Katherine
It was Monday morning, and it was a depressing sunny day.
I sighed as I approached the towering glass building of Kane Group. It has been three days, three days had passed since that humiliating disaster at the company's anniversary party, yet the whispers and never ending lingering stares still followed me like a shadow behind my back and it was annoying.
It was a nightmare a complete and total catastrophe for me.
Jayden’s name was on everyone’s lips, and not even for the right reasons and neither was mine. He had been utterly humiliated, and by extension, so had I. The thought made my blood boil. I was still furious mostly at that bitch named Emili. She stole my spotlight.
But I wouldn’t let them see me flinch.
Straightening my shoulders, I lifted my chin and stepped inside.
As expected, the moment I entered, all eyes turned to me. The air just starting buzzing with murmurs, hushed low whispers that weren’t even subtle at all. I could feel their judgment crawling over my skin like insects.
Pathetic. Every single one of them was pathetic.
I refused to acknowledge them, keeping my expression poised as I made my way toward the front desk of the building.
Lauren, the receptionist, was busy typing away, her eyes glued to her screen.
I cleared my throat. "Is my father in?"
She didn’t even look up. "Go to his office. If he’s in, you’ll see him there. If he’s not, then..." She shrugged, still typing.
I clenched my jaw. The audacity to speak to me in such manner, it was infuriating.
Lauren was just a lowly receptionist, beneath me in every possible way, and yet she dared to act indifferent? Did she forget who I was?
"You know," I said, lowering my voice to a threatening whisper, "I could have your job just like that."
That got her attention.
Lauren’s fingers paused for a fraction of a second before she finally looked at me. "My apologies, Miss Smith." Her voice was flat, unapologetic.
I scoffed but didn’t waste another second on her. Low lives like her weren’t worth my time.
I walked away, feeling their eyes follow me, but I didn’t care. They were all rats compared to where I stood.
This realization helped me push forward without letting their opinions affect me.
A Waste of My Precious Time
I reached my father’s office, but as expected, he wasn’t there. He never is
Instead, his secretary—slash-mistress—was inside, organizing his files like a dutiful pet.
I let out a short scoff. How cheap.
She looked exactly like the type of woman who whored herself out for money and power. Pathetic.
"Miss Smith," she greeted me with an overly bright smile, her eyes filled with hopeful excitement.
Disgusting. Always seeking validation from people who don’t even care about them, very desperate.
"Where’s my father?" I demanded, cutting straight to the point.
She visibly stiffened. "Uhm, he—he’s not in."
Her stutter irritated me a lot. Weak. Absolutely weak.
I rolled my eyes and turned on my heel, not bothering to acknowledge her further.
I made my way to my own office, sat at my desk, and flipped through some files.
Meeting after boring meeting passed.
Lunch came and went.
I ate alone, of course, since Jayden was too much of a coward to show his face. He had been hiding in his office for three days straight.
The very sight of him made me sick. How could he let this happen to us? How could he?
We were supposed to be powerful. Untouchable.
Yet now, we were the laughingstock of the company, and all he could do is sit behind his desk.
By late afternoon, I was done.
I shut my laptop with a snap and stood up.
This place had always been a fun killer, and after the disaster at the party, being here felt suffocating. I could barely breathe.
I needed a distraction. Something exciting.
Maybe I’d go shopping. Or to the spa. Anything to get away from this miserable company and the damn people in it.
As I adjusted my coat, preparing to leave, the usual whispers buzzed around me like flies.
I ignored them.
They were nobodies.
Beneath me.
Until—
A commotion outside stopped me in my tracks.
Loud voices.
Heavy footsteps.
Then—
Police sirens.
I froze, my grip tightening around my handbag.
Something was going on. Something bad.
I could feel it.
I turned on my heel and quickly made my way out of the cafeteria, following the sound of sirens and raised voices.
And deep in my gut, I knew—
This was going to change everything.
The moment I stepped outside, the bright flashing lights from the police cars nearly blinded me. A crowd had gathered near the entrance of the company, their faces filled with curiosity and judgment. My breath hitched as I caught sight of the scene unfolding before me.
There—right in the middle of it all—was my father.
Handcuffed.
Surrounded by officers.
Being escorted out like a common criminal.
For a moment, I couldn't move. My mind struggled to process what I was seeing. This wasn’t real. It couldn’t be real.
Then, panic took over.
I pushed through the crowd, my heels clicking against the pavement as I hurried toward him.
"Dad?" My voice came out desperate. "What’s going on?"
I tried to reach him, but an officer stepped in front of me, blocking my path.
