“We need to go. We can’t let the council wait for us.”
Liam glanced at Aron, who stood behind him with his usual guarding stance.
“Give me one more minute,” Liam said gloomily. His lips were set into a thin line and his pitch-black eyes flickered into a golden glow before returning to their usual color. He was so torn. He needed to be in this place to think things through.
Liam heaved out a heavy breath as he stared into the horizon. On this hill, just before the protective walls of Bresmont, was where the ashes of his late wife were scattered into the air. She was here, and he felt her presence through the stillness of the trees and the peaceful sound of birds chirping.
“I missed you, Tash,” he silently whispered. His heart felt empty since she was gone. It was never the same again, but he tried to live each day. There was never a day when he didn’t think of her, and with each passing day, his hunger for her presence grew stronger.
He missed her so much, and his unborn child who died with her.
Liam closed his eyes and uttered a silent prayer before he stood up.
Today, he will meet the woman who will be appointed as the new Luna of his pack. She was personally selected by the Lycan King, and agreed upon by the members of the Council of Claws.
Liam grimaced at the thought.
As the Alpha of one of the districts of Devonlaire, he’s bound to the rules set by the Council.
Liam needs to have another Luna to rule alongside him and produce the next Alpha in line as his successor.
Liam left the place with a heavy heart, and they drove straight to where the courthouse was located, at the Castle of the Lycan King, at the center of Devonlaire.
The majestic Castle of Devonlaire where the King resides welcomed Liam’s sight. The huge castle was an attraction. Neighboring kingdoms were envious at how the Lycan King of Devonlaire established such a magnificent castle that stood amongst the rest.
As Liam and Aron entered, all eyes shifted to where they stood. The Council members were already there, except for the Lycan King.
Looked like they were waiting for him. Liam fought the urge to smirk, he didn’t trust these councilmen, not even one soul. If there were someone he could trust, it was only his dead wife. And now that Natasha’s gone, he’s not even sure if there was one who’s loyal to him.
Liam roamed his sight at each creature present inside the courthouse. His parents and brother were there. His father nodded at him, and Liam knew what that meant. He's not allowed to argue whatever the council has decided.
“So much for being an Alpha,” Liam whispered to himself, but he knew every creature inside the courthouse heard what he said. But who gives a damn?
Liam gritted his teeth when his eyes locked on the only female present inside the room, Ember Jacobson, the only daughter of one of the councilmen.
Anger bubbled inside him when he looked at Arnulf Jacobson’s proud face. If he could only rip off that man’s head from his neck, he would probably have done it a long time ago.
Behave yourself, son. You don’t want to cross any of the council members today.
His father reminded him using their mind link. And that only made Liam want to burst into anger.
He felt like he was being mocked in front of these creatures.
“We don’t want to further delay this since Alpha William Ashdown is finally here.” Gregor Smith, one of the councilmen said, his voice was full of sarcasm. “William, Alpha of Bresmont, you swore that you would comply with any of the Council’s demands upon assuming your post as an Alpha. For years, you have been mateless and without a Luna to rule alongside you. As an Alpha, you have to secure your post by producing an heir, and you failed.”
Gregor paused a bit, he looked at Liam who was about to burst in pure rage. Gregor could clearly see the anger in Liam’s eyes.
“I don’t want to take any Luna. Natasha will always be my Luna. Death or alive, she will always be my Luna.” Liam's eyes landed on Ember, who was sitting proudly on one of the chairs. His eyes flared. He hates her already.
“If so, you will bear the punishment set by the Council for defying orders. You and your family,” Arnulf interjected.
Whispers erupted from the courthouse.
The former Alpha of Bresmont stood. His eyes glowed as he stared at Liam, his son. “We have talked about this before. What the fuck is this now? I thought we had a deal?”
As a creature born with rage, Chris will not tolerate his son’s behavior. He can’t let Liam disgrace the name his family had been taking care of for decades. Just because of his stupid love for a she-wolf who’s already dead.
Chris growled. Sharp nails on his hands started to elongate, and his teeth started to appear as he snarled at his own son.
“Why?”
