HAZEL
The half hour I'd spent sitting in the grassy part of the woods felt like an eternity. The silence, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of birds, was starting to get to me. I was waiting for them to return from their little hunting but as the minutes ticked by, a sense of unease began to creep in.
Suddenly, a low rustle sounded from behind me, startling me out of my fearful thoughts. My heart pounded as I slowly turned my head around, my eyes scanning the line of trees. The noise seemed to have come from somewhere deep within the woods, but I couldn't pinpoint the exact source.
A chill ran down my spine as I tightened my grip on the tennis racket I had brought with me. It was a simple weapon, but it was all I had to defend myself with. I tried to calm my racing thoughts, reminding myself that it was probably just an animal. But the more I thought about it, the less convinced I became.
Suddenly, a large, black wolf appeared in the dim light. It was carrying a bloody chunk of meat. As the wolf got closer, I realised it was Sparrow's. He stopped right in front of me and dropped a dead rabbit at my feet. I let out a sigh of relief, thankful for his timely arrival.
Although I was a bit startled by his sudden action, he kept gazing from the meat and back to me.
I managed to offer him a kind smile. "Uh, thank you for the... rabbit," I stammered, gently patting his furry wolf forehead in appreciation.
He offered me a playful grin, his head tilted to the side, and I couldn't help but chuckle. Leaning in, I scratched behind his ears, and he let out a contented sigh.
Just then, a deep growl shattered the peaceful moment. Sparrow's ears perked up, and he turned to face the sound. I followed his gaze and saw the large wolf, a familiar sight, trotting towards us with a massive chunk of meat clenched in its jaws.
Sparrow took a few steps back, then turned and left slowly. Thaddeus wolf moved closer to me, his eyes watchful. He placed the elk meat on the ground in front of me as well and then retreated a short distance, keeping his eyes on me.
"Oh my goodness, that's a whole lot of meat!" I exclaimed, my eyes widening as I took in the sight of the bloody, raw flesh.
“Fantastic work, Thaddeus," I praised, my voice filled with genuine admiration. Unsure of the appropriateness to show him how proud I was___ I didn't want to pat his wolf on the head.
So,
I opted for a gentle gesture. Cupping his furry head in my hands, I planted a soft kiss on the side of his muzzle, thankfully free from any blood. His wolf form seemed momentarily startled by my action, its eyes widening in surprise. It tilted its head, a curious expression evident on its lupine face.
My eyes widened in disbelief. Even though Thaddeus Wolf was out, it was clear he still had control over the situation. It was as if he was a puppet master, pulling the strings from the shadows.
And I had just kissed him.
Thaddeus backed away slowly and shifted back into his human form. My cheeks flushed as he continued to stare at me in surprise and another emotion that I just couldn't place. I fervently hoped that he wouldn't misinterpret my simple, appreciative kiss as something more. A small smirk played on his lips as he turned to dress himself.
It was a good thing my wolf was recovering. She would have thrown a huge fit about what had been happening. I stared at him to notice how his muscles forced out as he put his shirt over his head and Fuck, I just couldn't look away.
His muscles rippled and flexed with every movement, a mesmerising dance of hotness and sexiness that was truly breathtaking.
I was just never one to pay attention to other males when they walk around naked, but Thaddeus was a completely different story.
"Hey, knock it off, you need to stop staring already." Thaddeus grumbled, his fingers raking through his hair. My gaze, which had been fixed on him, snapped away, settling on the lifeless elk and rabbit carcasses strewn across the floor.
“Why did Sparrow bring you the rabbit? Did you ask him to?”
My eyes snapped back up at Thaddeus, who turned around and was now leaning against the tree.
"No, he's a really nice guy. He's being considerate by thinking of me, even though I didn't specifically ask him to. It's just his way of being kind."
Thaddeus grumbled, his eyes narrowing into a scowl as he watched the rabbit. "You shouldn't be so easily fooled," he muttered, his voice laced with irritation. "I've known Sparrow for ages. He's a smooth talker, always trying to charm and flirt with anyone who'll listen, especially things that don't have balls in between their legs.”
He glanced over at Sparrow, who was surrounded by a group of warriors, his words flowing effortlessly. Thaddeus rolled his eyes and scoffed.
“Wait, are you trying to say he flirts with you?” The word left my mouth before I could even stop them from.
Thea's laughter, a sound like a muffled explosion, burst from behind me. When I turned, I found his eyes sparkling with amusement as he watched our little scene unfold.