"Get out of my way you moron!" I screamed at him.
"You need to stay back, Miss," he said firmly.
I glared at him. "That’s my father!"
My dad turned his head, his expression unreadable. His suit—always perfectly pressed—was slightly wrinkled, his usually sharp eyes filled with something I had never seen before. Worry.
"Katherine, go home," he said, his voice low but firm.
I shook my head. "No! Get out damn it! Tell me what’s happening! This is a mistake, right? It has to be!"
But before he could answer, one of the officers opened the back door of the police car and guided him inside.
I clenched my fists, my nails digging into my palms. This wasn’t happening. This couldn’t be happening.
The whispers around me grew much more louder than before.
"What the hell is going on?"
"Why is Mr. Smith being arrested?"
"Don't know, that family is very complicated"
"He’s probably involved in a scandal. That family is always up to no good. Pfft, you could only imagine."
That last comment hit a nerve.
My head snapped toward the direction of the voice.
A young woman—a nobody in this company—stood near the entrance, whispering to a colleague. She wasn’t even trying to be quiet about it.
Before I could stop myself, I marched straight up to her.
"What did you just say about my family?" I demanded.
She barely had time to react before my hand connected with her face.
The sound of the slap echoed through the air.
Her eyes widened in shock, her cheek turning red.
"You better watch your mouth or I'll cut it off." I threatened
I didn’t wait for a response. She wasn’t worth my time. None of them were
Without another word, I turned and walked straight out of the building, my heels clicking sharply against the marble floor.
I needed to get out of there.
Three days later…
The house felt empty.
Cold.
Lifeless.
Ever since my father’s arrest, I had been trying to reach him, to get anyone to tell me what was going on. But no one would let me see him. No one would tell me anything.
But I wasn’t stupid.
I had a pretty good idea of what was happening.
This had Emilia written all over it.
That stupid bitch.
Ever since she came into our lives, nothing had been the same. First, she humiliated Jayden and me.Then she married Richard. And now, she had somehow managed to ruin my family.
She was out for blood.
But she had messed with the wrong person.
I wasn’t going to sit back and watch her destroy everything.
I was going to confront her.
Without wasting another second, I grabbed my coat and stormed out of the house.
The moment I stepped into Kane Group, all eyes turned to me.
I could hear the whispers.
"Isn’t that Katherine Smith?"
"Did you hear about her father?"
"She still has the nerve to show up here?"
I ignored them. These people were beneath me.
I marched straight to Emilia’s office.
Empty.
I let out a frustrated breath.
Where the hell was she?
Then I realized there was only one other place she could be.
I turned on my heel and headed straight for Richard’s office.
And when I pushed the doors open—
There she was.
Sitting comfortably in his office.
Laughing.
Having a nice little chat with Richard.
Like nothing had happened.
Like she hadn’t just destroyed my family.
Rage burned through me.
She was going to regret this. I will definitely make sure of that
Katherine I stormed right into Richard’s office with fury and determination, my heels clicking furiously against the floor. My blood was seriously boiling with rage, and my hands clenched into fists. Emilia was seated across from Richard, her face was calm—way too calm—like she hadn’t just destroyed my family and it made me even more pissed off."You!" I spat, pointing a finger right at her. "You did this! You got my father arrested! Didn't you?"Emilia blinked twice, taken aback, but before she could even speak, Richard stood up defending her."Katherine, that is enough." His voice was cold, firm. But I wasn't going to let him intimidate me, he was in on it since she was his wife.I turned to him, my jaw tightening. "You’re defending her? After everything she’s done? Of course, you're defending her, you both conspired against him."Richard sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Your father’s arrest has nothing to do with Emilia. Would you just chill out, are you forgetting who yo
JaydenThe night air felt very cold and it was biting, even though it was still very early in the evening. I walked down the sidewalk on the left, hands shoved deep inside my jacket pockets, head down and I was lost in thought. The weight of the night before sat heavily on my chest. I had done it. I had thrown Katherine away like she was nothing, just another notch in the long list of women i hadused to feed my ego. She had been a stepping stone, a way to keep the image of the perfect life intact. But now? She was no longer of use to me. Now, everything was in shambles. My mind was a simply a jumbled mess, one thought crashing itself onto the next. I had dumped Katherine, fought off any trace of hesitation to end things, but why did it feel like one of the few wrong choices I had ever made? Part of me had expected a bit of relief, but instead, all I felt was an insatiable bitterness, gnawing away at me from the inside out.Katherine’s father had recently been arrested. It was a scanda
