~JADE~

We were quiet on the drive back home, probably because Marcel, Vincenzo’s right-hand man, was behind the wheel and had insisted on delivering us to our dorm. But I knew he didn’t give a fuck about us and was only keeping an eye on us for Vincenzo.

Pearl retched the instant we got in and Ruby followed after her to calm her down. When they returned, Pearl was hysterical and sweating heavily.

“I can’t do this anymore.” She announced and kept pacing about the room. “I can’t keep pretending that everything and everyone around here is sane!.”

“Did you see what they did to Crystal tonight? For fuck sake that could have been any of us!.”

I shut my eyes tightly as Pearl’s voice rose, and then I waited until her words melted into the background.

“I’m going to bed first,” I said and stood up. Ruby nodded, but Pearl scoffed.

“Yeah.. run away, Jade. Run away and pretend that everything is fucking fine like you always do!.”

I ignored Pearl and walked away.

As I got to my room, I rushed to the toilet and retched, letting out all the vomit. Then I got into the shower and let the water calm my rage. Crystal’s death had gotten to me.

But when you grow up with a man like Lazarus Russo, witnessing death was expected to become an everyday thing.

Not to me.

The image of mother’s open, lifeless eyes on her wedding anniversary night still haunted me. My father’s dying words remained fresh in my mind as if they had only been spoken yesterday.

I had not given up hope of finding my brother; but, I cannot face Lucas until I presented the heads of my parent’s murderers to him on a silver tray.

3:15 A.M.

A beep from my phone woke me up from a regular bloody dream. I checked and saw that it was a notification from Marcel;

“Get ready. They will pick you up.” The message read. Beneath it was a downtown address. I smiled because I knew the game was on. If taking this mission meant that I could finally get the revenge I craved, then I was one step closer to finding Lucas.

_____

Pilot. Bartender. Pole dancer.

I have been way too many things to too many people for as long as I can remember. Mixing drinks with just enough lethal doses to take out a hundred people or taking control of an airplane in full transit.

They were easy tasks. My type of tasks.

But here I was, in a tiny makeshift apartment arranged by Vincenzo to play my part as a damned nanny.

Waiting…

I glanced at the noisy wall clock in the corner which still managed to tick despite its terrible state and I frowned. What the hell was taking so long?

The anticipated rap came a minute later and I hurried to get the door. Outside, a well-bodied, suited man stood. His stern eyes swept over my outfit and he frowned with a hint of uncertainty in his gaze.

“Hello.” I greeted.

“Good day. I’m here for Miss Elena Chantel. I’d assumed that this is the right address...”

“That’d be me,” I confirmed and wheeled a box that contained my personal effects out. I smiled and looked up at him expectantly as I offered my hand. “I'm Elena Chantel, from the agency. I'm guessing you work for the Axtons? The agency sent a notice that they would send someone over to get me.”

He nodded reluctantly but didn’t take my hand. Instead, he glanced at my luggage. “And your phone?.”

“Kept behind as instructed,” I confirmed and the bodyguard finally relaxed.

“Great. Please come with me.” He said and turned away.

I studied the roads as we moved and let my eyes have their fill while my senses worked. Growing up in Rotana had made me map-wise and I knew every area in the city like I knew the lines on my palm… except this road.

It was separate from town and would be a dead end on the map; but it went on and on, past the rows of trees that provided both shade and fresh air until we drove past a security checkpoint filled with military men, and soon enough, the car pulled up in front of a huge white-walled mansion.

Even though the bodyguard had been too strict to accept my handshake, he was polite enough to hold the door as I stepped out.

“Thank you.” I appreciated his gesture and my eyes took in my environment with interest.

We were standing on a large expanse of land, and the style of the building before me appeared almost obsolete, yet it screamed luxury, like a modern Georgian-style mansion.

It was obvious the Axtons were rich.

The opening of the entrance door interrupted my thoughts and an elderly woman walked out with two male servants behind her. There was no exchange shared apart from a bow, then they reached for my bags to take them in.

“You must be Miss Chantel. I’m Mrs. Lopez, the family’s housekeeper.” The woman who appeared to be in her mid-fifties declared with a bright smile. She offered her hand for a shake. I accepted it with a smile and allowed her to lead me in.

“Please. Elena’s just fine.”

“First names are for the maids and servants maybe. You would be in charge of looking after the young miss. I’m afraid this doesn’t apply to you, Miss Chantel.”

“Oh. I see.”

“A very interesting choice of fit for a nanny.”

“I’m sorry?.” I said, slightly confused at her sudden declaration.

“I meant your outfit.”

“Oh..” Mrs. Lopez’s words made me recall the expression on the bodyguard’s face when he had picked me up. And as we walked, the servants stared, but I knew they were looking at me. At least now I understood why. Instead of the usual outfits of jeans and casuals for the job, I had chosen to dress up in a business suit.

