The next morning, after breakfast with Ajax, I spend time with Dr. Everett. He is really a great doctor and he’s very nice. He’s working hard to try and figure out what’s going on with me, but I can see that he’s frustrated.“Emmi, how much science did you get in school?” he asks me.“Well, I went to classes when I was in foster care or group homes, but I never really lasted too long in any one place. So, probably not enough to understand what you are going to tell me.”“Okay, sit here,” he says, patting the seat beside him. He’s sitting at his computer workstation. There’s a lot of equipment in this room, but it seems to be very organized from what I can see.He begins flashing images up on the wall across from us. “This is DNA, it’s your DNA actually. It has a really long name that only scientists remember, so for us, let’s just call it DNA.”“Okay,” I say, looking at the staircase looking image on the wall.“DNA is like the roadmap for who you are. Without getting too technical, it
When I went to have lunch with Emmi, she was in my father’s office. I knocked on the door and was surprised when Kaylani answered.“Hey, I wanted to see if Emmi wanted to have lunch with me,” I said, looking past Kaylani and seeing Emmi looking very stressed out. “What’s going on?”I move past Kaylani and walk to Emmi, seeing images of DNA on the wall. Whatever my father has said has upset my mate. I don’t hesitate, I wrap my arms around her, pulling her to me.“Whatever it is, we’ll figure it out,” I whisper to her. She nods her head against my chest, and I smell the salt of tears. I look over her head at my father whose face looks grim.“Do you want to tell me about it?” I ask her.“Dr. Everett can,” she sniffles, her arms going around me and holding me tightly.I begin making crooning sounds, rubbing her back as my father explains what he’s found in Emmi’s DNA.I grit my teeth. I refuse to let this sweet woman die. I can feel my dragon’s protectiveness swelling inside of me. I’ll do
I watched the young dragon struggle to control her fire. My mate has very good control of his earth element, but when you mix elements, it takes both parties to keep the elements stable. Her fire was getting out of control and my Sunshine was at risk of getting burned, so I took control of her element. Since I’m not angry, Emmi didn’t fight me coming forward. She could feel my need to protect our mate. She doesn’t feel the bond as strongly as she will once our spirits combine, but she still likes Ajax a lot.Sunshine comes over, crouching in front of me. He reaches out and places his hand on my knee. “Are you okay, Emmi?”“Sunshine,” I purr at him.He looks up. “Well, it’s pretty sunny out. We’d planned to go flying today. Did you still want to fly?”“Yes,” I tell him. With him close, it’s easier for me to stay forward and Emmi isn’t fighting me right now, which also makes it easier.“I’ll be right back, stay here,” he says, standing and turning to the water dragon. Kaylani is her name
‘Did you hear all of that, my love?’ I ask my mate in our shared mind space as I watch Ajax take off with Emmi and whatever her shifter is, on his back.‘I did, my dragon. You need to speak to Yhendorn.’I turn to Kaylani. “We need to speak to Everett," she says.“Merethyl says we need to speak to Yhendorn as well.”“She called you young, Avani. A young dragon and she knew that dragons used to be older than elves. This isn’t a normal shifter.”“We already knew that, Kaylani. If Doc Everett can’t figure out what she is, then she’s not something that was alive in our lifetime before she was called.”Together we walk back to the main house. I look over and see Cedric’s wolves building a new medical wing. This one is more towards the front of the main house, where the old one was behind it. I have to give those wolves credit, they are master carpenters and they work fast.“Everett’s waiting for us,” Kaylani says as we walk.“KENNA!” I boom in my dragon’s voice.“WHAT?” she booms back, maki
I watch Emmi, or more correctly, her shifter. When I mentioned Cal repopulating the world with dragons, her eyes went unfocused.“Emmi?” I ask quietly. She turns and looks at me and the way she leans into me, I know this is still her shifter. My dragon feels the pull to this shifter, so I know that it’s her that I’m mated to, but Emmi is part of her, just as I am part of the dragon inside me now.“Were you created in a laboratory? Or did you awaken because of what happened to Emmi when she was with the bad hybrids?” I ask her.“No. I told the earth dragon and water dragon that I was called. That’s why I’m here.”“So Emmi was a human, like me, but now she has you, her shifter?”“That’s correct,” she says.I reach out and stroke her cheek. “What’s your name?”“I’ve had many names in my life, but over time, I felt it was just easier to take the name of my host. It’s less confusing that way.”“What does it mean that you were called?” I ask as she leans into my touch and my body. I need to
I’m not sure how my mate feels about me telling the others what she is and normally, I’d go to Ancalagon with something like this. Unfortunately, he’s been hovering over Eliane now that she’s pregnant and it’s not really a good time to talk to him. So, he’s not an option. I love my father and I know he’ll want to know what Emmi is, but he’s human, or mostly human now that he’s mated to Kaylani. What I need to ensure that my mate survives is the elemental dragons. All of them. When we get back, I land and shift quickly, grabbing my clothes where I left them and saying hello to the other dragons before taking Emmi’s hand and leading her to the medical center where my father is most likely in his office. Before we get inside, I hear them, my father and step-mother. It’s not the first time that I’ve come across them having sex, but it is the first time that I’ve been aggravated because I really need to talk to someone.I turn and look at my mate, still seeing the red rim in her eyes. “Fire