Thaddeus crept towards me, his footsteps silent as shadows. His eyes, dark and intense, bore into mine. I felt a chill run down my spine, a premonition of the storm brewing within him.
"You'll regret those words," he hissed, his voice barely a whisper. His breath, hot and rancid, brushed against my ear. I could feel the menace in his touch, a tangible threat that hung in the air.
My heart nearly skipped a beat at his insinuation. A shiver ran through me, not from the cold, but from the fear that coiled within his words. I knew then that this was no idle threat. Thaddeus was a man capable of great cruelty, a man who would stop at nothing to exact revenge.
His breath, warm and minty, fanned against my ear as his lips grazed my skin. My entire body was burning nicely, a pleasant surprise against the cool night air. My heart pounded in my chest, a frantic drumbeat echoing in my ears. I could feel the heat radiating from his body, a tangible warmth seeping through his shirt and warming my skin. Goosebumps erupted along my arms, a traitorous response to the gentle touch.
The moment he left, a chill settled over me. I shivered, not from the cold, but from the intensity of his gaze. Thea's whistle cut through the silence. "Wow, that was intense," he murmured. "I've never seen Thaddeus look so... hungry. Like he wanted to devour you whole.”
Thea’s word made me pause. Was that what the look on his face was? It didn't really seem like it though. He just looked irritated to me.
“Okay, okay, we can fantasise about Thaddeus later. But for now, let's keep our eyes on the prize: delicious grilled meat! Sparrow might be a bit of a flirt, but I think he's just being nothing close to a jerk right now...”
I sighed and picked up the meat carefully with Thea helping out.
I was probably overthinking everything. Thaddeus wouldn't change that quickly.
He would always be an arrogant possessive jerk. It was a fact, an unchangeable truth.
HAZELThe next hour and a half flew by in a whirlwind of activity. Everyone was simultaneously sitting, cutting, cooking, and eating, all in an effort to finish early and get a good night's sleep. Sparrow had warned us that we needed to start at three in the morning to make up for any potential delays.By the time it was completely dark and the stars were out, the pack warriors on duty were circling the small camp and everyone else was either spreading there blanket to sleep or already fast asleep. I snuggled deeper into the thin throw, Thea's gift, but it offered little warmth against the biting cold. The chill seeped through the blanket, sending shivers down my spine. I tried to pull the blanket tighter, but it was like trying to hold onto a wisp of smoke. The cold air seemed to find every crevice, every exposed inch of my skin. I couldn't believe how much colder it had gotten. My head snapped up, curious to see how everyone else was doing. They all looked so cosy and warm, wrapped

"Your pack members," I mused, "they really need to get out more often. A little fresh air and sunshine wouldn't hurt.”“Why, what makes you say that?" Sparrow asked, his face creased with curiosity.“Alright, I told them that Thaddeus went to go beat down his meat and they had the weirdest looks on their faces.”Suddenly, Thea bursted out into laughter, his laughter echoing in the air and Sparrow just stared at me weirdly. “You told the pack warriors that Thaddeus' was… beating his meat down?” Sparrow asked, staring a

HAZELTHE DAY OF THE MATING BALLSparkling heels.Freshly brushed hair. Just an hour ago, I'd been a shadow of myself. The woman who had stared back at me in the mirror was a stranger - lost, vulnerable, and achingly innocent. There was a purity about her, a kind of innocence that was far removed from the marital bliss I’d once known. All that was missing tonight was the veil. The gauzy piece of flimsy bullshit that was meant to hide my face.Energy hums through the air, causing the hairs along my arms to stand on end. ‘Fuck, deep breath, Hazel,’ I mutter to myself, trying hard to calm my nerves. ‘And whatever you do, don't fucking look up.’Today marked the beginning of the wolf mating season. This annual event, typically occurring in late winter or early spring, is essential for the survival and growth of our wolf packs. By timing their reproduction with the availability of abundant food resources and favourable weather conditions, wolves increase the chances of their pups thriving