Heads snapped at Ember when she suddenly stood. Ember Jacobson is a true definition of beauty. With her red hair and emerald eyes, she’s every man's dream. She's not just an epitome of beauty, but also of strength, since she’s one of the strongest the pack ever had. That's the reason why she was chosen by the Lycan King to be the next Luna of Bresmont. She possessed all those qualities to be a great leader to rule alongside the Alpha. And she couldn’t quite figure out why this ruggedly handsome yet stupid Alpha couldn’t see her worth. He knows her. They grew up together, and Liam knew what she was capable of.
“You are the Alpha of Bresmont, it’s your responsibility to be the anchor of every pack member. Yet, here you are, still mourning the loss of your wife. It's a clear display of weakness and unstable emotion. Didn’t you swear to put the pack first before yourself? Are you a liar also? Aside from being weak and stupid? Your actions are a total disgrace to Ashdown's. You don’t deserve to be called an Alpha.” Ember spoke about what she had in mind. Her face was void of any emotions. Her eyes were like the depths of the ocean, mysterious and scary.
As one of the strongest female werewolves in Bresmont, it’s an insult to her to be declined by their Alpha. She came from a family of strong werewolves, the finest warriors Brestmont ever had. Yet, their Alpha had the audacity to reject her.
Growls erupted inside the courthouse as Liam tried to shift. But he was instantly stopped by his brother, Kean, and his Beta, Aron. The councilmen were in their fighting stance, too.
“You fucking bitch! How dare you speak to me like that?” He snarled. His eyes glowed and he bared his teeth. Liam was ready to shift to his wolf form, but Chris appeared in front of him using his lightning speed and gripped his throat.
Liam tried to lunge at her, but Kean and Aron got both of Liam's arms restricted.
Liam was one of the strongest werewolves in Bresmont, but he was no match for his father’s century-old strength. Chris clawed Liam’s neck; his sharp nails dug into his flesh, making fresh blood gush out from the wounds.
“Enough!” Chris’ thunderous voice reverberated inside the courthouse.
Liam let out a whimper. Chris’ tight hands were still on his throat. “You will not disgrace this family, William. I will not tolerate it.” His voice was strong and his eyes flickered, an indication that he was trying to control his anger.
It was written by the Code of Law of Devonlaire. Whoever defies the commands and decisions of the council shall suffer the consequences. For Alpha Liam’s part, he will be exiled and his family will lose status in society. Their wealth will be confiscated, and they will be left in the streets like rats. The pride of the Ashdown's can’t take that shame. “Do you understand me?” Chris demanded.
Chris tightened his hold on Liam’s throat, blocking the air passage to his lungs. Liam choked and he couldn’t breathe, but Chris was determined to get the answer he wanted from his son.
Chris truly understands his son’s sentiments, but as one of the elders of the Ashdown Clan, he can’t allow their downfall just because his son chose to be faithful to his dead wife. He knew how painful it is to lose a loved one. He himself experienced the deaths of his family. But right now, they need to use their wits.
“Fuck! Yes!” Liam struggled to say those words.
His heart ached for Natasha. Just the thought of having another woman in bed made him want to lash out at all of the creatures present in the courthouse.
His pride was wounded. He felt so powerless and weak.
As Liam stared straight into the emerald green eyes of Ember Jacobson, he promised that he would make her life miserable with each day that she would live as his Luna. She would regret the day she looked down on him.