KatherineThe atmosphere around me felt really damp with silence in the aftermath of Jayden’s hurtful and bitter words. It was as if the whole world had frozen right around me, and all that remained was the bitter sting of raw rejection.I sat on the edge of the bed, my phone clutched very tightly in my hand. As my fingertips hovered over the screen, trembling ever slightly as I stared at Jayden's name. Why did it feel like I was holding onto a lifeline that was slipping away from me? Why?I dialed his number again and again,, for the hundredth time, hoping, praying that this time, he’d answer. But he just refused to.The call went straight into voicemail.I stared at the screen for a long moment before finally deciding to leave another message. The words came out even more shakier than I intended."Jayden, please… pick up. Pick up the bloody phone. I don’t understand. You can’t just walk away like this. You simply can't. Not after everything we’ve been through. Please, don’t do this
Emilia“What the hell is going on, Jayden?” I asked sharply.I couldn't believe my eyes, even after stepping in here.I could hardly believe it hours ago when Bae had called and told me that she'd spotted him entering what was a supposed celebration in a grand hotel at the other end of the city when he'd claimed to have travelled for work. Despite my doubts I had come here abd she was right. The company he worked for, Kane Group was having a company wide gala and he hadn't told me.But that wasn't the worst part. No. Because as I had rushed in her I saw him.Jayden, my boyfriend of six years, wrapped around so comfortably with another woman.I felt the urge to vomit. Now, pulled away from the crowd he remained unresponsive, not even flinching from my question, instead his brown eyes narrowed and a hint of annoyance became evident. He looked at me as if I didn’t belong here in the first place. Like I didn't have the right to ask why on earth he was at a company party he told me absolut
EmiliaI wasn't alone. My heart skipped a beat as I noticed the warmth and the faint sound of breathing that wasn't me. Panic surged through me as I whipped my head to my side to find an equally naked man beside me.Dark, messy hair covered the top half of his features and sharp, angular features that made him look like he had stepped out of a magazine.‘Snap out of it Emilia,’ I mentally slapped myself blinking back to reality. There were too many questions in my head. I tried to recall the entire day, but the last thing I remembered was talking to Jayden and then moving to the bar. Everything else was so…fuzzy after.Had I …spoken to someone?Frustration built up in me. I didn't know what the hell happened after and that was the key to understanding this. It definitely couldn't have been the alcohol considering my tolerance and that meant someone had done something to me. Like drugging me.And now I was naked with a man I'd never met.I was so lost in my thoughts that the moment I f
ONE MONTH LATERRichardI’d re-watched the footage so many times that I knew every detail, yet in the silence of my office I clicked the mouse once more. The hotel footage from a month ago replayed itself. In the dim lighting of the hallway, a dark grainy figure stumbled and swayed while still rushing in what looked like panic as she used the wall to balance herself. Then after a short pause she found the door that led to my hotel room.I paused right at the moment before she stumbled inside, into what was my hotel room. My gaze traced her figure, immortalized in that single frame.A mix of frustration and longing ignited within me.It's been a month since that night, and yet, no matter how much I analyzed the footage, I couldn’t look away. This wasn’t how I expected things to happen. I was very detailed about my life, careful with every move I made. And yet, in just a single night, everything had spiraled out of control because someone had dared to drug me.And then there was her.Al
EmiliaSomething was wrong. It was jarring. Things weren't supposed to be this way and for the most part, it was.Freedom felt good . It had been a month since Jayden's breakup with me and I had been thriving. I'd realized it after taking on the first five jobs within only two days of re-entering the job market. All this time, albeit unconsciously, I had been subduing herself. It all started years ago because of what Jayden used to tell me. I had graduated with better honors and opportunities than him but because of his insecurity, I took low level jobs to not make him feel bad and kept supporting him. Now I realized what a stupid mistake I'd made. In pushing myself down he had thought I was lower than him.Without Jayden dragging me down, I’d made waves in my freelance career. Jobs surprisingly kept piling up and for the first time in years, I felt like I was actually progressing. I was happier than ever in life.Until the symptoms started. At first it was just simple exhaustion and
EmiliaIt wasn’t a question.I couldn't answer him, but my silence was enough of an answer. He continued looking at me and his stare grew more unnerving. Shutting my eyes I came back to my senses.“It's none of your business. Y-you shouldn't have barged into my home. Leave now,” I snapped, trying to pull him away despite my racing heart. He didn't budge. Instead his sharp gaze lingered on me.“It is my business. It’s our child, after all,” he said, freezing me in place.I held back the urge to flinch at his words. Unable to pull him away I took several steps back. How was he so calm about this? Mentioning my pregnancy so calmly. I didn't even know him!“What are you doing here?’ I huffed, trying to regain my composure, “How on earth is Richard Kane in my house?”“So you do know who I am.”A wave of embarrassment rose to my cheeks as his lips curled into a smirk. Nevermind that if you only found out recently.A sigh left his lips.“And to think that I came here for something else. You'

