Allison's POV
I don't remember terminating the call. The second my mind registers Elsa's words, I'm out of my seat. As I hurriedly pack my stuff into my bag and turn off my system, I can hear Amy saying something in an annoyed tone. I don't bother listening.
I'm too busy rushing out of the office.
Peterson has disappeared.
That's all I can think about as I take the stairs two at a time. I know I'm panicking, but I can't help it. Peterson could be anywhere. He could be doing anything, now that I can no longer keep an eye on him. He might be a useless bum, but even I have learnt from experience how dangerous Peterson can get when I take my eyes off him. He could be putting plans in motion to ruin my life at this very moment. I have to find him immediately, and I have to start now. I know that leaving the company during work hours without obtaining permission is going to get me into serious trouble with the higher-ups. Especially with Rachel Fisher, but I can worry about that later.
As I hurry out of the building, I dial Elsa's number.
"When?" is what I say as soon as she picks.
"I'm not sure," she replies. "Earlier this morning, I think? The security personnel we got to keep tabs on him called to report to me that he had slipped out of his neighbourhood somehow. His house is empty, and he took some of his stuff and emptied his bank account too, so clearly he's been planning to run for a while."
Of course the security personnel called her. When we went to hire them, they wouldn't even speak to me, because they "don't take orders from a lowly Omega".
"Allison?" Elsa calls, sounding worried. "What are you going to do? Let me help you with this."
I'm grateful for the offer, but I can't tell her that I'm leaving the company right now. She would just insist on coming with me, and then she would also get in trouble.
I can't let that happen.
"Could you call the security personnel back?" I say. "Tell them to embark on a search for him immediately. And to send you hourly updates on their progress. He needs to be found as soon as possible."
"I'll do that," Elsa replies without hesitation.
"I'll do everything in my power to make sure that he's found."
"Thanks, Elsa," I say.
"What about you, Allison?" Elsa asks. "What are you planning to do?"
She still sounds worried, as if she fears that I'll go driving around the city in search of him. If I thought that would be useful in any way, I would have done it without hesitation. But I'm not so foolish that I would go around doing pointless things just because I'm panicking.
"What am I planning to do?" I reply. "Of course, I'm planning to do what I do best."
"Good luck," Elsa says, and I know she understands.
"You too," I reply.
I hang up when I get to my car, and I'm filled with purpose as I drive out of the company premises.
I'm going to do what I do best. I'm not authorized to search for people using the company's computers, so I'm going home, and I'm going to tear the internet apart if that's what it will take to find that bastard.
Hacking isn't something I do usually, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
……
I'm typing away furiously at the keyboard when Ian gets home. I actually don't notice that he has returned until he knocks on the door.
"Come in," I call out, not taking my eyes off the screen.
Ian walks in, carrying a tray with covered plates in it.
"I brought you dinner," he says.
"Thanks," I reply, still typing.
He drops the tray on my bedside table and walks closer to stand behind me.
"What are you doing?" he asks.
"Searching for Peterson."
I had hoped to find him by now, but he did an even better job of disappearing than I expected. I guess he can do something right if he puts his mind to it. A pity that he never puts his mind to doing things that are actually reasonable or useful.
"Oh," Ian says with sympathy. "I heard from Elsa. Where do you think he could have gone?"
"Your guess is as good as mine," I reply, running my fingers through my hair with a tired sigh. "This might sound strange, but I really don't know nearly enough about him. He wasn't the sort to talk about himself while we were dating. I see now that this should have warned me, but… well."
But I was a fool back then, is what I think, but don't say.
I know that Ian would just start lecturing me like Elsa does. A spike of pain shoots through my head, and I lean back in my seat, placing the back of my hand on my forehead. Ian touches my shoulder gently.
"How long have you been staring at that screen?" he asks.
"Long," I reply. "Hours. Since morning."
"You need to take a break," he says. "Eat your dinner, and have some rest."
"While Peterson is out there plotting my downfall."
"I'm sure even Peterson has to take a break from his evil plans to eat and rest," Ian insists.
I sigh, but I can't argue with him. I do need to take a break. My stomach is aching from being empty for so long and my fingers are numb from typing for hours. My neck is stiff and my head is swimming.
"Fine, you win," I say.
