CHAPTER 149

Kyle King

The cops scribbled in their notes as I retold the incident from the beginning to the end. They stopped me at certain points to get specific details on the environment, and I almost got pissed when they asked about the shadow’s clothing. The attacker had come fast; how could I have gotten what he wore?

‘Do you have any suspects on your list? You are the city’s biggest CEO at the moment, and we are certain you would have gotten a lot of threats.’ One of the cops asked. His face reminded me of Homer Simpson.

I shook my head. ‘Yeah, the threats are usual things in the business world but are mostly threats. Empty threats. My competitors wouldn’t dare pull a fast one on me because they know it will be bad for them.’

Homer Simpson’s fellow replied. ‘Right, Mr. Kyle. In our line of business, we’ve seen empty threats turn into murder cases, so if you have anything to help us with the investigation, please let us know.’

I shrugged, wondering whether I should tell them about my little conversation with Avaline. I could be charged in court for assault. I had almost drained the life out of her that day. Well, if it helps the investigation, then, I had to tell. I almost died, and somebody needs to pay.

‘There was a misunderstanding between my ex-wife and me the morning before the incident. It was heated, and she threatened my life. I don’t know if she’s the one who sent the ‘culprit’ but she is the only one who is capable of going on with her threats without thinking twice.’

The other cop with a bald head and handsome face smiled, ‘I get the ex-wife is Avaline and not Tessa Robert?’

I scoffed. This is for having had two divorces in my lifetime. Next time I come to this world, I will stick to Tessa as my soul mate, no matter what. ‘Yes, Avaline. Have you spoken to her?’

Homer Simpson’s fellow nodded. ‘ We spoke to her, and she had an alibi that checked out. She was at a photoshoot when the incident occurred and you got hit. The cameraman and her team confirmed that she never left until they closed for the day, which was around eleven o'clock.’

I giggled. They didn’t really know Ava at all. ‘If Ava wants someone down, she won’t do it by herself. She’s been in jail already, so she made someone take the fall for her crimes. You guys should do your jobs right. If she’s not the culprit, then she knows who did it.’

The cops stood up, not smiling. I guess they took offense to my words. ‘We will do our jobs right, Mr. Kyle. Call us if you remember anything else, alright?’

I asked. ‘What about the sports car? Would you be able to discover who owned it and why it was on my private driveway?’

My driveway was large because I hated parking in the garage at night. It was a lot of work. Whoever parked there didn’t know this and expected me to drive into the garage and not see their vehicle. That was the only loophole for the person, or was it?

The handsome cop nodded. ‘We will ask questions in your neighbourhood, but you know how your neighbours are. Private and expensive who owns a lot of sports cars. Anyone will be a suspect. If you can remember a colour or a number, that could help. You are known for your photographic memory, sir. They could be of use in this investigation.’

I laughed, shaking my head. ‘I am afraid my photographic memory is in shambles thanks to the blows to my head. The doctors said I should give it time, and I will be back soon. Maybe I could be of great help by then. I am sorry my statement won’t help a lot.’

‘It’s alright, sir. You’ve helped us a lot already.’ Homer Simpson’s fellow replied.

‘By the way, do you have any cameras for your porch? Your mom only allowed us to check the ones in the garage and the house. She said the porch, bedrooms, and garden were out of bounds.’ the handsome cop said, watching me.

I smiled suddenly. I had forgotten the secret camera Xavier had forced me to install on the porch. I didn’t want to because it would be filled with housekeepers and guards flirting or housekeepers and newspaper men flirting. I had my fill of what happened in the house while I was at work or on business. Maybe Xavier’s secret camera would be of help now and not be filled with the love confessions of my housekeepers.

‘I have a camera on the porch that is connected to the computer in my library. My mom doesn’t have access to it, only me. I need to get out of the hospital.’ I smiled widely. I was already better, but the doctor insisted I stay an extra week for observation.

The handsome cop shook his head. ‘Dr. Clark says you aren’t to leave until the weekend. You aren’t cleared yet, Mr. Kyle. We will have to halt the investigation until we get the porch footage. Is that fine with you?’

I sank into my bed, folding my hands. I couldn’t believe Dr. Clark at this moment. ‘I just want to help with the investigation. You can tell him that.’

‘And attend your company’s grand opening tomorrow? We know, Mr. Kyle. Just focus on getting better, and by the weekend, you will be out. You won’t miss your kids birthday  either. Call us if you remember anything.’ The cops closed the door with a quiet click.

I groaned, falling into the bed. I was tired of the hospital room and tired of watching dry comedy shows. Xavier had been running the businesses, and Tessa had been helping. They were stressed; I could see it in their faces, but they didn’t complain. I just wanted to get out and resume my duties, but no, Dr. Clark had to play his doctor’s card. Now, I was going to miss my big night.

A laugh erupted from the movie playing on the television, and I glanced at it. They were playing a Bible quiz game. One of the actresses said a word, and slowly something clicked in my head. I quickly stood up, rushed outside, not minding the startled look of the cop outside my door, and stopped at the front desk. They were able to connect me with Homer’s fellow.

‘Hi, this is Kyle.’ I said, steadying myself. ‘I just remembered something. The sports car had a Sar 145 plate number. I can’t remember the rest, but I hope this helps.’

The Homer's fellow laughed. ‘I can see the photographic memory is back. Thank you, Mr. Kyle; we will run a check on this.’

I smiled, returning the phone to the nurse. The movie was more helpful than I could have imagined.
