Chapter 1
“I’d never want you as my Luna, you’re fat, ugly and a bit too dark for me.”
His words cut me deep. My wolf Freya howled in my head. I’d just discovered he was my mate. I was always a nice person. I thought everyone liked me. I was adopted at two by the Greeley’s, the Beta family. When my parents disappeared, they treated me as their daughter. My brother Lance was the future beta, and my stupid mate was none other than Gael Ryker, the future alpha and he was what every alpha is, tall, muscular and extremely good looking. Gael had long golden-brown hair with eyes so gray, they shone like two diamonds, when the light hit him just right. He had dimples and a perfect set of white teeth. He had a full sleeve tatted on his right arm and tatts on his neck and across his back. The problem was he was an asshole, at least to me.
Oh me? I’m Phoenix Greeley, at least I think I am. I just turned 18 and have been a member of the Silver Moon pack forever. I never knew my parents or my last name, so I have my adopted parents name. I was loved and sheltered. My brother, Lance, also tried to include me in every event or outing he was involved in. Here’s the thing, My adopted family is white, yep blonde haired, blue eyed and me well I’m not white, I’m black mixed with some native American so I’m literally the fly in the buttermilk. My skin is the color of mocha or milk chocolate. I love my color, it’s rich and smooth, but some don’t appreciate it. I have light brown eyes; full lips and I’m built a little differently than other she-wolves. I’m 5’ 9”, have full breasts and hips; right now, I’m a 42DD with a slight pudge and a round bottom. I’m a little bigger than most she wolves and my hair is right at my shoulders with coily curls that I must manage or else I’ll have a full-blown afro, but I love my hair.
Back to the present, we’re at the back of the packhouse having a mating ball. That’s when unmated wolves can find their mates, if they are of age. We currently have five other packs here, as sometimes your mate won’t be in your pack, but perhaps a different one. So here we are, Gael and I and some of his friends and he’s speaking to me like this.
“Gael, baby here you are, I couldn’t find you anywhere.” Of course, to add insult to injury, Gael’s girlfriend for the past two years, Amy Walters saunters up grabbing his arm, and handing him a drink, he took a big swig of it. She’s another one who’s never had anything nice to say to me.
“Phoenix thinks she’s my mate, but of course I can’t get with that.” A few of his buddies laughed at that. I turned to walk away.
“Hold it bitch!” Amy grabbed my hair. “Baby, don’t you have something to say to her? You’re my mate.”
“With pleasure. I, Gael Ryker reject, you Phoenix Greeley as my mate and Luna. Accept it now!” He said that with his Alpha voice, but it had no effect on me.
He’s so stupid I could see the rejection had an impact on him. I jerked my hair back from Amy and held my head high, “I, Phoenix Greeley accept your rejection Gael Ryker, with pleasure.” I don’t know how I walked away from him when he was on the ground holding on to Amy watching me walk away.
I ran all the way home and I just wanted to get away, I had a great life here in the Silver Moon pack, it was all I’d ever known, but now for some reason I felt energized, and this little spot of the world wasn’t enough. I had an idea and I’d wait for my parents to come home to get their take on my next steps. I fell asleep when I heard my mom come in.
“Phee, you up?”
“Yes mama.”
“What happened tonight?”
“I found my mate and was rejected.” A small smile on my face, that morphed into tears. She gasped.
“Who? Who is the bastard that dared to reject my baby?”
“Don’t worry about that part, but I wanted to talk to you and daddy though.”
“About?”
I sighed, “Get dad mama, please.”
Later in my room, my parents sat on my bed with an utter look of horror on their faces.
“Absolutely not!” They both practically shouted at the same time.
My shoulders fell. “I need this. My life here will be hell. I need this.”
“Who the hell is it baby, I’m the Beta, nobody does that to my little girl, who is it?”
“Daddy, daddy please listen to me, I won’t say. I just really need this.”
