Caterina.

Growing up, there was a game I played with my cousins before my dad made enough money to leave the slums.

We pretended we were princesses trying to escape the castle of an evil king.

I wondered what they would say when they learnt it was my reality.

The mansion corridors stretched endlessly before me, a labyrinth of gilded prison walls. My heels clicked softly on the polished floors, their rhythm muffled by the racing of my pulse. I'd memorized as much as I could during my earlier wandering, counting windows and doors, noting where the cameras hung like unblinking guards.

My only comfort was knowing Luca would be nowhere near me right now.

That bastard.

My jaw clenched as I thought about him. The way he leaned into me this morning, his hand brushing back my hair like I was some possession. His voice still echoed in my head.

"Loathe keeps things interesting."

Interesting?

Interesting would be watching him rot in jail. And if I could get out of here, I'd do everything in my power to make that happen.

I pressed my back against the wall, taking a deep breath to steady myself. A camera perched in the corner turned its mechanical eye lazily, and I waited for it to scan away before slipping around the bend.

My steps were light. Precise. With my heart hammering in my ears.

The mansion was deceptively quiet, but I wasn't stupid enough to believe I was alone. Luca's people were everywhere... watching, listening. The scent of polish and faint cologne lingered in the air, an oppressive reminder of the man who owned this fortress.

I was halfway down a long corridor when I heard voices ahead.

“Did you see her?”

I forced, my breath hitching.

Had they found out it wasn't me in that blasted space Luca had given to me as a room? Filled with clothing that probably belonged to some mistress or girlfriend?

Had they found Sofia?

What would they do to her?

The low murmur of two men carried through the air, their conversation growing louder as they rounded the corner.

"Yeah," one of them said, laughing. "The boss sure knows how to pick 'em. That's one hell of a piece of..."

"Careful," the other one cut in, his tone sharp but amused. “You’re talking about the boss’s snack. Don’t want to lose your tongue, do you?”

They both chuckled, and I had to grit my teeth to keep from storming out and punching them.

Snack?

Was that what they thought I was? Some trophy Luca had plucked from Alessandro to parade around like a prize?

Did they think I was some whore who wanted to sleep with him?

The thought burned, but I swallowed it down. Anger wouldn’t help me now.

“She must’ve been a hell of a fight for Alessandro to give her up, though,” one of them added, his voice dropping slightly. “The guy was fuming when the boss left with her.”

I clenched my fists, resisting the urge to scream. "You're talking about me like I'm not a person, you idiots."

“Yeah, well,” the first guard said, “who cares? The boss gets what he wants. Always does.”

I was about to move... carefully, quietly... when one of them paused.

“Wait,” he said. “Did you hear that?”

Shit.

I ducked into the nearest door, easing it open just enough to slip through. The faint creak of the hinges felt deafening in the silence. My heart was in my throat as I shut it behind me and pressed my back against the wood, listening.

“Probably nothing,” the second guard said after a moment.

“Hmm.”

Their voices faded as they moved further down the hall. I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding, relief washing over me.

But then I turned around.

The room I’d entered wasn’t a room at all... it was a passageway. Cool air brushed against my skin, and the faint scent of fresh grass tickled my nose. A sliver of light spilled through an open doorway at the end, and I crept toward it cautiously, every nerve in my body on edge.

When I stepped through, the world opened up around me.

I was outside.

Well, guessed those guards were good for something.

A sprawling golf course stretched out before me, the pristine green lawn bordered by hedges and manicured flowerbeds. It was almost surreal, the open sky above me after hours of being trapped inside that suffocating mansion. For a moment, I just stood there, drinking it in.

And then I saw him.

Luca stood not twenty feet away, his broad shoulders unmistakable even from this distance. His dark suit was immaculate as ever, though the contrast of it against the soft greenery seemed almost absurd.

He wasn’t alone.

A tall, blonde woman stood with him, her hand resting lightly on his chest. She was beautiful in that icy, unapproachable way that made me instantly dislike her. Her smile was coy, and her lips painted blood red as she leaned closer.

I wanted to turn away, to keep moving before they noticed me, but I couldn’t.

Luca’s hand slid to her hip, then lower, resting casually on her ass as though it were the most natural thing in the world. And then their mouths met... slow, deliberate, like they had all the time in the world.

I felt a rush of emotions I couldn’t quite place. Disgust, anger, maybe even something close to betrayal. Not because I cared who Luca kissed, but because of the sheer audacity of it.

Here I was, risking everything to escape his clutches, and there he was, making out with some goddess on his private golf course like it was just another Tuesday.

“Fuck my life,” I muttered under my breath.