The union between werewolves is not the same as the union of other creatures. As an Alpha, the Lycan King should approve of the union first before they can proceed to the Marking Ceremony, which will be held at Bresmont. Some wolves have mates and some don’t have one. As for Liam, he married Natasha, who was not his mate. Or maybe he hasn’t found her yet. But Liam didn’t actually care about that mate thing, he only wanted Natasha, and no one else. After the approval and blessing from the Lycan King, Liam and Ember went straight back to Bresmont, where the marking ceremony should be held. Liam had requested that it be private because he didn’t want to have a huge celebration.“Congratulations to both of you.” Esmeralda, Liam’s mother, greeted the two as they stepped out from the walls of the King’s Castle. “Ember, dear, you look exceptionally beautiful with that dress. Congratulations on being the new Luna of Bresmont. As the mother of the Alpha, you can always come to me whenever you n
After helping Dr. Brynn, the pack’s doctor, at the infirmary, Ember was led by the in-house maid to her room. The master’s bedroom, Liam and her bedroom.Tonight, was supposed to be the Marking ceremony, but Ember knew that it would never happen. Liam will never give his mark to her. With the kind of relationship that they had and his hatred towards her family, Ember prepared herself for everyday battle with that hard-headed alpha. But that’s the least of her worries. She can always seduce Liam and make him surrender to her. She will prove to him that she’s better. So much better than Natasha.Ember scanned the room. Her eyes landed on every detail of the room, and she was impressed. The room was very spacious, the king-sized bed looked so comfortable, and the color of the walls was so calming. There's a luxury chandelier that hung in the middle of the room, which added to the majestic ambiance of the room. The design of the room was a combination of old and modern design. It was actua
Ember gritted her teeth as she sat on one of the infirmary’s empty beds. The rest of the pack was now in their respective rooms, resting and recuperating after the attack after they took her to the infirmary since it won’t heal easily. She was the only one who was left in the infirmary together with Dr. Brynn who was treating her wounds, a wound that was inflicted by her very own cruel Alpha. Ember wanted to laugh mockingly at herself. She was embarrassed on her first night being a Luna.Ember grimaced at the thought that Liam really had hurt her. Now that she had seen his cruel side, she knew that he was a hopeless case.“This will hurt,” Brynn warned her. She was holding a bottle with a black liquid on it. Ember had no interest in asking what was inside that bottle, all she could think of was how painful her wounds are and how she hated the Alpha right now.Doctor Brynn Daniels, the pack’s doctor had been kind to treat her at this hour.Ember just nodded slowly. Pain does not scare
His eyes strained from the darkness of the forest, his lungs burned as he forced air into his lungs and the sharp claws of his feet dug deep into the muddy floors of the forest. Alpha Liam may not be the fastest in the pack but his one of the strongest Devonlaire ever had.Liam was beyond angry, he was enraged by what happened back at the mansion. It was past midnight and he should be in the comforts of his own bed right now, but here he is, running like crazy deep into the forest, seeking refuge in his sanctuary like the coward that he is.His anger was directed towards Ember who had the audacity to act like she was the queen of the pack. He already hated the fact that he has no choice but to marry her, and now she was acting like a bitch that she really is.His movements were lightning-fast as he climb up that hill. He was in his wolf form.Once there, he sniffed the air to determine whether there was another creature aside from him, and when he found no traces of any scent, Liam le
It’s been almost a week since she moved to Bresmont. She was originally living in the castle as one of the Lycan King’s elite soldiers and the strongest amongst the rest in Devonlaire. When her father said that she was chosen by the council to be wed to a grumpy, old Alpha, Ember couldn’t seem to understand why they chose her. She’s already committed to serving the King, but then when the King agreed, Ember could not say no anymore. She just has to deal with it. After all, she really has no say in anything in this realm dominated by Alphas. Ember knew she will regret it.And now she’s suffering from his icy stares and cold treatment whenever they bumped into each other. Not that she minded being ignored by the Alpha, she just can’t figure out how William Ashdown became an Alpha of the Pack. He’s a bit childish and immature for his age. For Ember, Liam is not suitable to be an Alpha. He mainly uses his emotions and not his brain and instincts.“There you are! I practically looked for y
