Cole's mouth fell agape in sheer astonishment. This definitely has to be a doppelganger of Claire.
Otherwise his best friend's wife was timid and mute. She barely opened her mouth to speak. And even if she was slandered, she found it was better to meet them with silence than to retort.
"What? Is something on my face?" Claire asked with a grin.
Cole nodded his head as he confessed, "You have become fierce. I like this side of you."
"Thanks. I had to become outspoken for the sake of my marriage. I have to save Hunter and my relation, Cole. And I will need your help with it."
"I am always here for you two, Claire. Just let me know how I can help." He liked her spirit.
"Okay, listen to me," She held his gaze. "I want to gather information on Zara. Cole, I feel that her return is deliberate and that her husband's death is not natural."
Cole's back stiffened. His eyebrows knitted together as he suppressed himself from looking disappointed.
"I get your point about saving your marriage, Claire. But I think you're judging Zara wrong. I hung out with her when she was dating Hunter. She's a pure soul. Zara can't even hurt a fly let alone break your marriage."
"I want to believe that too. That's why I need your help. I want you to help me get her information, Cole."
"I don't think I can help here, Claire." Cole shook his head apologetically. "I know Zara and I know you as well. You both are struggling in your lives and the cause of your hardship is one and the same man. You must talk to Hunter and sort things out. I don't want to become a part of this where Zara is concerned."
"Are you saying this because of your friendship with Hunter?"
"That too, and also because I know Zara. She's innocent, Claire. I don't think she could kill her husband to be with Hunter. Your fears are justified but it's a ridiculous guess." He got up with a cringe face, not happy with Claire's perspective.
"If she wanted to be with him then she could have him two years ago by refusing her marriage with her fiance. Hunter would have crossed seven seas to make her his. But she didn't and quietly proceeded with her marriage. Try to see logic here. Zara is not behind your miseries. Your own husband is."
Claire stared at her hands in her lap. Maybe Cole was stating the facts.
However, he was not married to someone. He didn't know the pain of losing his significant other half.
He didn't have to fear an old lover who made a stunning return on his marriage anniversary. It wasn't his marriage dangling on the precipice.
On the contrary, Claire was tolerating more than she could. Her sixth sense told her Zara had more layers to her face. Even if she didn't, she would soon know.
"Thanks for coming to meet me, Cole. I will always remember this. But I will do what I have to do." She rose while bearing his gaze.
"Then good luck with it. However, if Hunter gets pissed off and does something crazy to you. I hope you won't blame him or anyone else. I already warned you." His brows creased. "Zara is very humble and down to earth. You will find nothing negative about her because she has none."
With that he departed with a frown that made Claire realize she lost a friend.
Although she took note of Cole's words regarding Zara seriously, she reached out to a friend from her school, Monty. He was a professional detective and mastered the art of gathering information even if it was buried five layers inside earth.
"Hi Claire, I saw the news on the internet. I'm sorry you have to go through that." Monty said.
"It's nothing. Don't worry about that. I will handle it."
"I always liked your spirit, Claire. You are a strong woman and you will go very far in life with your perseverant behavior." Monty was always team Claire.
Without wasting time, Claire told her doubts, "I just want to save my marriage, Monty. I will go to any limit to hold onto my husband. Which is why I need your help."
After a long sigh Monty replied, "I'm in, buddy. I always wanted to work with you. But due to our poles apart profession I dropped the desire. It will feel good to be working for you."
Claire thanked him. After hanging up, she decided to visit her parents to take them in confidence.
Her father was reading some documents in the living room while her mother was in the kitchen when she arrived. Scott took their father's car to college since she took his in the early morning.
"Claire," Dominic's body stiffened when he noticed her.
He left his papers on the table to get up and engulf her in a hug. Since he almost yelled her name, her mother also came running to them.
"Oh baby, it's good to see you back home." Andrea said emotionally.
They settled on the couch with Claire in the middle while her parents sat on her side. The way they glanced at her made her nervous.
