny was t

~JADE~“You are fired!”~I could feel the pressure of Eva’s anger and for a brief second, I glanced at Angel’s cool and undisturbed face opposite me. If he had heard Eva’s declaration, he showed no sign of being offended. Even in the heat of the moment, he was still picking up dishes from the numerous servings on the table to his plate. My employment had been demanded by Angel Axton, so technically, he was my boss. The knowledge released a small weight from my shoulders but also added another. What if Eva could still fire me despite that? Was it possible? Did she have the authority to?What would that mean for my mission, revenge, and ultimate plan to retire? No. I couldn’t mess this up. I had to remain here no matter what. Nervously, my fingers wrapped around each other beneath the table. My gaze wandered from Angel to Salvatore. Unlike his younger brother, Salvatore was slightly taken aback. He looked up at his niece strangely; as if he were seeing her for the very first time.

~JADE~Don't look, Elena. Don't.Despite the heat from the burning embers of coal in the lit fireplace, the tiny hairs on my arms were high on alert. I shivered at the slightest breeze, knowing fully well why the air suddenly felt so stuffy. No one wanted me at this table. Not Eva, who was currently glaring at me as she stabbed her steak a little too hard, or Zeta who had found a way to be so close to Angel that their seats were almost touching. My fingers cradled the glass of champagne on the table and just when I had finally gained control of the situation, my eyes betrayed me and I met his gaze. His beautiful deep blue eyes were dark and the slightest smirk made his lip curl as he stared from my face to the napkin his brother had passed to me a few seconds ago. Unlike most families who preferred to eat quietly, I found the Axtons did dinner quite differently. The conversation at the table had danced through Eva’s performance in school, to the family’s legal business which had be

In my head, a thousand thoughts collided. How was Salvatore Axton here? When did he arrive? Wait. How does he know my name?!“You’re Elena, right? Eva’s new nanny.” He spoke again when the silence lingered, breaking me out of my thoughts. “Yes,” My brows lifted, fingers tight around the handle of my bag. “and you are?..” Better to pretend to be clueless. I didn’t want to be thought of as a stalker.“My bad.” Salvatore Axton laughed lightly. His right hand rubbed on the exposed part of his tanned, chiseled chest, where three buttons of his body-hugging, black shirt had come undone. I swallowed as I took in his appearance. Just like his brother, Salvatore was built handsomely. He had dark brown hair, wavy and full, eyes that were a lighter shade of blue compared to Angel’s deep ones, and a chiseled face that could make anyone rush to do his bidding. The fact that I had to crane my neck a little just to get a good look at him made me sum up his height to at least a six foot three. Hi

~Jade~ Stepping into the crowded school cafeteria, I found Zeta. She was settled on one of the tables and eating without a single care in the world. Her eyes which had a shiny look in them squinted the moment I stepped in front of her. Sending her a sharp look, I tried to contain my irritation at how calm she was, as if there wasn't a volcano waiting to erupt somewhere.., “Where’s Eva?.” Zeta continued munching on French fries, her words flowing easily. “Don’t beat yourself up nanny, Eva’s just making up with her friends... ” She then pressed her lips together, smacking loudly before picking up another fry.“You should have stopped her!.” I snapped, wondering just how dumb the woman could be. Angel might have let the kids out on bail, but the hostility they exuded whenever they ran into Eva was enough to know what terrible choice of friends they were. “They are not her friends.” I corrected. Figuring out I would be wasting my time explaining anything to Zeta, I let my eyes

~Jade~By Monday, I’d made a long list of things I hated about Angel Axton. He was condescending, arrogant,… annoying. If I were to nanny him up instead of his mule-headed niece, I would get started with a lesson or ten on basic manners. Ursula dropped a tray in my waiting hands, distracting me from my thoughts. I furrowed my brows at the two tall glasses of fruit drink with ice cubes placed on the small tray. One for the brat, the other for the ex.I could get it that Eva had requested I fetch her a drink, but why did I have to wait on Zeta too? The sound of their laughter floated down the hallway. I fumbled between balancing the tray on one hand and adjusting the falling strap of my bag on the other hand. “Finally..” Zeta’s feathery voice sang as she stood up hastily from the leather couch. Her tight nude gown clung to her like a second skin. I sucked a sharp breath in as she picked a glass off the tray without warning, almost knocking down the tray if not for my quick reflexes.
