Kyle King
I stumbled into my apartment, hating how pathetic I looked. It’s been almost six months since I left Nashville for the United Kingdom to complete a project and win the heart of my ex-wife. The project was completed but not ‘Project Win Tessa Back' . I had failed woefully throughout the previous months, but I wasn’t ready to return home until the second project was done.
My team was working tirelessly to ensure the King’s company’s activities moved smoothly, and I attended all virtual meetings when necessary. I also kept up with tasks for each day to be aware of every move made in the company. I could afford to stay in the United Kingdom until I accomplished my goal.
The main reason why I took on Richard’s project.
I pushed my hand through my already dishevelled hair and sawed until I fell on the couch. I had taken a lot of Martini shots one hour ago with Xavier and some friends we made while working in the hotel. Xavier was still at the seedy bar joint, catching fun with ladies and doing what he was good at. Womanising.
I envied him. His free lifestyle with no commitments. He could afford to be irresponsible and uncontrollable, but me? I had a lot at stake, and there was my mom, who ensured I didn’t do anything to destroy the precious family’s name or her golden reputation.
I suppressed thoughts about her because she was linked to my second nemesis, Avaline. Anything about Avaline made my stomach crumble, and there was always a painful reminder of what she did to Tessa and me.
I sighed, pulling off my clothes and closing my eyes. I couldn’t sleep. I picked up my phone, and before I could stop myself, I sent a text message to Tessa, hoping that this time around she would reply.
‘You should be sleeping, Kyle King, and not disturbing a woman at this hour,’ she replied, adding an angry emoji.
I sat up immediately. This was the first response from her since her birthday month. She had refused to talk to me, pick up my calls, or reply to my messages. At some point, I wanted her to block my numbers so that I would have something against her. But she didn’t. Maybe she wanted to punish me with her silence and make me overthink.
I typed a reply instantly: You should also be sleeping. I was just testing if my number was still unblocked.
She sent a laughing emoji.
I decided to push a bit. I miss you, Tessa. Give me a chance to start again. Let me make you fall in love with me again.
‘You have missed that chance, Kyle. There is no me and you again. Goodnight.’
My heart sank immediately. Maybe I shouldn’t have pushed it, but you couldn’t blame a man for trying. I thought about sending a reply, but something held me back. There were different ways of winning a woman’s heart. I just had to find the best one that wouldn’t push Tessa away.
I smiled slowly. I already knew what I needed to do this time.
Sunlight greeted me as I opened my eyes. My head felt like there were two carpenters competing on who made the loudest bang. I stretched and blinked. Someone had covered me with a blanket during the night. It must have been Xavier.
‘Good morning, bro. You reek of alcohol. How many did you take again last night?’ Xavier asked, handing over a cup of coffee and pastries.
I collected them, tearing the pastry into two and shoving one half into my mouth. I was hungry.
‘I didn’t count, but last night won’t be repeating itself. I feel wasted and the headaches!’ I groaned, dropping the pastries and rubbing my forehead. I didn’t know hangovers were this bad. I always controlled myself when I had alcohol because I hated what it did to people.
Xavier stood up and said, ‘Let me get you some aspirin and a glass of water. You really look bad, bro.’
I nodded, not having the strength to argue with him. I picked up the last pastry on the plate and managed to swallow it without screaming like a baby. The bangs were too much.
‘Here you go. I haven’t seen you badly drunk until last night. It felt like you were trying to drink away your problems, which, you know, isn’t possible.’
‘I know. I just wanted to be reckless for one night and not think about my problems.’ I replied, throwing the pills into my mouth and taking a long sip of water.
He stared at me and said, ‘Have you heard from Tessa?’
I smiled and said, ‘Yeah, she finally replied to my messages last night, but she is still not ready to mingle. I was thinking I could check up on her at Hoplas Design.’
‘That’s a bad idea, Kyle. Have you forgotten the threats her father made after the display at her birthday party? You almost got us arrested for your foolish act!’
‘Foolish act? You were the one who orchestrated everything. I was just a mere pawn in your hands. Anyway, I am going there, Xavi. I need to see her, or else I might just give up right now.’
He shrugged. ‘You have overstayed here, Kyle. How long are you going to keep doing this? It’s obvious she doesn’t love you anymore and doesn’t want to see you around her or the kids. You know she has been going on dates, right?’
I shook my head, not wanting to believe him. ‘What do you mean she has been going on dates?’
He laughed, looking surprised. ‘Don’t tell me you expected her not to continue living? You remarried; she didn’t. You are single now, and you expect her to be single too and not go out with other men?’
‘Right. You are taking her side again. Where’s she meeting the guy?’
‘What do you mean?’ he asked, avoiding my gaze.
I replied coldly, ‘I am aware she’s going out tonight and that, you know where. Spill it, Xavi.’
He shrugged, writing the information on a piece of paper. ‘Don’t cause any drama there, Kyle. She deserves to be happy.’
I smiled sardonically. I couldn’t promise anything.
