Chapter 2:

Leilani’s POV

The first thing I heard was the beeping of a sound. It continued repeatedly in a horizontal pattern that I was forced to peel my eyes open to snap the machine shut.

Blinking, I was initially blinded by the brightness of the light. Was I in heaven? I thought. Was this what heaven looked like? That means the scriptures were correct.

The beeping sound continued causing me to snap my neck to my side, I regretted the action almost immediately as pain shot throughout my body.

As my eyes slowly adjusted to the room, the first thing I spotted was the white roof, the drips connected in my veins, the oxygen mask and a monitor beside me beeping.

Where was I? I strained my eyes. Here definitely didn't look like the heaven I had heard of.

The sound of the door creaking open made me widen my eyes as my neck could not move.

A man I suspected to be the doctor walked in, “hello there,” he smiled, coming up to where I lay immobile on the small bed. I wanted to move  but it was as though I were paralyzed.

I wanted to speak, however I had an oxygen mask over my face. So I stared and watched as he meandered around.

“I know, you have a lot of questions and no you are not dead. You are very much alive,” the doctor said to me. He took out the oxygen mask and wiped my mouth clean, then used a mini torch and flashed into my eyes.

“You are one lucky lady,” he muttered, but I couldn't help but think it was a stark contrast to who I was. I couldn't be considered lucky, not after what Cormac did to me.

“Wh..at.. Happened,” I asked amidst coughing. As I coughed, pain radiates through my lungs, making it so hard and severe to breathe, it was as though my lungs and throat were on fire.

“You had a lot of water in your lungs, you would experience a slight discomfort as you speak for the moment,” the doctor explained.

“What happened? Who saved me?” I asked almost in a whisper.

“I did.” The door to my ward slid open and a young man sauntered in. He should be around his early thirties or perhaps late twenties.

Light hazel eyes like mine shimmered as they held me in esteem.  He was handsome, but after the hell I’d just swam through, admiring another man would be bizarre.

“Why?” I asked, breaking the silence and his intense gaze.

“Hmm?” He hummed in confusion. I wanted to seat up but the pain that seared through my body at mere attempt had me slammed back into the bed. “Why did you save me?”

“I’ll be right back, let me get your scan results.” The doctor said and left with the nurses.

My eyes revered to the stranger that had saved me. I should be grateful but I didn’t think the world offered me any sort of thanks to be appreciative.

“How did you save me?” I asked. He looked fit and resembled an athlete. He looked like one that had always spent his Saturday jogging. A direct contrast to how my Saturday went. Saving me would merely cost a muscle from him.

“That's for later, maybe if we ever become close. Now dear tell me what happened?” he drew his chair close to mine.

“I heard you saying, ‘at least my death was quick,’” he said. I would have hissed if not for the pain shooting through my body.

“My husband…. No my husband to be, he..,” my words were stumbled over by a preceding tears. I blinked and swallowed down on it.

He urged me by taking my hand. My birthmark suddenly ignited his curiosity and he peered down. He refrained from asking any question and let me continue with the story of my shitty life.

When I was sure I could talk without tearing down, I resumed. “He married my best friend. I was on my way to the altar, happy with a veiled face only when I reached there, I saw him with my childhood best friend standing on the altar, saying the vows to one another.” I choked on a sob and widened my eyes till they were steered by every traitorous tear.

“I was thrown out and humiliated in front of the public. I just wanted to die and end this misery, fortunately for me, the truck did the job without me trying. I was happy that I won't get to see them yet….” My tone was hard now as I spoke.

“Here you are, alive,” the man completed.

“But I don't want to live this life, I'm tired. I have lost, I have nothing to return to, I have no home, nowhere, that death was a free ticket out of this hell hole,” I sniffed.

“Life is a funny thing my dear, those we hold in high esteem, will always let us down the most, the fact that we met on that bridge wasn't a coincidence. I never wanted to take my boat out today, but something urged me. I would like to believe it was fate bringing us together. You have been given a second chance so you must make use of this chance wisely,” the man muttered with a new found determination that I couldn't trace where or how it came from.

“What do you mean?” I frowned in confusion.

“Some may say you should forget about it. But most of the time we need closure to forgive those who have wronged us.”

As if his words were not confusing enough he said the next crazy thing. “I can help you have revenge on them.”

I laughed, “how do you mean? That is not even possible, did I forget to tell you? I have nothing,” I emphasised, reminding him.

“Well you just have everything if you conform to what I'm about to offer,” the man said again like that made some kind of sense.

“What's that?” I asked in scepticism, my brows furrowed slightly at his words.

“Come with me to where I stay, you’ll be given an offer and if you take it you can have everything you have lost, double.”

Silent passed after his declaration before I started laughing. “What. I’m I in some sort of a book?” I laughed so hard  that my chest and lungs hurt.

He stared quietly at me. His expression deadpan serious.

“You’ve got to be kidding. I was rejected by a man and now you want me to follow you blindly into gods know where and then you’ll now suggest we get married.”

His eyes widened, and I chuckled. “I know how this works. But I’m not interested in your offer.”

Just as he opened his mouth to answer, the door swung open and the doctor meandered in. He had with him an ultrasound result.

Nurses came to my side and helped me up gently. Tucking the duvet around me. The doctor took out the drips connected to my veins and I was sedated with something else.

“Here.” The doctor handed me what I supposed was X-ray results of probably my organs, like my lungs and how stuffed they were because of the water. What I didn’t expect however was an ultrasound pregnancy results.

“I think I have the wrong result, doctor.” I called his attention and handed him the results.

His brows creased and he took a look at it. “No,” he passed it back. “It’s correct.”

“What?” I swore I could have heard him wrong. “This result is mine?”

“Well yes.” He answered unflatteringly.

Every burning in my lung cooled off as I sat even more still. Before I could voice the questions in words he answered.

“You are pregnant, miss Leilani.”

Again, “what?!” The fire like lava reignited in me. Hotter than anything I’ve ever felt before.

“You are four weeks pregnant.”

The room suddenly fell silent. So silent that I could hear the tweaking sound in my ear grow louder. I was pregnant. I was pregnant, for Cormac. How could such a thing happen?

“Doctor,” I grabbed his hand. “Can anything be done? Anything to help the situation I’m in?”

He got my message and took my hand. Slowly, he shook his head sullenly. “I’m sorry miss. But nothing can be done at this stage.”

I dropped back into the bed. Let me recall the event that had taken place today. I arrived late for my own wedding, discovered that Cormac was getting married to my best friend who snatched my husband to be, I got thrown out from the church, had a near death accident and now I was pregnant for the man that left me on the altar?!

How did my life take such a dark route?

In my hysteria I locked eyes with the angel I didn’t ask for. The man that saved me and I remembered his offer. Taking his offer meant suffering more in this life when I could just simply end things tonight. Rid myself of this life.

The doctor left to get something. My head was still spinning with the information I just received. All I could think about was the fact that there was a child in me after everything, a child that belonged to Cormac. I should have died, I really should have died in that water.

The young man walked up to me, his presence snapping me out of my reverie. I found myself glaring at him as a streak of tears tumbled down my cheeks. He gently brushed it away and took my hands.

“Will you take me up on my offer?”