I wake up in my bed in the temporary hospital having no recollection of how I got here. The last thing I remember was being in class and watching Ajax and Anala practice combining their elements.‘Ask Ajax.’ It’s like there’s a voice in my head that just spoke to me. I look around my room.“Hello?”The door to my room opens and Kaylani walks in. “Hey, there she is. How are you feeling?”“Umm, good, I guess.”“You guess?”“I … I sort of don’t remember anything that happened yesterday afternoon. I don’t remember coming back to my room or going to bed.”“What’s the last thing you remember?” she asks and I tell her that it was being in her elemental manipulation class.“Ajax is bringing you breakfast. He’s asked if he can be the one to tell you about yesterday.”“Something happened?” I ask, getting nervous.“You don’t need to be afraid. Several of us talked to your shifter yesterday. She came forward. But she talked to Ajax the longest. Wait for him. He’ll explain everything. We have a mee
I feel like I’m really starting to recognize when it’s Emmi the human versus Emmi the Phoenix that is forward. Besides the red that rims her blue eyes, and the higher pitch of her voice, there is also confidence. Phoenix is extremely confident in who she is and what she can do. Emmi isn’t there yet, but I wonder if that will change once she and Phoenix connect.I know that the elemental dragons were interested in getting more information about the coming war, but my goal was to make sure that Emmi stayed forward. If these two are going to connect, she has to stop going into her trance-like states. She has to stop pulling so far back that she doesn’t remember what is said around her. So, I tried to help ground her and keep her forward. While it seemed like she struggled to do it, she maintained some level of consciousness. And when I asked Phoenix to step back, kissing her to let her know that I was proud of her and appreciate her stepping back, Emmi came forward almost immediately.“El
The mood around the Academy has just become very festive, aside from the few in our circle. Everyone is excited for the dragon babies, babies that they never thought would be possible. While the others get ready for classes, Ajax leads me back to the big house.“So, are you going to tell me what’s going on or what?” Kenzo asks.“Leave it be, Kenzo. We’re obviously not meant to know what’s going on. As it is, if Ancalagon hears that someone from the outside got in and was checking out his eggs, we’ll have a huge friggin problem on our hands,” Tesha tells him.“You said that the magic you smelled on me is what’s coming for the dragons. You knew that before Ishir and Tesha confirmed it. How did you know? What are you? King Yhendorn called you Phoenix and that’s what Ajax called you yesterday too. Is that what you are? A phoenix?” he asks, ignoring Tesha.Faster than I would have thought, Ajax grabs Kenzo and yanks him into an area where we have some privacy, slamming him against a tree.
Well, I just got a first-hand look at when and how Phoenix and Emmi disconnect. I thought we were making good progress and I’m very thankful that I was with her when she smelled Kenzo. The students are frightened enough by her. I don’t want them to start ostracizing her more than they already do. And I'm not completely sure that she wouldn't have hurt Kenzo.“Breathe. There is no immediate danger, Phoenix.”“You don’t know that, Ajax,” she says, her higher pitched voice sounding agitated.“Do you think that Avani would quietly begin fighting if someone were here to take his son’s eggs? He would announce the attack, and the battle would be on,” I say, trying to calm her down. I can feel her agitation, see it in the flames in her eyes and around her body. It’s not engulfing her body like it does when we kiss, but it’s moving around, going out and popping up in new spots.“How did the wolves miss it? They should have smelled the scent that I did.”“Your sense of smell and sense of danger
I like the fire dragon hybrid. She’s powerful, as all fire dragons are, but she also has an air of authority to her. That’s the Lycan blood in her. But because she’s a dragon, she’s inherently kind and loving. It seems funny to say that a creature that can breathe fire that is hot enough to melt a person into nothing is kind and loving, but it’s true. It’s one of the reasons that I’m mated to dragons so often when I rise. She’ll be good for Emmi, I think. A good friend and ally, someone she can trust.“Ajax!” Kenna calls out and Emmi turns to smile at him. His answering smile is beautiful. I almost miss it because of the earth dragon behind him. I frown as he walks away. Something is off with that earth dragon. We met him before, Kenzo is his name. I want to see where he’s going, but Emmi is focused on Ajax. The moment Ajax takes us into his arms and his lips press against ours, I forget all about anything and everything else in this world. I let my love and passion for Ajax flow throu
