AUTUMN:
Fifteen years ago...
Autumn was only 8 years old...
We sprawled on the grass. The three of us. Maddox. Hugh. And me. All of us were catching our breaths, after running for a long time in the forest. It was fun and exhilarating at the same time. Maddox said it would be more fun if we had our wolves, but we had not reached our eighteenth birthday, yet so there were no signs of it.
"That was fun," Hugh declared, the eldest among us being ten years old. But he did not look like ten years old. He had a huge body and daddy said that he would become a fine alpha with all the muscles and genes he had. Between Maddox and him, he was the tallest with the rest of us and the leader of the among us.
"If we had our wolves, then, we would be faster than we ran using our feet," Maddox stated. He was one year younger than Hugh was. Two years older than me. But still, it did not stop us from forming a bond.
I did not know how our friendship started, but daddy said that it had something to do with our parents. With my dad being one of the finest warriors in the pack. He was my idol and one day, I would be as fine as him. I will follow his footsteps.
Daddy said I had some potential. Which I did not understand.
"One day, I will also become your alpha and you two will bow down before me,” Hugh said proudly. “I will inherit my Dad's position.”
Giggling, I said, "And I will be your Luna and will be your bodyguard. I will be one of your warriors, Hugh."
It would never happen. Bonds were decided through fate. Not because of a human's decision.
"No. You will be my mate, Autumn," Maddox declared, snatching my hands. “No, you’re not going to endanger your life like that. It is the duty of the men to protect you. Not the other way around. I will always protect you, Autumn, because you will be my mate.”
A low growl escaped from Hugh's lips. "No! She is mine!"
I turned sideways and pinched each side of their cheeks causing them to flinch.
“Ouch. Ouch!” the two said in unison.
“You're both silly, you know that? It's not for us to decide if we will be mates or not. It will be the Moon Goddess. The Moon Goddess will pair us to the people who deserve us.”
“I will reject my mate!” the two said in unison.
Maddox and Hugh stared at each other and glared.
“She's mine.”
“No, she's mine.”
Giggling even more, I said, "No one's going to have me because the three of us are friends. Friends are not like that. We will get old and we will always have each other’s back. We will not fight because we understand each other. I will not choose any one of you because we will stay like this for the rest of our lives."
Maddox and Hugh groaned. They were like that sometimes. Doing the same thing like their minds were connected.
"I want you to be my Luna, Autumn," Hugh declared, with certainty. “I will become strong to protect you.”
"No. She's going to be my mate. I already told Dad about this, Hugh. Dad said he is fine with it. She likes Autumn too, as do our playmates.”
“Mommy and Daddy like it too when we play together.” Still smiling, I said, "Let's promise to be with each other through thick and thin. That no one will leave someone behind." Extending my hand, I waited until the two would accept mine. “We must honor our promise, alright?”
They hesitated at first. They were very vocal when it came to wanting me as a mate. However, Daddy would scold me for thinking things about that when I am still eight years old. He said that it is time to have a mate if my wolf has already resurfaced.
"I promised to take care of you for the rest of my life," Hugh declared.
"I promise it, too," Maddox said. “Nothing will change among us, Autumn. Nothing.”

Present time…
I was about to return the cleaning materials to the utility room when someone suddenly pulled my hair and kicked me on my leg. I cried out in pain as I fell on the ground.
Looking up, I meet the glares of my packmates whose hobby was to make my life miserable.
The mop was on my chest while the rug was on the floor a couple of inches away from me.
“What did I do?” I asked, although I did not have to ask.
One of the girls stepped in with a smug expression on her face. I knew her. She was one of Sabrina’s minions, the girl who believed she was loved by everyone because her Dad had a high position in the pack. She was also the girl who believed she could do everything because she was Sabrina.
“You believed it was our fault? You were blocking our path. That’s what you deserved. Next time, look where you are going, bitch.”
Trisha, my wolf growled inside me, wanting to be out. But I kept her on the leash. Nothing good will happen if I let my wolf deal with them. The last time it happened, she ripped off one of the warrior’s ears and I became the number one hated omega in the pack.