“I would work on having that changed…”

“I’m afraid I would love to keep it this way.” I disagreed and two of the maids nearby gasped.

Mrs. Lopez instantly stopped to walk and studied me with interest. “There have been twenty-one nannies before you, Miss. Chantel. The young miss is not an easy one to please. I know your resume says you have handled eight kids in the past, triplets included, but between the two of us…” the housekeeper moved closer to me and lowered her voice. “I hope you get to stay.”

Her words struck a stubborn nerve within me and suddenly my mission as a nanny didn’t look so gloomy any longer. I was eager to meet this kid, who had made the jobs of the nannies before me a difficult one.

“I will stay, Mrs. Lopez,” I assured the housekeeper and looked around the hallway while wondering when I would get to meet any main member of the family. “Where’s this young miss if I may ask?.”

Mrs. Lopez was slightly taken aback as she stared at me with interest. I resisted the urge to chuckle. Perhaps, she’d expected that I would bolt through the door with my bags on my head after listening to her subtle threat.

“I’m afraid Miss Eva is uhm.. unavailable at the moment. Your bags have been delivered to your appointed room and I will have one of the maids lead you there…” She signaled for one of the maids who had been listening in our conversation, then turned back to me. “Settle in, Miss. Chantel. I’ll have someone get you when the young Miss arrives.”

I followed behind the Asian maid carefully. As we walked I learned her name was Kim and she worked in the laundry room. But my mind had already wandered; We had made several turns yet we only passed by the household staff, no family members were in sight…

“Ahh!” Kim abruptly exclaimed as we made another turn. Her black and white uniform was thoroughly soaked. She had bumped into a servant carrying a bowl of water.

“So sorry.”

“Nah. It’s fine. Accidents like that happen all the time. Achoo!.” Kim sneezed and I frowned.

“I’m so sorry.” The servant hastily apologized. Kim's cheeks flushed and she turned to me with a nervous chuckle.

“I think you should get changed, you don’t want to catch a cold.” I proposed but I could see that she was still a bit reluctant about my suggestion.

I insisted with a smile. “I’m good with directions. How about you just tell me what way to go and check up on me later after you get changed?.”

“Alright.” She finally agreed with a sigh and pointed down the hallway. “Once you get to the end of this hall, you break out into two wings. The left-wing is closed to staff, but your room is the third on the right wing. Thank you and I’m sorry. This shouldn't take long.”

I nodded, telling her I understood, but while the other servant cleaned up and left, the maid continued to stare until I turned towards the right wing, and then she left.

I know. I lied. I never was good with instructions. You don't become the best at what you do by missing opportunities. I checked for hidden cameras and made my way to the left wing. I counted six doors and tried to open most; they were locked.

I almost gave up on the last, but my instincts kicked against it so I went ahead. The door opened freely.

“Strip.”

“Come closer to me.”

I froze.

~JADE~“Strip.”“Come closer to me.”That commanding voice……Like a strong magnet, It pulled me in and I found myself seeking its source. I knew I was intruding. My instincts screamed for me to retreat and step back to a safer zone, but I was too far gone. I walked further into the room and met a stunning sight. On a king-sized bed at the center of the dark room lay a stark naked woman. She remained stuck in a sensual pose, like a model in a Playboy magazine. In front of her was a man who I figured had spoken earlier. His sturdy back was turned to me, but his fluid hand worked elegantly on a canvas in front. Retreating should have been extremely easy, but the model was staring straight in my direction. Her eyes widened the instant she sighted me. She lost composure and hurried off the bed, then scrambled hastily for the pieces of her dress. From the white and black cotton uniform in her hands, I realized that she was a maid in the house. The artist’s fingers immediately paused. “I’

The large clock in the room ticked proudly from second to second, laying the weight of the thick silence on our shoulders as we waited awkwardly for the staring contest to come to an end.I couldn’t take my eyes off Eva Axton. Sweetheart-shaped face covered with pronounced makeup, golden blonde hair, and tight-fitting clothes. She was at most fifteen and was already at the peak of teenage rebellion. Angel’s deep eyes were squinted and I wondered what was going on in his mind as he stared at his niece. It was obvious that Eva had angered him greatly and I was curious to know how he planned to punish her.The offender in question was staring back at her guardian with equal intensity and no ounce of guilt in her stance for her misbehavior. Disappointingly, the expected scolding didn’t come. Instead, Angel took a deep breath and broke the silence. “I already have enough on my plate without your foolishness, Eva. ~ANGEL~The unfinished work on my canvas was far from perfection but I had thought of a last-minute remedy. The back door creaked, but I kept my eyes on the art. Drawing provided me with an escape that nothing else could offer. It soothed my troubles and gave me peace, it was all I needed at the moment.“Mr. Axton.” A timid voice called and I knew it was the maid. She had let herself in and approached me. “Strip. Come closer to me.” I instructed, my eyes still glued on the canvas. I had to get exactly what was missing and the addition of a real-life figure to the hue of colors may just account for a thrilling finishing touch. The maid obeyed without another word; she stepped out of her uniform, remained naked, and got on the bed. Then she inched closer to me and struck a position that made me frown. Her presence was perfect, but her stance… not exactly. I needed something closer to wild, yet subtle; a commanding position not a seductive prey.I was just about to make my point pract