I wanted to leave and join the Elite Werewolf Academy. I wanted to fight, I wanted to take out all my hatred and frustrations on anyone that would let me. There was nothing else left for me here, no friends, no mate, just my bestie, Sonya, who was like my sister, my brother and parents, but I needed to find Phoenix and I wouldn’t stop until I did.
“Dad sign me up so I can go.” The tears really fell now. I hated feeling so weak, but I knew what I needed, and this was it.
“Sweet pea you know the elite academy kills people. They root out the weak ones and they either run away into the phantom woods or commit suicide. I can’t let you go in good conscious.”
“Do you mean that I’m too weak to go, and would either kill myself, or run away and die? Thanks dad.”
“No honey, but you’ve never experienced anything like this before and I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“If I stay, I’ll die.” I got up from my bed and walked into my bathroom, ending the conversation.” You could hear my mom talking with my dad.
“Bill she’s hurting, and we haven’t a clue as to why, but I know we’re going to lose her either way. Let her get out and experience something in the world. We know she’ll be okay. She’s built for this.”
“Built for this?” What the hell did that mean?
After some tears and threats of violence to the mate that rejected me, they finally relented and decided to let me go. I was so excited. I called my best friend, my only friend, Sonya.
“Hey girl why didn’t you wait for me at the ball? There were some of the hottest wolves there. Unfortunately, I didn’t meet my mate, but boy did I get my fill of eye candy. I even made out with this one dude and whew if I weren’t saving myself for my mate, he’d have been the one. Oh shit, what’s up with you?”
“Sonya, I found my mate.”
“Girl stop, yeah? Okay, well who is it?” she was huffing in anticipation.
“Before I tell you, you have to, one, never speak of this to anyone; and two, he rejected me and you can never let on that you know, okay?”
“That’s a lot to ask, but okay.”
“It’s Gael and I’m leaving in two days to the Elite Werewolf Academy.” I thought the line went dead as she hadn’t said a word.
“Sonya?
“Why?” she sobbed, she was heartbroken. She made tears burn again in my eyes. “It’s okay really. He’s been a thorn in my side for years. He humiliated me and Amy was being herself, a real bitch. My stomach hurt some last night and believe it’s only going to get worse.”
“Oh shit.” She said. You’re going to feel the mating pains.” I heard her start to sob again.
“Please Sonya don’t cry, I’m holding on by a thread here. Thank you for being my ace, my bestie, the reason I’m strong enough to do this.”
“I’m going to miss you something awful, what am I going to do without you?”
I’ll be back, don’t know when, but I feel like this is something I must do. I’ve got to get out of here; and right now.”
“What’s Lance going to say? He’s not going to be happy, and he may squeeze the truth out about who your mate, ex mate is.”
That cut me hearing her refer to Gael as my ex-mate, but that’s exactly what he was. I was not looking forward to speaking to my brother. Beside Sonya, I’d miss Lance the most. Two hours later I was finally with Sonya and looking through my closet at what I was going to take with me. The only way one could get into the academy is with a recommendation from an Alpha or a Beta, or if you were a criminal, and this was your last chance before being sent to the silver mines and that was a fate worse than death. I didn’t care, I wanted and needed this freedom to become whoever I was. I’d just turned 18 a week ago and I was ready to get some questions answered, like why didn’t I shift? Why didn’t I totally break when I was rejected? And also, why did the betrayal pains not hospitalize me like it did other wolves? When a mate has been recognized, the bond begins to form. So even after a rejection the bond doesn’t completely break. That contingency plan was put in place by the Moon Goddess so that if mates came back later and wanted each other after an intimate act of kissing or sex, the bond would snap back into place. As I shook that thought out of my mind, my brother barged into my room.
“What the hell is this I hear about you leaving?” He was pissed. I always told him everything, but I couldn’t tell him this.
“Sorry LaLa,” that was the nickname I had for him since I was a little girl.
“Phee.” He sat on the bed and took a deep breath. “Tell me what happened, please.”
“I can’t, I don’t want to ruin your life here. Please for me LaLa, let it go.” He stood up abruptly.
