Kyle King
In the mirror, I stared at my eyes. I always thought they lacked the spark seen in other people’s eyes. But, after Tessa teased me about having the brightest eyes she had ever seen, the spark somehow emerged. I washed my face and returned to my bedroom. Today was the last day of King’s company headquarters construction. The project manager had been hard-working, and his team was perfect. They had executed everything according to the construction team plan, although there were some hiccups on the way, but we were able to scale through.
I scanned through my outfits, and my eyes rested on a blue shirt with a love emoji at the side. Tessa had gotten it for me a few days before my decision to divorce her six years ago. I never had the courage to throw or wear it, but every morning after she left, I would stare at it like it was a reminder of what we had. My hands lingered on it as I remembered the kiss we had shared when she came to pick up the kids yesterday. She had been reluctant but had slowly dissolved into my embrace as she fell into my hands and I sucked in everything about her—her taste, breath, and warmth.
I smiled as I took the shirt and slid into it. It seemed tighter but fitted perfectly. I hadn’t grown totally out of it. I picked black jeans, a fez cap, and splashed with perfume. I checked the mirror and enjoyed the approval in my eyes. I was tired of walking into the construction site as the cold CEO in black suits and shining boots, or sometimes shoes.
I ordered an Uber because I didn’t want to drive and also because I would be meeting with my mom later in the day. She had arrived in London early this morning due to Avaline’s case, which was still pending because I wasn’t in Nashville. Mom wanted me to drop the case, but she knew I would never do that. After hitting Avaline’s family wealth, they had tried to sell their assets, but Avaline’s arrest had made people wary of doing deals with them.
I pushed thoughts of Avaline and smiled as I flipped through my screen, looking at Hope and Nicholas's photos. I had enjoyed taking care of them even though I had to call Tessa all week for help with the simplest tasks, like how to brush Hope’s hair properly, the cartoons they watched, and preparing their favourite new meal, meatballs and spaghetti. For the record, that was the only meal I couldn’t prepare by myself.
The Uber suddenly stopped. There was an accident; the cops, some paramedics, and a blaring ambulance stood around the crashed vehicle, trying to assess the situation. I told the Uber to slow down because the vehicle looked familiar. I scanned the plate number and instructed the driver to increase the speed. The accident was quite serious, but knowing London and the swiftness of the cops, I could tell they were working harder on it.
A few minutes later, the Uber driver stopped in front of the King’s massive building. I paid quickly through the app and stepped out, enjoying the chill breeze. The weather app had predicted there would be heavy rainfall today, but so far, it has been cloudy.
The project manager saw me as I walked into the building. He greeted me immediately and updated me. I followed him to check the plumbers who were completing their last milestone in my office. I nodded at their work and walked into my office, falling on the soft couch Tessa’s parents had supplied. I scanned the large space, admiring the wallpapers Tessa’s team had chosen for the walls and my portrait with Nicholas and Hope.
I remember the day Tessa drew us. I was in their house, supervising plumbing work in the bathrooms, while she decided to do some nice artwork for me. She used a photo we took, and in twenty hours, she completed the piece. I remember her eyes furrowed in concentration as she drew every part and captured every expression. It was magical.
My phone vibrated. I glanced at it. A reminder from my mom. I had almost forgotten about our date. I was almost tempted to cancel and avoid her until she returned to Nashville. But knowing her, I know she would show up at my doorsteps the next day.
I replied, You should be in Nashville watching over your business, Mom. I am really busy at the site.
I sighed, dropping my phone. Mrs. Dahila was a pain in the ass. I wasn’t surprised why almost all my employees were scared of her. If I were an employee, I would be too.
My phone came on. She had replied. I picked up my phone and read it.
If you had listened to me and not divorced Avaline, I wouldn’t be jumping into a plane every month to check up on you in London. Don’t miss lunch!’
What a mother!
After a long meeting with the construction team, I took a taxi to the restaurant Mom had chosen for lunch. She had sent the location details to me immediately after she stepped into London today. She was supposed to be resting due to jet lag, but hello, hello, Mom was a superhero. One hour later, thanks to traffic and a stop at the filling station, I stepped into the restaurant, scanning the room for Mom. I saw her immediately smiling grimly at me.