Biting the inside of my cheeks until I tasted the metallic blood, I answered, “I’m sorry. I won’t do it again.”
They scoffed while I started picking up the cleaning materials while stopping myself from flinching. That bitch kicked me hard and it felt like I fell on the stairs with broken ribs. When they hurt me, they went all out as if they were releasing all their anger towards me.
The woman kicked me again.
A sharp pain exploded on the left side.
I gritted my teeth while forcing myself to swallow all the pain.
‘You are seriously disappointing me, Autumn. Move your fucking hands and hit them back. Hard! Damn it!’ Trisha cursed.
I coughed when the pain was no longer tolerable.
Once, it was only one attacking me and the next, the other followed.
My wolf was shouting in the background, urging me to fight back, but my body was no longer able to move at the continuous attack.
When I felt like my vision was about to darken, I caught a whiff of something amazing. Something sweet which I never inhaled in my entire existence.
Even Trisha froze. ‘Mate,’ she muttered, flabbergasted. She was as confused as me.
Dulling out the pain, my gaze turned around and saw it was none other than Maddox. Our new beta. One of my childhood best friends was my mate?
AUTUMN:Beta Maddox and my eyes met. Then, he opened his mouth, but I could not make out what he was saying. The woman who was kicking me suddenly dispersed and ran away. In a blink of an eye, he was suddenly in front of me and helped me get up. His mouth opened, but I could not hear anything. ‘Mate,’ Trisha whispered.Images of our childhood resurfaced of him promising me to take me as his mate and rejecting anyone if it was not me.This time, this was no longer our decision, but the Moon Goddess herself.Did the Moon Goddess pitied me this time?“Autumn,” he called, glancing at the surroundings. We were in the secluded part of the pack house, where only a few would pass. This was the part of the house going to the utility room where it was also rumored to be housing a lot of ghosts.Beta Maddox helped me stand and nearly released me when we both felt the strong flow of electricity when our skin contacted. It was undeniable and without a doubt he was my mate.Finally.“You are my ma
AUTUMN:It had been a week after the beta’s rejection and I was pretending that everything was normal. No. My bad. There were no pretensions anymore because no one was giving me their attention. No one. So there was no pretending at all since they did not see me.I was doing my usual work in the pack house. Cleaning the hallway. Wiping the portraits on the wall. Wiping the dust of the enormous sculptures. Everything was monotonous. And it was already tiring. Lazily, I dragged the mop back to the utility room. I had already finished cleaning everything. There were a few omega's that I had met, but no one bothered to say their greetings. All feared me. A gasp escaped my lips when I felt the sticky liquid on my hair. With shaky hands, I reached out and found out it was nothing but an egg thrown on my hair. Again? Incidents like this were no longer new.The hall rang with laughter coming from my pack members. ‘Don’t tell me you will do nothing?’ Trisha asked, baring her teeth to me.
