Her heart was crushed into a pulp under the weight of those words.

Wiping her tears, Claire lifted her face. She held her head high as she gave him a tight smile with a challenging gaze.

"Then let me tell you, Mr. Hunter MacIntyre, I will also fight for what is mine. You are mine. I'm not letting any widowed whore have my husband."

Hunter opened his mouth. But before he snapped at her, she whirled around and went up the stairs to their bedroom.

A drumbeat of madness pounded at the back of Hunter's eyes. He fisted his hands while following after her. Hunter caught Claire right outside the bedroom. He pinned her to the wall and leaned in, whispering right before her lips.

"Since when I became yours, huh? As far as I can remember you have always been at my mercy."

Hunter hoped to intimidate her. But he should have known that by leaving her outside their anniversary party's venue he made her bones persistent and determination of stone. He killed her emotions.

"You became mine the minute I laid my eyes on you, dearest husband." Hunter chuckled at her reply.

"You can't have what is already taken."

"Right. But you can have it if it's dumped by someone else and you pick it up. And Zara dumped you." A muscle at his jaw ticked.

Hunter left her standing as he stormed inside their room.

She followed him inside. The corners of her eyes burned with forming tears as she watched him rummage through the drawers of their closet for something.

Then he drew out an envelope from a drawer. She witnessed him forwarding it to her.

"What's this?" She asked as she opened the envelope and assessed the papers.

Claire's heart dropped in her belly. Her eyes enlarged and hot tears spilled from her eyes as she read the words written in bold weighing down on her: DIVORCE AGREEMENT.

“What the hell is this?” Claire yelled between her sobs.

“Check the fourth page, the division of assets. My property is divided between us just as I told you downstairs. But if you want more then I will have it added too.”

She watched him look for a pen. When he found and forwarded it to her, Claire gave him a nefarious smirk. Then she tore the papers in two halves and tossed them in the air.

It sparked his anger. Hunter weaved his fingers through her tresses and pulled her close. He let out a chuckle that coursed a terrorising wave through her body.

"I'll have new divorce papers prepared and you will sign them, Claire." He released her and turned around.

This time it was her who chuckled, "In your dreams."

He stopped in his tracks and cast her a glance that burned holes in her flesh,  "So you won't leave me, huh?"

"I am your wife. I took holy vows to stick by your side forever."

Hunter grinned evilly, "Fine then, I will hurt you so much you will be forced to leave me."

He walked out of their room while Claire smiled sadly to herself.

She mumbled, 'Fine, let's see how far you can go to be with her. I will also try my best to keep our marriage together. Let's see who wins this war, Hunter.'

Claire stood there for a long while. It was a wandering bird that flew through the window and chirped loudly that fragmented her reverie. She blinked distressful tears and unzipped the dress.

It fell into a heap around her feet. Claire stepped out and entered the bathroom. She stood under a shower and let her tears loose. She cried her heart out. She cried loudly and helplessly.

Just when she thought she was going to get the sky to rule on, she was thrown back in the dirt on the ground.

She blamed Zara for Hunter's changed behaviour. After all, it was after her arrival that he became indifferent to her. It would have been better if she didn't come.

Wrapping a towel around her, she came out. Just as she was thinking about what dress to wear, she realized something.

"Zara left Bloomcrest two years ago to live with her husband, who I believe was not from here. Then why would she come here to bury him?" She spoke to herself.

There was no hidden fact about it that it was all planned. Zara's arrival right on their anniversary day was too obvious to the eye.

"I will have to dig into her history. Where Zara lived before and how exactly her husband died, I will have to find out everything to make Hunter see the truth himself. Her husband's death and her return to Bloomcrest around our anniversary day don't sit well with me. It is not a mere coincidence for sure. I will have to investigate. But first I need to grab some food."

With wet hair she descended the stairs and came down. Obviously, she was not going to starve while there was a huge battle taking place outside her house.

She needs strength to keep the opponent from breaking into her house and destroying her family.

"Claire," Cole's voice stopped her from going to the kitchen.

She observed her husband's best friend was waiting in the living room for her. He got up when he saw her and moved towards her while his eyes remained stationed on her face.

Compared to yesterday, she looked even more pale and sick. But that assuring smile warmed his heart.

"Didn't expect to see you in the morning, Cole. What brings you here? If you want to meet Hunter then you will have to go to his office. I hope he went there." She said with a raise of her brow.

