Hunter didn't have to ask about his wife at the reception. A doctor who noticed him entering inside, who was talking to a nurse, left his conversation incomplete to escort the heir of MacIntyre empire to his wife's ward.

Obviously Claire had to be taken to the VIP floor and kept in the biggest ward. As Hunter walked nearer to her, his body started growing sweaty and heart thundered in his chest.

This feeling was equivalent to feeling the soul leaving one's body. What amazed him more was the fact that he was feeling this way for his wife who he was desperately trying to dispose of to be with his real lover.

'What the hell!' A lump formed in his throat as he heard himself swearing in shock.

In front of him were Thea and Cole sitting on a bench. While the old woman was rubbing and squeezing her hands in nervousness, his best friend sat emotionlessly staring at his shoes. However, they had one thing in common. Blood.

Both of their clothes were stained with blood as though they were playing with red paint.

Hunter's loud steps informed his arrival. Cole's face quickly hardened into a mask of fury while Thea burst into another round of heavy tears that made her face become red.

"Sir," Thea got up in respect, but the tremors in her voice froze Hunter.

He looked towards the closed door of the ward, trying to contemplate the severity of Claire's pain. There was no doubt that she hurt herself. But the point was... How?

As if Cole was a mind reader, he perceived the uncertainties playing in his friend's eyes and scoffed, "Thea, your boss would want a gist of what happened. Even though he ignored your calls and later on switched his phone off. But like the best Housekeeper you are, you must report everything to him."

Hunter kept quiet. He watched Cole shower him a contemptuous look. He would have loved to make him feel remorseful had he not received a call.

While Cole excused himself and left Hunter with Thea alone, the old lady covered her mouth to sob.

In the meanwhile Hunter stood watching her face with expectation to hear what happened.

"M-madam swooned on top of the stairs and came rolling down, sir. Her head hurt and she wasn't breathing well when we brought her here." Hunter's shoulders slumped.

He stared at the door of the ward as his eyes hesitantly blinked. He recalled Cole mentioning that Claire starved herself.

"Where the hell have you been when she was starving herself, Thea? Your duty is to take care of the house and keep her company. Why didn't you tell me anything about it when she was skipping meals?"

"I... I tried, sir. But Madam refrained me whenever I tried to report it to you. She said it's between you and her. S-she said she won't touch food unless you sit with her and eat." She took her time to sob.

When she spoke, Hunter's heart skipped a beat, "She was certain that you will come, sir. For Madam you're a caring husband. She confidently skipped her meals because she assumed that you would come running to her when you read her messages."

After a pause she added, "You used to come home in time for her, sir. W-what has cha—" Thea lowered her face as Hunter threw her a cautioning gaze.

She knew better when to stop her mouth. However, she couldn't help it because her employee had shown warmth to her madam that was visible to be true to her eyes. Her curiousity was all over the place, and like everyone else, she wondered why he became so heartless to the woman who has been so devoting to him?

On the contrary, Hunter heaved nervously. He refused to admit that he was tensed. But deep down, his heart was falling apart.

The messages. He remembered.

Hunter grabbed his phone. His fingers twitched when he touched her name to access her chats.

A torrent of amalgamated emotions plummeted on him. She wrote many things and one of them was rather written boastfully as if she knew it would happen.

She wrote: I know you care, which is why I'm cutting down on my food intake, Hunter. From a fruit a day, I'll reduce it to a bite a day. I will not touch food unless you come home and eat with me.

"You..." He fisted his other hand and swung around to throw daggers of frustration at the door of her ward.

One of her messages read: I feel my intestines squeezing from hunger, Hunter. I'll definitely die of hunger if not this pain in my chest. Come home soon.

"Your face is colorless, Hunter. Are you guilty? Do you blame yourself for this..."

Cole was back, and right now he pointed at himself— basically the blood on his blue shirt.

His face became dull as his eyes blinked with pity for his best friend's wife.

"She was chanting your name in her unconsciousness, Hunter. Don't hurt her so much." Cole spoke softly.

