Jasmine’s POV

I was unable to keep to my word to meet up with Lena later that night.

After crying my eyes out in Regan’s arms, I had fallen asleep in his arms and he had been the one to carry me to my room and tuck me into bed.

That night, I had a dream.

I dreamt about my parents again.

It was the same dream as always.

The one where both my parents died.

But this time, something about the dream was different.

Everything else was the same, but when it had gotten to the part where my mother placed me on my father’s wolf, she had whispered words in a strange language and had run her hand over my back where my birthmark was.

After my father’s wolf had taken off with me on his back and I looked back to watch my mother, something I had always wondered about suddenly stood out to me.

She had not shifted into her wolf.

How had she remained in her human form and fought off all those wolves for as long as she had, all alone?

Not for the first time, as I woke up from the dream to take in the brightness of the new day, I had that thought that my mother had not been an ordinary she-wolf.

The fact that the dream was the only memory I could remember of her while I could recall some memories I had with my father was something I also wondered about.

Why could I recall some memories of my father but none of my mother?

Before I could ponder further on that thought, there was a soft knock on my door before it was pushed open to reveal Lena.

She walked in, shutting the door behind her and taking in my expression before making her way over to the bed and sitting on it.

“Did you dream of your parents again?” She asked, taking one of my hand in both of hers.

I nodded, trying to force a smile in order to ease her worry.

“Yes, but I am fine”, I told her, bringing my other hand to pat one of hers. “Do not worry about me”, I said before remembering. “I am sorry I could not meet with you last night”.

“Oh do not mind that”, Lena said. “Regan came to tell me that you had grown tired from your stroll last night and had gone to bed”, she assured. “You did not keep me waiting”.

Hearing his name made me recall the events that had occurred the previous night.

Against my wish, my cheeks flushed with heat and I looked down to try to hide my face from Lena.

My effort was wasted since she noticed immediately.

“From the look on your face, I can tell that something must have happened on your stroll”, she said with a teasing smile on her face.

When I withdrew my hands from hers to cover my face, she dissolved into giggles.

“Tell me everything!” She insisted, climbing on the bed to lay beside me and wrapping her arms around me.

“There is nothing much to tell”, I tried to dissuade her.

“Oh I am sure that is not true”, she countered. “You wouldn’t be red as a tomato if nothing much had happened”, she teased. “So tell me everything”, she insisted.

I hesitated or a moment before speaking.

“He wants me to become his mate”, I finally said.

She froze before withdrawing her arms from around me.

Suddenly, the thought that she might not be pleased with her late sister’s mate wanting me as his mate suddenly crossed my mind.

What if she had only given her approval because she had thought whatever relationship Regan had wanted would be temporary?

I was suddenly nervous to hear her response.

She turned to me.

“And what did you tell him?” She asked.

I lifted my shoulder in a shrug.

“Nothing”, I said. “I just cried”, I said truthfully.

“Well, why would you do that?” She asked. “Would you not like to be his mate?”

I looked at her, seeing the earnestness in her eyes.

“I would”, I said, knowing it was how I truly felt.

“Then why did you not say so?” She asked.

Rather than answer her question, I asked her one of mine instead.

“Would you accept me as his mate?” I asked and continued before she could respond. “Your Luna?” I asked. “Knowing that it was meant for your sister? And knowing that I would never be strong enough?” I asked.

I refused to look away, or allow the tears that were already gathering in my eyes to fall.

She looked at me for a moment, studying every feature on my face before she finally responded.

“I would give anything to have my sister here again”, she said. “To have my family complete once again. But that cannot happen no matter how much I may wish it”, she said then continued. “I am grateful for the family I have now. For you”, she paused. “But if I could change one thing about you, it would be how you always see yourself as inferior”, she said.

I had not been expecting that.

“You believe you are weak and that is why you remain so”, she said and I let the tears fall, feeling my heart break. “A Luna cannot be weak”, she continued. “So I would advise, as your friend, that you stop seeing yourself as weak and inferior, and begin to see yourself as the future Luna of the Midnight Wolves pack, because that is who you will be”.

It took a moment for her words to finally sink in and for me to recognize them for the encouragement and acceptance that they were.

“Stop caring what others that do not know you or love you think”, she said. “Because to know you is to love you, so if they do not love you then they do not know you. You don’t need their acceptance, you need their respect. Once you have earned it, their loyalty will follow and that is worth more than their acceptance”, she advised.