And my father… has a dark look and is glowering at my cowering mother. “I…I…” she stuttered, her skin as pale as a snow “I didn't know… I…” she kept stammering."What the hell, Russell?" My father roared, his voice a thunderclap of anger I'd never heard before. "How could you not know she's...well, a goddamn Mongrel. You should have known!" His finger jabbed towards me, a muscle twitching in his jaw.“I thought she was yours from the start,” my mother softly whispered. “I… you have to believe me. It… he found me… I tried to fight him… but I.. “Her statements are all jumbled up. Maybe because I can't hear behind the pounding in my ears. HAZELI had always taken the Silver moon pack as my home but they had never accepted me. That's why my mother always lectures me on when to display my backbone. Other girls didn't need that lesson, but I did. Because I have always been stronger. The rules we're expected to follow within our pack have always seemed unjust and out of touch. They're a constant source of frustration for me, as I believe there must be a more equitable and compassionate way to live together. While all other females merely accepted them as law.I thought that was what made me an Alpha female. But my wolf tells me now that it's never been about my inquisitive spirit. I have questioned everything all my life because I don't belong here. The entire wolves start to chant, causing the fur along my back to stand on end. HAZELThaddeus kept his steady pace, an unusual sight after four hours of carrying me. I wasn't sure if I should comment on his surprising stamina or just wait for a bathroom break, which seemed imminent judging by Thea's expression. As if he read my thoughts, Thea looked at Thaddeus and shook his head."I need to step away for a moment," he explained, his voice low. "Just a quick break.”Thaddeus sighed and called for a break loudly. Thea and a few other warriors from the group decided to step away from the main trail to find a private spot to relieve themselves. Seeing this as an opportunity, I leaned in closer to Thaddeus and whispered, "Hey, I think it's time you put me down. You've carried me for four long hours now. Your back must be aching terribly.” "No," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper. "You'll just slow us down. HAZELBefore I could respond to Sparrow's accusing question, Thaddeus's father showed up with another man. They had sent Sparrow off on an urgent errand, so we agreed to continue our conversation later.Thaddeus's dad stared at Farrow, his eyes wide with disbelief. He glanced at the strange creature on the floor, then back at Farrow. "You've got to be joking, Farrow," he said, his voice thick with disbelief. "We all know we haven't seen a rogue like this in ages. It's just… it's not possible.”"The stench of these scoundrels is unmistakable," Farrow growled, his eyes fixed on the fallen rogues. "Even in my old age, I'd recognize their foul odor anywhere. They are the most despised breed of villains, and I will never forget the mark they leave.”I stood there, utterly bewildered, as the conversation unfolded. I'd never laid eyes on a rogue, never smelled their supposed stench. All I knew was what others described, vague notions and fearful whispers. With a growing sense of unease, I ed
THADDEUSI couldn't believe what was happening. This was the third time we'd argued, and it all started over those rodent creatures. While I was still fuming, my wolf was in a completely different mood. He couldn't stop gushing about how adorable Hazel looked, comparing her to a cute little angry puppy. I rolled my eyes at his silly thoughts. She was cute, I would admit, but that wasn't important right now. We had more pressing issues to deal with. 'Would you stop? We have to deal with more serious and pressing issues right now and her cuteness isn't supposed to be one of them.'He froze and shook his fur out as the seriousness of the situation hit him once again. I was lucky that my wolf knew when to stop acting like a pup and start acting like an Alpha. I took his silence as a good-to-go signal and headed towards the dungeon where my father was dealing with the dead rogues."Father," I called out, my voice echoing softly in the dim, stone corridor. HAZEL Noah, with his piercing blue eyes and a mischievous glint, stood there, a contrast to the sombre wolves of the Shadow Moon Pack. I couldn't fathom how he had ended up in their midst. Or was there something more to his story, a secret yet to be revealed?Noah's face lit up like a thousand suns. His big, furry body pressed against my back, and I could feel the vibrations of his growl through my shirt. It was like a tiny earthquake."I really wasn't looking forward to this, I thought I had escaped you, what do you want now?” I scoffed, crossing my arms defiantly. HAZELThe steam from my tea curled upwards, mirroring the sigh that escaped my lips. I took a long, slow sip, savoring the warmth that spread through me. Only then did I find the strength to speak. “I honestly do not know, my mother had always said I had this gift. This gift only works on werewolves only. You see, several years ago, my grandmother decided to perform a ceremony in honour of the Moon Goddess.”“The kind of one where they make ceremonial fires and chant old scriptures?” Sparrow asked in surprise. As easy as it sounded, the ceremony was very elaborate and had to be perfect. From what my parents told me if something went wrong during the ceremony, the moon goddess would punish the entire pack. It was why several wolves were hesitant to perform such ceremony, but my grandmother wanted to take this risk. “They hit jackpot with that because the moon goddess was very pleased with their effort so she decided to bless them. She told them that the first child inside my mother's
