Xander's POV

I'm in a meeting with the heads of one of our partner companies when I start receiving the calls from Allison's friend. I didn't pick them at first, because I'm in a meeting, and also because it's an unfamiliar number. But she keeps calling relentlessly, so I pick up out of curiosity. She sounds worried and frightened, which should have warned me, but I'm still not prepared for the news when I hear it.

"Allison is in the hospital," she chokes out through sobs. "She was caught up in a car crash on her way to the competition…" she hiccups. "I d-don't know why she was going there alone…"

I don't wait to hear anything else. I'm up and heading for the exit before I remember that I was in a meeting. I pause at the door long enough to say "this meeting is adjourned".

Without waiting for a response, I hurry out of the building.

"Which hospital?" I say into the phone.

"Hands of Light," she replies.

"Are you with her right now?"

"As close as I can be," she replies, sounding miserable. "The doctors aren't letting visitors in. They need someone to sign the documents authorizing them to operate, but they won't let me sign it because I'm not her sibling or her spouse, or f-family, you know? I don't know what to do, Allison doesn't have any family left. What am I going to… I—"

"I'll be right there," I say. "If you learn anything else, make sure you tell me."

"Of course, Mr. Black," she replies.

I hang up and turn my attention to driving to the hospital. On a regular day, I would obey traffic rules and road signs and all of that, no matter what.

Not today.

I drive faster than I ever have, cutting through traffic with enough speed to make other cars flee from mine, and dodging vehicles. My heart has never beat this fast, and I can't remember the last time I panicked like this. Allison is all I can think about, and I know I won't be able to breathe properly until she's out of danger.

As I get closer to the hospital, I steer the car with one hand while calling my doctor with the other. He picks on the first ring.

"Good morning, Mr. Black," he says.

"Meet me at Hands of Light hospital in the next thirty minutes," is all I say.

"Understood, Sir."

I hang up just as I arrive at the hospital, and I see Allison's friend immediately I approach the building. She's pacing in front of it, wringing her hands. As I get closer, she turns to look at me with tears in her swollen, bloodshot eyes.

"Where is she?" I ask.

She wipes her eyes and gestures for me to follow her.

"This way," she says.

I follow her into the building, and she half-runs through spotless halls until she brings us to the casualties wing. Only when we are at a certain closed door does she stop, wringing her hands as she turns back to look at me.

"This is as far as I'm allowed to go," she says. "But I'm sure they would let you—"

I'm already opening the door and walking into the room. The nurses and doctors turn to me, startled, but I don't even spare them a glance. All I can see is Allison, lying unconscious on a bed with her hair fanning out around her pale face. There are tubes connected to her body, pumping blood into her, and a life support machine beeps at her side. There are bandages wrapped around her forehead, and her lips are parted ever so slightly.

She looks so fragile I can't bring myself to touch her.

"Mr. Black…" a doctor begins hesitantly.

"How is she?" I cut in.

She hesitates before answering.

"She had a concussion, and she has lost a lot of blood, but what's keeping her from waking up is a fracture in her skull. We're keeping her condition stable, but without surgery, there's no guarantee that she'll wake up."

"We've determined that her car was hit from behind by a semi-truck," a nurse adds. "The force threw her towards the dashboard, and her airbag failed to deploy, so the collision resulted in a fracture in the frontal part of her skull."

I don't want to hear any more.

"Perform the surgery," I say.

Instead of swinging into action immediately, they waste precious time staring at me in shock, so I turn to the doctor that seems to be in charge.

"Did you hear me?" I say. "Perform the surgery right now. I'll sign the documents."

"Mr. Black," she says, regaining her composure, "I don't want to disobey my Alpha, but this is about Miss Carter's life.

This sort of surgery comes with risks, both to her physical and mental health. The only people who have the right to make that decision on her behalf are her family—"

"I am her fiance," I say.

The doctor abandons her composure to stare in shock at me. Her colleagues' eyes are popping out of their heads as well.

"I am Allison Carter's fiance," I repeat. "That's the closest thing to a spouse that you can find right now, isn't it?"

"Yes, but—"

"Are you going to stand there and watch your Alpha's fiancee die, doctor?" I ask, keeping my voice dangerously low.

She gulps, her face paling with fear.

"I'm sorry, Alpha," she says immediately.

"You will save Allison's life, and you will not tell a soul outside of this room what was said here. Do you understand that, doctor?"