"Look, I know Zara is very special. But she was special in the past. For two years that she left, Claire took care of you like a baby. She's been patient with you and constantly smiling even if you threw a fit of frustration or ignored her. She's been holding onto you like one holds on a rock or outgrown root to prevent themselves from falling." Cole came closer.

His gait was tired and it was a friend talking to his friend when he spoke, "Claire deserves your love and compassion, Hunter. She should be in your present and future. Not a lover who left you sulking to marry another."

Hunter didn't react. But the frigidity of his gaze expressed many things.

"Engulf her when she's still doting on you. Or else a time will come when you will crave for her attention and get silence in response."

After a moment of deafening silence Cole motioned at the door.

"She's put to sleep for now. You can go and see her though."

Hunter strutted towards the door quietly. Before he entered, Cole announced, "Reflect on what I said, homie. All of us wish the best for you. And your best lies in Claire's arms."

Hunter swung the door ajar and the view of Claire nestled in bed, with machines around her, made his eyes freeze. Sitting on the stool he faintly caressed her hand that was pierced with IV drip needle.

Her face has lost its rosy tint, her lips dry like withered petals of rose. Even then she appeared exquisitely beautiful. Marring her features was the white bandage on her forehead. On the left side, in the middle, was a circular patch of visible blood.

Hunter touched it gently. Out of his own accord he bent down to kiss her dry lips. Instantly his body became awake. He caressed her cheek and stared at her face in surprise.

This feeling he was feeling— of tranquility— rendered him motionless. He didn't feel this way when he kissed Zara either.

He kissed her forehead and whispered to her, "Wake up, Claire. I like it when you're fighting me. Wake up and challenge me."

***

"Wake up, Claire," That voice was edged with hoarseness.

But it infused within her being a feeling of placidity. Claire could see black but deep down she felt her heart radiating in happiness.

"Wake up and challenge me." The words boosted her courage.

She battled with the heaviness in her body. Her lashes hurt as she forced them to open but when she eventually undid them, she found nobody. Claire was taking in her surroundings when she heard the voice again.

"Cancel my schedule and turn all my meetings online. My wife is in the hospital so I will not come to work for a few days."

Claire forgot to breathe when she saw him walking in. Her eyes glowed and a feeling of contentment filled her chest.

"Hunter, you came." She whispered to herself as she saw him coming in.

By that time Hunter had disconnected the call. Their eyes met, and what they felt, made both their bodies tremble.

While a soft grin curved on Claire's dry lips, Hunter's twisted. Anger bubbled in his eyes as he recalled her messages.

I'm cutting down on my food intake, Hunter. From a fruit a day, I'll reduce it to a bite a day. I will not touch food unless you come home and eat with me.

"You..." He started, but it was interrupted by the ringing of his phone.

Making a growling face Hunter regarded the caller ID. It was Enzo, the guard he appointed at his penthouse to take care of Zara.

At that moment, Claire disappeared for him. All he could think of was Zara as he answered the call.

"Hello,"

"S-sir," Enzo's voice was lethally tense. "Miss Levine is kidnapped."

"No way!!! My Zara can't...

She..." Hunter lost his wits.

Claire watched him with a frown as she heard Zara's name.

"Hunter, what happened?"

She was upset that she just got up and the first thing she listens from her husband is the name of his ex-lover.

Much to her dismay, Hunter swung around and left her ward as if she wasn't his wife but any random woman who didn't deserve his attention.

Tbc...

Hunter is collecting haters for himself, isn't he?

But poor Claire, shouldn't she just give up already? Would you strive to be with such man who wants to divorce you for his ex-lover? Comment and let us know.

