Once in a millennium, the Phoenix will rise. The earth, the shifters, even the planet will call to her, pleading for her help. When they do, she always answers their call. Each time, she will choose a young woman who is deserving of carrying her fire, someone who is loving and caring, but with an inner strength that is difficult to break. Emmi Johnson is a human orphan who was kidnapped by The Mean Ones, grotesque shifters who wanted to create an army to destroy the elemental dragons and other hybrids. The dragons saved her and the others who were being held hostage, but the damage was already done. The Mean Ones were injecting her with their Komodo dragon DNA to make her into a shifter. The pain was excruciating, but the headaches that began soon afterward were worse. Ajax is a human runaway that was captured and experimented on by The Chief and Oliver. They injected him with earth dragon and elf DNA, turning him into a dragon hybrid. When Emmi senses chaos around her, something inside of her begins tearing at her insides. The screeching in her head makes her head throb. Ajax is the only one who can calm the fury inside her. Emmi is terrified that something’s wrong with her. Doc Everett can’t figure out what she is. That is until one day when the danger becomes so great that the Phoenix rises, melding itself to Emmi in a dangerous display of fire that is stronger than any fire dragon’s. Can Ajax help Emmi to find herself? Can she accept that she is no longer human, having been chosen by the ancient Phoenix? And can she become one with her shifter spirit before the danger that threatens them all comes for them?
View MoreI’ve just about finished packing up my room when Kenna strolls in.“What the hell is going on with the ... What the hell are you doing?” she asks me, taking in all the bags.I smile at her. “I claimed Ajax.”She stares at me for a moment, then closes the door slowly. Rather than be excited, she looks concerned.“How did you claim him?”“Well, I’m not sure.”“Phoenix? How did you claim him?”“Mutual submission, fire dragon.”“Mutual ... what they fuck does that mean?”“Hey baby, are you ready?” Ajax asks walking in without knocking. “Oh, sorry Kenna. I didn’t realize you were back.”“You’re claimed!”“Yep. OH and since you know, look at this!” he says excitedly, closing the door and ripping his shirt over his head quickly.Kenna’s mouth drops open, then she turns and looks at me. “And I thought fire dragons were possessive,” she says, walking up to look at him. “Is there even a spot on your body that ISN’T covered with her image?”“It’s just on the front,” he says, smiling in a way that
We spend some time talking to the others and Kano gets me some clothes that cover Phoenix’s markings on my body. For now, I’ll have to wear my shirts tight around my throat and down past my elbows. At least I can wear shorts, long shorts, but I can wear them.“I’m assuming you’ll want your own living quarters now?” Kaylani asks.“That would be preferable. You know how difficult it is to be apart from your mate,” I tell her.“Well,” she says, looking at my Dad. “We do have those rooms on the first floor. We can move the two of you into one of those until we can talk to Cedric about having his wolves build you a house. You’ll need to choose where you want your house,” she says.“I have some ideas of places that I want to show Emmi,” I say, smiling at her.“If you don’t think you can spend a night apart, I’ll make sure the room is made up for you tonight and you can move your things tomorrow,” Kaylani says.I look at Emmi. “It’s up to you. Is it too soon?” I ask her.I smile as she blushe
I had no idea sex would feel this good. I mean, I trusted Ajax, that’s why I gave myself to him. But everything I ever heard is that the first time is painful.‘I healed you as quickly as you tore, probably faster,’ Phoenix says, giving me pause.‘You healed me?’‘Of course. I didn’t want you hurt and I knew once I called to Ajax’s dragon that he would answer.’‘What did happen?’ I ask, just as Ajax lifts his head, propping his head on his hand as he looks at me, rubbing the area above my chest that is sore.“I submitted to you,” he says, looking up at me. “I’m your dragon now. No one can ever claim me.”“But you said ...”He shrugs. “Phoenix, care to explain?”“It was mutual submission,” she says. I frown, what does that mean?“Yeah, what does that mean?” he asks.“Wait! You can hear my thoughts?” I ask him.He smiles his gorgeous, breath-taking smile. “Yeah, I can. My smile is breath-taking to you?”I bite my lip and nod. “Why can’t I hear your thoughts?”‘Are you sure you can’t?’ he
AjaxI gather food to take to the mountain, asking the servers if they can pack it in a flight-safe bag. Since there are so many of us who have a dragon form, they’ve created insulated bags that keep food hot or cold during flights. While I wait, I look around, saying hello to friends. I notice that there is a lot more growling from the dragons tonight, probably because the elves all have that covetous look in their eyes. That’s how it always is when an elf claims a dragon, even if that elf is a hybrid. It’s the same with the werewolves, but they have the packhouse where they eat. Here, we’re stuck with the arrogant elves after a claim.“Going somewhere, Ajax?” one of the elves asks as he walks up to get food.“None of your business, Nesterin,” I say, more unfriendly than usual. The dragon in me doesn’t want to be claimed any more than a true dragon does. And since I have Avani’s DNA, I have quite the aversion to being claimed.“I hope to one day know what it feels like to ride on the