“Fuck no I won’t let it go! You’re my sister and if something or someone has done or said something to hurt you, you’ve got to tell me. NOW! Phee!” I jumped at his outburst.
“See? I can only image what you’d do if you knew. I won’t tell, just know I’m ok and I love you more than anything. I need you to be the best Beta to the pack and I’ll be back sooner than you think and then I’ll tell you everything. Promise.”
His face dropped and I hated to see him so deflated, so I ran up and hugged him tightly. “I love you bubba and you couldn’t get rid of me, even if you wanted to.” I heard him take a shuddering breath and hold me even tighter. He sniffled and I knew he had tears falling. I didn’t move, just let us have this moment, and I found my tears mingled with his.
I spent the next two days with my parents, Sonya and Lance, while my paperwork was accepted. On the third day, I was packed and ready to go. No one else knew I was going, not even the alpha and especially not his son. I wanted a clean break and didn’t want to answer any questions. The taxi came and my parents, Lance and Sonya hugged me with tears streaming down their faces. Daddy gave me some money and mama gave me some things to remember everyone by. I didn’t cry, I couldn’t. I waved goodbye and blew them kisses and got in the taxi. I turned to watch them out the back window and then turned around and collapsed in the seat, bawling my eyes out. My stomach had been cramping the whole time and I was definitely glad I was leaving that.
Chapter 2 As Gael released his seed on Amy’s stomach, he heard a commotion outside the packhouse. He got up and walked to the window and saw Phoenix get into a taxi with her family and her friend and they all looked like the world was coming to an end. He felt the hollowest feeling in his chest and couldn’t understand why it hurt so much. Watching the taxi drive away hurt him to his core. He had to bend over to keep from falling to the floor. “Gael, come back, I’m cold.” Amy whined and he almost threw up. “I’ve got work to do; I’m going to the shower.” “Want some company?” she said as she snaked her way over to him. he wasn’t feeling sexual right then. No, I’ve got a lot of work to do. Go and get yourself together in your room.” She looked at him as if he’d slapped her. “Sorry babe, how about you and the girls go and get mani-pedi’s?” he said as he handed her his credit card. She sque
Chapter 3Gael sat in his office running his hand through his hair. “How is this still happening? Rogues are continuing to breach my defenses and they’ve taken another she-wolf.” The frustration was building and the tension in the pack rising.“Gael we’ve tried different tactics on how to strengthen our border defenses and yet they still get in. What’s going to happen if they decide to attack?” Lance asked just as frustrated as Gael.During those six years, Gael was named Alpha and took Amy as his chosen mate. He didn’t want to but a few years after Phoenix left he started to have pains. They were excruciating. His wolf Ronan wouldn’t absorb the pain either, because he was still furious about losing his mate. Nobody knew about them, except Amy and the pack doctor, as he had to have powerful pain killers to function. He was heartbroken to think that Phoenix was sexually active and evidently the sex she was having was strong. He still refused to mark Amy and fill her with his seed. Hi
Chapter 4Lance and I practically raced to get to my parents’ house. As we ran up, my parents were running coming out, I smiled.“Oh, my baby!” my mama shouted running to me and crashing me against her. I sniffed her hair and familiar scent and immediately began fighting the tears that wanted to fall. She had her hands in my hair and was sobbing on my shoulder. A mother’s wail is a sound that goes right to your soul and my mama wailed.“Mama, I missed you,” and of course I cried like a baby. I felt strong arms surround us and I turned into those arms and cried so hard I shook. “Daddy, I missed you.” Lance came over to grab mom cause she wasn’t ready to let go. So here we were a sobbing mess on the front lawn. After that came all the questions, and I was ready for them all.“My Goddess what have you been doing? Are you eating? Are they treating you right? You’ve lost so much weight! You’re gorgeous baby.” My mama bombarded me with all that in one breath.“Yeah that’s what I said.” Lanc
