Xander's POV
Maybe I should not stare at Allison Carter this way. She's smiling so brightly and in such an unguarded way that it somehow feels like cheating to watch her like this. But she's right here beside me, acting so delighted about something as small as a car ride around the city. Her eyes are closed, her head thrown back and her sun-kissed blonde hair dancing around her face. With this sight filling my senses, the most ridiculous thought blooms in my mind.
Damn, I think, Allison Carter is beautiful.
I've always known that Allison is beautiful, even if she kept it hidden under the shabby fashion and her meek manner. But here, it feels like she has tossed everything that held her down aside. She looks so unburdened, so free.
So beautiful.
It's like she's radiating some sort of light.
I've never seen her like this before. She looks younger and fresher.
Suddenly she opens her eyes and looks at me, clearly confused to have found me staring.
"Mr. Black?" she says.
I blink, turning away from her. I can't believe I let her see me staring like that. I can only imagine what my expression looked like as I stared at her. What is it about this woman that has been making me do strange things today? It hardly makes sense, and yet I know there is a lot more I would do just to watch her face light up, to watch that pure joy fill her expression.
"Rides make you really happy, don't they?" I say.
She beams, as if I've just given her a Christmas present.
"Yes," she replies happily, "they really do."
That smile is like a drug. Now that I've done it once, I want to make her smile again and again. It's a strange feeling, yet I know that I've never wanted anything else more.
"Then," I say before I can stop myself, "let's do this more often."
Allison stares at me, stunned. She has been doing this all day, as if she can't understand how anybody could possibly care about her happiness. Or, more likely, how I could possibly care about her happiness. Not that I blame her. I haven't exactly been her biggest cheerleader.
Usually, she doesn't look at my face, not even when she's speaking to me. But right now she's surprised enough to look, and her eyes search my face for whatever could prove that I'm playing a prank on her.
I'm guessing she doesn't find any, because she drops her gaze and speaks in a low voice.
"Thank you, Mr. Black."
And there, unfortunately, is the Allison I have to see every day. The one that keeps trying to make herself small enough to disappear. I don't have any idea how to get through to her when she withdraws into herself like this. On impulse, I say:
"You could call me Xander."
Allison's eyes widen and she gapes at me as if I'm pulling her legs. I don't think she remembers that she has already called me that once. When that lowlife tried to take her away back at the noodle shop, she had called out my name. I had only stepped out for a bit, only to come back and meet that scene, and I can't explain the rage that had bubbled to life within me in that moment. I had wanted to rip that man apart for daring to lay his filthy hands on her. But ripping people up doesn't exactly seem like the sort of thing that should be done during a date, I suppose.
"Mr. Black," Allison is saying, "you're my boss, and my Alpha. I can't… it's not proper—"
"Of course it's not proper," I reply. "I'm not expecting you to drop all honorifics while addressing me."
I haven't lost my mind to that extent yet, I think.
"Just while we're alone together," I continue. "It doesn't feel much like a date when you keep addressing me like that."
"I don't mind," she says, shaking her head.
"I do," I reply.
I didn't realize it before, but now I know that I want her to have a dating experience as real as possible. This won't be our last date, and taking her out would be pointless if she can't even relax around me.
"Try it," I urge.
Allison stares at me for a moment longer, then gulps.
"Xan…" she begins, her lips silently shaping my name first.
The effort seems to be taking her all her strength. She wasn't this nervous when she had to debug the system.
She bites her lip, and I have to look away.
It's either that or wrap my arms around her and seal those plump lips with mine.
"Xander," she whispers.
I can't explain the shiver of pleasure that goes through me when I hear her say my name in that soft voice.
It's official, I think with a sigh, I'm in dire need of mental help.
It takes me a few seconds to regain control of my expression, and I turn to her with a faint smile.
"You see?" I say. "It wasn't that hard, was it?"
Her only response is a slight nod. She looks like she's going to say something else, but something outside catches her attention, and soon her face is practically pressed to the glass. I look over to see what has her so fascinated, and it turns out to be a fountain in the middle of a park.
I can't help the huff of laughter that escapes my lips.
A fountain. Of course she would stare at one like it's the moon goddess that has appeared. This is Allison, after all.
A rush of fondness fills me at that thought.
"Do you want us to stop at that park?" I ask.
She quickly turns to me, her smile bright as sunlight, her eyes wide and sparkling.
"Really?" she asks.
"Of course," I reply.
"Yes, please!" she squeals.
She's out of the car the moment it rolls to a stop at the park, running towards the fountain. For the next half hour, I watch her stand before the fountain with her eyes closed and her face lifted towards the spray. The wind blows her silky hair back and makes the hem of her pink dress flutter around her calves.
I think I could have watched her forever.