“This is bad. This is really bad,” Amne says. We’ve just heard the cheers go up in the Coliseum and since none of them were dragon trumpets, we know that Vaeril defeated Anala and has claimed his dragon. But that’s not what Amne is talking about.“Does anyone know what that actually was?” Ajax asks.“A scry,” Phoenix says. She’d found the magic and blasted it with her fireball before I could even blink.“What’s a scry?” Kenzo asks.“A way for witches to see what’s happening far away. They must have planted something here when they took your form, earth dragon,” she says.Tesha begins pacing, scrubbing her face before her head snaps up in the direction of the Coliseum.“Fen is sending Avani, Cedric, and Ishir. They’re on their way,” she says, just as I hear dragon wings above us and light footsteps headed our way.Avani lands first, just as Ishir and Cedric race up to us.“What the fuck’s going on?” Avani looks around, then nods as he realizes everyone here knows that my shifter is a ph
Yeah, I’m not surprised that everyone is as shocked as I was.“The phoenix is real? I thought it was a myth,” Kano says, staring at Emmi. I wrap my arm around her, making sure she knows that she’s safe. “I mean, I thought YOU were a myth," he corrects himself.“That’s why your fire is hotter than mine? Because you’re a phoenix?” Amne asks. Phoenix nods.“Why are we keeping this a secret?” Keagan asks astutely. We go on to explain about the times in history when Phoenix was called to rise, that Emmi and Phoenix are struggling to become one, and our concern if Cal and Eliane were to find out that their eggs are in danger.”“Uh, yeah, we definitely need to keep this a secret. Cal’s already scary as hell right now, snarling and growling at everyone. He even growled at you, Jax, when you passed by them earlier. If he knew someone was coming for his eggs ...” Kano says, shaking his head.“Wait. Is that what was going on with Kenzo the other day? There was a lot of commotion and then Avani an
After classes, I met Ajax downstairs in the big house. He said we’d walk over together to have dinner with his family. As always, the moment he sees me, his face breaks into a huge smile.“Hello, beautiful!” he says, kissing me, then taking my hand and leading me out the front door of the Big House. As usual, my mate says hello to everyone. I’m surprised when the dragons, at least, start to say hello to me as well.We walk around the Big House to the back where there is a dirt walkway up the hillside that leads to Kaylani and Everett’s house.“Hey Cal! Hey Eliane!” he says, waving at the two dragons as we pass the barrier around their eggs. Ancalagon bugles a warning, but Eliane trumpets a hello to him.We make our way up the steep incline and to the door just as I hear stomping feet and squealing behind us. I turn and Ajax pulls me out of the way just as Kano rushes past us with Amne on his back.“I’d told you we’d beat them,” Kano says to a laughing Amne.“Who’d you beat?” Ajax says.
I was nervous all throughout class and my instructors noticed, especially my father.“Ajax,” he called at the end of his human anatomy class.I jogged up to him, wanting to go check on Emmi. “What’s up, Dad?” It’s still weird to call someone dad, but I like it. Apparently, he does too because he smiles at me before answering.“Why don’t you tell me? You were very distracted in class today. That’s not like you.’“Sorry. Emmi’s working with Tana this morning and I’m anxious to make sure she’s okay.”He raises an eyebrow at me, wrapping an arm around my shoulder as we walk back toward the big house. “You don’t trust Tana?”“No, I do, it’s just ...” I huff out a sigh. “I do. But Emmi is struggling with connecting to Phoenix and the fire seems to be biggest issue.”“Then I’d say a fire dragon is the perfect being to help her learn that her fire can be controlled and calming.”“Calming? Fire?” I ask, raising my own eyebrow at him.He stops and turns to look at me. “Have you never sat by a ca
I was excited and nervous to see Ajax in the morning, but he welcomed me with a smile as he jogged over from talking to Kaylani.“So I got in trouble for last night,” Ajax whispers in my ear.I look past him to Kaylani.“How did she find out?”“The window was open ...” he says, watching me. It takes me a moment to realize that she’d heard me calling Ajax’s name while I was ... My eyes go wide and I’m pretty sure my face lights on fire.I cover my mouth with my hand. “I’m so embarrassed.”“Don’t be. She understands, but she says it has to stop. She can’t make exceptions to the rules and I understand that. So, let’s plan to go flying tonight. You did ask if we could do it again,” he says, smiling at me.I feel a different heat igniting in my core at the thought of having a repeat of last night. His eyes look past me and he straightens. “Hi Dion, Hi Sena,” he says.I turn and smile at them. “Good morning.’“Good morning,” they say, still looking wary about walking into the dining hall. I’
***This is Book Six of the Elemental Dragon series. References will be made to events that happened in previous books without being fully explained here. While this book can be read as a standalone, it is recommended that you read the series, starting with The Arena.***Every time I’m called to rise, I choose a human who is worthy. One whose heart is pure. One who is kind and loving. One who values the lives of others and is willing to give their lives to protect those around them. It has to be a human with these attributes because, while I always rise again, my humans do not.Over time, I’ve realized that when I’m called, there is always a human who stands out to me, one who calls to me in some way or another. This time, when I felt the call to rise, it was Emmi who called to me.She was an orphan, someone who never had a family, but who always stood up for the underdog. She was the one who would walk through the forest and help the creatures who were injured or trapped. They responde...