Chapter 5My eyes opened on their own at 4:45 a.m. as they did every morning for the past six years. I rolled out of bed, went to the bathroom, did my business, brushed my teeth and hair and was out on the porch getting ready to stretch for a morning run. Like clockwork, Ron and Tina were coming for morning calisthenics. We stretched and did a full perimeter run. I ran in my human form. My wolf, Freya, was around but she never presented herself to me. She spoke to me in my head, but she never came forth to shift. I still had all the strength, speed, heightened vision and hearing that a wolf had, but my wolf didn’t ever seem to want to come forth. She’d say, “Not time yet.” Tina ran in wolf form and Ron ran with me in human form. We ran for about 30 minutes when I stopped. I took a deep breath in and then I recognized the smell, rogues. I mindlinked Ron and Tina, who instinctively fell back into a defensive position. I told them to climb the nearest tree so we could surveil the area. W
Chapter 6I remember the whole first year at the academy I couldn’t find my feet. Everything I did was wrong; I was getting beat up in every challenge. They would pick me first in events because they knew I was weak. I tried very hard to master the techniques they were teaching, but I just couldn’t get it. I was bullied. This got the attention of Commander Kyle. He sent for me asking if I really wanted to be there and did I really think it through about becoming one of the elite warriors there. That pissed me off because I always knew what I needed. Everything came to a head when the main bullies, a pair or twins, Saskia and Saxon called themselves taking me deep into the Phantom woods to die and what happened there changed my life forever.“Flashback”“You just need to toughen up, we’re really doing you a favor.” Saskia said as she held one of my arms in a vice.“You’re a soft little bitch and there’s no room for you in the Werewolf academy, especially when you haven’t even shifted
Chapter 7I walked up the porch to my parents’ house when I heard the most vicious howl in my life. I knew immediately who it was. I ran to the packhouse as fast as I could. It was Lance and he sounded like a combination of rage and sorrow. I rushed into the packhouse and there were three warriors trying their best to hold him back.“LaLa! What is going on? What’s wrong?”“I’m going to kill him; I’m going to kill her!” I ran up to him and held him around his waist, I felt him calm a little. “Who bubba, who?”“Let me go Phee, you didn’t tell me, WHY DIDN’T YOU TELL ME!” He was hysterical. I heard my mom and dad come in with our dad rushing over to hold LaLa back.“Tell you what LaLa?” I screamed at him and then it dawned on me. Oh shit, he found out Gael was my mate.“Son, son please calm down!” Now mama was holding him. My heart was breaking. He was hurting and it was for me. I went to stand outside on the porch of the packhouse when I saw Gael running up. All I could think of was to
Chapter 8When we reached the bottom floor, this dungeon didn’t smell like most. There was always the smell of blood, vomit and emptied bowels where the prisoners were tortured for information; but this dungeon was like club freaking Med. I looked at Tina and Ron and we just shook our heads, it actually smelled like air fresheners and cleaning products. I rubbed my temples and mindlinked the team, “This is some bullshit. I could vacation here.” I said shaking my head. The guards down there were playing cards, not at attention and not even facing the cell she was in to monitor any movements. There was actually a fucking window in the cell, and it was cracked to let in fresh air. I was through. I took mental notes as I was going to tear him a new ass later. What kind of Tom foolery was this?“Justin, Toby, at ease. Open Amy’s cell we need to see her.” At ease?! Are you fucking kidding me!? They were at ease alright. They got up and opened the cell and we walked in, and Amy was sitting on
Chapter 9Gael returned to the packhouse not wanting to admit that he was sore all over. He’d worked out all of his life, but he’s never been this sore from a ten-minute workout with Phoenix. He kept reminiscing how she moved with such grace and poise. She even had her eyes closed the whole time. When Randall stepped up to help him throw her off, the way she ran into him and knocked him on his ass was astounding. As he was almost at his office, he heard noises coming from inside. He stopped and instantly anger filled him. Who had the audacity to be in the Alpha’s office without permission? As he felt his wolf about to surface he opened the door, that was slightly ajar, and what he saw almost made him pass out.His father had his mother bent over his desk giving her the absolute business. Her face was concentrated in ecstasy and his father looked as if his life depended on ramming her as hard as he could. Gael couldn’t speak he just heaved, slammed the door and sprinted down the hall.
