Jasmine’s POV.

Elena’s warmth had a way of wrapping itself around one and making them feel safe.

That was how I felt from the moment I had met her.

And that was why I confided in her about things I had never told anyone, even if we had just met.

While she tended to my wounds, we talked.

I told her a little more about my life at Blackmoon pack and she was more angry at the treatment I had been dealt before sympathizing with my plight.

Then she began to tell me about her pack.

It was called the Midnight Wolves Pack and it was a big one.

As she spoke, I could hear the pride in her voice when she talked about her pack, especially her Alpha.

It was clear that the scary Alpha, or Alpha Regan, as Elena had informed me, was highly respected and admired from the way she spoke of him.

She shared that after the attack that had killed most of their pack members, including their former Alpha and Luna several years ago, Alpha Regan had been the one to restore the pack to its full glory despite being only a child.

She told me that he had been somewhat raised alongside her and Luke -who she revealed was her cousin- by their Grandmother who was an elder and the healer of their pack.

Seeing that we had taken too much time, she helped me quickly get dressed and took me out of the cabin and to the pack house.

We went in through the back door where I saw several she-wolves busy preparing meals.

With her hand holding mine in a firm grip, she led me through the busy kitchen and out the door to what looked like an incredibly huge dining hall with several long tables and benches and beautifully illuminated by several candles and fire torches.

There, she led us past several busy she-wolves helping set up the tables and brought us to a stop before a particularly larger table, where an elderly she-wolf was giving out instructions.

“Sorry we’re late, Nana”, Lena said.

“You’re always late”, the elder replied almost immediately without looking up from her task. “Who is that with you?”she continued, still not looking in our direction.

Lena brought me a step forward.

“This is Jasmine”, she said. “My new friend”.

I felt my cheeks warm at that.

“Well bring her closer and introduce her properly then”, Nana said.

Jasmine did so immediately, leading me around the table to stand before her Nana.

Her Nana turned to face us then and I swallowed a gasp when I caught sight of her face.

Nana had an ugly scar that looked to be claw marks across the right side of her face, from her forehead down to her right ear. Since her hair was in a braid, I could see that a small part of her ear was missing.

The scar went across her right eyebrow and eye, blinding the right eye and making it a stark contrast to piercing hazel of the left eye that watched me intently.

Seeing that I had been caught staring, I hastily looked away and bowed my head in submission.

Her hazel eye reminded me instantly of Luke as they were the exact shade.

Like her grandchildren, her words to me were not what I expected.

“Do not look away, child”, I heard her say firmly and quickly brought my gaze back to her face in fear.

“When you meet someone, keep your chin up, back straight and look them right in the eyes, or eye in my case”, she said and her strict-looking face transformed to an older version of Elena as she smiled. “You can know a lot about a being from their eyes alone”, as she spoke, she looked me straight in the eye. “What does mine tell you, Jasmine?” she asked.

As I looked into her hazel eye, I don’t know why they suddenly reminded me of Elena’s warm brown ones.

So I said the exact thing that was on my mind.

“That you are Elena even though you look like Luke”, I said.

She and Elena dissolved into a laughter that showed more of their resemblance while I blushed in embarrassment.

“I-I m-meant that your eyes are the same hazel eyes as Luke but t-they remind me of E-Elena”, I tried to explain as they slowly recovered from their laughter.

“Oh you are precious!” Nana said, pulling me into a warm but brief hug. “We will have time to know each other later, but for now, we could use some more help to prepare for supper”, she added pulling away and turning to pick up a stack of plates from the table behind her and hand them to me. “Set the table with Lena while I go fetch some more plates”, she said and was gone before I could reply - another family trait.

As I still stood trying to process what had just happened, Elena took some plates from me and began to place them on the table.

“We should hurry”, she said. “Nana does not like tardiness”.

I immediately followed her lead, watching her closely and doing exactly as she did.

Some more she-wolves joined us and all the tables were set in no time.

Then with Nana’s instruction, we joined the rest of the she-wolves in bringing out the different meals. My body had begun to ache since it was not fully healed but I was determined not to show any signs of weakness.

As if knowing this, I began to notice that Elena would always hand me platters that did not carry much weight and I smiled to myself, glad that I had someone looking out for me.