I stand and stretch, cracking my fingers and my neck. Then I sit on my bed and uncover the plates.
"You'll have to provide distraction, though," I say, picking up my spoon.
"What kind of distraction?" Ian asks.
"Hmm…" I tap my chin with the spoon, smiling mischievously. "You can tell me which of the lovely ladies at the company have caught your eye."
I don't expect the blood that rushes to Ian's cheeks as he hastens to deny my words.
"There isn't anyone like that!" he says.
Ian is usually so calm and collected. It's very rare to see him so flustered.
This is interesting, I think, my smile growing wider.
I tuck into my meal as I get ready to tease the life out of him. What an excellent way to distract myself.
Rachel's POVGoldbrew cafe is the best cafe in the city, which is why it's the only cafe I ever walk into. Usually, the air-conditioned interior and the sweet aroma of coffee are enough to make me feel good, especially after a hectic day at work. But these days, all this place reminds me of is that bitch called Allison Carter, and how she humiliated me by making me come to the Omega outskirts.I had to scrub my skin for hours just to get the disgusting stench of that filthy place off myself. I even had to burn the clothes I had worn to the place. Who knows how many germs they had picked up? Way too much for simple washing to have been enough, that's for sure.As if I didn't already have enough reason to despise that bitch. I've always known I would never be able to stand her, from the very first moment I saw her. She had the guts to show up for an interview, taking advantage of Xander's kindness. She didn't even have the good sense to know that just because he said that employment in
Allison's POVAs I settle into my desk, I can't help wondering what would have happened if I had missed work today. Nothing good, that's for sure.Thankfully, I didn't have to, since I was able to find out something about Peterson's location last night. I would have loved to find out the exact place he is, but I was able to find out where he was last seen, so that's something. I already had Elsa send the information to the security personnel searching for him, and now all I can do is hope that they find him.Not a very reassuring activity, but I'll survive.I'm about to get started for the day when I feel someone glaring at me so hard that it's a wonder they haven't burned a hole in the back of my head. I turn around, only to have my suspicions confirmed. The person staring is Amy. While I'm not surprised that she's the one, I'm quite surprised by the speed with which she abandoned her false niceness tactic. She must have realized that I would never fall for it, but I didn't expect he
Rachel's POVEver since she stepped her filthy feet into our company, I've always wanted to break Allison Carter. Yet she always brushed off whatever I did with that big, idiotic smile she always wears. It was like nothing could shake her or hurt her.Until today.I can't keep a smirk of satisfaction off my face as I watch her tremble. She looks like her whole world is crumbling around her.I would make her whole world crumble around her if I could. But for now, I'll have to be contented with snatching the one thing she wants so desperately from her. It's an even more satisfying feeling than I expected."My office gets dirtier the longer you stand there," I say, returning to my book. "Get lost. I'm done with you.""No."That one word, delivered with enough poison to kill me where I sit, makes my head snap up and my jaw drop in shock."What?" I demand, certain that I've heard her wrong."I said no," she replies in a cold voice. "We are not done here, Rachel Fisher."The words hit me li
Rachel's POVIt seems I have begun to hallucinate, because there's no way Xander just said that to me. Allison Carter obtained permission from him? When? How?Since when does one bypass the CEO's personal assistant and obtain permission directly from the CEO?That's against company protocol. And wait, if Allison Carter really got permission to leave from Xander, was she just watching me make a fool of myself this whole time?Did she plan all of this, even provoking me so that I would call Xander, all to make me humiliate myself?I glare at her, but she just stares defiantly at me. She's not gloating or anything. Was it not an act, then? Or is this just another ploy to embarrass me once again?Damn it, I hate not knowing, I think."I beg your pardon?" I say to Xander. "I'm afraid I didn't quite hear you."If he notices my sinking state of mind, he doesn't show it. He just goes on talking calmly, as if all of this is normal."I gave Miss Carter permission to leave that day," he says. "I