She nods way too fast, already gathering the needed implements. I turn away and go to Allison's side. For a moment, I can only stare down at her. It's painful to see her like this, pale and silent when I'm so used to her being bright and dazzling.

I know the medical personnel in the room are watching, but that doesn't stop me from leaning down and pressing a kiss to her forehead. I take her hand briefly, gently caressing her fingers, before I let go and straighten up.

If the doctors and nurses were gaping before, their jaws have completely relocated to the floor now. I turn to them, ignoring their stunned reactions.

"You're going to save her," I say, "or there will seize to be a hospital on this spot."

They all look shell-shocked, so only the head doctor answers.

"Understood, Alpha," she says in a low voice, keeping her gaze on the floor.

They scramble to get out of my way as I head to the door and out of the room.

The person I was earlier this morning would be freaking out about announcing to a room full of people that Allison is my fiancee, but now I realize how much of a fool that version of me is.

How can I still worry about useless things like reputation and the outrage of the pack, when Allison came this close to dying?

Allison's POVOn a typical work day, I am usually awakened by the gentle stirrings of my alarm clock, but today, I am woken by the intrusive wail of my phone's ringtone. With a grunt, I toss around on the bed, gripping my pillow and burying my face into it. But the ringing of my phone does not stop. Instead, it continues to ring continuously and I mutter a cuss under my breath before blindly stretching my hand to my bedside table and reaching for my phone. I almost drop the phone but the gods are merciful and I successfully grip the phone with my hand. Grumbling, I fumble with the phone and bring it to my ear with another irritable curse. The high-pitched voice of my best friend, Elsa, erupts into my ear, nearly causing me to drop the phone a second time.“Where the fuck are you, Allison Carter?!” “Where else am I supposed to be?” I answer, my voice gruff and scratchy from sleep. My eyelids remain closed, still heavy with drowsiness as I lean into my pillow. “I am in my apartment of

Allison's POVIt is closing hours after work and I am standing at the lobby, my eyes fixed on the entrance as I wait for Elsa. I do not fail to catch the front desk staff staring at me and whispering to each other. It doesn't move me anymore because I am already used to the constant gossip about me. They are gossiping about the same old thing. The low class omega girl who somehow managed to secure a job at this prominent company, yet lacking in the fashion flair that most of the employees here possess. “Who even wears that to a corporate job?” One of the ladies whispers and the second one replied.“I know right? Even if she works in the tech section, that doesn't give her a right to wear that to work. She is so embarrassing.”“I heard she is quite good with what she does, though. Matter of fact, she is the best software developer the company has. Rachel's dead jealous of her.”The ladies immediately fall into a reverent silence as a tall figure strides into the lobby, radiating an

Allison's POV“Yo, Allison!” The bar guy greets me with a wave, his friendly voice echoing through the bustling bar. “You’ve been coming around a lot lately. I hope it's not some sort of work drama driving you here, eh?”He flashes me a teasing grin, one of the many reasons I like hanging out at this bar. “I'm fine, Graham. Nothing to worry about.” I lie through my teeth as I sit on the bar stool, flashing him a fake thinned smile. But what Graham doesn't know is that my life has turned into a shitshow. My best friend is angry at me and wouldn't pick up my phone calls or reply to my messages, while Peterson, the jerk who I had believed was my soulmate, is going behind my back with some woman. And on my own bed too! If Graham knows all this, he would understand why I would be practically camping out in his bar these days.“I'll have the usual.” I say to him and Graham nods at me. “You've got it!” Graham pours my shots, handing them to me like he knows what my night needs. Normally, I would have walked immediately out of his office, because I really don't want to offend him by acting disobedient. But at this point, what more do I have to lose? I fall on my knees in front of him, bowing my head."Please, Sir. Please reconsider. I'll do anything, just let me continue working here. Allison's POVThe very next day, I'm on a bus taking me back to the outskirts of the pack. That miserable place where we Omegas have been forced to live. When I escaped from that place some years ago, I had promised myself that I wouldn't go back.I had worked harder than I thought possible, building my reputation as the best software developer in the most prestigious tech company in the city. I had clawed to the top with all my strength, only to take one hell of a fall and end up right back at the beginning.I sigh, looking away from the window and back at the screen of my phone. I had typed out a message to Elsa— I've been fired. I'm on my way back to the outskirts— and have spent hours trying to decide whether or not to send it. What if she's still mad at me? What if she reads the message and doesn't care? That would crush me completely. But this is Elsa, and if nothing else, I have faith in her kindness. So I tap the send icon and lean tiredly back into my seat. I miss my car alre