The Argents were the second most wealthiest family in Bloomcrest while the MacIntyres were the first.
But what made them outstand the MacIntyres in terms of possession was love. The Argents loved each other and cared deeply. Their family was one full of culture and happiness. All the uncles and aunts, and cousins lived joyfully like they were cut from the same piece of cloth.
On the contrary, the MacIntyres were scattered. They hardly met each other. If family dinners were to be conducted, they have to go through their secretaries respectively to reach out to each other and make an appointment for the same.
That's why, when Claire expressed her feelings for the cold and emotionless middle grandson of Mr. Thomson MacIntyre after his proposal came, Dominic told her to think twice. Their family didn't know the meaning of unity. They were like the coins in a chess board which moved according to rules and conditions.
"I'm sorry for scaring you yesterday." Claire rested her head on her father's shoulder.
In response her father kissed her hands while her mother hugged her. It wasn't her fault that her husband came out as a jerk.
She told them about wanting to stay in the marriage with Hunter. Her parents stared at each other as they could see she was refusing to believe it. Even though it was in front of her eyes.
Her husband was gone.
They stayed quiet and listened to her. They brought her up with values that she must not give up in life. She was taught to be a Victor no matter what. Alas, she was trying it in the wrong place. They didn't correct her.
When it was time for her to depart Dominic caressed her head and said, "This house is yours, darling. Don't ever hesitate to come back."
"Why would I come back? I have my own house with my husband." She said with a chuckle, making her parents' face twist with a forced smile.
'You can't refuse it for long, Claire. You know it's over. I hope you understand that soon.' Her parents thoughts to themselves.
She then took her leave. Nevertheless, just as she stepped out of their mansion, she discovered a bunch of journalists with mic and camera men gathering around the gate of Argent mansion. The three security guards tried to keep them at bay.
'Zara Levine, you think you're smart enough! Let me show you the mirror.' She mused while strutting towards the crowd with her head held high.
Tbc...
7The cameras flashed just as Claire crossed the gate and came to this side to meet the waiting crowd of journalists. "Mrs. MacIntyre or Miss Argent? Which one do you prefer?" Irritated by the question, Claire forced her lips to curve. Her grin carried a hint of mockery as she faced the cameras before holding the gaze of the journalist who asked her the question."What should I call you- a journalist or a woman with impaired eyesight? Or rather... a brainless journalist with impaired eyesight? Which one do you prefer?"Her Savage reply made the woman chuckle sheepishly in embarrassment. The others stared at Claire with an impressed glance as she never spoke like this before. It seemed that the kitten had transformed her claws finally."Do you see this sparkling big diamond? This shows that I am married. Hence I will prefer Mrs. MacIntyre now and for the rest of my life." Someone from the mass of journalists clapped in amusement. The lady mouthed a small apology while another person
8Dusk hung over Bloomcrest while the winds rolled over calmly. In her Villa, Claire worked tirelessly in the kitchen. She was preparing food for Hunter. There was a cheerful smile on her face as though she was very happy in her marriage.Thea was helping in the kitchen. She took the dishes to the dining table as they were filled with a new dish by Claire. As she returned after her fourth round, she nervously pinched her fingers and spoke in a hushed tone. "Madam, I don't think Mr. MacIntyre will return home today. S-so I'm afraid all this food you're making is going to go wasted." "I left a message to Hunter in the evening to come home soon for dinner. He might have seen it and will be here anytime now." Claire said confidently. Beside her Thea made a pitiful face as she thought, 'You're dreaming with open eyes, madam. Your husband is gone. He's not yours any more. Why can't you see it?' "Can you pass me the ketchup please?" Claire asked. Thea remained quiet and helped the lady
