Jasmine’s POV

If I had thought the news that the Alpha of the Midnight Wolves pack wanted to make me his mate would put an end to the looks of disapproval from some members of his pack, I was wrong.

Instead, after the public display Regan had made after I had given him the news of my acceptance, the looks of disapproval had grown.

I received glares wherever I went.

And despite the fact that some of the pack members had openly accepted, even going as far as coming to congratulate me, it didn’t reduce the heat from the glares I could constantly feel directed at me whence I walked into a room.

But I had Lena who was determined to shoot daggers at everyone who so much as looked at me in any way she didn’t like.

Knowing I had her undeniable support was a big help. Especially since I had decided to quit being sorry for myself or seeing myself as weak.

Even though it wasn’t easy, I walked with my back straight and head held high, not willing to give them the satisfaction of making them see that their treatment of me actually bothered me.

One she-wolf in particular did not make things easy.

She would always whisper to whatever group of she-wolves she was surrounded by, openly throwing me looks of anger and disgust as she did so, or saying something -probably insulting - and making the other she-wolves laugh at me.

I acted oblivious, simply ignoring them and acting like they could not exist.

The amusing thing about the whole situation was that I had never even recalled having a conversation with the she-wolf in question. I had seen her around in the pack but had had no reason to even speak or engage with her.

It was the new situation I had found myself in that made me aware of her. Or more specifically, aware of her obvious dislike of me.

“Her name is Sooni”, Lena had told me as we sat on her bed, in her room one night. “I don’t really know too much around her since we do not realize mingle. But what I know from rumors that floated around at the time is that”, she informed. “It turned out that her mate was from Blackmoon pack. Once she found him and found out that he was from Blackmoon, she rejected him instantly”, she told me. “Some of the pack members admired her for her loyalty since they all figured it wasn’t easy to reject your own mate. However, I had always been a bit suspicious about her true intentions. We get up together even if we were never friends and never spoke. You knew I would never say something bad about someone without reason but I never liked her. Especially how I once saw her try to throw herself at Regan and then Luke”, she said. “My instinct is always right about people, you know”.

I nodded at that.

I don’t know how, but Lena could feel if people were good or bad.

Just thinking about it sounded quite ridiculous but it was true.

“She is the one filling the head of the other she-wolves with ridiculous notions and rubbish”, she told me. “But until she has the audacity to walk up to you and say something about it, I would advise that you continue to ignore her and treat her as though she doesn’t exist”.

I had nodded and taken Lena’s advice knowing it was true.

Rather than continue to talk about that, we concerned ourselves with how we would convince Regan -and Rage by extension - to allow Luke train me on the art of combat in my human form.

We discussed it and agreed that it would be better to have the conversation with Regan in a place Rage would be calm.

Rage’s sanctuary.

Surprisingly, Lena had never been there before, but I was sure that I could convince Regan to bring her along.

It still seemed unreal that Regan wanted to be my mate.

But I was not going to question the opportunity the Moon Goddess had given me.

I was going to take it without regrets.

I met Regan at breakfast that morning and after pleading with him briefly, he agreed to allow Lena come with us to his sanctuary.

When I had told him to please bring Luke as well, he had narrowed his eyes at me for a moment before rolling his eyes at me and agreeing.

I had given him a kiss on his chin as a form of gratitude. One he took immediate advantage of and stole a kiss from my lips.

We agreed to meet just outside the woods in front of the pack house after the midday meal.

The last to arrive was Luke since he was always very ‘busy’, something he didn’t let us forget on our walk to Rage’s sanctuary.

It had turn out that there was a shorter route to get to Rage’s Sanctuary, Regan just preferred taking the much longer route -especially when he was in wolf form - since it was a good way to get Rage to calm down.

Rage loved runs. And giving him an opportunity to run before coming into his Sanctuary was always a way to enhance his mood.

However, since I couldn’t shift into my wolf form and Regan wanted me to become familiar with the way to get there quickly so I could go there whenever I wanted, we walked instead.

When we arrived at the sanctuary, Luke immediately went behind the large tree and shifted into his wolf, reappearing a moment later to take his usual position.

Laying beneath the tree.

Before Lena could look around and finish admiring the serenity of the place, Luke had fallen fast asleep.

Laughing softly at how that was such a thing Luke could do, I turned to see Regan seated on the fallen trunk of a tree and watching me.

He had been watching me as I watched Lena.