My voice was barely audible, but in the stillness, it felt loud enough to echo. I froze, my breath catching as Luca’s head turned slightly, his eyes narrowing as if he’d heard something.

Panic surged through me, but I forced myself to stay still, crouching low behind the hedges. My mind raced, weighing my options. If I made a break for it now, he’d see me for sure. If I stayed here, it was only a matter of time before someone noticed I was missing.

I clenched my fists, biting down on the curse that wanted to escape my lips.

Think, Caterina. Think.

Luca. The cool afternoon air kissed the back of my neck, a stark contrast to the warmth of the woman's body pressed against mine.Rissa. Her hands trailed up my chest with an eager familiarity, and I let her, though the effort not to recoil irritated me more than it should.Rissa had been predictable since the day I met her... a safe harbour in a world that constantly demanded sharp reflexes and unrelenting focus. The daughter to one of my father’s closest friends.I didn't need to explain myself to her, nor did I have to pretend I cared beyond what was required. She gave without expectation, though I knew she wanted more. Her laugh was soft and breathy as I trailed kisses down her neck, my hand skimming the curve of her hip."You missed me," she murmured, her tone tinged with smug satisfaction. This was something the group chat would hear about later. I didn't respond. The statement was a lie, and I wasn't in the habit of feeding fantasies. Tonight, she was little more than a distr

Caterina."You're full of surprises, aren't you?"The hum of the estate's grand clock echoed through the room, marking the start of a new day.But for me, the new day felt like nothing more than a cruel reminder of yesterday's mess.I woke up to the softness of the sheets, the strange emptiness of my surroundings, and the lingering taste of my frustration. The betrayal by Sofia weighed heavily on me, but I couldn't afford to dwell on it.I had to focus. But damn it, how could I not feel betrayed?I had trusted her. Or at least, I had believed she was someone I could trust. The thought was suffocating. It could ruin me if I let it, so I shoved it to the back of my mind, pretending it didn't exist. There were more pressing matters now... more pressing than feeling sorry for myself. I had to play the part, even if the game felt more like a trap than anything else.As I sat up in bed, I noticed something new. On the chair beside me was a set of clothes, neatly folded and placed there lik

Caterina.Goodness!I had to keep my steps measured, and a leisured pace as I walked the vast grounds that was Luca's perfect estate. It would do me no good to appear in a hurry, not when those guards patrolled these perimeters with watchful eyes, and the stupid cameras were positioned in such a wag that they documented my every movement. It was all a performance though. One I played out carefully, studying my surroundings under the guise of idle curiosity. At least he didn't lock me in that cursed room.Luca had money... the kind one could only hope to make through generations of work. And all that showed in his estate. Horrible thing was a labyrinth of neatly trimmed hedges, grand fountains, and paths winding toward different corners of the property. A paradise, but an extravagant one nonetheless. And a cage for me.The thought was almost enough to make me turn around that instant, before I caught sight of someone standing by the marble fountain ahead. Blonde hair, expensive heels

Caterina. If I was being honest with myself, I had spent... two, three, four days... in this hellhole without any member or that silly Alessandro doing anything about it.Was this what my life had come to?A series of carefully moving through the estate, keeping my steps quiet as I approached the narrowed path I had noticed earlier. Blondie must not have mentioned it to Luca because it was exactly like I had left it. Tucked away, half hidden behind thick ivy and a line of perfectly sculpted hedges. My best shot at slipping out unseen. Of course, the guards were still stationed out, but they all had blind spots, small ones. Spots that I had been watching long enough to know when they looked away.My fingers curled into fists at my sides as I took a deep breath, forcing myself to stay calm. I could do this. I had to do this.Tip.Toe.Tip.Toe.Tip...I heard something.A low murmur of sorts, a hushed conversation that the wind carried. No, no, no. Who was having their conversation t

Luca.Diabolical.Many would call me diabolical for what I did, but I needed to knock the little dare devil down a peg.I stepped into the now dimly lit room, my eyes immediately falling on the curled up figure on the floor. Caterina. She was a mess of tangled limbs, her body hunched in on itself, as if she was trying to shrink away from the world. Even in sleep, she looked absolute exhausted–tear tracks still visible on her face, while her breaths came out in soft, uneven gasps. One of her hands was curled near her chest, her nails faintly digging into that palm.I couldn't help the sigh. She’d cried herself to sleep.I had no idea why this irritated me the way it did. This should have been expected. She wasn't the first person to scream at me, to bang on my doors, to resist when the walls started closing in. She wouldn't be the last. And yet…I scrubbed a hand over my jaw, suddenly recalling the conversation from earlier. Natasha had been on my property today and practically ambush