AUTUMN: Beta Maddox looked like a god who had walked here on earth. All the women had gaped at him as if he was what they were worshipping on the ground he walked. My stomach churned. Why did he have the perfect timing? Always seeing my pathetic side. The bullied. The weak. “Beta Maddox.” The crowd dispersed and parted. With my heads bowed, I waited for the footsteps to stop until I could see feet right in front of me. I had to stop myself from inhaling his delicious scent. Damn it. Why did he have to barge in and pretend that he did not reject me? I hated him. I loathed how he tossed our past. "Bullying in front of the daylight?" Beta Maddox asked. Why do you ask when you even rejected me. Secretly. ‘Why? You want the world to know that he rejected you and that you want it to be out in the open?’ Trisha asked. “Sabrina!” The woman paled. Sabrina was too flabbergasted to answer. She should have reacted that way. Bullying was prohibited in the pack, but it was
AUTUMN:What? Beta Maddox did not expect that I would rob it into his face? Shame on him! “Watch your mouth, Autumn,” he whispered, his voice flat. "I am still your beta. I am your superior. You follow whatever I say."I am your ex-mate, I wanted to say, but stopped myself from saying it. “Why would I? Will you punish me? Do it. All of you are good at bullying me so it does not make any difference at all.”“All I am saying is that…”“What?”“We are no longer eight and nine years old, Autumn. We are already adults. That's why I am asking you to talk in private.”I scoffed. “No. You talk to me in private because you do not want the pack to know that you're paired to a curse one? Enough of being a fake knight-in-shining armor, Beta Maddox. You already rejected me. So please stop giving me your fake care."He heaved a long sigh. "Everyone who is bullied, I will do the same to save them, Autumn.""Whatever you say, Beta Maddox. If you will excuse me."Gathering my cleaning utensils, I w
AUTUMN:Those memories were what keep me doing. If the did not exist, what would keep me going? Beta Maddox stared at me for a long time before he heaved a long sigh. "I'm not asking you to forget them. I'm asking you to move on from the past. There's no way that would happen. I'm talking about the promises we did, Autumn. As you can see, I am already arranged to marry to Sabrina. I cannot say no to the elders. I have no—"Damn him! He had no choice, really? “Stop!” I said cutting off his word. It was uninteresting to hear how he was an obedient beta. Gathering my courage, I asked, "Is there anything else you want to say, Beta Maddox? I don't want to hear anymore of the past."He opened his mouth, and was about to say something, but closed it again.Good because I did not want to hear any of his lame excuses."Can I ask something, Beta Maddox?""What is it?""Don't call me anymore especially if we are in private. Sabrina, your fiancee will get mad at me for sure." Especially if sh
AUTUMN:First it was confusion and the next, I was glaring back at Beta Maddox. With no plans of answering him, I hurried cleaning the hallways, mopping everything and when I was done, gathered all the cleaning materials that the other omega's had dropped on the floor. “Have you gone mute?” he asked. “I said why are you cleaning the hall alone?”At the corner of my gaze, he pocketed his phone in his pocket, while eyeing me.“I did not need an audience, Beta Maddox.” Telling him why the others left was a waste of time. There was no guarantee that he would take my side. He rejected me, remember? Seeing him will only make the mate bond painful. Just because I carried it well did not mean that I was no longer in pain. “I am overseeing things, Autumn. You're not answering my question.” “I'm not the only one working. Try to check if the others are done as well.”I double checked the hallway, checking if there were still spots that were left. But there was none. “Done. You're the only o
AUTUMN:I was in my room, cursing Beta Maddox for I did not know how many times already. My heart had been pounding like crazy. A mixture of anger. Pain. And annoyance.I did not understand why they wanted me to join the party. No. Why did the alpha want me to join the party? For what, actually? To rub it on my face that I was completely alone in this place? If I joined the party, I would only be left behind. The rest would only make me a clown in the party. I would feel miserable and heartbroken at the same time. Damn them! I cursed for the nth time while biting my fingernails. What are they trying to prove? Pacing back and forth, I could hear my phone had been ringing nonstop. It was my boss. The one who hired me for a part-time job. I did not know how to answer him, actually. He was one of the few mortals who made this world bearable. He was understanding of my situation, even if he knew who I was and my role in the pack. In this time, werewolves and the rest of the species