14While the lines of worry lessened around Cole's mouth as the ladies seemed to notice his words, Claire scanned his face for visible lies.He could be lying to fool her. Unfortunately, all she saw was genuinity. Moreover, he had no reason to lie. He may be Hunter's best friend, he was supporting Claire."Nice excuse but my friend and I are not imbeciles. 15"Claire!!!" Penelope shrieked her name out of shock as she watched her friend go down on her knees.Claire was being helped by her when two strong arms came around her shoulders. A knot seemed to untie within her chest as a faint smile crossed her lips."Hun—" Her mouth hung open on a gasp as Claire observed the face mere inches away from her."Jesus Christ! You are burning with fever, Claire. Come on, get up. Let me take you to your ward." That was Cole furrowing his brows in concern at her.The dam of miseries seemed to unbolt in her heart. Claire flickered her heavy lashes. She looked behind Cole's shoulders at her husband, regarding her with a detached stare.Hunter didn't seem in his senses. Even if he was then he didn't care one bit about her. He was right there by the wall, in the same position, just his face's angle had lowered to look at her."Come on, give me your hand." 16Penelope was too inflamed by Hunter's behaviour to keep her mouth shut. However, Cole eyed her dangerously. It reminded Penelope of the doctor's words. They should keep stress causing factors away from her."Err... I was saying... I was saying that though Hunter was worried for Zara he didn't forget to check up on you, Claire. Hunter spent his nights sitting by you on this stool. He never left you alone for once throughout the night and his back is brutally stiff now." Penelope blurted out.She peered at Cole as if asking with her gaze if her lie was up to the mark. Since the doctor said they must not give her stress, the best way to avoid it was to give her happy news so her mood would be elevated. But Cole's blazing glare indicated that it was more than too much.Claire wouldn't believe that provided that Hunter hardly waited to see her when she last woke up. Even on that night when Zara was being operated in the operation room and Claire fell on the floor while getting up, Hunter

17"Yes," Claire answered with a grin that was neither relieving nor soft to the eyes. With trembling hands Penelope passed her phone to her and watched as she searched for Daniel Calvart, Hunter's lawyer's number. Both of them were caught by surprise when her phone blared loudly. For a moment Penelope lost her breaths as she thought it was Dominic, Claire's father. She couldn't afford to have him call his daughter now as she had lied to him that they were in Claire's house for a few days. She had assured him that when he saw his daughter next, it would be accompanied with good news of her leaving her heartless husband.Whatever had transpired with Claire was known by very few people. Nobody from Claire's family knew about her condition. About her being in hospital for being neglected by her husband and torturing herself with starvation."Monty? Who's that?" 18"Your instincts were right about her. Zara indeed contributed to her husband's demise. She included heart attack causing pills in his medication to get rid of him. It wouldn't have been tough for her to do it considering that she's a medical student. Faking his death as a heart attack was simpler for her because she was friends with a well-known doctor in Silverhills with whom she met during her marriage. More like friends with benefits.” Monty gave his insights while Claire and Penelope were reading Zara's husband's fake and real autopsy reports.Monty really did a great job. He got so many evidence, both faked by Zara and the real copy, along with his hand drawn connections and corrections in places where the information was inaccurate."Zara left Hunter in greed of living an opulent life as her fiancé, Clifford Phillips, was at the peak of success and Hunter was still climbing the ladders to the same position. 286Hunter stared at her, thrown off guard by her words. He reflected back on their meeting in the dark alley, and indeed what he realized made his mouth open a little. Mona hadn't looked like she intended to do anything physically with him. Her grin back then had been playful— one that of a naughty child who knew he was notorious for his mischief. "You can say that I was testing your loyalty towards Claire. I didn't intend to do anything mischievous, Hunter. But you see, Claire ruined everything when she interrupted." Her lips lifted in a sneer as she showed him her left cheek. There was a visible claw mark on her skin from Claire's nails. The scratch was swelling, its edges inflamed and red. Hunter felt bad for her. Now that he knew that Mona didn't mean to do anything condemning in the dark alley of the mall with him, he felt the need to apologize to her on behalf of Claire, but Mona beat him to it as tears flashed in her eyes."No, Hunter. I might want to see you with Claire an