Cole studied her and said, "I came here for you."

"For me? Why?" She chuckled.

"Yesterday has been a tough day for you...."

"And a memorable one." Claire said with a wink. "But I'm over that. Come, join me for breakfast."

Cole was amazed with her behaviour. For a moment he was afraid that the trauma of Hunter leaving her outside their party's venue had got to her head.

Anyway, he trailed along in her wake to the kitchen. Cole mounted one of the two stools arranged by the working counter and watched as Claire put a pan on the flame and broke two eggs in it.

His eyes escalated in amusement. For someone who had a heartbreaking day right on their marriage anniversary, Claire appeared quite calm and composed.

As she scrambled the eggs with a spatula he spoke, "Has Hunter come home?"

"Yeah, and we talked."

"You did?" Cole scratched his head. "What did he say?"

"The same thing... Wanting a divorce and all." Claire shrugged.

Surprise etched his forehead in fine lines as he watched her. This Claire was different from the one he knew earlier. Something seriously wrong with her.

However, he remained quiet and kept her company as they finished their breakfast. When it was time to enjoy some fresh juice that she extracted from fruits, Cole asked.

"What did you say about the divorce, Claire?" Cole's voice was slightly tense.

Of course he knew his best friend's obsession for Zara.

At this point when she was back he wanted to know what Claire was hoping to do because he was certain Hunter would leave no stone unturned to be with Zara after waiting all these years for her.

"Hunter is stuck with me until death do us apart." She said with a smirk that was neither good nor bad.

Tbc..

6Cole's mouth fell agape in sheer astonishment. This definitely has to be a doppelganger of Claire.Otherwise his best friend's wife was timid and mute. She barely opened her mouth to speak. And even if she was slandered, she found it was better to meet them with silence than to retort."What? Is something on my face?" Claire asked with a grin.Cole nodded his head as he confessed, "You have become fierce. I like this side of you.""Thanks. I had to become outspoken for the sake of my marriage. I have to save Hunter and my relation, Cole. And I will need your help with it.""I am always here for you two, Claire. Just let me know how I can help." He liked her spirit."Okay, listen to me," She held his gaze. "I want to gather information on Zara. Cole, I feel that her return is deliberate and that her husband's death is not natural."Cole's back stiffened. His eyebrows knitted together as he suppressed himself from looking disappointed. 7The cameras flashed just as Claire crossed the gate and came to this side to meet the waiting crowd of journalists. "Mrs. MacIntyre or Miss Argent? Which one do you prefer?" Irritated by the question, Claire forced her lips to curve. Her grin carried a hint of mockery as she faced the cameras before holding the gaze of the journalist who asked her the question."What should I call you- a journalist or a woman with impaired eyesight? Or rather... a brainless journalist with impaired eyesight? Which one do you prefer?"Her Savage reply made the woman chuckle sheepishly in embarrassment. The others stared at Claire with an impressed glance as she never spoke like this before. It seemed that the kitten had transformed her claws finally."Do you see this sparkling big diamond? This shows that I am married. Hence I will prefer Mrs. MacIntyre now and for the rest of my life." Someone from the mass of journalists clapped in amusement. The lady mouthed a small apology while another person

8Dusk hung over Bloomcrest while the winds rolled over calmly. In her Villa, Claire worked tirelessly in the kitchen. She was preparing food for Hunter. There was a cheerful smile on her face as though she was very happy in her marriage.Thea was helping in the kitchen. She took the dishes to the dining table as they were filled with a new dish by Claire. As she returned after her fourth round, she nervously pinched her fingers and spoke in a hushed tone. "Madam, I don't think Mr. MacIntyre will return home today. S-so I'm afraid all this food you're making is going to go wasted." "I left a message to Hunter in the evening to come home soon for dinner. He might have seen it and will be here anytime now." Claire said confidently. Beside her Thea made a pitiful face as she thought, 'You're dreaming with open eyes, madam. Your husband is gone. He's not yours any more. Why can't you see it?' "Can you pass me the ketchup please?" Claire asked. Thea remained quiet and helped the lady