‘Hi, Mom. I am sorry I kept you waiting.’ I smiled, taking the empty seat beside her.
She replied, returning her focus to her pancakes. ‘You have never been a punctual person anyway. I will just go straight to the point. You need to drop the case or settle out of court. Avaline’s mom and I just mended our relationship a few months ago. You can’t just walk in and scatter it again.’
I laughed, shaking my head. ‘Mom, that’s not going to happen. Avaline crossed the line, and she must pay for it. Did she tell you about my abduction? That woman has issues and needs help. Getting into prison again will teach her a solid lesson.’
Mom took my hands.‘But, Kyle. Her family has lost everything. Do you want them to lose their daughter too?’
I looked at her. ‘They aren’t going to lose her. She was an accomplice to the crime, and she abducted me. I am certain she won’t be given a life sentence.’
‘Is this your decision, Kyle King?’
I nodded, squeezing her hands. ‘I am not settling out of court or dropping it. Let her dance to her music, okay?’
Mom picked her pancake and changed the conversation. I was amused. I had expected an argument, but it seemed she had realised I wasn’t that Kyle who could be pushed anymore.
Genevieve Tessa Robert‘My parents still believe I made a wrong mistake introducing Kyle to the kids. They don’t think he has truly changed, and I tried convincing them, but it was futile.’ I said, stretching my body on the mat beside the pool. Vera raised her head a bit. ‘You should know the Roberts by now. They never liked Kyle and will never like him. I think they are just tolerating him because of the kids.’I agreed. ‘If not for the kids, I am certain they would have scared him off and warned me to stay away from him.’‘Did you tell Kyle about it?’I nodded. ‘Yes, I have, and he wants us to meet with my parents. I declined. I don’t think it’s a wise decision yet. We’re still friends for now, and I am yet to decide if I want to go further with him.’She laughed, looking at me. ‘But you enjoyed his lips on yours, right? Honestly, I like the baby steps, but a man can’t wait forever, you know?’‘Kyle King would wait for me even if it takes years for me to decide. He’s obese and in l
Kyle KingPlanning a perfect date was always a nervous activity for me because I had to ensure everything was perfect and tailored to my partner’s taste—in this case, my partner was Tessa, and she deserved to be treated perfectly well. I glanced at the table as the housekeeper helped arrange the dishes properly and set the tablecloths. I glanced at her work and nodded my approval. This was going to be a perfect date. I rushed into the shower, and a few minutes later, I was out. I picked a casual outfit—a Ralph Lauren shirt and black jeans. I ran my comb through my black curls. I mentally noted to check in with a barber across the street to reduce the fullness of my hair. I preferred it to be moderate and looking shabby or rough. After a quick view of my appearance, I strolled out of the room and settled in the living room, waiting for Tessa and the kids. I had wanted to take them out, but Tessa preferred a house date. She also felt it was right; the kids came. They were missing me e
Geneveive Tessa RobertI took the blanket from Kyle’s quiet housekeeper and covered the twins. I hadn’t planned on sleeping over, over, but the kids had fallen asleep after our third monopoly game. I kissed their cheeks and followed the housekeeper out. Another reason why I hadn't wanted to sleepover was Kyle.He had stirred my feelings with his call conversation on my way here. Lately, I had been struggling with admitting my feelings for him because I was afraid of envisioning a future with him. Would Kyle give me all the happiness I wanted in life? Would he wake up one morning and demand a divorce because I couldn’t give him more children? children? ThereThere was also Dahila. I didn’t want to think about what Vera had insinuated about her always having an ulterior motive for everything she did. I shrugged, entering the living room. I would also have to talk to Kyle about his mom and suggest a truce. If I was going to accept it into my life finally, Dahila and I needed to sort out