Chapter 39It happened so quickly, every warrior in the room was startled.Alpha Walters wolf’s severed head blinked in surprise, not even aware that he was already on his way to the Moon Goddess.I went to stand at Freya’s flank and asked his warriors if this was really the way they wanted to go. At that question Freya turned around and crouched in position like she was ready to do more damage.Every warrior, other than my own, gave the pose of submission, on their knees with their fists over their hearts.“We will serve and pledge allegiance to Alpha Ryker!” They said in unison.I turned to Walters beta, who did not kneel in submission. “So I guess it falls to you to give us the answers we need.”Beta Timmerson smirked. “You know I can’t do that, Alpha.” He said with a smug look on his face.“Okay then, I guess I’ll have to have Phoenix and Freya bring you around. Darling?”Freya morphed instantaneously into Phoenix, and I immediately got super pissed as my mate was naked in front o
Chapter 38I threw the bunker door open and went in and grabbed the nearest warrior and ripped his head off.The screams from the women and stunned looks from the men made me smirk as I grabbed the next man and twisted his head making a gut-wrenching sound as every bone in his neck was broken. The warriors finally came out of the fog they were in and started to get up and come toward me to fight.Just what I wanted. The woman who I told to run, came back and was screaming for all the women to move. Thankfully, they came to their senses and started to get up and get out. Even better. The men were making a beeline toward me with a very large warrior pushing his way forward. The others stopped and let him through. I’d already made my assessment with the men in here and knew it was only a matter of time. I stood and waited for him to move closer before me. I did a dramatic huge sigh.“Well it seems I’ll have to tell you what’s going on, so you definitely won’t be able to say that I de
Chapter 37After that moment with Tolina I was even more concerned about the last thing she said. I was going to lose someone dear to me? That could be anyone. My parents, Lala, Sophia, Sonya, Ron, Kyle, Tina or even Gael.I went off to calm myself and meditated so hard that when I was ready I mindlinked Gael and told him that I was leaving for the camp. I needed Freya to run and me just ride it out.He mindlinked back that I better not leave him and to wait for him, and he meant that shit, but I couldn’t do what he asked. I needed to be wild and set things in motion on my own.I told him that this is part of the process of me preparing myself for a mission. He understood and gently asked me not to engage until we were all assembled. I agreed and was already halfway there when we ended the link.“I can feel the charms and spells all around us.” Freya said sniffing the air.“I feel something too, but I’m trusting that nose of yours. What should we do?”I could see the smirk on Freya fa
Chapter 36Two and a half hours later, everyone was assembled in Gael’s office. They had the plan worked out.Gael had sent scouts out there to gather intel before they assembled and executed the plan. When the scouts arrived, the information they had was crucial to victory. They informed the Alpha that there were at least four to five hundred warriors present. They said that Alpha Walters was indeed there and there were about close to 200 she-wolves in captivity, with a large number of them pregnant, but then some of them were malnourished and near death.Gael then called for Doc Simmons and informed him that he would be accompanying them, but outside of where the action was and for him to get his medical team together as they would be leaving late in the evening. The scouts also said they saw the witch, but she had also cast charms around the perimeter so that they would be alerted if anyone or anything would cross their border.Gael mindlinked Phoenix to call for Tolina. He wasn’t r
Chapter 35As they approached the packhouse, the omega’s bowed as they held the door open for these massive beasts. Two omega’s held the doors open to the Alpha’s suite and quickly exited when both wolves were inside. An Alpha wolf is very protective of his Luna and pups and if you linger to long they may see it as a threat. So once the door was closed Freya went to the floor and began to shift back. Ronan stayed, watchful to make sure Phoenix was alright.Phoenix woke on the floor with Ronan licking her face. “Mmmm, hi Ronan, did you have a good time last night?” she smirked as she sat up.He answered by lying next to her with his paws surrounding her body. She leaned into his massive chest and stroked his ears. He purred.“Thank you for always taking care of us, loving us. I’ll always be devoted and love you with all my heart and soul.” He leaned over her and rubbed her face.“You and Freya are my reason for being. I’ll always choose you both.”“Ronan, give me my Luna back please.”