9Hunter stared at her last message with cold eyes. 'Playing stubborn? I like it.' He mumbled while putting a hand under his head. He was in the penthouse on the sofa in the living room, staring at the door of the room Zara was in. Although he insisted on sleeping in bed with her and cuddling her, she refused him without blinking an eye. Zara claimed that she was a widow and Hunter was a married man. A married man with a loving and dedicated wife. It would not be appropriate to sleep with him while his wife was waiting for him in their house. Though the flames of need to be held tight were evident in her eyes, she suggested maintaining space. This was one of the qualities in Zara that Hunter was crazy about. She sacrificed her life and love for others. She prioritized others' feelings over hers. She didn't give herself the attention and praise she deserved. All her life, she thought about others. Then why shouldn't Hunter thrive to give her a deserving happy life? She deserved to
10Hunter didn't have to ask about his wife at the reception. A doctor who noticed him entering inside, who was talking to a nurse, left his conversation incomplete to escort the heir of MacIntyre empire to his wife's ward.Obviously Claire had to be taken to the VIP floor and kept in the biggest ward. As Hunter walked nearer to her, his body started growing sweaty and heart thundered in his chest. This feeling was equivalent to feeling the soul leaving one's body. What amazed him more was the fact that he was feeling this way for his wife who he was desperately trying to dispose of to be with his real lover.'What the hell!' A lump formed in his throat as he heard himself swearing in shock. In front of him were Thea and Cole sitting on a bench. While the old woman was rubbing and squeezing her hands in nervousness, his best friend sat emotionlessly staring at his shoes. However, they had one thing in common. Blood. Both of their clothes were stained with blood as though they were pla
11Pain engulfed Claire. Her body became numb as she expressionlessly stared at nowhere in the air.She didn't know what day it was or how long she had been asleep in a hospital bed, but she knew that not eating proper food for ten days caused huge damage to her body. She could feel her bones trembling. Her body felt paper light while her lashes weighed down with exhaustion. All of this she did was for what? Her husband didn't even care to spare her a glance when he saw her.It was after ten days they met. But still, he left hurriedly as if she was not in a hospital bed with a bandage on the head. The screeching sound of parting door made her lift her eyes. Claire noticed Cole standing on the doorstep with a frown."What's up with your husband? He left like a hurricane." He came inside."Something to do with Zara." Claire spoke in a voice lacking emotions. It still oozed with pain.Cole's back stiffened. He gritted his teeth as he shook his head."Zara!" He huffed while turning arou
12"You're being insane, Claire! Like why? Why would you persevere to stay beside a man who doesn't give two fucks about your health?" Penelope ground the words out as a tear escaped her right eye.Although she was aware of the full story of her friend, she didn't expect to get the gore information Claire just shared.Hunter left her unattended for ten days. Even if he came to see her today, it was only for a few minutes. He has to he a total jerk to do that to his devoting wife."It's certain that man doesn't feel shit for you. Why would you still chase after him then?" Penelope literally screamed as she asked the question.Claire raised her now dry eyes. She was exhausted of crying. But her wet lashes made her look vulnerable."Hunter is distracted, Penny. Otherwise he was a very good husband to me in the last two months after I asked him to give me another ch—""Who the fuck is he to give you a chance, huh? That asshole should not even get an appointment to see you again. You're be
13If Claire thought that was more hurtful, she was wrong. Just after Hunter left she saw her mother-in-law turning to her husband with a teary face and said, "Poor soul has to go through so much. Leon, she will be fine, won't she?" And she hugged her husband.Claire felt like a bucket of cold icy water was thrown on her. She had been here since last night and nobody came to see her except for her husband... Which was also for only ten seconds to count. Her parents were oblivious of her condition. But considering that Cole brought her here in his arms, shouldn't he have told her in-laws too? Beside her husband. Torment seeped into her bones and suddenly her skull began to throb with pain.Cole was standing beside her in-laws, soothing them. Claire couldn't bring herself to believe how suddenly everyone's emotions turned against her. Up until some days ago, all these people were on her side, shedding tears for her and pitying her.She could have endured Hunter's indifference becaus