Geneveive Tessa RobertI walked into the burger and french fries shop and looked at the faces. Andrew’s face shone immediately. He was seated at the far end of the shop, waving excitedly. I suspected this was his first date since he moved to the United Kingdom from the States. I recited a little prayer and walked towards him. This was my fourth date since I moved here, and thankfully all has been well. I hoped the disturbing feeling I had tonight wasn't because of Andrew Fisher but because of the scent of salmon pepper. It always reminded me of a stupid incident that happened while I was in school.‘Hello,’ he greeted, helping with my chair. ‘I hope you didn’t find it hard getting here?’I smiled. A gentleman and a caring one. Nice one, Tessa. ‘ No, my chauffeur knows almost everywhere in this town. I suspect he used to be a cab driver once upon a time, even though he denies it and has been reminded several times about his former job as a teacher. He laughed, ‘That’s funny. How did a
Kyle KingI whistled my way through the shopping mall, helping an old lady pick a nice hat and allowing two women and a man to jump the queue. Xavier cast a curious gaze at me for the umptenth time before collecting our grocery basket and warning the fourth person who was about to jump the queue. I nodded throughout his complaints about my nonchalant attitude and said nothing when he compared me to a smiling donkey. He couldn’t understand how I felt. Tessa had finally given me a chance to take her on a small date. It didn’t mean anything, but I counted it as progress. I let Xavier drive my new car while I smiled and reread the text message Tessa had sent a few days ago. We had scheduled the date for tonight, and I had agreed to an in-house setting. She wanted to see where I stayed and avoid the public eye. I could understand. If some pressmen see us, there will be headlines flying tomorrow about the divorced Kyle King trying to win the heart of his ex-wife. I certainly didn’t need t
Geneveive Tessa RobertI picked up another mouthful of the sandwich cake. It was perfect. Kyle still knew his onions, even though he barely cooked when we were married. He never had the time due to his giant business. I was surprised he was able to create time to do something special for me. I stared at him again. He was quiet, stealing glances at me. I smiled slowly. I decided to start a conversation. Compliment his dinner efforts? Yeah, that sounded like a good way to make him feel comfortable with me.I dropped my spoon, smiling a bit, and said, ‘Thank you for the incredible dinner, Kyle. I really enjoyed myself, and this sandwich cake is awesome. How did you get a perfect taste?’He shrugged. ‘I know a few tricks. I thought you didn’t like the dinner. You said nothing throughout the meal, just curt responses to my questions.’Oh dear! I didn’t realise he had taken my silence to heart. I wanted to feel everything about the meal and not be forced to have awkward conversations. I th
Kyle King‘So you brought her into the house and hid the gist from me? That’s cruel, man.’ Xavier said, pouring another glass of juice.I had decided to tell Xavier about my date with Tessa, but now I regret my decision. The man didn’t know when to stop talking.‘So you mean Tessa left her house and dined with you in here? And left around nine p.m.? That’s weird, and I am finding it hard to believe you.’ He continued, rubbing his palms. ‘How did you convince her?’I shook my head. ‘You should have been a journalist, Xavi, not an ethics hacker or business developer. I would have loved to tell you how everything happened, but I will save the gist for next time.’He shrugged. ‘Right. He brings the girl home and keeps the gist to himself. Would you guys be having another date, or are you keeping that a secret too?’‘No, we aren’t having another date yet. I still need to win her heart, or better yet, prove to her that I am not just back for the kids but for her too. This is where I need yo
Kyle KingEstella’s suggestion was the perfect idea. The kids ended up eating everything, and I couldn't help but laugh at how they rushed through the meal. I guess it’s been a long time since they had a delicious pasta meal. Once they were done, they helped with clearing the dishes and changing the tablecloth to a new one. I was amazed with their organisation and meticulous skills. Tessa had raised them well. Without me.I felt a pang in my chest, but I quickly shook it off. I was here now, and that was all that mattered. I helped them arrange the tablecloth properly and ushered them to the parlour to watch some cartoons while I focused on dishwashing and preparing Tessa’s favourite. Glancing at the wall clock, I realised I had like three hours to do everything before she showed up. That was enough time. The kids would probably be asleep by that time, or they might join us for dinner. If Tessa’s mood was great,.I hadn’t stopped to think about how she would feel once she realised wha
Geneveive Tessa RobertI spent the weekend explaining to the twins why Kyle wouldn’t be repeating his visit. I didn’t want them to become attached to him. As much as I enjoyed his surprise visit and incredible dinner, I wasn't about to dissolve my coldness towards him. He made promises before, and guess what? He ruined it with a divorce paper and a denial of what he felt for me.I am sorry, but I don't forgive and forget easily. He had changed obviously, but I couldn't just accept fully that he was here for me and not because I wasn’t the barren woman anymore. Everything in me wanted to believe him, but there was still that doubt lurking in my bones. What if everything was a ploy? You know? You show up, pretend like you’re a repentant soul, and when the lady falls fully, you take the kids and even her wealth! Kyle could do something like that. He wasn’t above tricking people to get what he wanted, or revenge. I picked up the flowers that James had dropped earlier today on the kitchen
Kyle KingI watched as Vera and Murphy took their vows while Tessa and the train of bridesmaids smiled widely. I noticed Tessa throw a few glances at me, and I could read what she was thinking. Our massive wedding in St. Catherine’s Cathedral The vows and smiles. She had been thrilled years ago, even when her parents refused to attend the wedding. She wasn’t bothered because I made sure she didn’t feel lonely. My mom and one of her distant uncles had stood by our sides, and the proceedings had been exciting.I could remember that the media had talked about it for months, and we had been the most trending couple. I didn’t do well with her. That was certain. I glanced at her again. Her eyes were red. Damn. Whatever she was thinking about must be hurtful. It’s you.My phone vibrated. A messag
Geneveive Tessa RobertI strolled into the office smiling and complemented some of the employees who were hanging around. They raised eyebrows, and I could see the questions in their replies. They must be wondering what was going on with me.I couldn’t explain why I woke up feeling excited and relaxed. I had gone through the list of items that could be the cause. I had given up until a text message greeted me as I stepped out of the vehicle. Kyle. He had sent his fourth poem this week. An apology poem, and he had included a line from my favourite poem by Rudyard Kipling. As a smile formed on my face, I realized he was the reason why I had woken up excited. Even though I had tried to chase him away during Vera’s wedding, he still remained. So, I decided to play it cool, and we went on a friendly outing with the kids, which ende