“Are you sure about this Lilith?” I ask her again. What we’re doing is risky. Lilith’s magic is powerful, I don’t doubt that, but this could mean my death if we get caught.“I told you that if you aren’t comfortable doing this, that we’ll find a female and I’ll do it. The only reason I suggested him in the first place is because he seems to know everyone,” she says. “But there are females who also seem to know everyone. That fire dragon with the black stripes is a good example. If she didn’t spend so much time with that elf, I’d have suggested that we use her.”“He’s not just any elf, Lilith. He’s an Elf King. He’d notice the moment something was off with that dragon. I didn’t see a mark on his chest that he’d claimed her but you never know,” I say. I realized that the elf was related to the elf princess who helped release me from the laboratory then refused to help me get home.“They’re probably mates and he’s just waiting until he knows he can claim her,” she says.“Why wait? Then so
I quietly follow her while people nod at Tana and give me side glances.“Hmm, I think I understand why my daughter was getting aggravated. I’m getting annoyed at this group too. I’ll have Cedric talk to them," she says. When we get to the room, it’s like a huge closet with boys clothing on one side and girls clothing on the other.“Not all packs are wealthy enough to supply enough clothes for their wolves. When they come to school, we want them to feel like they’re equals. So, we collect clothing and periodically the packs will donate clothing,” she says, turning to look at me, her eyes going up and down my body.“We don’t have a lot of small sizes that aren’t in children’s clothing, but let’s see what we have. Do you have a preference? Dresses, pants, jeans, shorts?”I shake my head, no.“Whatever you have is fine,” I tell her.“Your eyes are a softer shade of blue than Cedric’s, but I think that this dress would go good with your hair and eyes. Why don’t you try this one on,” she say
“Do you have anything that you need to bring to our room?” Kenna asks me excitedly.“Uh, not really. Just a couple of outfits that Kaylani and Everett got me.”“Ohhh, we’ll go to the packhouse. They have clothes there. We’ll find some that fit you,” Kenna says, taking my hand and leading me away.“Breakfast at 7am, Kenna,” Ajax calls after her.I turn and look at him, but he just winks at me.“Did you heard that, Yhen?” Kenna yells at him.“I’ll see you in the morning, my mate,” he says, his voice as regal as his stance.“Hey, is what he found bad?” I ask her.“No, it’s interesting,” she says, looking at me. “I’ll tell you tonight, if you want to know. You may feel better hearing it if Ajax is with you, though.”Kenna confidently leads me to where her father has built a packhouse onto the Academy’s lands. I’ve only ever seen this place from afar, but I have a weird sense of déjà vu when we walk up.‘I was here with Ajax a couple of days ago,’ Phoenix’s voice floats into my mind. ‘You w
I lead Emmi to the hospital where I’m sure my father and Kaylani are. My father has been running tests on Dion and Sena since the attack. I’m sure they struggle with that. Unlike the rest of us who had others to comfort us, no one wanted anything to do with them, not trusting them after they attacked us with The Mean Ones.Emmi’s idea of letting Phoenix tell us if they’re lying is genius. Phoenix does seem to have an understanding of things that the rest of us do not. I don’t know if it’s because she’s a phoenix and is, therefore, more attuned to the world, or if it’s because she’s lived so many lives, but she does feel and know things that the rest of us don’t.Once we’re inside, I follow my nose to where my father and Kaylani are talking to Dion and Sena. They both have earth dragon and elf, like me. So, both of them have access to the earth element. They’re both teenagers which, I’m sure, is why Kaylani wanted to help them. Well, that and we know how The Mean Ones did hurt others. B
All that talk of mating has me very embarrassed. I mean, I understand the concept of how babies are made, but this is different. The feeling that I got from Phoenix was passionate coupling that will feel better than anything I’ve ever felt before.I did catch her feelings of her time with her previous mates as she was talking to Ajax though, which has me confused.‘How does that work? You had other mates, but now he’s your mate?’ I ask her.‘Every time I rise, I have a new mate, a new bond. My previous mates all died long ago and while I remember them, when I die, the bond between us breaks. I remember the love that I felt for them, but even if they were alive, I wouldn’t feel it for them now. In this time, in this place, Ajax is my mate. Our mate.’How does she not feel the jealousy that I feel?‘Because I accept that we are one, Emmi. Once you do, you’ll see how easy it is for our emotions and our minds to connect.’I think about that and how her fire didn’t burn me, but it still mak
The moment the words came out of my mouth, I knew it was the wrong thing to say. Phoenix already told me that Emmi is afraid of her fire, and yet, I was so mesmerized once again by seeing my body engulfed in flames that it came out of my mouth before my brain could stop me.As soon as she opened her eyes, they went wide as saucers, the scent of her fear spiked all around me, and she began screaming as if she really was burning alive.“Emmi! Emmi!” I say, shaking her, trying to help her focus. When that doesn’t work, I do what comes naturally. I kiss her again. She doesn’t respond right away, flailing as if she’s trying to get away from me, but I hold her steady, using my dragon’s deep, resonating rumble to help her focus.I hold her face with the hand that was previously holding her hand and when she begins responding, I deepen the kiss. I can tell the difference between their kisses. Phoenix’s kiss is more confident, more experienced. Emmi’s is tentative, unsure, but still willing. So