Allison's POVXander Black must have been born to distract me. Once again, he has me staring at my system for a full ten minutes without doing anything, and he didn't even have to be here to do it!I sigh, staring at the screen to remember what I was doing before the memories of yesterday swept me away.Memories of Xander's eyes, and the unusual softness in them. Memories of his concern and his kindness. He had gone to a noodle shop just because I wanted to, and let me spend a foolishly long time at the fountain without complaining, even waiting for me and driving me home afterwards. All rather small things to be gushing about, I know, but dating Peterson for four years does that to a person. And that look in his eyes…I had turned away from the fountain at one point, looking around to see if he had gone, and there he was, drawing my eyes like he always does. His warm gaze had been fixed on me, an alluring smile playing on his lips. It had looked… almost like he might maybe somehow lo
Allison's POVI don't remember terminating the call. The second my mind registers Elsa's words, I'm out of my seat. As I hurriedly pack my stuff into my bag and turn off my system, I can hear Amy saying something in an annoyed tone. I don't bother listening.I'm too busy rushing out of the office.Peterson has disappeared. That's all I can think about as I take the stairs two at a time. I know I'm panicking, but I can't help it. Peterson could be anywhere. He could be doing anything, now that I can no longer keep an eye on him. He might be a useless bum, but even I have learnt from experience how dangerous Peterson can get when I take my eyes off him. He could be putting plans in motion to ruin my life at this very moment. I have to find him immediately, and I have to start now. I know that leaving the company during work hours without obtaining permission is going to get me into serious trouble with the higher-ups. Especially with Rachel Fisher, but I can worry about that later. As I
Rachel's POVGoldbrew cafe is the best cafe in the city, which is why it's the only cafe I ever walk into. I even had to burn the clothes I had worn to the place. Who knows how many germs they had picked up? Way too much for simple washing to have been enough, that's for sure.As if I didn't already have enough reason to despise that bitch. She didn't even have the good sense to know that just because he said that employment in
Allison's POVAs I settle into my desk, I can't help wondering what would have happened if I had missed work today. Nothing good, that's for sure.Thankfully, I didn't have to, since I was able to find out something about Peterson's location last night. I would have loved to find out the exact place he is, but I was able to find out where he was last seen, so that's something. I already had Elsa send the information to the security personnel searching for him, and now all I can do is hope that they find him.Not a very reassuring activity, but I'll survive.I'm about to get started for the day when I feel someone glaring at me so hard that it's a wonder they haven't burned a hole in the back of my head. I turn around, only to have my suspicions confirmed. The person staring is Amy. Rachel's POVEver since she stepped her filthy feet into our company, I've always wanted to break Allison Carter. Yet she always brushed off whatever I did with that big, idiotic smile she always wears. It was like nothing could shake her or hurt her.Until today.I can't keep a smirk of satisfaction off my face as I watch her tremble. She looks like her whole world is crumbling around her.I would make her whole world crumble around her if I could. But for now, I'll have to be contented with snatching the one thing she wants so desperately from her. It's an even more satisfying feeling than I expected."My office gets dirtier the longer you stand there," I say, returning to my book. "Get lost. I'm done with you.""No."That one word, delivered with enough poison to kill me where I sit, makes my head snap up and my jaw drop in shock."What?" I demand, certain that I've heard her wrong."I said no," she replies in a cold voice. "We are not done here, Rachel Fisher."The words hit me li
Rachel's POVIt seems I have begun to hallucinate, because there's no way Xander just said that to me. Allison Carter obtained permission from him? When? How?Since when does one bypass the CEO's personal assistant and obtain permission directly from the CEO?That's against company protocol. And wait, if Allison Carter really got permission to leave from Xander, was she just watching me make a fool of myself this whole time?Did she plan all of this, even provoking me so that I would call Xander, all to make me humiliate myself?I glare at her, but she just stares defiantly at me. She's not gloating or anything. Was it not an act, then? Or is this just another ploy to embarrass me once again?Damn it, I hate not knowing, I think."I beg your pardon?" I say to Xander. He just goes on talking calmly, as if all of this is normal."I gave Miss Carter permission to leave that day," he says. "I

Xander's POVI should stop finding Allison adorable. Our relationship is purely out of necessity, and thoughts like that are what's going to make things needlessly difficult for the both of us. Allison's POVElsa and I are alone in my apartment, three different computer systems open in front of us, all in use at the same time. I'm determined to finish my presentation today, and while Elsa isn't a software developer like me, she does know her way around computer systems. Things are definitely faster with her here, and we're almost done at this point.Elsa leans back from the keys she was typing on, cracking her neck and her fingers. Then she stretches until her back pops, before leaning forward to rest her head on the table."Allison!" she whines. "I'm exhausted."I sigh, rubbing my eyes."Yeah, me too," I say. We've been working nonstop for hours, and I'm honestly surprised either of us lasted this long."Let's do something else," she says."Something like what?" I ask.She turns her head to face me, a big smile blooming on her face."Let's talk about your outfit for the Tech Wizard competition, of course," she says. "Have you tried on the clothes Xander Black bought you yet
Allison's POV"Oh my gosh!" I exclaim, staring at my phone.Elsa chokes on her lemonade out of surprise and drops the glass quickly, coughing."What the hell, Allison?" she asks.I pat her back, smiling sheepishly. I look around the company cafeteria to see if anyone saw what happened. Sure enough, there are a lot of people staring at me like I've gone crazy. I quickly return my gaze to Elsa, rubbing her back gently till she stops coughing."I'm so sorry, Elsa," I say."It's okay," she replies, straightening up and picking up her glass from the table. "But seriously, what was that for?"I stare back down at the screen of my phone."It's five days to next month," I say."Okay…" she says, raising her eyebrow. "And?""You're hopeless," I say with a sigh. "It's less than two weeks to the Tech Wizard competition, remember?""Oh!" she exclaims, "I totally forgot. How are your preparations coming along? Are you ready yet?"I have to sigh again."I actually haven't made as much progress as I
Elsa's POVI've never thought of myself as capable of murder, but perhaps I should have. I'm this close to grabbing a pen from this table in front of me and slashes the throat of this idiot that just won't stop saying nonsense. But that would be messy, and I would have too many questions to answer, and I would be punished at the end of all that drama.Besides, I'm supposed to accompany Ian on an errand today, and I got my nails done just this morning. It would be a waste to ruin them with the blood of fools. So I'm forced to continue sitting still and listening to this waste of space and oxygen as he goes on and on about how finding Peterson is not of great importance."I know you're acting as her representative," he's saying, "and to be honest, Miss, I really don't think you should be doing that. I don't see why you would choose such a role. But anyway, a job given to us by an Omega goes to the bottom of the list. If she wants our help in finding this man, she will have to exercise s