“And you can be sure if my loyalty because it comes with my love which you already have”, she went on. “The way I see it, the only person in your way… is you”, she said and let that sink in before continuing.

“Will you at least try to believe In yourself?”, she asked. “Because it takes more than a wolf to make a werewolf”, she finished.

As she did so, I launched myself at her and tackled her into a hug as I once again broke down in tears.

I did not deserve her.

Neither did I deserve him.

Or Nana, or even Luke, or Mari, or anyone else who had showed me kindness since I had come into the pack.

But even if I did not deserve any of it, the Moon Goddess had taken pity on me and granted me all of it.

Lena was right.

It was time to stop feeling sorry for myself and to start appreciating the opportunity the Moon Goddess had granted me.

And that meant believing in myself.

I was more than a wolf less werewolf. And I was done believing otherwise.

“You would make a wonderful Luna”, I heard her whisper into my hair as her arms came around me. “And I will always be here whenever you need me”, she promised.

“Always”, she repeated.

“I do not deserve you”, I told her. “But I will thank the Moon Goddess every day for bringing you to me”, I said and pulled away slowly. “I need you. I cannot do this on my own”, I said, knowing she understood exactly what I meant.

“I will be there every step of the way”, she promised. “And we both know Nana will always be there for you too”.

I nodded, knowing it was true.

“I need to be stronger”, I told her.

“We can ask Luke to help train you”, she said. “He got his wolf quite late so he is great at combat in human form”, she said.

I paused to marvel at the thought that Luke, who was the best warrior besides Regan, had gotten his wolf late.

I saved that information to use in the future.

It would be nice to tease Luke about it someday.

I smiled at the thought before realizing something else.

“Regan will never let me train with anyone else”, I said, already knowing how possessive he was.

“Let me take care of that”, she said. “I can reason with Regan to let it happen”, she said confidently and added as an afterthought. “Rage might be a problem but I’m sure Regan will find something to keep him occupied while you train. He has to understand that it is important that you at least know how to defend yourself. Especially now”, she said and I completely agreed with every word that left her mouth.

I nodded.

“You are right”, I said.

She suddenly broke into a smile.

“What is it?” I asked, uncertain of what the smile could mean.

“A thought just crossed my mind”, she said, still smiling.

“Well, do not keep it to yourself”, I said. “Do tell”.

She let out a small laugh before she did so.

“Here we are making all these plans”, she said. “When Regan has not even been informed that you would like to become his mate”, she said and I realized that she was right, once again.

“He must be beside himself, wondering if you would refuse or not”, she said with a laugh. “Poor Regan”.

I gasped.

“My Goddess! You are right!” I exclaimed, climbing down from the bed and rushing to the chamber to clean myself.

As I hurried, the sound of Lena’s sweet laughter floated around my room from the bed where she laid waiting for me.

After I had finished getting dressed and cleaned, I and Lena made our way out of the house, well aware that we had missed the morning meal.

We made our way towards the pack house where I was sure Regan would be cooped up in his study.

However, when we got to the doors of his study, we were informed that he was not in. According to the warriors that stood guard at his study doors, he had gone to the fields to inspect the warriors and train with Luke as well.

So, arm in arm as always, we made our way towards the training grounds where the warriors trained daily.

We found him and Luke in the training grounds training and waited on the side watching until they were done.

When they caught sight of us, they made their way over to us.

Immediately he got closer to us, Regan immediately put his arms around my waist and pulled me to his chest to plant a kiss on my head.

“What are you doing here?” He asked as he released me and let me go but kept his arms wrapped around my waist.

“I came to give you an answer”, I told him, looking up into his grey eyes.

“Well?” He asked when all I did was continue to stare at him.

“If you would have me”, I began. “I would be honored to be your mate”, I said finally.

Immediately the words left my mouth, he swept me off my feet and spun me into his arms.

I shrieked in surprise, laughing as I wrap my arms around his next.

Lena and Luke cheered loudly as he rained kisses all over my face and held me tightly in his arms.

I did not care that everyone had stopped what they had been doing and were not openly staring at our display of affection.

Lena was right.

There was no point caring about the opinions of those that did not even know me.

I was going to live my life differently.