Kyle KingFive months laterAfter sorting Avaline’s court case, I officially named Xavier the CFO of Planet O. The board accepted him with no grumblings, and I wasn’t surprised because he had been performing well even in my absence. I also took Mom to London, and we finally had a peaceful conversation with Tessa. Mom apologized for everything she did in the past and present. She also acknowledged the kids as her grandchildren. Tessa had been happy and didn’t hesitate to draw Mom into a hug.We scheduled a dinner with Tessa’s parents to officially declare my intentions. I had married Tessa the wrong way years ago, but now I wanted to do right by her. Her parents had been stiff during the dinner at first, but Tessa was a beautiful instrument in converting them to accommodating individuals. Mom also carried on the conversation by being herself, and before long, she and Mrs. Roberts were laughing like old pals. During a sleepover with kids at my place, Tessa had suggested we move in toge
Genevieve Tessa Roberts I was fidgeting. I heaved a deep sigh and pulled the hem of my dress to cover my knees. Taking a glance at the wristwatch strapped to my wrist, I noted with great angst that it's been over twenty minutes since the Doctor walked out of the room on an excuse to get back to me soon. Sighing again, I rubbed my palms together before picking up my phone to check if I had any missed calls or anything of the sort but nothing stood out to me. I started to put my phone away when the door opened and I stopped and turned toward the woman that had walked in. Sitting up in my seat, my eyes followed Doctor Brown’s movement till she finally settled back in her seat which was right in front of me, separated by a huge desk that had a bunch of stuff I wasn't interested in on it. “Sorry for the long wait, Mrs. King. Here is the test result.” She smiled softly before handing me the results. I hesitated for a second, my heart leaping with what I didn't know as I eyed the unse
Genevieve Tessa Roberts My body stopped moving but my fingers didn't. I stood there, eyes wide with disbelief and apparent shock as I listened to my husband, Kyle go on and on about a lot of things I was too shocked to decipher. He was talking to Xavier, his childhood best friend who had always been in our lives. I had no idea what to say to that or what to think. My heart must have died on the spot because I suddenly found it hard to breathe. Grasping the fabric of my coat, I willed myself to take in deep sharp breaths but it was extremely hard. All I felt was pain. Excruciating pain that rendered me numb. “But, do you really think that you need to do that? Maybe you should take more tests or consider another option. IVF? Surrogacy?” Xavier was talking, asking the mother fucker I called my husband. “IVF, we have already done and concluded. Nothing's worked out. My mother would have my head at the thought of surrogacy. You know how uptight she is and how she wouldn't bend to the sc
Genevieve Tessa Roberts I laid in bed quietly with tears in my eyes, waiting. Five years that I'd been married to Kyle and I'd never received that level of disrespect. The disrespect was too much. I couldn't take it and the more I thought about it, the more the tears wouldn't stop flowing. I hated to think for even a second that it was because of me that this was happening. I knew exactly the time Dahlia and Katherine finished dinner and left. I also listened as he went straight to his study instead of coming to the room. My heart clenched. The Kyle I had married would have come into the room to check on me. Scratch that, he would have cautioned his mother the moment she opened her mouth and came around to check up on me to see if I was okay. The more I thought about it all, the more it hurt and it got increasingly harder for me to stop the tears. Kyle finally walked into the room at around two in the morning. The room was dark but I watched him move about, shuffling things and arra
GENEVIEVE Tessa ROBERTS I smiled weakly, settling into the chair and texting Vera the latest update. I shuddered a bit thinking about my new status, but I managed to keep myself stable. I couldn't afford to create a scene in the office, and there was also a life growing in me. I gently rubbed my stomach as I took a final glance at my wedding photo and threw it into the bin. `Are you okay, boss?` Gen asked, rushing towards me. I didn't realise I had been crying until Gen dabbed my face, and my eyes followed her gaze to my drenched blouse. I sniffed, standing up, `Yeah... I just received sad news, Gen. I will be returning to my hometown; my family needs me. It was really nice working with you, dear friend.` She hugged me tightly, releasing me when I shuddered. `I am going to miss you, Boss. I do hope all is well at home. I nodded, not wanting to release the news of my divorce. I decided to leave it for Christine, Kyle, or Dahila. I won't be the announcer of my defeat. `I will miss