285Hunter's body worked on its own. He felt like someone had trespassed into his territory and snatched one of his shirts that Mona was folding. He growled at her as his eyes seemed to darken even more. In the dim lights he came off as a hunter ready to tear his teeth into her skin and kill her. It wasn't a surprise that Mona was unaffected. She just rolled her eyes and lifted her finely manicured hand to blow over her nails."What the hell are you doing here? How did you come inside?" Hunter hissed."I was trying to be helpful as you can see." Mona said while casting a gaze around.Hunter's walk-in closet was a mess. It looked like a clothes manufacturing factory, unfolded shirts lying here and there, some trousers on the floor as if they were dropped just there after trying them on."I don't need your fucking help, alright! Just tell me why you are here and get the hell out." Hunter gritted out between his clenched teeth.Mona watched his knuckles whiten as he fisted on the shirt

Hunter smiled a little awkwardly."That's because you're used to having everything done meticulously, Mr. Billionaire. But for normal people like us some mess and chaos is welcome.""Well then," Hunter sighed. "I'll have to make sure there's some chaos in our relationship."Claire chuckled. Later on, they hopped back on the bike and Claire was the one handling it. Hunter sat behind her, admiring her as she flawlessly rode the bike. There were no words exchanged until Claire stopped the bike on the street some yards away from her house.Hunter blinked his eyes as he looked around."Why here, Dove?""Scott's room's window." She pointed as from where they stood they could clearly see that Scott's room's lights were on."Oh." You can work at your father's or mine— wherever you're comfortable and I'd always come to pick you up so we can go home together." Hunter's voice was like warm honey, soothing and sweet. But Claire had more to acknowledge than just his heart-touching words. The surrounding was one of them. What had been a lake enveloped in a blanket of darkness was now glowing with golden lights. It felt as though the blanket was lifted off, revealing the beauty it had hidden underneath. "I'll always cherish you, love you and give you space. You will never have to question your worth or love for me.... Because I'll make sure I live up to your expectations." The pause he took allowed Claire to notice where they were standing— in the middle of a four post bamboo arch. There were colorful flowers and green leaves

I won't do anything that would multiply your bad memories. Not on purpose!"Claire took a lingering gaze at him before she nodded again and carefully got down of the bike. 281Although Dominic had been reluctant in the beginning, he told his wife that Hunter had called him a while before the dinner. He wanted to come to their mansion for some reason. Dominic revealed that Hunter prepared some kind of gift for their daughter, and needed his help to execute it. His request was to dim down the lights of the lamps around their garden so Hunter could have a dark set-up. And then the next thing that happened was that they heard commotion outside their window. Since their room was on the ground floor, they heard and saw everything. Hunter was in the garden, and he wasn't alone. His guards were there to help him whatever he planned to do for Claire. Dominic and Andrea also read the messages on the cardboards that Hunter held. One can say that Hunter's surprise proposal wasn't really a secret. His In-laws— correction, his ex-in-laws, who were about to become his in-laws again, had front-row seats to the whole thing. They read every message, saw every expressi

"I don't consider that wrong because what I've done is enough reason for someone to put a blade through my heart.""Hunter!" Claire glared at him, but obviously it was so dark that he couldn't see it. But her hold around his neck, it indicated that she was disappointed. "I'm telling the truth, Claire. What do you think? That I'm only committing my mistakes in front of you. If that's what you think then you don't know me at all." The determination in his voice steeled her spine. "Fixing things with you was my first step toward fixing everything I destroyed." • Regretting Divorce   Chapter 278

278Claire wasn't happy. Hunter did make mistakes, but that didn't make him a loser. A loser would never accept his mistake. A loser always avoids it and often others have to guilt-trip him to take responsibility for his actions. That, or he's blamed until he's forced to accept his mistakes. However, he would never willingly own up to them. Claire had a big lecture to give to him on this topic. She showed a phone sign with her finger as she put it near her ear, indicating that she was going to call him. But Hunter quickly shook his head and motioned down at the cardboard. Not many were left and Claire decided to stay. She probably read the worst ones, she deemed, as she folded her hands and waited for him to reveal the new messages. It read: On the other hand, you're so charming, honest, kind and considerate. Another one said: I'm nothing in front of you. Another one: Everyone loves you for who you are. As for me...
