36: Someone was watching

I saw the explosion from afar, and my foot stomped on the brake. I wasn’t sure who was driving. Me or Otis? The sirens grew louder, and the fire trucks became visible as my car neared the restaurant where I dropped Elizabeth hours ago. I held my breath, my movement on autopilot.

The firefighters rained water on the source of the explosion. Fuck. The fire resisted for a few seconds but eventually succumbed.

Smoke rose to the sky, making my eyes water. I parked a few feet from the accident scene and covered the remaining distance on foot. The indistinguishable scents of rogues welcomed me. I looked around but was too distracted by the small crowd at the entrance to identify the main source.

My chest caved, and my breath failed as I tried Elizabeth’s number again. I should have refused. All it took were those fucking puppy eyes of hers. Elizabeth was nowhere to be found in the group helping to handle the mess, and her number wasn’t connecting. Waylen would kill me if so much

I wish you kept the original artwork. the image for the book is misleading. the story is good but drags a bit.