After everything was ready, the grand doors to the dining were opened from the other end and werewolves began to troop in.

Elena pulled me back to the cabin -where I discovered she also stayed- and into her bigger room for us to quickly wash up before we went back to the pack house for supper.

By the time we walked into the enormous dining room, it was always filled with werewolves on different tables eating.

“We’re late again”, Elena whispered and pulled me towards the larger table where her Nana sat.

After receiving a smile from Nana who sat on the head seat on our end of the table and sitting beside Elena, I awkwardly glanced towards the other end of the table and froze.

There, seated at the head seat on the other end of the table was the Alpha of Midnight Wolves pack - or Alpha scary as I secretly called him.

The reason I was frozen wasn’t because of the sight of him, though it would cause anyone to freeze. But because his piercing eyes were fixed right at me.

I felt myself shiver and goosebumps promptly appear on my skin under his heated gaze.

There was just something about him that terrified me.

Something powerful.

Suddenly feeling a tap on my arm, I tore my gaze from his and turned to Elena who was seated on my right.

“Are you okay?” She asked, concern shining in her brown eyes.

Unable to speak, I nodded instead.

“Then why are you not eating?” She asked and I looked down at my plate to see food that I was sure she had plated for me.

I looked up at her with a smile, and rather than answer, I picked up a grape from my plate and brought it to my lips.

As always, it was delicious and I shut my eyes to savor it, only opening my eyes on hearing Elena’s laughter at my reaction.

“I knew you would like it”, she said with a dazzling smile and took a bite from her strawberry.

We talked as we ate, with her telling me funny stories about the pack and me trying not to choke on my food as I laughed.

I wasn’t worried about us making a scene because the dining hall was loud and rowdy with the werewolves interacting as they ate.

I had never seen anything like it before.

Not in my guardian’s pack and certainly not in Blackmoon pack.

When I had asked Elena about it earlier, she had said that it was something Alpha Regan had started.

He had made it a rule that the entire pack must have dinner together in order to create a closer relationship between the members of his pack. And it was clearly a huge success.

The dining hall was filled werewolves, even the screams and laughter from the pups could be heard as the sat with their parents and ate.

I had noticed Luke seated to the right of the Alpha and we locked gazes, he gave me a lazy smile and a nod that caused me to blush and look away.

The meal was delicious and I thoroughly enjoyed my first supper at the Midnight Wolves pack.

As it came to an end and Elena pulled me out of the hall to escape cleaning chores, I could still feel the heat from his gaze just as I had felt and tried to ignore it throughout supper.

Regan’s POV

I watched as she snuck out of the door with Lena, only slightly surprised that the two were acting like old friends.

I knew Lena was kind and friendly, that was why I had told Luke to get her to show Carson’s mate around.

The thought of her mate made my blood boil.

The bastard!

He was even cruel enough to try to kill his mate. The fool!

I remembered how frightened and bruised she had been when I had first met her. For some reason, I felt relieved that she looked better than last time.

Though her bruises were still visible, they were obviously healing- no doubt thanks to Nana’s salve. Her blonde hair was now in a neat braid, falling down her back and to her waist. She was still very thin but the green dress she wore, though a little big for her, was a lot better than the ripped cloak she had on before.

The fact that I remembered such things about her brought a sudden frown to my face.

One my Beta wasted no time in pointing out.

“What has caused that frown this time?” He asked, sprawled on his chair.

“Nothing”, I answered gruffly.

I knew he wouldn’t let it go and he didn’t disappoint.

“Is it troubling you that Lena is growing close with Jasmine?” He asked and at first I didn’t know who he was referring to.

“Jasmine?” I asked, turning to face him with a puzzled look.

“Yes”, he said, popping a nut into his mouth. “The Blackmoon girl. That’s her name”, he informed.

“Jasmine”, I subconsciously said, trying the name out.

“Yes, Jasmine”, Luke affirmed, something akin to humor now dancing in his hazel eyes. “Does she bother you?” He asked.

I shot him a glare.

“Why would she?”, I asked. “She’s a wolf-less girl that poses no threat”, I told him, drinking from my wine goblet. “I could break her in half with just a flick of my wrist”, I reminded him nonchalantly and saw him give a nod before turning away without another word.