AUTUMN:The dress felt so heavy in my hands and automatically returned it to the beta. Brows furrowing, I stared back at Beta Maddox, while trying to wrap in my mind why the alpha would suddenly act like we were best friends. Giving me this dress so that I could attend the party? What's his reason? To taunt me? To make fun of me? To make my life even more miserable? We were in the past, but not anymore. Omega's were not forbidden to attend the party. Everyone was invited to join. “Why did you return the dress?” he asked. “Did you not hear what I said? This was a gift from the alpha. Refusing this meant you were not acknowledging him as your superior which could cause serious consequences on your part as an omega.”I heard it loud and clear. It was from the alpha. But the question was, why? What was more hurtful about being rejected by my mate?‘I told you to move on and look for our second chance mate,’ my wolf reminded me. ‘Stop acting like this.’Sighing, I said, "I don't underst
AUTUMN:The beta’s shout of pain continued to explode like wildfire shattering the silence of the hallway. As much as I did not want to feel any worry for him, I could not help it. His shouts seemed like he was being skinned alive. No wonder Beta Maddox does not want to get treated by Mika. It was because of this.“Hey. Tell me the success rate of healing the beta?” I asked.“You’re worried for him,’ he said matter-of-factly. “Alright. Fine. Yes, I am worried even if I should not be feeling it right now. I hated him. I hated how he rejected me, but dammit. I am not that heartless. I still feel sorry for him right now.”“Maddox had the same reaction when it came to this. But we can be rest assured that he is fine in Mika’s hands.”“Are you sure?”“I am sure.”“You seemed to trust that woman a lot. Is there something going on between you and her in the past?”He glanced at me while his eyes narrowed. “Is that jealousy I hinted at in your voice?”“Of course not! I would never get jealou
AUTUMN:Maddox’s changing his mind about me? That was the most ridiculous thing that I ever heard right now. Why would he change his mind? What happened that I did not know at all? Using the shoes of my heels, I pointed it on the floor. “Tell me. Did he bump his head or something?”“No.”“So that’s the answer, Hugh. Beta Maddox did not change his mind. Maybe…I did not know.”“Then how would you explain how he changed his mind? He did not want to sever his bond. Which might only meant one thing. He changed his mind. Maybe his feelings when we were children returned.”I threw back my head and laughed. “What the fuck, Hugh?” I asked if I was done laughing. “If you’re going to say something, at least you should anchor it to reality. Maddox never changed his mind.” Making my expression serious, I said, “Let’s forget about this and focus on his healing. Let's waste our energy on that. You needed Maddox on the pack while I don't want to continue visiting him anymore.”It would only give
AUTUMN:With all eyes on Hugh, it seemed that his tongue had retreated. Then, a couple of minutes passed, and he answered, "Yes. I will be shouldering the expenses. Charge everything to me."Mika narrowed her eyes. "Why? Are you her second chance mate?"I coughed and said to change the conversation, "Now, now. It's not about me, but Beta Maddox. Why don't we return to our previous conversation and start healing the beta? So that he could return to the pack house? A lot of warriors might be missing him."Mika clapped her hands. "Alright. I agree. We lost so much time. Beta Maddox, can you handle the severing of your bond?"Secretly, I sighed in relief. "How will you do it?" I asked, plainly curious. Mika smiled. "It's not that simple. I will cast a spell. Others use a potion, but the chances of success are slim. If you want your money not to be wasted, let's go work on casting a spell. But I want to make it clear that there would always be a risk.""What kind of risk?" I asked, sudde
AUTUMN:I felt weird all over because Mika shed tears for me. She did not know me. She did not know my past, so why was she overreacting? No female had ever hugged me like this. Back in my pack, all they did was either bully me or inflict pain on me. They hit me or kicked me whenever they wanted. Including Sabrina, Beta Maddox’s fiancee. But never like this. Now, as Mika continued crying, I couldn't help but feel…comforted. That someone knew my pain? That someone was able to empathize with me. This witch, hugging me was like giving me some kind of comfort, giving me butterflies on my stomach.I shook my head when I realized something. I should never get accustomed to this. This woman…she was a stranger. "There's no need to hug me," I said and pushed her away. There were tears in her eyes. "I'm so sorry for the waterworks. I'm an empath. I could also feel what you are feeling right now. You're heartbroken. I wonder why. Have you perhaps broken up with your lover? Or your mate?"My