Caterina. That feeling when it seemed like someone was hacking away at your brain with a machete... that horrible, brutal thing. That was how I felt.I had woken up with a sharp inhale, my entire body stiff as I blinked rapidly at the ceiling above me.There was a soft mattress beneath me, while a blanket offered me warmth while being draped over me.I did not remember falling asleep here.I was on the floor last night, screaming and cussing at that asshole so he would open the door... then I curled in on myself and allowed the exhaustion take me.How...My eyes flickered toward the open door.Open?Someone had been in here. Someone had come in while I was completely vulnerable and...I sat up too fast, a dizzy spell washing over me, but I steadied myself with a breath.No.No one had done anything to me. I was still in my clothes, my shoes had been taken off, but that was all. I searched around, looking for any sign of who had entered, though the answer was obvious.Luca.The little

Caterina.Ten whole minutes.I stood frozen for ten whole minutes just staring at the silk and the lace creation that had been draped over the chair in my room.It was a dress...Could it even be called that?A scandalous, provocative red dress that looked like it had been designed with sin in mind. The deep plunging neckline, the dangerously high slit running up the thigh, the sheer panels that barely left anything to the imagination. This was a masterpiece for temptation and degradation.Oh, how I wished Luca was here so I could strangle the living daylights out of him. This was his stupid way of controlling me, of forcing me to play whatever twisted game he had planned for tonight. I couldn't help but curl my fingers into fists as the overwhelming urge to rip the dress apart surged through me.Ohhhh... I could see his reaction now. The nasty smirk, the amused glint in his dark eyes, the way he would love knowing I lost control because of him.No.I wouldn't... couldn't give him the

Caterina.I barely felt the floor beneath my heels as Luca led me away from the ballroom, his hands still firmly gripping my waist. The stares, the whispers still came.Everyone with half a brain could guess what we were about to do.When we got outside, the air became even cooler, quieter, but my blood still burned.I wasn't drunk enough to forget the whispers, the way Alessandro’s hand had fit so perfectly against the woman's waist, as though he had never held me.Never known me.Okay, this wasn't the time to act like we had been the ideal couple, or I had some sort of feelings for him.But still... how long had he been cheating on me?I was going to erase it all. Erase him. And Luca... my stupid and horrible captor was my best option to do that.Maybe when we were done, and he was totally spent, I could even run away.He pushed open the door to a smaller room at the end of the hall, the dim lighting casting shadows across the dark leather armchair in the corner, the mahogany desk a

CaterinaI wrapped my arms around myself, resisting the urge to shiver as Luca remained stubbornly in my doorway. The rain had started to pick up, thick droplets smacking against the roof like it held a grudge against it.Luca had to leave soon.I had been expecting this confrontation… It was Luca we were talking about. I just didn’t expect it so soon, nor had I expected this level of relentlessness.“You need to leave.” I said firmly, despite the fact that my nerves thrummed harshly inside.Luca tilted his head slightly, amusement flickering in those eyes of his as he leaned against the frame like he belonged there… belonged here. “I was under the impression that wasn’t an option.”“When the heck did…”The rest of the words died in my throat as a sudden movement at the end of the hall caught my eye. A figure. Masked. He was watching us.Luca, ever the observant one, sensed the shift in my focus because I could see his body tense, eyes snapping to where mine had been. In a blink, the

Caterina. What was that blinding light?Fuck. My head felt heavy, my limbs sluggish as if my body had sunk deep into the mattress and decided it preferred staying there. My fingers curled against the fabric beneath me which for some reason felt familiar making it comforting. It smelled like lavender and something warm.. It smelled like home. But it wasn't until I shifted, feeling the tightness of the fabric against me that I realized...I was still in last night’s dress. What the heck?I had to take quick, short breaths while blinking hard against the sleep crusting my lashes, turning my head to take in my surroundings. High ceiling, the bookshelf overflowing with untouched books, the dim glow of the bedside lamp I never turned off.I was home.Sometime in the chaos of last night, I'd made it back. "Urghhh. My head." The groggy sigh escaped my lips, forcing myself even more to stay upright while the dress crumpled around me in a mess of wrinkles.I hope that wouldn't offend Maria.M