14While the lines of worry lessened around Cole's mouth as the ladies seemed to notice his words, Claire scanned his face for visible lies.He could be lying to fool her. Unfortunately, all she saw was genuinity. Moreover, he had no reason to lie. He may be Hunter's best friend, he was supporting Claire."Nice excuse but my friend and I are not imbeciles. That woman and rape... What a joke!" Penelope said, her words reduced the impact Cole's announcement had created. She refused to believe that it happened. She cringed and added, "I'm forced to wonder whether you are involved with Zara to destroy Claire's relationship. Cole, tell me honestly, are you doing this because you are jealous of your best friend having a loving and faithful wife? You want to separate them because you never had a chance at true love. Ain't I right?""If you can't say anything good, don't open your stinking mouth, Penelope Baker." Cole hissed out. His eyes grew darker, and if looks could kill, he would have
200"This is all, but I swear, I haven't seen any other woman since that encounter with that wench. It was after that incident I started noticing you. The second year of our marriage consists of me observing everything you did. That's how I learned your favorites, although I never let it show until now."Hunter tried to close the gap between them with small steps, hoping that when he was standing before her, Claire wouldn't push him away. After all, he had a huge list of extra marital relations. "When I started learning things about you, it slowly came to my understanding that you were exactly how I would have preferred my life partner to be. You were firm with a touch of boldness. You could be extremely caring at times and extensively outraged if annoyed. You didn't hesitate to make me pay for my ignorance and then you also came to show your love to me when you felt that I wasn't going to do it. You held the torch in our relationship and lives, and radiated it with your resilience."
199"I was mentally dead. Although I married you, I didn't feel the excitement as that of a married man because you weren't the woman I want. So, I just spent my time at the club with Cole and other friends.""Even if you weren't the bride I saw myself saying 'I do' for, I was determined to never stray. But that night, that night something got into. I was not heavily drunk but I kissed a woman who sat in my life. I groped her even though Cole and my friends warned me of having a wife. I didn't know what I was doing."Claire's stare became painful. She internally lamented as her heart yelled from the pain of his treachery. His confession now hurt like a third degree burn. She didn't know when she started sobbing, but that was the only sound she heard. She felt as though she’d suddenly jumped off a cliff. What she was feeling was beyond anyone's imagination. Accepting Hunter's infidelity before marriage was bearable. But thinking of him doing the same in the first week after he was dec
198"It happened a few days after Zara left me. I was heartbroken and mentally disturbed. The blaring music of the club became my companion as I found solace in alcohol. I would spend the days at office and my nights at the club." Hunter began. Now that she asked him to be honest, he was not going to skip anything. She also warned him to share it even it's hurtful, so he would do that too. As long as it convinced her to stay and be with him, he would do anything. Although that's not what he thought he would be compelled to do when he left his house to find Claire, he had no other choice. Hunter's heart raced in his chest. He was making mistake after mistake recently. One action he took to soothe his nerves ended up causing a ripple effect of consequences. Hence, he wasn't going to make another mistake by skipping any detail of his infidelity. The air was cool, and yet he sweated profusely while his face remained as white as the moon. "But I was never alone. Cole was there with me.