For some unknown reason I wasn’t ready to explore, I felt relieved that he let it go.

Jasmine’s POV Life at the Midnight Wolves pack was nothing short of a dream for me. For the first time, I was treated like everyone else. For the first time, I had a friend and people who looked happy with my presence. I was happy. I had begun helping out at the healing house with Lena, Nana and two other werewolves. Elena had insisted that I called her Lena like her friends and family did. I had assisted in tending to minor wounds and watched closely to learn all that I could. After all, I didn’t know when the scary Alpha would decide that I was no longer useful. After I had once helped stitch the injured arm of a werewolf, Nana had declared that I had a talent for stitching and so, I had started helping out with stitching the wounds of the patients that visited the healing house. While working there, I noticed that there was something a little strange about Nana. I had noticed her chanting what I believed to be spells from time to time whil

As my study door banged loudly after them, I voiced out the thought that was running through my mind. “What, in the name of the Moon Goddess just happened?” I asked aloud to no one in particular but still turned my confused gaze to meet Luke’s equally confused gaze. His frown of confusion he was spotting was gradually clearing as something close to understanding began to take its place. I turned back to look at the spot where she had once laid in pain and thought hard even as I slowly began to comprehend the situation. Jasmine’s POV I woke up to the feeling of the Sun in my face. Knowing not to open my eyes immediately, I gradually blinked them open and turned my head away from the glare of the Sun rays shining through my open window. I looked around at the familiar sight of my room, wondering how I had gotten there for a moment before the memories of the previous day began to flood through my head. I remembered everything. Up until I had lost consciousness in scary Alpha’s study. I remembered even the dream I had about him. I had dreamt that he had been in my room and had somehow apologized about hurting me. I remembered how guilty he had looked in my dream and how he couldn’t look right at me. That was what made me sure that it was a dream. His entire being radiated power and confidence. There was no way he had felt guilt and had come to make sure I was okay. That reminded me of something else. Compared to the pain I had been in yesterday, I surprisingly felt good. I looke

Regan’s POV After what had happened in the training ground, I made sure to double my efforts in avoiding her, as well as Nana and Lena. It should not have been a big deal. And it wouldn’t have been if my major reason for avoiding her was simply because I felt guilty for hurting her, even though it was not intended. However, I had gotten a more profound reason to avoid her. And that reason was because of the fact that I had felt her gaze on me. It would not have been a problem if I had felt it in the way one could just feel someone watching or staring at you. That was not the case this time. The case - and herein laid the problem- was that I could feel the movement of her gaze in particular as it trailed over my body almost as if she was physically touching me. And she had not been the only one watching me. What had bothered me more was Rage’s reaction to the sensation she caused. He immediately became distracted and restless, trying to take a little control and get m

Jasmine’s POV In all my life, I had never seen such a sight. Lena’s words suddenly came to mind as I stood frozen in fear at the creature before me. Creature was the best word to describe him. A terrifying creature from nightmares. Lena had not been exaggerating when she had described him as terrifying. Rage, I remembered her saying, was his name. I had no idea how I knew it was him. Yet there was something inside of me that was left without a doubt that the terrifying creature that stood before me was the scary Alpha’s wolf. He was bigger than any wolf I had seen or even imagined. His fur was black as night with not one spot of color, and from the look of him alone you could just tell how dangerous he was. But what made the blood freeze in my veins, more than his form, were his eyes. His blood red eyes. Those eyes watched me, as if being able to see into my soul and predict my next move. It dared me to run in fear knowing that it would make no difference.

