Chapter 16

Margaret brushed her long blonde hair while sitting at her desk. When she thought about Carson's recent behavior, her eyes got narrow. There was a problem.

"He's so cold," she said to herself. "It's like he's a different person."

A soft knock stopped her in her tracks. "Come in," she said.

One of the maids, Clara, came in with new towels. "Hi Miss Margaret, good morning. I hope you had a good night's sleep.

She looked at Clara in the mirror. "Clara, you've worked here a long time, right?"

Clara nodded and put the towels in order. "Yes, Miss. Almost five years now."

"Tell me," Margaret asked as she turned around. "Has Carson always been so... distant?"

Clara hesitated, her hands stilling. "Mr. Carson has always been kind, Miss. I'm just a maid, though. "I don't really know him."

Margaret's eyes got very dark. "You're not telling the truth." What do you want to hide?"

Clara's face turned pale. "Nothing, Miss!" Promise!"