197A thunder clapped in the sky with lightning, illuminating their faces for a nanosecond. Hunter was panicked by her words and the expression he caught in the light from her face made his blood rush to his head. He moved closer. He pulled her to his chest and leaned his face near hers. Claire squirmed and wriggled like a fish taken out of water. But she calmed down the minute he pinned her to the tree and rested his forehead against hers, his mouth aligned with hers while his thrumming heart synced with her own. The air seemed to turn colder as darkness increased. They couldn't see each other. But in the back of their minds, they pictured each other's expressions and emotions as they breathed heavily in sync. "You are a jerk... And I hate you." Claire sobbed. Her body was shaking in misery. She was crying because of his disappearance and caressed her back. He moved his mouth to her jaw and trailed a line of kisses along her jaw to her neck as he whispered sorry to hers. Claire
196Claire dashed a hand over her cheeks to wipe her tears. She didn't know where else to go— where she could cry without being interuptted by her loved ones or well-wishers— so she came to the only place she thought would offer her the privacy and quiet she needed during this phase of her life... The lake. The same lake that was her companion during her teenage years. The same lake around which she touched herself for the first time while imagining Hunter. The same lake that soothed her heart and brought delight to her face whenever she came here in the past. However, she felt cold in her heart tonight when she came here. Her eyes stung from tears that build up. Stopping near a tree, Claire slumped down. She was tired of feeling disappointed at how her life was unfolding.Twists and turns aggravated her. It was like every month her life took a turn. While one month she was all gloomy and struggling to focus in life, the other month she was too exhilarated to contain it. The changing
195There was silence on the line from both sides. They contemplated where their siblings would go at this hour of night. A thunder roared outside and they both returned back to their senses. "It's completely okay for Tyler to stay out at this hour of night. It's not the first time. But Claire..." Shawn trailed off. "This isn't like Claire. Something's wrong." "We have to find them. Now. I'm coming to your place, Scott. I'll pick you up and we'll go together." Shawn announced."Let's go find them. I need to know what's going on. Claire would never disappear without a word." ***At Hunter's Mansion, Cole sat on the patio, his weary figure slumped in a chair. He was smoking while scrolling through his face. His face was grim while his lips twisted at the posts he came across on his feed. Tyler and Claire were trending. Some stupid social media manipulator started a rumor and it was going awfully viral now. Although Cole understood that it was fake, it sparked widespread frenzy. Us
194Shawn brought his mother to a restaurant located in a remote area with quiet surroundings. It took them about an hour, except that Tia wasn't fazed one bit. The sound of crickets served as background music. Tia was impressed by the warm atmosphere. She walked with her hand around Shawn's arm not like his mother, but like a friend. She was thrilled to see eyes following her and Shawn. Some women stopped all motion to take a glance. When Shawn pulled a chair for her, she heard a woman from the neighboring table praising her hairstyle. They ordered a five course meal. Before it arrived, Shawn excused himself to go to the restroom. He paid the waiter who took their order to praise his mother's beauty. When he came back to their table, the waiter followed suit. He brought a bottle of wine with two flutes and smiled politely at Tia.He gazed at Shawn and Tia with a bow and repeated the words he was directed to deliver, "Sir, madam, you are our fiftieth couple of the night. We have thi
193. At Murphy mansion,Tia glanced at the clock on the wall with a frown. Then her gaze shifted to the door as she impatiently turned the pages of the magazine in her lap. She seemed annoyed by something but was surprisingly quiet, not taking it out on anyone like she was accustomed to.Shawn, who was sitting next to her, was perturbed by her behavior. It wasn't in his mother's nature to stay quiet while she was annoyed. She would rather split the house apart with her loud screams and scoldings."Someone is constantly checking the clock and staring at the door. Is someone precious expected?" He gave a girly gasp to irritate Tia and added, "Maybe a lover who is supposed to visit behind dad's back!""Damn, dad will be so exasperated. Grandma will be more furious than him, knowing that her daughter-in-law is cheating on her son." He seemed to think deeply while stroking his jaw. "What would she do if I told her? Kill mom? Nah, that'd be the easiest way of punishing her." He talked to h
192Tyler came down to the parking lot with a twisted face. Claire's words were echoing in his mind. Every allegation seared through him. He gritted his teeth amidst a scoff and frustratedly slapped a pillar next to him."What does she take me for? The nerve of her, accusing me like that." He growled to himself. "I shouldn’t have shown her any kindness. Because I’m her ex’s rival, she misinterpreted my intentions and used the moment to humiliate me.""I feel like a fool. No one has ever humiliated me the way she did. I just..." He sighed as his anger dissipated.Tyler slumped against the pillar and closed his eyes, "I really can't blame her... Since it's all my fault. Why did I have to fall for my rival's ex-wife?"He reached out in his pocket for a pack of cigarette. He lit one and brought it to his mouth. Taking a long drag, he stared in the darkness, thinking about the encounter he had with Claire.Tyler was not hurt... But his heart ached. He had been waiting all day to see her. Ju