Is she nervous because I saw her in one of the dresses I bought, or because of something else?"I was right about the dress," I say. "It suits you."I'm partly saying this to reassure her and stop her from feeling nervous, but I truly mean it, even more than I realized. The dress hugs her curves in all the right places, and the deep blue color brings out the lovely flecks of gold in her warm brown eyes.A red hue spreads on Allison's cheeks in response to my words, crawling up her ears. She looks up from the hands resting on her lap and turns her gaze on me."You think so?" she asks.Really, the sort of questions she asks, as if the answers aren't obvious."Of course I do," I reply. I'm determined to finish my presentation today, and while Elsa isn't a software developer like me, she does know her way around computer systems. Things are definitely faster with her here, and we're almost done at this point.Elsa leans back from the keys she was typing on, cracking her neck and her fingers. Then she stretches until her back pops, before leaning forward to rest her head on the table."Allison!" she whines. "I'm exhausted."I sigh, rubbing my eyes."Yeah, me too," I say. We've been working nonstop for hours, and I'm honestly surprised either of us lasted this long."Let's do something else," she says."Something like what?" Elsa's POVI've never thought of myself as capable of murder, but perhaps I should have. I'm this close to grabbing a pen from this table in front of me and slashes the throat of this idiot that just won't stop saying nonsense. But that would be messy, and I would have too many questions to answer, and I would be punished at the end of all that drama.Besides, I'm supposed to accompany Ian on an errand today, and I got my nails done just this morning. It would be a waste to ruin them with the blood of fools. So I'm forced to continue sitting still and listening to this waste of space and oxygen as he goes on and on about how finding Peterson is not of great importance."I know you're acting as her representative," he's saying, "and to be honest, Miss, I really don't think you should be doing that. I don't see why you would choose such a role. But anyway, a job given to us by an Omega goes to the bottom of the list. If she wants our help in finding this man, she will have to exercise s

Xander's POVI should stop finding Allison adorable. Our relationship is purely out of necessity, and thoughts like that are what's going to make things needlessly difficult for the both of us. But it's not easy to hold onto this decision when she just keeps being so cute.Especially that blush of hers. I think I'm starting to get obsessed with that flustered look of hers, with the way blood steals up her cheeks and the sides of her neck.I used to think that her choice of clothes hid her beauty, but now I wonder if I was just being blind. She's dazzling. I can't take my eyes off her, messy hair, baggy clothes and all. I can't take my eyes off her now, as she turns in a near circle, glancing around the five-star restaurant I've brought us to with a look of pure wonder on her face.I can't help the warm feelings that go through me at this sight. I'm starting to learn just how much I love impressing Allison Carter.Dangerous thoughts, Xander, I think, scolding myself.I'm not naive. I k

Allison's POVI don't know what I expected Xander's request to be, but it wasn't this. He had told me to meet him at a different noodle shop from the one we went to last time.I figured it would be a date of some sort, even though he was being very mysterious about his intentions. The last thing I expected was for him to drive us to, of all places, the biggest mall in the city.I stare at the large building through the car window, then turn to stare at him with my mouth open."What are we doing here?" I ask."What does it look like?" he replies, already about to get out of the car.I grab his hand before he can open the door, staring at him in shock."We can't go in there," I say desperately."Why not?" he asks, giving me an odd look."People would see us together," I reply. Why is he acting like he doesn't realize that? Rachel's POVIt seems I have begun to hallucinate, because there's no way Xander just said that to me. Allison Carter obtained permission from him? When? How?Since when does one bypass the CEO's personal assistant and obtain permission directly from the CEO?That's against company protocol. And wait, if Allison Carter really got permission to leave from Xander, was she just watching me make a fool of myself this whole time?Did she plan all of this, even provoking me so that I would call Xander, all to make me humiliate myself?I glare at her, but she just stares defiantly at me. She's not gloating or anything. Was it not an act, then? Or is this just another ploy to embarrass me once again?Damn it, I hate not knowing, I think."I beg your pardon?" I say to Xander. "I'm afraid I didn't quite hear you."If he notices my sinking state of mind, he doesn't show it. He just goes on talking calmly, as if all of this is normal."I gave Miss Carter permission to leave that day," he says. "I