He stretched a hand out towards me for me to take and I immediately moved towards him.

I took his hand and allowed him pull me onto his thighs.

His arms immediately came to wrap around me and he buried his head into my neck.

Before I could loose myself in his arms, I turned sharply towards the sound of someone’s throat being cleared.

I had all but forgotten about her presence in the serene space.

She gave me a look that reminded me of our purpose for coming in the first place.

I withdrew from Regan’s embrace and he reluctantly let me go.

I moved towards Lena and took her hand before we both turned to face Regan.

He eyes out joined hands before looking up at us warily.

“Why do I suddenly have the feeling that I am not about to hear pleasant news”, he said.

Lena laughed.

“We are not hear to deliver any ill news”, she said.

“But I am not going to like whatever it is that has you both holding hands, will I?” He asked with a lift of one of his eyebrows.

She turned to me and we both smiled.

“It is only a simple favor we wish to ask, dear Regan”, she said.

He shut his eyes as if in pain a brought his hands to rub between his eyes.

“Nothing good ever follows you calling me ‘dear’, Lena”, he said.

“What is it you both want?” He asked directly.

“Well”, Lena said, drawing her words as she looked at me briefly. “I and Jasmine were talking. And we decided that as future Luna, it is important that she knows how to properly defend herself”, she said.

“She does not need to defend herself”, Regan said immediately, a frown coming to his face immediately. “She has me. She will always have me to protect and defend her”, he said firmly.

“I know that, Regan”, Lena said. “But you will not always be there at every moment to keep her safe…” she argued.

He cut her off immediately.

“I will always be there at every moment to keep her safe!” He snapped, rising to his feet in anger at her words.

“No, you will not!” Lena snapped back.

I had never seen her raise her voice at Regan before and simply stood in surprise, wondering how it had all gotten to that.

Even Regan looked momentarily surprised at her reaction.

“As much as I know you wish to believe that you will always be there, the truth is you will not”, she said. “You cannot control everything that happens in the unit no matter how much you wish it”, she told him. “It is impossible. And as much as you wish to keep her safe, I wish the same more than you can ever imagine.”, her voice started to sound shaky. “I have already lost one sister”, she said. “I will not loose another”.

I watched a tear roll down her cheek and felt my heart break at the sight.

I took her hand holding mine into both of me hands and squeezed in reassurance, trying to comfort her as much as I could.

Regan, on seeing her tears, moved from where he stood to take her into his arms and brush the tear away from her cheek.

“I just want her to be safe”, she whispered to him.

“I want that as well”, he said, placing a kiss on her head.

For a brief moment, I wondered if Luke was truly so deeply asleep that he heard nothing of what was going on, or is he just pretended to still be asleep simply because he did not wish to get involved with whatever was happening.

Knowing Luke, I was almost certain it was the latter.

“Very well”, Regan said, pulling away from Lena. “I will teach her how to defend herself”.

“That is another thing we wished to ask you about”, Lena said. “I know for certain that you will be a fine teacher to teach Jasmine on how to defend herself”, she flattered. “However, I believe that she should receive lessons on how to properly defend herself in her human form from someone who was used to defending themselves in their human form for quite a while before they had gotten their wolf”, she said, eyes straying towards where Luke’s wolf laid, feigning sleep as he pretended not to hear her subtle insult and teasing.

“Certainly not”, Regan refused firmly. “If there is anyone who will teach Jasmine then it will be me”, he insisted.

“You may teach her as well if you want”, Lena said. “But if she is to learn how to properly defend herself, there is no one better to teach her than Luke, and I am certain you secretly agree with me”, she told him.

Regan grew silent, obviously not liking the suggestion but having no choice but to agree to the wisdom of Lena’s words.

“As much as I hate to agree”, Luke’s voice came from behind the tree and we all turned to look at him as his head poked out from behind the tree. “Lena is right”, he said. “I can teach her thing you cannot possibly do. And you have my word that I will teach her all that I know and by the time she is done, she will best even you in her werewolf form” he promised.

Luke’s words were all we needed to succeed in convincing Regan to agree to our wish.

Seeing that he was clearly defeated, Regan hung his head and finally nodded.

“Very well then”, he said again before turning to look at Luke’s head sticking from behind the tree. “If she gets hurt in any way I will not forgive you”, he said.

Luke nodded his acceptance.

“I agree”, he said.

And that finalized the plan to begin my training.