Caterina.“What the fuck did you think you were trying to do?”Someone’s blood had splattered across the concrete, a stark contrast against the pale moonlight. Then there was the sickening crack of knuckles meeting flesh that echoed in the empty garden, drowning out the distant sound of the music from inside.I felt like I was about to lose my dinner. When it came to fighting, I stayed away. Even on the days Alessandro tried to make me go to his boxing house so I could meet some of his friends, I always found a way to make sure I did not go. It was way better to lie than tell him the truth. This was the third real fight I had witnessed.Luca was a storm, his fists relentless as they pounded into Ethan’s face. His blonde hair was matted with blood, yet that annoying smirk of his refused to fade, even as his body went limp beneath the assault. All I could do was watch.I should stop him. I knew it. But something coiled within me refused to move, as if it held onto the nerves that were c

Caterina.I stared at the message for a few minutes longer, really unsure how I was going to pull this off.Luca: I have a little deal for you, amorino.I snorted. Of course, he did. Just after the blonde... no, Rissa had stormed out of here without sparing a glance in our direction.Luca had sent it with no context, no follow-up. But the moment I responded, his next message came though, spelling out exactly what he wanted.Luca: If I can get you to kiss me again tonight at the ball, then you'll spend a night with me in my room.A ball.A formal event where he expected me to be his date for the night. He even attached a number to it... a sum so high that it could put a serious dent in the sixty million debt my father owed him.Should I do it?Would I even be able to resist the man for that long when he was impossible to resist? But a way out, even if just a little closer, was really tempting."But the last party..." My mind whispered to me. I remembered the way the whole thing just

She wasn't among them.I had barely stepped out of the shower, and the towel still slung low around my hips when my bedroom door swung open.Had Caterina come for a second round of our little pillow fight? Or was it my...Nope. It was Clarissa. She stood in the doorway at first, those sharp eyes raking over me like she owned me, like she still had some chaim over my body.Something close to disappointment coiled in my stomach.Had the girls seen her?"Luca," She practically purred, stepping forward before I could say a word, her heels clicking against the polished hardwood. "You just ran off before we could get into the fun stuff last night. That's not like you."I didn't bother to respond. Caterina.Never considered myself as someone who could make friends easily.Growing up as an only child turned me into someone who was always guarded, with walls built so high fast even I sometimes forgot what it was like to let someone in.Maria... Maria was different. In certain ways, she was even like Alicia. There was an ease to her presence, something so unapologetically warm that it chipped away at the carefully placed barriers around my heart. She was funny, sharp, and had this undeniable charm that her brother certainly lacked. It made it difficult not to like her. So, against all odds, I found myself enjoying her company.Even if that company came with a surly faced Raphael who didn't act as a shadow. We sat on the plush couch in Luca’s expansive living room, the air thick with the scent of expensive cologne and faint traces of Maria's floral perfume. Caterina.Something sharp was poking my stomach.Well, it wasn't sharp, but it was firm. Heavy. Unmoving and warm. What was that?I stirred slightly, still half-asleep with a very sluggish mind. It felt like everything was moving in some sort of slow motion. This was so strange. And it was strange enough to pull her from the comfortable darkness of sleep, dragging me toward some sort of groggy awareness. The first thing I noticed was the warmth. A strong, steady warmth that surrounded me like a cocoon. There was a steady rise and fall of breathing against the back of my neck, the slow exhale tickling my skin.It took me a moment to realize that I wasn't alone. The second realization hit me like a freight train.I was wrapped in someone's arms.My eyes snapped open, the unfamiliarity of the room striking me all at once.Where...? When...?Then, I felt it again. The thing pressing into my stomach. What was that?Slowly, cautiously, I wriggled just a little, experimentally shifting again

Didn't even question where he was taking me.It didn't matter.Everything around me felt muted and distant, as though the world was spinning too fast, and all I could do was struggle to keep up.My chest ached, my head throbbed, and all I wanted to do was forget the past hours.I barely registered getting into the car, barely noticed the soft hum of the engine as he drove us through the city. All I could do was stare blankly out the window, watching the streetlights blur past, while my mind kept on playing the scene from the restaurant over and over again. The waitress’s sneer. The cold slap against my cheek. The way those people had recorded, whispering about me, judging me. And worst of all, the fact that I had let it get to me.Luca didn't speak. He didn't ask me if I was okay or try to do some shitty ass comforting. No new messages, no missed calls.A hollow laugh bubbled up in my throat. I shouldn't care about it. I didn't care about it.If anything, I only wanted to see if he would actually show up, if I had some kind of power over him.Yes. That was all.It wasn't as if I had been sitting here, waiting, like some desperate woman clinging to false hope.“Rina.”I glanced up at Alicia, who, for some reason, was watching me with raised brows and an amused expression.I couldn't help but roll my eyes before she even opened her mouth to speak. "Don't look at me like that."“Like what?” Alicia smirked, sipping her drink. “Like I can see through the act you’re putting on?”"There's no act," I muttered, crossing my arms.