~JADE~I was awake long before the knock came. Eva Axton was not only a nuisance to my mission but also a pest to my sleep. “Kim?.” My brows lifted to see the Asian maid outside my room so early in the morning. “I’m sorry. It's Mrs. Lopez. She asked that you get ready and come downstairs as soon as you can.”Eva’s escaping figure the night before flashed before my eyes and I swallowed and tried to fix the maid a smile.“Is everything alright?.”“I think you have nothing to worry about,” Kim reassured and turned away just as swiftly as she had come.I freshened up and made myself presentable in jeans and a lilac V-neck fitted top, then made my way to the common room where Mrs. Lopez was already waiting. “Good day, Mrs. Lopez. You called for me?.”The housekeeper’s eyes narrowed as they took in my outfit, then she gave a tight smile and handed over a package. My brows lifted to realize it was a new phone.“I have a phone, Mrs. Lopez.”“It’s a work phone.” She explained. “You have a

The vehicle had moved fast, but I was able to pause the video at an almost blurry angle where the plate number was readable.“Call the po

~JADE~I looked at the corner where Eva was sitting, glaring after a police vehicle that had carted the boys away. After her statement had been taken down, she’d insisted it was a prank, in their defense. I knew she had done it for Nate, but It was a stupid call to make. It might have been a prank, but it could also have been a real kidnap. I shuddered to think that anything could have happened to her within those moments. “I would appreciate it if this matter is properly looked into, Officer. My ward was taken away without her consent. It’d be a hassle if such a nuisance is to be repeated ever again. Remember it could be anyone next time.” I urged the officer, against Eva’s plea. She stiffened beside me. I pretended not to notice. It was for the best. The chauffeur arrived to pick us up and Eva’s mood soured even further. She rushed into the vehicle, eager to get away from the scene and I thanked the officers for their help and settled in after her.“Did you have fun watching?.” Ev

~JADE~“Mr. Axton…” I didn't expect to see him or anyone else in the library. “Mmmh.” His presence sent me reeling with uncertainty on how to react. We had only exchanged words once, but our first encounter was not one to be easily forgotten.“Didn’t see you there,” I added, chasing the images of nudity far away from my mind and trying my best to sound completely natural. He kept the book in his lap aside and approached me, rolling the wheels just close enough to pick up my book from where it still laid on the ground and raise it to me. “It's Angel, Elena.” He didn't fail to remind me. I frowned, neglecting the way my name easily rolled off his tongue. It's been ages since anyone referred to me with that name. It brought back a whirlwind of memories, and subconsciously, I took a step back, away from him. Angel’s gaze was steady, his hold so strong that I found myself unable to keep up. Yet, something was commanding about his eyes; something so appealing that I couldn't look away

The tiny hairs on my arms rose as I became increasingly aware of how cramped my position was. Still wrapped around Salvatore’s huge form, moving my poor head around was a tug of war. “Hey, let me go.” I blurt out, unable to remain still. A minute more in that position would have somebody calling for an ambulance.“Sorry,” Salvatore muttered absentmindedly while taking a step backward to create breathing space. His eyes wandered to the entrance again. He looked slightly shocked, and I wondered why. Following his line of sight, my heart starts to pound strangely. Angel was truly here, in the shooting range, and it appeared Salvatore wasn't the only one surprised about his sudden appearance. The soldiers stood still for a slow second as if a witch had cast a don't move spell and in the next second, all hell broke loose.“Angel Axton. In the flesh!”“I can't believe it.”Angel’s normally tight face broke into a wide grin as he shook the men merrily. They exchanged pleasantries like they

I could feel his irritation, and I couldn't care less.“Where are you, Elena?” My hands strayed to my hair, and my lips turned up at the sides as I worked up a curl. I looked around the kitchen, Kim and Ursula were back to work, bringing out fresh ingredients to deliver Salvatore’s order. “Heard your family has a shooting range, how come I never knew that before now? Well. Salvatore was kind enough to invite me. Guess I’m gonna have to stick with your brother for a little longer…” I added and ended the call.~We were in the first of three cars and were en route to the family armory which was at a considerable distance from the main house. My eyes widened as the most colorful bowl of breakfast I had ever eaten in my life was placed in front of me. It was my only day off work in the week, but I’d decided I would be spending it at the mansion, to the girls’ delight. My stomach growled in appreciation. Smoothies were Ursula’s specialty and Kim had insisted I try it out at least once the instant I stepped into the kitchen that morning.I wrapped my hands around the bowl and admired how aesthetically pleasing every single ingredient was. “So—Elena?” Kim started to say, Ursula shook her head, and I raised my brows at the two curiously.“What’s up?”Ursula sighed, sending Kim a look that said ‘You should have just shut the fuck up. “You know after that dinner last night, everyone’s been talking