Regan’s POV If I had been avoiding Jasmine before, now I was completely ignoring her existence. And with good reason. Ever since our encounter in the woods with Rage, I was determined to not be anywhere close to her. Not that I was complaining, but the fragile she-wolf had turned my killer wolf with a deadly reputation and terrible temperament into a purring pup. I had never seen Rage act that way before. He had always been wary of interacting and always kept to himself, only coming out when I wanted him to. Whenever he did come out, he left destruction in his wake. I had felt a little guilty about how I had spoken to her in her room the last time. But I needed her to understand the kind of danger she could have been in. Not that I thought Rage would hurt her now after he had acted like a needy pup. But what scared me more than anything was that during that time in the forest, I had had absolutely no control over Rage. He had never taken complete control before

Regan’s POV Luke had been right about two things. The first being that telling Nana the truth was the best way to win her over, and that gifts would make my apology more appealing. However, he had been wrong about Lena. She had not been impressed about me trying to win her forgiveness by getting her dresses and pearls. Perhaps Luke didn’t know his cousin as well as he thought. Or perhaps I had hurt her more than we had both thought. Unlike Nana who had wrapped me in a hug after I had made my apology, promised not to do it again and presented my gifts, Lena had simply shot me a glare cold enough to turn me to ice before walking away from me. I had promptly gone back to my advisor to report about my half-successful plan. After expressing his exaggerated surprise at being wrong, he had simply sprawled on the bed in his room -where I had come to seek him- and said. “Simply do exactly what you did to Nana”, he said. “They are disturbingly similar, after all”, he h

Chapter 15Jasmine’s POV I stared at the scary Alpha in surprise, not quite believing I had heard him right. He had resumed coming for supper at the pack’s dining hall and from the attention he had gotten on arrival, it was clear to see that his pack had missed him. It seemed that his misunderstanding with Nana had somehow been resolved since she had seated herself to his right, rather than at her usual place on the other end of the table, in the other head seat. Instead, while she took his usual place, Luke occupied her seat at the other head chair and engaged both me and Lena in conversation throughout the meal. While I was not seated right beside him, I was seated beside Lena who was to his right. I had been slightly surprised when he had turned his entire focus to both me and his cousin, hardly relating at all with the werewolves seated to his left. He had regaled us with tales from his journeys to different places, including his visits to the werewolves in the West.

I am sure Luke’s mate was surprised as well because we shared a glance of astonishment before turning back to watch our mates interact. It was as though Luke had never left. The only difference was, when before it would be very obvious that they were both mind linking the other, it had now become that they would openly speak to each other. I secretly believed they did that so that Lena could see. If she saw and was affected by it, she hid it well, keeping a blank and almoubored expression on her face and only interacting with the ladies and her mate throughout the meal. It was the bored expression that let me know that she was indeed affected. Lena was never bored. If she was, she created something to entertain herself and others. Lady Zara was getting along famously with the ladies, who went out of their way to include her in every activity they performed. They had even taken her to their favorite place at the stream and it was clear to see that Lady Zara was thoroughly enjoying her stay in our pack. For my part, I was mostly confused. I did not know whether to have Luke perform duties around the pack, just as I normally would. But it was not the same. I did not even know if o could still refer to him as my Beta. We had not had a single meaningful conversation since his return. On one hand, his mate was the last relative of the deceased Alpha of Redclaw pack, which meant that he could take up the leadership of the pack as its Alpha if he chose to remain there with her. O

I had known that Lena’s feelings had been hurt by Luke’s refusal to respond to the several letters she had sent him while he had been away. However, I had assumed that all would be forgiven once he returned home. I had assumed wrong. She had avoided seeing him all day and had remained in the privacy of her room until it was time for Supper. Then, she had emerged in all her cold beauty and proceeded to sit as far away from Luke at the dinner table in the pack house. She also wrote to inform me that she had written to her distant nephew, the Alpha of Moonrock pack, and encouraged me to write to him, assuring me of his acceptance to hear of my request. After receiving that particular letter, I wasted no time in writing to the Alpha of Moonrock pack, convincing Alpha Gaiu to do the same on our behalf. He readily agreed, if for nothing else but for his mate sake, I suspected. Mira had done an absolutely marvelous job at cooking up the most sumptuous meal for our supper. Everyone had eaten their feel and the mood was very merry. However, throughout the meal, Isla remained quiet as usual, only lightly conversing with Lena or other wise quietly watching and smiling to some antics the warriors did. Most of them were somewhat drunk and were obnoxiously loud. One thing that was clear to anyone with eyes was how much and how often most of the warriors who had returned -most of which were unmated - tried to gain Isla’s attention. At first, they had simply stared at her or passed her admiring glances. But once they started to drink, they grew bolder with trying to g