In a way I would never regret.

Instead, after the public display Regan had made after I had given him the news of my acceptance, the looks of disapproval had grown. I received glares wherever I went. And despite the fact that some of the pack members had openly accepted, even going as far as coming to congratulate me, it didn’t reduce the heat from the glares I could constantly feel directed at me whence I walked into a room. Regan’s POV Even though I did not like the idea of Jasmine training with anyone other than me, I had to admit that if there was anyone else I would ever allow train my future mate on the art of defense, then it was Luke. Her training had begun immediately. Lena was insistent that Jasmine started as soon as possible since we did not know how long it would take for her to learn combat in her human form. Luke came up with the idea of training her in secret, and since it was obvious how much she loved the sanctuary, we decided that it would be the perfect place for her to train. Luke complained and mumbled about having more work to do now that he would have to train my future mate that I had been left with no other choice than to reduce his previous work load. He had been so grateful that he had immediately decided to take a ‘much needed nap’ right there in the sanctuary and proceeded to resume his usual position. Luke had also insisted to have their training sessions at daw

Jasmine’s POV Lena had told me all about the coming of age ceremony. It was supposedly the night where the young pack members shifted for the first time. I had seen Luke training them so that they could endure the pain from shifting for the first time. Surprisingly, I had seen Regan as well. Even though Regan was much loved by his pack, there had always seemed like there was a distance he put between them and himself. He hardly ever related with any other pack members other than his family, Mari and his Gamma. Everyone else was dealt with from arm’s length. So it was a great surprise indeed to see him with a particular young werewolf time and time again. Whenever I passed by the field, I always caught sight of him and the young one, training. What surprised me other than the fact that he was personally training that particular young werewolf away from the rest of his friends and mates, was how much Regan smiled around the young one. I had seen him sever

Regan’s POV As Jasmine had said, I knew Emry would need me for his first shift. And since it was the day of the full moon, it meant that the ceremony would hold that night. I hadn’t seen him all day. Which was unusual since the pup barely ever left my side ever since we began our trainings. I had just finished my work for the day and was making my way over to the healing house, where I was sure Jasmine would be, when the thought of him suddenly came to mind. I had missed her all day and wanted nothing more than to see her, take her into my arms and bury my face into her neck to inhale her addicting scent. But I had not seen Emry all day and that worried me. So rather than go to find my future mate and satisfy my longing, I turned around instead to find the pup. I caught his scent easily and began to track it. It led me towards the woods not to far from the pack’s farm lands and I followed it to the outskirts of the pack, where the stream was, and finally to one of th

Jasmine’s POV While the ceremony took place, I was with Nana, Lena and a few other she-wolves helping set up places for the newly shifted werewolves for when they returned from their first hunt. Since I was indoors during the ceremony, something I knew for certain was planned by Regan to keep me out of any possible harm’s way, I watched the proceedings from one of the widows of the pack house not too far away. I had gone to the stream that morning with Lena to take a cool bath after my morning session with Luke. And even though I was sore all over, it was nothing compared to the pain I had experienced when I had started. It was now a feeling I welcomed in fact. I handed over the pile of black and red robes that the newly shifted werewolves were to change into when they returned from the hunt to one of the young she-wolves working with us. Her brother was one of the newly shifted werewolves and she had been noticeably anxious about his return. “It will all be fine, Amy”

Regan’s POV We returned to the pack from the hunt. A successful hunt. While we had caught a very big deer, the other warriors had caught other smaller animals. When we returned, we went down to the stream first to wash ourselves clean of the blood and dirt gotten from the hunt. Then we made our way to the back of the pack house where a large area was set up with tables and chairs in order to have a celebratory feast under the full moon. The newly shifted werewolves were given their new robes of black and red to change into before they went back to their respective families. I watched as Emry went over to meet his mother and a calm looking girl I guessed to be his sister, judging from the color of their dark hair. Seeing how happy they seemed for him, I turned away to look for the person I was most eager to see. My eyes finally found her to see her eyes already on me, watching me with a smile. Jasmine’s POV I have always wished I could read minds. Not for any particular reason other than to know what others were thinking sometimes. I hadn’t seen Sooni since our encounter in the pack house at the coming of age ceremony and when I had asked Lena, she had simply shrugged and said. “It’s better that you do not know”. That had done nothing to ease my curiosity but I knew better than to ask again. However, the topic everyone had started to ask about and discuss was my mating ceremony to the Alpha. Shortly after the incident with Sooni, Nana had started to insist the we pick a day for our mating ceremony and so, left with very little choice on the matter, we had. Regan had insisted on me choosing the day, saying that if I wanted to become his mate the very next moment, it would still be perfect for him. So, I had talked with Lena and we had finally decided on a date for the mating ceremony to take place. After announcing the date, I had barely heard any sentenc

