Dusk hung over Bloomcrest while the winds rolled over calmly. In her Villa, Claire worked tirelessly in the kitchen. She was preparing food for Hunter. There was a cheerful smile on her face as though she was very happy in her marriage.

Thea was helping in the kitchen. She took the dishes to the dining table as they were filled with a new dish by Claire. As she returned after her fourth round, she nervously pinched her fingers and spoke in a hushed tone.

"Madam, I don't think Mr. MacIntyre will return home today. S-so I'm afraid all this food you're making is going to go wasted."

"I left a message to Hunter in the evening to come home soon for dinner. He might have seen it and will be here anytime now." Claire said confidently.

Beside her Thea made a pitiful face as she thought, 'You're dreaming with open eyes, madam. Your husband is gone. He's not yours any more. Why can't you see it?'

"Can you pass me the ketchup please?" Claire asked.

Thea remained quiet and helped the lady of the house with the food. They took it to the dining table. Claire requested Thea to sit with her until Hunter arrived. Not that Thea lived elsewhere and she had to depart earlier.

She has been with the MacIntyres since Hunter's birth. The old lady had no children or relatives. Hence, she was permanently hired by the MacIntyres long ago. She was provided shelter and monthly remuneration for the services she rendered.

She was humble and happened to play the role of a mother in Hunter's life more than his biological mother. Hence, when he returned from overseas he requested to take Thea with her in his villa. She had her own little cabinet in the backyard facing the lake while the villa was located on the cliff of a mountain, with exotic views of deep valleys and mountains.

Not to mention that this Villa was Hunter's dream house which he planned with Zara when they were dating. But then, months before he was to propose to her for marriage, she left him.

And then Hunter married Claire and brought her into the house he made with love for himself and the love of his life Zara.

Thea noticed the frown forming on her madam's face. After all, it was going to be three hours in ten minutes since they're waiting. Except that there was no sign of Hunter's return.

'I knew he wouldn't come. Hunter will never leave Zara alone for one second now he's found her back in his life. I wish Claire could see it and take the hint. Her marriage is in smithereens.' Thea mused watching Claire gaze at the clock impatiently.

"Madam, why don't we get started with our dinner? I... I think sir is busy with work." Thea spoke in order to avert Claire's attention from waiting for her husband.

Deep down she knew he had to be with Zara. But to lessen her sadness and distract her mind, Thea mentioned work.

"I'm fine, Thea. I will wait for Hunter. Why don't you go ahead and get started first? You have to take your medicine too."

Although her heart went out for Claire, Thea knew it would be a waste of time trying to explain anything to her anything. She filled a plate of food for herself from what Claire made for her husband.

"I hope you don't mind, Mrs. MacIntyre! I've been drooling on the smell of the food in the kitchen."

"Please, take as much as you want." Claire delightfully gestured to the table laden with dishes of a variety of food.

'At least someone is eating my food.' Claire sighed after Thea took her leave.

The entire night she waited for Hunter. In between, she made sure to leave messages to Hunter.

What Claire realized was that he was looking at all her messages. But silently. There was no response from him as though it was useless and unimportant.

Soon the sun smiled upon the horizon whereas on the dining table, Claire bit back tears of grief.

He didn't come home for dinner.

Rubbing a hand on her wet cheeks, Claire left the food on the table and came back to her home. She threw herself on the bed as her bones were awfully screaming in pain from sitting at the table all night, in wait for her cruel husband.

Claire stared at the ceiling as various thoughts whirled in her mind.

'What am I doing? Hunter is a heartless man. He never showed me any spousal care for two years. Why am I wasting my efforts and time on him like this?' She wondered with blurry eyes as tears oozed uncontrollably.

'He said that I am not important. I was hardly thought about in these two years of marriage. He openly claimed that I will never have any better place in his life. Then what am I working for?' She opened her mouth and allowed her sobs to echo in the quiet room as sunray snuck inside the room, radiating it.

Except that there was nothing that could radiate her dark life.

Claire reached out for her phone beside her. She checked Hunter's chat. He was online. The blue ticks beside her messages made something in her chest toss and twist.

It was self-respect that she was murdering every moment for her husband.

Claire sucked in a shivery breath as she left a new message to him: Where are you now?

Much to her dismay and rising sorrow, he read her message within a second.

But still... No reply.

She typed again: I made all your favorite dishes. I thought we'll eat together.

Seen again.

Claire typed next: You think it's funny? Or that it would break me?

Hunter's behaviour clawed through her heart. Suddenly her eyes smoldered as she grit her teeth angrily.

'Hunter MacIntyre, you think not returning home will make me leave you? It only makes my determination of steel.'

Claire left a final message with a stubborn sneer before she closed her eyes to get some sleep: The menu for today's lunch is a surprise. See you then. Love you, Honey.

Tbc...

 Do you think he'll come???

How many of you think Claire will win this war? Should she hope for a future with Hunter?