Allison's POVI don't know what I expected Xander's request to be, but it wasn't this. He had told me to meet him at a different noodle shop from the one we went to last time.I figured it would be a date of some sort, even though he was being very mysterious about his intentions. The last thing I expected was for him to drive us to, of all places, the biggest mall in the city.I stare at the large building through the car window, then turn to stare at him with my mouth open."What are we doing here?" I ask."What does it look like?" he replies, already about to get out of the car.I grab his hand before he can open the door, staring at him in shock."We can't go in there," I say desperately."Why not?" he asks, giving me an odd look."People would see us together," I reply. Why is he acting like he doesn't realize that? I think."They won't," he says."Why, does being Alpha grant you the power to blind people?" I ask, too scared to bother about how the question sounds."No," Xander s
Xander's POVI should stop finding Allison adorable. Our relationship is purely out of necessity, and thoughts like that are what's going to make things needlessly difficult for the both of us. But it's not easy to hold onto this decision when she just keeps being so cute.Especially that blush of hers. I think I'm starting to get obsessed with that flustered look of hers, with the way blood steals up her cheeks and the sides of her neck.I used to think that her choice of clothes hid her beauty, but now I wonder if I was just being blind. She's dazzling. I can't take my eyes off her, messy hair, baggy clothes and all. I can't take my eyes off her now, as she turns in a near circle, glancing around the five-star restaurant I've brought us to with a look of pure wonder on her face.I can't help the warm feelings that go through me at this sight. Elsa's POVI've never thought of myself as capable of murder, but perhaps I should have. It would be a waste to ruin them with the blood of fools. So I'm forced to continue sitting still and listening to this waste of space and oxygen as he goes on and on about how finding Peterson is not of great importance."I know you're acting as her representative," he's saying, "and to be honest, Miss, I really don't think you should be doing that. I don't see why you would choose such a role. But anyway, a job given to us by an Omega goes to the bottom of the list. If she wants our help in finding this man, she will have to exercise s
Allison's POV"Oh my gosh!" I exclaim, staring at my phone.Elsa chokes on her lemonade out of surprise and drops the glass quickly, coughing."What the hell, Allison?" she asks.I pat her back, smiling sheepishly. I look around the company cafeteria to see if anyone saw what happened. Sure enough, there are a lot of people staring at me like I've gone crazy. I quickly return my gaze to Elsa, rubbing her back gently till she stops coughing."I'm so sorry, Elsa," I say."It's okay," she replies, straightening up and picking up her glass from the table. "But seriously, what was that for?"I stare back down at the screen of my phone."It's five days to next month," I say."Okay…" she says, raising her eyebrow. "And?""You're hopeless," I say with a sigh. "It's less than two weeks to the Tech Wizard competition, remember?""Oh!" she exclaims, "I totally forgot. How are your preparations coming along? Are you ready yet?"I have to sigh again."I actually haven't made as much progress as I
Xander's POVAllison is sitting with her hands on her lap, fiddling with her fingers. Is she nervous because I saw her in one of the dresses I bought, or because of something else?"I was right about the dress," I say. "It suits you."I'm partly saying this to reassure her and stop her from feeling nervous, but I truly mean it, even more than I realized. The dress hugs her curves in all the right places, and the deep blue color brings out the lovely flecks of gold in her warm brown eyes.A red hue spreads on Allison's cheeks in response to my words, crawling up her ears. She looks up from the hands resting on her lap and turns her gaze on me."You think so?" she asks.Really, the sort of questions she asks, as if the answers aren't obvious."Of course I do," I reply. "You should dress like this more often, if it doesn't make you uncomfortable."She ducks her head shyly, biting her lower lip. Golden blonde hair falls in a shiny long curtain over her face, hiding it from view.I want to
Allison's POVElsa and I are alone in my apartment, three different computer systems open in front of us, all in use at the same time. I'm determined to finish my presentation today, and while Elsa isn't a software developer like me, she does know her way around computer systems. Things are definitely faster with her here, and we're almost done at this point.Elsa leans back from the keys she was typing on, cracking her neck and her fingers. Then she stretches until her back pops, before leaning forward to rest her head on the table."Allison!" she whines. "I'm exhausted."I sigh, rubbing my eyes."Yeah, me too," I say. We've been working nonstop for hours, and I'm honestly surprised either of us lasted this long."Let's do something else," she says."Something like what?" I ask.She turns her head to face me, a big smile blooming on her face."Let's talk about your outfit for the Tech Wizard competition, of course," she says. "Have you tried on the clothes Xander Black bought you yet