9Hunter stared at her last message with cold eyes. 'Playing stubborn? I like it.' He mumbled while putting a hand under his head. He was in the penthouse on the sofa in the living room, staring at the door of the room Zara was in. Although he insisted on sleeping in bed with her and cuddling her, she refused him without blinking an eye. Zara claimed that she was a widow and Hunter was a married man. A married man with a loving and dedicated wife. It would not be appropriate to sleep with him while his wife was waiting for him in their house. Though the flames of need to be held tight were evident in her eyes, she suggested maintaining space. This was one of the qualities in Zara that Hunter was crazy about. She sacrificed her life and love for others. She prioritized others' feelings over hers. She didn't give herself the attention and praise she deserved. All her life, she thought about others. Then why shouldn't Hunter thrive to give her a deserving happy life? She deserved to

10Hunter didn't have to ask about his wife at the reception. A doctor who noticed him entering inside, who was talking to a nurse, left his conversation incomplete to escort the heir of MacIntyre empire to his wife's ward.Obviously Claire had to be taken to the VIP floor and kept in the biggest ward. As Hunter walked nearer to her, his body started growing sweaty and heart thundered in his chest. This feeling was equivalent to feeling the soul leaving one's body. What amazed him more was the fact that he was feeling this way for his wife who he was desperately trying to dispose of to be with his real lover.'What the hell!' A lump formed in his throat as he heard himself swearing in shock. In front of him were Thea and Cole sitting on a bench. While the old woman was rubbing and squeezing her hands in nervousness, his best friend sat emotionlessly staring at his shoes. However, they had one thing in common. 11Pain engulfed Claire. Her body became numb as she expressionlessly stared at nowhere in the air.She didn't know what day it was or how long she had been asleep in a hospital bed, but she knew that not eating proper food for ten days caused huge damage to her body. She could feel her bones trembling. Her body felt paper light while her lashes weighed down with exhaustion. All of this she did was for what? Her husband didn't even care to spare her a glance when he saw her.It was after ten days they met. But still, he left hurriedly as if she was not in a hospital bed with a bandage on the head. The screeching sound of parting door made her lift her eyes. Claire noticed Cole standing on the doorstep with a frown."What's up with your husband? He left like a hurricane." He came inside."Something to do with Zara." Claire spoke in a voice lacking emotions. It still oozed with pain.Cole's back stiffened. He gritted his teeth as he shook his head."Zara!" 243"I want to see that bitch now!" Those words swept over Claire like hot water, scalding her skin with goosebumps. It was followed by a monstrous growl, one that seemed to make every object in the hall shake in its intensity. Then words, like the striking of dangerously sharpened katana, were delivered by none other than a fuming Hunter. "Avery, either you put a leash on her corrupted mouth or I strangle her throat unless she's dead!" Hunter threateningly stepped towards the person in question who scoffed uncaringly."First you put a leash on your fúcking mouth, MacIntyre. You're talking to my mom. Be respectful... Or else," Tyler came to view. Claire watched him put a hand on Hunter's chest and thrust him back. Hunter didn't budge though. He stood on his spot, his back to Claire. But it wasn't difficult to envision his facial expression. Claire knew how he looked when he was super mad. She could see his jaw ticking as he tried to keep his fury in control. 242Claire sat quietly. She wanted to cover her ears so she wouldn't hear grandma extol her arrogant ex-husband. Anyway, she endured it with a straight face. "I haven't visited Bloomcrest in a while but I have many friends there. To be blunt, I have many eyes and ears to see and hear for me. They told me Hunter's appearance after your divorce and one of them claimed that Hunter was resorting after bringing you back. That was quick. As a woman who was oppressed by her husband all her life, I felt inclined to see Hunter redeeming himself for you." Grandma paused for a break. "And I really admired Hunter.... Way before he started having a problem with my grandson. He made me realize not all men are the same. Some own up to their mistakes and want to make amends. That's the reason why I decided to play cupid in your lives, Claire." "But what you're doing now...." Grandma eyed Claire disapprovingly. "I think it's a bit too much. In fact, it's a lot. Claire didn't dare leave the space she had grown comfortable in. She feared crossing paths with her ex-husband again... Worried that his captivating looks might draw her back into his arms. She didn't want that. He hadn't been able to connect with Hunter since that night he came back home to tell him that he made a huge mess. Cole was maddened that night. How could Hunter be so stupid? No guy in his sane mind would tell his woman about the times he tried to cheat on her. To say Hunter broke it on her when she was at her lowest point mentally. Claire's reaction was natural. In fact, she was very soft and leniently handling him.... At least, that's what it seemed unless he saw the images of her and Tyler kissing each other while Hunter was sitting on his knees in front of them. Claire was taking her revenge with a fervor. "Damn, this is not good. Claire is ruining her reputation because of this idiot!" Cole shook his head. He searched in depth and his jaw unhinged in a moment of disbelief. "Is th