AUTUMN:Maddox's reaction was far better than watching the newcomer. From the looks of it, it seemed that the beta did not like the woman at all. Good for him. I wanted him to squirm. I wanted him to be uncomfortable. Just because we had a truce did not mean I was all good to him. On the other hand, the interaction between the two was...how did I say it...interesting? I wondered what was the story between the two?"Autumn."My brows furrowed, realizing there was the alpha standing beside that woman. How come I didn't even notice him?Hugh’s expression darkened as if he was…mad? Again? For staying in the same room with the beta?‘Maddox and I did not do anything wrong,’ I said. ‘You think he has the time to fool around given his condition right now?’ I asked through our mind link, not hiding my annoyance. ‘Why am I even explaining to you? I do not owe you anything, Hugh. Please stop acting jealous because you're not being cute,’ I stated inside his head. ‘Could you blame me? My mate
AUTUMN:I forced a smile even if my heart was breaking apart for some unknown reason. It must be the bond that we shared. This should be cut as soon as possible, to avoid things like this. To avoid getting hurt like this. Again. “Good. So…when will your wedding be?”“Next month,” he said and coughed. Next month. Next month would also be six months of working in this house. Six months of taking care of the alpha's son. “Alright. I will be there at your service, Beta Maddox. I will be happy to be there as long as the price is right,” I declared, forcing my voice to sound cheery as much as possible. The corner of his lips lifted. “Everything should have a price, huh?”I gave him a half-shrug. “It should be. After all, it’s not easy to face Sabrina. I know why she wanted me. She wanted to rub on my face that she’s one lucky woman when you marry her.” I scoffed. “I will never forget what she did to me. Never.”“It’s your right,” he said. I turned around and watched the door when I fe
AUTUMN:Hugh loved me. He loved me? He loved me!The confession shocked me to the core and all I could do was watch him with wide eyes. When I did not say anything at all, he continued, "I loved you, Autumn and I am willing to risk everything to have you. I want to spend the rest of my days with you. I'm so sorry for taking this too long to say, but now, I am one hundred percent sure of my feelings for you."A confession coming from him was definitely not what I expected. "What about your mother? What about your family? What about your pack? What about Beta Maddox? What about the people around you?” I asked. His brows formed a straight line. "Just because I loved her does not mean I'm going to listen to her when it comes to relationships. You're my mate, Autumn and I will do my best to keep you in my life."A lump suddenly formed in my throat, and what happened earlier was temporarily forgotten.Hugh loved me. My mate loved me. Finally. "You're only confused, Hugh," I said after a
AUTUMN:That woman was definitely Eric's mate. But my question was, would his decision still be the same after claiming that he would still choose me even if he found his mate?"W-what's your next move?" I asked, clenching my fist. If he wanted to save her, I did not have any choice at all.We finally arrived at Hugh's house and pulled into the garage. "What else?" he asked. "I don't know any more about Autumn."He was confused and torn between me and that woman. "Hey. If you....if you're confused, don't choose me, okay?"He glanced at me using the rearview mirror. "What do you mean, Autumn?"I forced a smile. "You know what I mean, Eric. You know what I mean.”Before he could answer, I stepped out of the car and slammed the door shut. I heard the driver's seat door open until I heard him call me my name.Glancing over my shoulder, I saw Eric wearing a conflicted look on his face. I pitied him."I'm sorry, Autumn.""You don't have to say that. Like I said, you should think about cho
AUTUMN:Eric had found his mate, something which we did not expect at all, especially him. His eyebrows met, and I could see the visible worry on his face. Worry for this woman. My heart sank, and I bit my lower lip. Dang it. Why did I finally become sad? "Let's bring him to the hospital," I said when he just stared at the woman, completely mesmerized. "Just to be sure. She might have unseen injuries which we did not know at all."His eyes never left the woman, and he did not respond to me right away. I shifted my eyes at the woman. Curly red hair. Oval face and breast that perfectly molded her body. Despite her dirty appearance, she was gorgeous.Eric cleared his throat. This must be the first time he saw his mate. "You're right. Let's bring her to the hospital."Just as he was about to scope her in his arms, the woman's eyes snapped open until her eyes landed on Eric. First, it was confusing. Followed by fear when she realized all eyes were on her. My heart sank.I knew what w