Of course I knew it was due to her training sessions but other than Nana and Lena, no one else had any knowledge about that. I had noticed that Jasmine and Luke had grown closer. It was clear as day to see. Luke had even gone as far as calling her by a new name he had coined from her name. I had known him all his life and had yet to get the same treatment. It caused Rage to growl in jealousy each time we heard him call her ‘Jazzie’. Partly because we had not thought to do something like that, but also because it showed just how close they had become. However, seeing the smile on Jasmine’s face each time Luke called her that was enough to make me endure the annoyance and jealousy it brought. I was anxious for some reason. One reason if I was being honest. And that reason was simple. ‘What if Jasmine changed her mind?’ That though

Jasmine’s POV It was a surprise to everyone at breakfast the next morning to see Luke seated to Regan’s left, and the two thoroughly engaged in conversation. I am sure Luke’s mate was surprised as well because we shared a glance of astonishment before turning back to watch our mates interact. It was as though Luke had never left. The only difference was, when before it would be very obvious that they were both mind linking the other, it had now become that they would openly speak to each other. I secretly believed they did that so that Lena could see. If she saw and was affected by it, she hid it well, keeping a blank and almoubored expression on her face and only interacting with the ladies and her mate throughout the meal. It was the bored expression that let me know that she was indeed affected. Lena was never bored. If she was, she created something to entertain herself and others. Regan’s POV It had been three days since Luke came home and I could still feel the awkwardness between us. Lena had still not relented in her mission to pretend he did not exist and for the most part, I felt sorry for him. Lady Zara was getting along famously with the ladies, who went out of their way to include her in every activity they performed. They had even taken her to their favorite place at the stream and it was clear to see that Lady Zara was thoroughly enjoying her stay in our pack. For my part, I was mostly confused. I did not know whether to have Luke perform duties around the pack, just as I normally would. But it was not the same. I did not even know if o could still refer to him as my Beta. We had not had a single meaningful conversation since his return. On one hand, his mate was the last relative of the deceased Alpha of Redclaw pack, which meant that he could take up the leadership of the pack as its Alpha if he chose to remain there with her. O

I had known that Lena’s feelings had been hurt by Luke’s refusal to respond to the several letters she had sent him while he had been away. However, I had assumed that all would be forgiven once he returned home. I had assumed wrong. She had avoided seeing him all day and had remained in the privacy of her room until it was time for Supper. Then, she had emerged in all her cold beauty and proceeded to sit as far away from Luke at the dinner table in the pack house. She also wrote to inform me that she had written to her distant nephew, the Alpha of Moonrock pack, and encouraged me to write to him, assuring me of his acceptance to hear of my request. After receiving that particular letter, I wasted no time in writing to the Alpha of Moonrock pack, convincing Alpha Gaiu to do the same on our behalf. He readily agreed, if for nothing else but for his mate sake, I suspected. With his arm around my waist, my mate led us back to our home after our evening meal with the rest of the pack to welcome our warriors back. Mira had done an absolutely marvelous job at cooking up the most sumptuous meal for our supper. Everyone had eaten their feel and the mood was very merry. However, throughout the meal, Isla remained quiet as usual, only lightly conversing with Lena or other wise quietly watching and smiling to some antics the warriors did. Most of them were somewhat drunk and were obnoxiously loud. One thing that was clear to anyone with eyes was how much and how often most of the warriors who had returned -most of which were unmated - tried to gain Isla’s attention. At first, they had simply stared at her or passed her admiring glances. But once they started to drink, they grew bolder with trying to g

I waved away her thanks, taking her hand and bowing over it before bidding her farewell. Then I turned to Luke. Our goodbye was a very casual affair as we both knew each other well enough to know that we did not want to get affectionate or create a scene. So we limited our goodbye to a nod and a brief handshake and patting of shoulders.