Her training had begun immediately. Lena was insistent that Jasmine started as soon as possible since we did not know how long it would take for her to learn combat in her human form. Luke came up with the idea of training her in secret, and since it was obvious how much she loved the sanctuary, we decided that it would be the perfect place for her to train. Luke complained and mumbled about having more work to do now that he would have to train my future mate that I had been left with no other choice than to reduce his previous work load. He had been so grateful that he had immediately decided to take a ‘much needed nap’ right there in the sanctuary and proceeded to resume his usual position. Jasmine’s POV Lena had told me all about the coming of age ceremony. It was supposedly the night where the young pack members shifted for the first time. I had seen Luke training them so that they could endure the pain from shifting for the first time. Surprisingly, I had seen Regan as well. Even though Regan was much loved by his pack, there had always seemed like there was a distance he put between them and himself. He hardly ever related with any other pack members other than his family, Mari and his Gamma. Everyone else was dealt with from arm’s length. So it was a great surprise indeed to see him with a particular young werewolf time and time again. Whenever I passed by the field, I always caught sight of him and the young one, training. What surprised me other than the fact that he was personally training that particular young werewolf away from the rest of his friends and mates, was how much Regan smiled around the young one. I had seen him sever

Regan’s POV As Jasmine had said, I knew Emry would need me for his first shift. And since it was the day of the full moon, it meant that the ceremony would hold that night. I hadn’t seen him all day. Which was unusual since the pup barely ever left my side ever since we began our trainings. I had just finished my work for the day and was making my way over to the healing house, where I was sure Jasmine would be, when the thought of him suddenly came to mind. I had missed her all day and wanted nothing more than to see her, take her into my arms and bury my face into her neck to inhale her addicting scent. But I had not seen Emry all day and that worried me. So rather than go to find my future mate and satisfy my longing, I turned around instead to find the pup. I caught his scent easily and began to track it. It led me towards the woods not to far from the pack’s farm lands and I followed it to the outskirts of the pack, where the stream was, and finally to one of th

Jasmine’s POV While the ceremony took place, I was with Nana, Lena and a few other she-wolves helping set up places for the newly shifted werewolves for when they returned from their first hunt. Since I was indoors during the ceremony, something I knew for certain was planned by Regan to keep me out of any possible harm’s way, I watched the proceedings from one of the widows of the pack house not too far away. I had gone to the stream that morning with Lena to take a cool bath after my morning session with Luke. And even though I was sore all over, it was nothing compared to the pain I had experienced when I had started. It was now a feeling I welcomed in fact. I handed over the pile of black and red robes that the newly shifted werewolves were to change into when they returned from the hunt to one of the young she-wolves working with us. Her brother was one of the newly shifted werewolves and she had been noticeably anxious about his return. “It will all be fine, Amy”

Regan’s POV We returned to the pack from the hunt. A successful hunt. While we had caught a very big deer, the other warriors had caught other smaller animals. When we returned, we went down to the stream first to wash ourselves clean of the blood and dirt gotten from the hunt. Then we made our way to the back of the pack house where a large area was set up with tables and chairs in order to have a celebratory feast under the full moon. The newly shifted werewolves were given their new robes of black and red to change into before they went back to their respective families. I watched as Emry went over to meet his mother and a calm looking girl I guessed to be his sister, judging from the color of their dark hair. Seeing how happy they seemed for him, I turned away to look for the person I was most eager to see. My eyes finally found her to see her eyes already on me, watching me with a smile. Jasmine’s POV I have always wished I could read minds. Not for any particular reason other than to know what others were thinking sometimes. I hadn’t seen Sooni since our encounter in the pack house at the coming of age ceremony and when I had asked Lena, she had simply shrugged and said. “It’s better that you do not know”. That had done nothing to ease my curiosity but I knew better than to ask again. However, the topic everyone had started to ask about and discuss was my mating ceremony to the Alpha. Shortly after the incident with Sooni, Nana had started to insist the we pick a day for our mating ceremony and so, left with very little choice on the matter, we had. Regan had insisted on me choosing the day, saying that if I wanted to become his mate the very next moment, it would still be perfect for him. So, I had talked with Lena and we had finally decided on a date for the mating ceremony to take place. After announcing the date, I had barely heard any sentenc