  • Regretting Divorce   Chapter 394

394Hunter was back for a funeral, for the third time, with the same colorless face and puffy red eyes he had during the first two times. Except that, they were in a graveyard this time. It was located in their city's oldest church of Mother Mary. With Reggie’s parents resting here, Hunter thought it best to bring him here too, so he could reunite with them. He swallowed hard as he watched Reggie's grave being filled back with soil. Loud sobs came from beside him. He gazed from the corner of his eyes at Reggie's girlfriend and younger sister, and felt his stomach bottoming out.Reggie was their provider. Mostly his sister's. He was very young when his parents passed away. With what little they left behind for him and his sister, he attained his education. Since it wasn't very huge, Reggie also had to work several part time jobs. Hunter knew all this because Reggie went to the same school as him. He was talented and intelligent. He didn't make friends as he didn't want any distracti

393Hunter was scared to his wits now. He hadn't been as disturbed before. The fact that Penny was pregnant made his worry skyrocket. When he came back home, he saw a familiar guy standing outside the gates of his house with Cole. Hunter recognized him at once as he drove closer."Monty!" He came out of the car."Mr. MacIntyre." Monty came forward with an extended hand. "It's amusing that you still recognize me."Monty was Claire's friend from college. He was a detective by profession who exposed Zara’s secrets to Claire days before they got divorced. Hunter was both relieved and hopeful to see him there.'Why didn't I think about him before? He discovered Zara’s dark secrets earlier on. Finding her won't be hard for him' Hunter mused as he looked at him."Mr. Wordsmith told me about Penny. It's really shocking. I promise you I'll do my best to help find her before Zara can even touch a hair on her head." Monty said.Hunter led him inside his house, all while smiling at Cole for bring

392Claire dashed inside what used to be her 'dream home' once and looked around hastily. The living hall was quiet. She called out for Thea but no reply came.Assuming that everyone must be up in the bedroom, she climbed the stairs. She was half way up when she heard footsteps. Claire turned around and froze when her eyes met with Hunter's.They had a fierce longing in them alongside grudge and emptiness. He was stunned to find her in 'his' house after all these weeks."P-penny... I heard about it from dad. Is it true?" Claire asked while descending the stairs slowly.Hunter just stared at her before he nodded, which caused Claire's knees to turn to mush. She sat down on the fourth step as her eyes tore up. Hunter's arms stopped a few inches away from her shoulders. His body had acted on an impulse when he saw her body going down and came running towards her to hold her.Feeling his heart banging in his chest, he looked away."Zara called me an hour ago. I don't know why she got Penn

391"Claire, tell me." "Penny... I'm worried about my future. Hunter and I... I don't think he wants us to be together any more. He's hurt and—" "Bull shit! I get that you were mean to him but what makes you think Hunter won't want this child?" "I didn't say that he wouldn't want the child. It's just..." Claire sounded like she was on the verge of crying."Go on, Claire." "I've known Hunter since I was a teenager, and I know he's truly hurt by what I said and all that happened. Penny, I'm afraid what if... What if he... He takes the child away. I mean... I know what Hunter means when he says something... And him taking his ring off... I mean, what if he wants just the baby and not me. What if—""Claire! Claire! Calm down. You're just being delusional. Hunter will never do that. He's shown his love for you. So what if he's hurt!" Penny frowned at her. "It's just one slip on your part compared to his many. Hunter hurt you so many times and you still forgave him. Until now you’ve bee

390Claire coughed weakly into her fisted hand as her mother checked her forehead. "The fever has come down. Thank God." She smiled. "She's going to get well soon, mom. I've got some amazing news for her. It’ll brighten her spirits and get her as energetic as a foal." Penny said excitedly. Andrea chuckled and departed, leaving the girls alone. Penny occupied the spot next to Claire on the bed and hugged her happily. She rocked her back and forth. "Woah, why are you so jubilant? Did you hit the jackpot!" Claire giggled, struggling to keep her balance. "What? You're blushing, Penny. What is it?" "Oh Laire, I'm soo happy.""Tell me quickly. I want to be happy too!" Claire tried to match her excitement. The last three weeks have been emotionally draining for Claire. Hunter's parents' death has caused her trauma that affected her health. • Regretting Divorce   Chapter 389

389The sky was a little clear tonight. The moon drifted in and out of sight behind the shifting clouds and the winds were soft. Cole was standing out on the patio, smoking. He was lost in deep and critical thinking. Hunter peeked out at him through the door and decided to approach him.He extended his palm out to Cole and pointed at his cigarette."You never smoke.""That was me from before. Now I do."Cole peered at Hunter ridiculously before slapping a new cigarette and a lighter on his palm. They didn't talk, they didn't look at each other. Their eyes gazed in the darkness or sometimes at the moon."Another one." Hunter said and Cole observed that Hunter had finished his cigarette while he was still on his first one. "What? Give me another cigarette." Hunter wiggled his fingers in front of him."Hunter, what are you doing? You don't touch a cigarette, let alone ask for another one within five minutes. Who are you trying to hurt? Yourself or Claire.""You don't need to know. This