Ember was lost for words at what she saw in front of her. Her heart pumped a little bit than it should as she scanned the young wolves lined up on a platform. She estimated their age ranges from thirteen to sixteen, so young but also very determined to learn how to combat and protect the realm. Her heart was filled with adoration for these young wolves because she was once like them. Though she really was not into fighting and self-defense before, she learned to love it since it will ensure the safety of the people of Devonlaire.“So, how do you like this place? I thought you might like it here since you are part of the King’s soldiers.” Solana crossed her arms in front of her chest as she looked at those young recruits with pride. We trained them and taught them how to be strong. Because we all know not werewolves were born with the ability to fight, some of them were omegas, but they are learning.” Solana explained.“Wow, this place is so beautiful. Where is this place? Is it outsid
Liam got out of his car the moment they arrived back at the mansion. He has a lot of questions running inside his head and it agitates him that he has no answers for them, only Ember can answer those questions. That means he has to talk to her now, not a good idea for him since he has been doing great avoiding her.“Alpha, Fulker deployed additional soldiers on the west border. Craig already brought the new recruits into the camp for the registration, he said your presence was needed there.”Javier, one of Bresmont’s elite soldiers told Liam as they made their way inside the mansion. He almost forgot about the new recruits this week. He has a lot of things on his mind right now, and the thing that occupies his mind the most was how to avoid Ember at all costs.Liam nodded in approval. “Good, I will be there in a minute. I just had to talk to the Luna for a moment.” Yes. He calls Ember luna. She doesn’t want to rise issues about treating her badly. He realized that after their fight on
Ember was confused why Liam wanted to talk to her in private. Since she arrived here Liam never showed interest in talking to her, much more in a private place like his office. She knew that his office and his room were the same. It was just separated by a wall, but have connection doors. Moreover, he always made her feel that she was not welcome in this place and that he doesn’t give a fuck as to what she was going to do.She went to shower and changed her clothes first since she was bathed in sweat after the training. Ember was debating whether what she will wear in front of Liam.“Why am I doing this?” Ember shook her head and pulled on the first shirt her hand got hold of and put it on. She never really paid much attention to her looks. She doesn’t care whether she wears the nicest dress in the crowd or not, until now.As she made her way to Liam’s office, Ember was really nervous. Her knees were like jellies. She never got nervous when she was in the field to fight, but Liam was
It’s been a month since Ember happened to escape from the cruelty of werewolf hunters and within those days it was eerily quiet and peaceful in all of Devonlaire. It was something that Ember finds weird and worrisome. She knew that those hunters and witches were just hiding somewhere, plotting unimaginable things on how to eliminate them.Ember felt two warm and strong arms circling her waist and Liam’s fresh scent assaulted her senses. He buried his face in the space between her neck and shoulder, and Ember can’t help but let out a laugh when his stubbles tickled her skin.“Liam! I’m sweaty all over!” Ember protested. She’s sweaty from her sparring with Yuri. After Yuri escaped the fire, Ember saw her change. She’s now determined to learn the art of fighting and Ember will give her anything just
Somewhere deep in the forest outside the walls of Bresmont, a group of werewolf hunters gathered to take refuge in a cave that was not inhabited by any creatures. After the chaos that happened in the camp, few survivors were able to escape and that includes their leader, Robert Kingston, and his sister, Rolyn.A loud cry reverberated through the walls of the cave as Rolyn cried in pain. She was chained to the wall, blood dripping from her wounds while Robert punished her.“Please, stop,” she begged him to stop. But Robert has no plans in listening to his little sister. She’s been a pain in the ass, and now Robert got full of her dumbness.Robert laughed. “You want me to stop?” An edge of mockery can be heard in his tone.Robert went to Rolyn and grabbed her hair forcefully so that she
“Are yous sure you can do this?”Liam asked Ember for the third time. He’s not entirely convinced that Ember is already fit to go to Devonlaire.Ember took the passenger’s seat while Liam slid into the driver’s seat. The Council of Claws had Ember summoned to Devonlaire. The Lycan King wanted to personally talk to Ember about her experience while she was captured by the hunters, something Liam was opposed to.Ember gave Liam a tight smile as she buckled up. She propped herself towards Liam who was starting to revive the engine.“You worry too much, Alpha. Have you forgotten that I defeated a whole army of hunters and find my way back to Bresmont?” There was an edge of pride in her voice. “Standing in front of the council and the King will not have me budge.”Emb