Emilia The air was still thick with tension from Richard’s announcement. I could feel the weight of a hundred eyes on us, watching, whispering, speculating. But none of it mattered—not when Richard stood beside me, his hand resting protectively on my waist, his presence a shield against the storm. The music had resumed, a slow, elegant tune filling the grand ballroom. The murmur of conversation was back, but there was an undeniable shift in the atmosphere.Richard had claimed me in front of everyone. And now, the world saw me not just as Emilia, the once-forgotten fiancée of Jayden Turner, but as his wife. And the mother of his child.I wasn’t sure how to feel about it. My heart was still racing from the kiss he had given me earlier—possessive, deliberate, leaving no room for doubt about where we stood. Even now, my lips still tingled from the warmth of his touch, the sensation lingering like an unspoken promise.I turned to look at him, expecting him to be scanning the room like he a
Jayden The murmurs hadn’t stopped. Even as the orchestra resumed its melody and guests returned to their conversations, the energy in the room had shifted.Richard Kane’s announcement had stolen the night.I stood frozen in the middle of the ballroom, my mind racing. Emilia was his wife. She was pregnant with his child. And he had just kissed her in front of everyone, making a clear and public declaration. And the worst part?No one was talking about my engagement to Katherine anymore. The moment that was supposed to cement our status, the carefully planned announcement meant to elevate our position in the company, had been utterly overshadowed. Instead of congratulating me and Katherine, guests whispered amongst themselves about Emilia and Richard.Katherine was fuming beside me, gripping her champagne glass so tightly I thought it might crack. Her lips were pulled into a tight line, and her usual poised demeanor had faltered. “This is ridiculous,” she hissed, keeping her voice low.
JaydenThe ballroom gleamed with opulence, the golden chandeliers casting a warm, regal glow over the sea of sharply dressed guests. Crystal glasses clinked, and the soft hum of polite conversation filled the space. Waiters moved effortlessly between groups, offering expensive champagne and exquisite hors d’oeuvres. The Kane Group’s anniversary gala was more than just a celebration. It was a statement—a display of power, wealth, and influence. A night where the elite of the business world gathered to reaffirm their positions at the top. And tonight, Katherine and I were about to take center stage.I adjusted the cuffs of my tailored black suit, exhaling slowly as I scanned the room. Business moguls, investors, CEOs—all the right people were here. People who understood the value of strategic alliances. People who would recognize what my engagement to Katherine truly meant.. Beside me, Katherine radiated confidence. Her deep red gown hugged her curves, the color bold and deliberate—a q
Richard. The air inside Kane Group buzzed with the usual morning energy—keyboards clacking, phones ringing, employees chatting in hushed voices. But as I strode through the lobby, a different kind of chatter reached my ears.“…can’t believe she’s still here.”“I know, right? She’s acting like she actually belongs in that position.”I didn’t slow my pace, but my jaw clenched slightly. They hadn’t even noticed me approaching.“She probably thinks if she sticks around long enough, Richard Kane will put a ring on her finger.”A round of snickering followed.I stopped beside them, fixing my gaze on the group of employees huddled near the reception area. The moment they realized I was there, their faces drained of color. One of the men—a junior associate from the marketing department—stiffened, his laughter dying instantly. The others quickly averted their gazes, pretending to be suddenly fascinated by their phones or the floor. One of them, a young man I vaguely recognized, cleared his thr
EmiliaThe weight of their stares never lessened. It clung to me like a heavy fog, thick with judgment and barely concealed contempt. No matter where I went in the office, I could feel their eyes trailing me, their hushed whispers punctuated by barely hidden sneers.I wasn’t naïve. I knew what they were thinking. She doesn’t deserve this position. She must have slept her way to the top.Richard Kane must have a special taste for desperate women. The words weren’t spoken directly to me, but they didn’t have to be. The looks were enough.Despite the suffocating tension in the air, I held my head high and walked with purpose. If I let them see even a fraction of doubt or hesitation, they would pounce. These people thrived on weakness, and I refused to give them the satisfaction of watching me crumble. But that didn’t mean their whispers didn’t sting.I clenched my fists as I neared the reception desk, forcing my shoulders to remain straight. If I wanted to command respect, I had to act l