Regan’s POV It was the day of my mating ceremony and I had been informed that Luke had disappeared with my mate to be for a while. Of course I knew it was due to her training sessions but other than Nana and Lena, no one else had any knowledge about that. I had noticed that Jasmine and Luke had grown closer. It was clear as day to see. Luke had even gone as far as calling her by a new name he had coined from her name. I had known him all his life and had yet to get the same treatment. It caused Rage to growl in jealousy each time we heard him call her ‘Jazzie’. Partly because we had not thought to do something like that, but also because it showed just how close they had become. However, seeing the smile on Jasmine’s face each time Luke called her that was enough to make me endure the annoyance and jealousy it brought. I was anxious for some reason. One reason if I was being honest. And that reason was simple. ‘What if Jasmine changed her mind?’ That though

My entire being was simply ensnared by the beauty that was my mate. She was beautiful. More beautiful than I had ever seen her before and Rage howled with pride that she was now ours. The thought of someone else having Jasmine as their mate made me want to go on a rampage. She had on her ceremonial dress and her hair was styled perfectly. She was perfection and I could barely take my eyes off her. “You will burn a hole through her if you keep staring at her like that”, Luke said from where he was seated to my left. The truth was, I could not help it. “Be quiet”, I told him, absent minded as I continued to stare at her. “If I had known you would behave like this, I would have helped her escape”, I heard him say and whipped my head around so fast that he moved away. “What did you say?” I asked, Rage already growling in

Jasmine’s POV It was a surprise to everyone at breakfast the next morning to see Luke seated to Regan’s left, and the two thoroughly engaged in conversation. I am sure Luke’s mate was surprised as well because we shared a glance of astonishment before turning back to watch our mates interact. It was as though Luke had never left. The only difference was, when before it would be very obvious that they were both mind linking the other, it had now become that they would openly speak to each other. I secretly believed they did that so that Lena could see. If she saw and was affected by it, she hid it well, keeping a blank and almoubored expression on her face and only interacting with the ladies and her mate throughout the meal. It was the bored expression that let me know that she was indeed affected. Lena was never bored. If she was, she created something to entertain herself and others. Regan’s POV It had been three days since Luke came home and I could still feel the awkwardness between us. Lena had still not relented in her mission to pretend he did not exist and for the most part, I felt sorry for him. Lady Zara was getting along famously with the ladies, who went out of their way to include her in every activity they performed. They had even taken her to their favorite place at the stream and it was clear to see that Lady Zara was thoroughly enjoying her stay in our pack. For my part, I was mostly confused. I did not know whether to have Luke perform duties around the pack, just as I normally would. But it was not the same. I did not even know if o could still refer to him as my Beta. We had not had a single meaningful conversation since his return. On one hand, his mate was the last relative of the deceased Alpha of Redclaw pack, which meant that he could take up the leadership of the pack as its Alpha if he chose to remain there with her. O

I had known that Lena’s feelings had been hurt by Luke’s refusal to respond to the several letters she had sent him while he had been away. However, I had assumed that all would be forgiven once he returned home. I had assumed wrong. She had avoided seeing him all day and had remained in the privacy of her room until it was time for Supper. Then, she had emerged in all her cold beauty and proceeded to sit as far away from Luke at the dinner table in the pack house. Despite her avoidance of Luke and her ignoring of his existence, her cold treatment was never given to Luke’s mate, who she had pulled into a hug and gushed over how beautiful she was the moment Nana had introduced her. She also wrote to inform me that she had written to her distant nephew, the Alpha of Moonrock pack, and encouraged me to write to him, assuring me of his acceptance to hear of my request. After receiving that particular letter, I wasted no time in writing to the Alpha of Moonrock pack, convincing Alpha Gaiu to do the same on our behalf. With his arm around my waist, my mate led us back to our home after our evening meal with the rest of the pack to welcome our warriors back. Mira had done an absolutely marvelous job at cooking up the most sumptuous meal for our supper. Everyone had eaten their feel and the mood was very merry. However, throughout the meal, Isla remained quiet as usual, only lightly conversing with Lena or other wise quietly watching and smiling to some antics the warriors did. Most of them were somewhat drunk and were obnoxiously loud. One thing that was clear to anyone with eyes was how much and how often most of the warriors who had returned -most of which were unmated - tried to gain Isla’s attention. At first, they had simply stared at her or passed her admiring glances. But once they started to drink, they grew bolder with trying to g

Our goodbye was a very casual affair as we both knew each other well enough to know that we did not want to get affectionate or create a scene. So we limited our goodbye to a nod and a brief handshake and patting of shoulders.
