"What do you mean? Are you saying you want to sever our relationship? But I'm your son. You wouldn't!"

Evan's voice trembled with disbelief, and as the silence stretched between us, I could hear the fear creeping into his tone. "No! You can't do this! Even if you leave, you have to leave me some money.

"What about our house? What happened to the property deed?"

I couldn't help but smile, a bitter twist of my lips. "Your father lost it all. Have you forgotten?"

His face went pale, his eyes widening in shock. "That's impossible! Dad still has money in his foreign accounts—lots of it! Aunt Rena told me. I was going to be a rich kid!"

I regarded him with a mixture of pity and sadness. "What your father did was illegal. Now that he's in jail, all his accounts are frozen."