My eyes flicker as I sense the presence of a secondary existence.I clapped twice, wincing slightly as the bright light illuminated my dark room.“You almost had me fooled there, brother,” Salvatore said from behind.Raising a brow, I turned to see him sitting by my patio with a wide grin on his face. My favorite bottle of whiskey was uncorked and he drank directly from it.I wasn't at all surprised that he had invaded my space once again. I half expected to meet him there. ~JADE~“You are fired!”~I could feel the pressure of Eva’s anger and for a brief second, I glanced at Angel’s cool and undisturbed face opposite me. If he had heard Eva’s declaration, he showed no sign of being offended. Even in the heat of the moment, he was still picking up dishes from the numerous servings on the table to his plate. My employment had been demanded by Angel Axton, so technically, he was my boss. The knowledge released a small weight from my shoulders but also added another. What if Eva could still fire me despite that? Was it possible? Did she have the authority to?What would that mean for my mission, revenge, and ultimate plan to retire? No. I couldn’t mess this up. I had to remain here no matter what. Nervously, my fingers wrapped around each other beneath the table. My gaze wandered from Angel to Salvatore. Unlike his younger brother, Salvatore was slightly taken aback. He looked up at his niece strangely; as if he were seeing her for the very first time.

~JADE~Don't look, Elena. Don't.Despite the heat from the burning embers of coal in the lit fireplace, the tiny hairs on my arms were high on alert. I shivered at the slightest breeze, knowing fully well why the air suddenly felt so stuffy. No one wanted me at this table. Not Eva, who was currently glaring at me as she stabbed her steak a little too hard, or Zeta who had found a way to be so close to Angel that their seats were almost touching. My fingers cradled the glass of champagne on the table and just when I had finally gained control of the situation, my eyes betrayed me and I met his gaze. His beautiful deep blue eyes were dark and the slightest smirk made his lip curl as he stared from my face to the napkin his brother had passed to me a few seconds ago. Unlike most families who preferred to eat quietly, I found the Axtons did dinner quite differently. In my head, a thousand thoughts collided. How was Salvatore Axton here? When did he arrive? Wait. How does he know my name?!“You’re Elena, right? Eva’s new nanny.” He spoke again when the silence lingered, breaking me out of my thoughts. “Yes,” My brows lifted, fingers tight around the handle of my bag. “and you are?..” Better to pretend to be clueless. I didn’t want to be thought of as a stalker.“My bad.” Salvatore Axton laughed lightly. His right hand rubbed on the exposed part of his tanned, chiseled chest, where three buttons of his body-hugging, black shirt had come undone. I swallowed as I took in his appearance. Just like his brother, Salvatore was built handsomely. He had dark brown hair, wavy and full, eyes that were a lighter shade of blue compared to Angel’s deep ones, and a chiseled face that could make anyone rush to do his bidding. The fact that I had to crane my neck a little just to get a good look at him made me sum up his height to at least a six foot three. Hi

Sending her a sharp look, I tried to contain my irritation at how calm she was, as if there wasn't a volcano waiting to erupt somewhere.., “Where’s Eva?.” Zeta continued munching on French fries, her words flowing easily. “Don’t beat yourself up nanny, Eva’s just making up with her friends... ” She then pressed her lips together, smacking loudly before picking up another fry.“You should have stopped her!.” I snapped, wondering just how dumb the woman could be. Angel might have let the kids out on bail, but the hostility they exuded whenever they ran into Eva was enough to know what terrible choice of friends they were. “They are not her friends.” I corrected. ~Jade~By Monday, I’d made a long list of things I hated about Angel Axton. He was condescending, arrogant,… annoying. If I were to nanny him up instead of his mule-headed niece, I would get started with a lesson or ten on basic manners. Ursula dropped a tray in my waiting hands, distracting me from my thoughts. I furrowed my brows at the two tall glasses of fruit drink with ice cubes placed on the small tray. One for the brat, the other for the ex.I could get it that Eva had requested I fetch her a drink, but why did I have to wait on Zeta too? The sound of their laughter floated down the hallway. I fumbled between balancing the tray on one hand and adjusting the falling strap of my bag on the other hand. “Finally..” Zeta’s feathery voice sang as she stood up hastily from the leather couch. Her tight nude gown clung to her like a second skin. I sucked a sharp breath in as she picked a glass off the tray without warning, almost knocking down the tray if not for my quick reflexes.