239"Oh my..." Claire's mouth slackened as her eyes widened in pure shock. Her feed was full of posts worshipping Hunter and his attempt to apologize to her at the tourist spot. Fan edits were mind boggling. They made a crown on his head and captioned the picture with cheesy lines and dialogues from novels and series like he wasn't sitting on his knees apologizing to his ex-wife for cheating on her. They made it seem like he was saving the world by going on his knees. The more she scrolled, the more astonishing the edits became.Claire didn't even try to go near the comments section. Almost every second post was stuffed with thousands of comments. Had Hunter not been a celebrity billionaire, she would have assumed it was his PR doing this thing to elevate in the eyes of the society. But Hunter needed no such thing. 238Claire was unable to breath. Her skin was burning even though he wasn't touching her anywhere. Her brows furrowed. He. Wasn't. Touching. Her. Why? She gazed in his eyes and saw the answer. He was hurt. He. Was. Hurt. His hands trembled at his sides. Hunter had never wanted anything more than to touch her after he realized he loved her. However, last night was painful. He counted hours, his ears on high alert, hoping to hear any sound coming from her room. But all he heard was Tyler leave— three hours later. Hunter's teeth clenched recalling Tyler Murphy's parting remark. "It was fun, Claire! We should do it often."It's not like Hunter didn't know what they were doing, but Tyler making it obvious through his remark exhausted his remaining battery percent on love meter that he was left with. The somberness whipped into his features was the outcome of exhaustion he suffered last night. "We can continue this game in our country and I have a feeling you have a lot to catch up wit

237There was slight fog outside the window when Claire opened her eyes in the morning. She felt goosebumps on her bare arms and her feet stung the moment she put them on the floor. There was no sun out and the sky was gloomy just like her thoughts. Claire hugged her arms and let out a sigh. Her temples were throbbing. She hadn't gotten the best of sleep last night. Her mind was occupied by the event of the afternoon, Hunter's images making her mind numb. She cried even on her pillow after Tyler left. His company was soothing. He made her feel better, but when he stepped out of her room, the air had become tense and stuffy again. She spent most of the hours twisting from one side to another. She recalled it was during the lift of darkness when she drifted off to sleep. Claire looked at the clock on the wall. Not much time has passed since she slept. Just two hours. She was gazing out when something crept within her, making her lean on the sill of the window and look out to her right

236Claire was taken aback. She chuckled, realizing Tyler was siding with Hunter. She didn't call him out for defending Hunter and kept the conversation going. "Yeah, Zara and her leave... I know that. He was depressed by her departure." She said so flatly that Tyler couldn't help but wince. "God, I think I know why you're so pissed. You have two solid reasons. One is obviously Hunter's confession and second is Zara. You're holding those both against him to make him pay, aren't you?""It was never a secret!" "It wasn't, I know, but Claire..." Tyler heaved. "Well, as a person who was cheated and abandoned by his lover, I can understand both of your feelings. I know what it feels to know when your lover has betrayed you. And I also know what it feels like when they leave you without a proper closure.""So Claire..." Tyler stiffened his shoulders. "From a man's perspective, I don't think what Hunter did was wrong. 235"Shít! I'm sorry, Claire. I didn't think it would tear. I'm sorry." Tyler spoke ruefully. He watched as Claire's face paled and some tears strolled out of her eyes. The room was engulfed by vulnerable silence again and the tension returned. Despite that Tyler smiled seeing her reaction. 'You're very lucky, Hunter. How much I wish Ezma felt this way after sleeping with you. But that bítch had no remorse on her face. She even seemed relaxed about getting rid of me.' He mused and tried to take the letter from her. He reached out for the two pieces of the paper. Claire gave him a warning look as if it was her heart he was asking for, not the letter. The cracks on her lips amazed him, prompting him to smile wider. 'Claire even wounded her mouth for kissing me. This is the love I desire in my life. On the other hand, I tasted ugly betrayal. Ezma hadn't even tried to cover herself when I found her naked in bed beside your sleeping figure, Hunter.' The faint ache in Tyler's chest from
