Chapter 22

Carson looked at the door that was shut for a long time after Alice had left. He was having a hard time processing the shocking news she had just given him. Being pregnant. Alice was going to have his child.

He asked himself, "What am I going to do?" as he got up and walked back and forth across his office.

There was Alice, who was sweet and pretty. The girl who got his heart without trying. He felt warm inside just thinking about her carrying his child. But he also had to take care of his family, do his job, and marry Margaret as planned.

Carson went to the window and looked out at the skyline of London, but he didn't really see it. He thought about what his parents expected from him. He had always known that having the name MacPherson meant taking care of things. But for the first time in his life, he wished he was just a normal guy who could do what made him happy.

The sound of a knock on the door woke him up. "Come in," he said as he turned away from the window.