Chapter 34They walked hand in hand with a picnic basket that had extra clothes and food in in. They didn’t know how long Ronan and Freya would be at it, so they wanted to be prepared. In the deepest part of the forest, they stopped and kissed each other. Both of them still mesmerized with the fact that they were blessed with each other. Phoenix started to undress with Gael staring at her with love and adoration in his eyes. He followed her lead and in no time they were both naked under the moonlight.“I’ve never shifted before Gael; I don’t know what is going to happen. I know it can be painful, and I’m okay with that, but I’ve heard it’s better when your mate is there.”“Yes my love, having your mate near helps tremendously; so I’ve heard. You ready?”“Yes.”Freya spoke to Phoenix. “Alright girlie, I’m ready and trust me okay? It’s isn’t going to be as bad as you think. I need you to relax and let go. If you fight me, it will be painful, do you understand?”“I do, and I trust you wi
Chapter 33This time Gael came and held me tightly. I don’t know if it was for him or for me. I held him back, but I couldn’t seem to cry about it.What started my tears was the little boy, Franklin. He went through years of therapy and treatment and finally when his wolf presented himself, he was able to heal in ways that made my heart happy.I’d kept up with him for years, I’d even met with him after he insisted on speaking to the one who saved him that night.I wasn’t sure I’d be able to, but I did. He thanked me and told me he wanted to attend the Werewolf Academy like I did and become a top-notch warrior like me so he could help those out there in need.I made sure he was accepted.I never thanked the Moon Goddess more for the crap I went through, because it brought me to Franklin.“I’d like to meet Franklin one day too babe.”…..What the fuck?“How did you know what I thought?”“I don’t really know; all I know is that you started speaking about it and I assumed you were mindlinki
Chapter 32We stood there stunned at this beautiful woman with white hair and a kind smile. Gael immediately tensed up knowing she was a witch.“Trust me, I mean you no harm.” She raised her hands in the air.“Yeah right, isn’t that exactly what a witch would say? How did you enter my territory, witch?”“No need to be rude Alpha Gael. If I wanted to attack you, I could’ve done it years ago, but I knew we would end up right here. Now I have vital information; do you want to know it or not?” She cut him a look with her hand on her hip and I knew she was legit.“Sorry about him, Miss……?” I asked her holding Gael’s hand tighter hoping to relay to him to hush and listen.“Tolina, Phoenix and I know everything about you, and if you’ll give me a minute of your time I can explain it to you.”“Okay. Let’s head to the packhouse.” Gael screamed in my head. “NO! I won’t allow her in the packhouse because there are innocents in there. I won’t have it!”Tolina then said, “Fine Alpha Gael we can sit
Chapter 31She found some righteous indignation in her as she tried to sit up and vehemently deny that Gael was with me every night. So much so, her signature nastiness came through and the snarl on her face reminded me that the real Amy was always just below the surface.“How does it feel Phoenix to know I had your man first? That I let him do whatever he wanted to me, whenever he wanted, and he screamed my name in ecstasy EVERY time we fucked and believe me it was all the time. You are just a second choice, and you will never get what I had, you’ll always be my sloppy seconds.” She laid back down against her pillow satisfied with herself. I shook my head.“It never occurred to me just how pathetic you are until just now Amy.You have the audacity to feel victorious in taking someone else’s mate while having your own, but let’s see just how this really turned out.Yes you fucked my mate for years, BUT you had to drug him all the time; and yet, he never marked you or came inside of yo