Ember often asked herself before if soulmates were true. Is it really true that the Moon Goddess grants every werewolf a mate, someone who will be with them for the rest of their lives?Ember never really thought that she has a soulmate, until now. She believed that Liam is her soulmate. It may sound weird but she can feel it, deep inside her she can feel how Liam clawed and caged her heart.Liam pushed Ember to lie on the bed, Ember didn’t protest at all. They were both consumed by the fire that they were feeling. Though she finds it weird that Liam is this aggressive towards her, she just went with the flow, she likes it anyway.A soft moan escaped from her mouth when Liam slipped his lips to her neck. His body was pressed against her and she could feel how hard he is right now. Liam’s hands were all over her, squeezing, caressing, and feeling her every skin
Ember woke up in an unfamiliar room. The blinding lights made it hard for her to see where she actually was, but the scent was quite familiar to her.High ceiling, huge, comfortable bed, and the scent of someone she knew assaulted her senses when she turned and buried her face in the pillow.“Oh, god!” She groaned. Pain shot through her body when she tried to move out of bed. Then she remembered everything that happened. The hunters attack Bresmont, she was captured and taken to their camp and she was tortured. She escaped. She remembered it all too vividly, how she killed almost all of those hunters in the camp and how much she tried to go back to Bresmont despite the wounds she sustained. She strained her eyes and let them roam around the room. The design was familiar.Liam. She can smell Liam's scent
“He’s out of his mind.” Chris closed and rubbed his eyes in frustration and annoyance. How can Liam, an Alpha of one of the districts of Devonlaire, go to ask help from a witch? Sure, that witch was not like the others who like to wreck chaos in the realm, but dealing with them is prohibited, not if the King permits. And given Liam’s situation right now where the King wanted him to go back to Bresmont, it will be a disaster.“Someone has to stop him, or else we will all be dragged by this. We all know how cruel the Lycan King is. He’s not gonna take this easy.” Kean was edgy. “We need to go now.” He glanced at Solana who was also pacing back and forth, uneasiness was consuming her.“Go. Bring him here. Drag him if you must.” Chris pursed his lips into a thin line. This is what h
“Damn you, Liam!” Kean cursed when he tried to connect with Liam again through their mind link but he was already blocked by the Alpha. “Hard-headed asshole!”Kean felt hopeless as she tried again, but to no avail. His brother is really determined to save the Luna all by himself, even with the King’s command not to find Ember. Kean was sure as hell that Liam will be in great trouble if he’s not going to obey the King’s command, not only will Liam be compromised, but also the whole Ashdown name.Liam might be convicted of Treason and the worst part of it is that there’s a possibility that he might be executed.“The King ordered him to come go back here at Bresmont, but Liam has other plans.” Kean looked at his father, Chris, helplessly.Kean may be the naughty and the not-so-serious type between the two brothers, but he’s the more logical thinker tha
Liam dropped on his knees as he bowed in the presence of the Lycan King. He believed that there’s no one except the King who can help him find where Ember is right now. He asked the King to help him locate Ember since the Lycan King knew everything about Devonlaire. He’s more than a century old, he knew a lot of things about his kingdom, especially about his enemies. The King chuckled when Liam begged him for help.“Don’t you have any faith in Ember Jacobson?” The King is amused. He could still remember how this alpha disagreed with his marriage with Ember. The King wanted to laugh, he couldn’t believe how weak this alpha to fall in love that easily. The Lycan King didn’t believe in love. For him, there’s only hate in this world full of cruelty and sadness. His hundreds of years of existence had taught him that love does not exist, it is only a product of one’s imaginatio
Ember knew that she had to find a way to leave the place or else she'll end up being dead, just like the former luna of Bresmont. Her few days stayed inside the den of the werewolf hunters, she saw how much hatred Kingston had for the werewolves, and he's imparting that kind of hatred to other hunters. He's dragging those half-hearted hunters to have that kind of hate Kingston has. They viewed then them as the most vile creatures that ever existed, something that isn't true. Yes, they were cruel but only to those who deserved it.Ember knew that she'll be tortured soon, it's just a matter of time. With the cruelty and hate Kingston have for the werewolves, Ember was a hundred percent sure that she will never walk out of this pit unscathed. She may even end up dead. Her eyes remained closed but she strained her ears to hear everything that's ha
