Chapter 17

Alice woke up feeling sick, which she had been feeling a lot these past few weeks. With a soft grunt, she put her hand on her stomach, which was turning over. Early morning light came in through her small window and gave her simple room a soft glow.

She said in a low voice, "Not again," and slowly stood up. When her head started to spin, she took a deep breath to calm down.

The knock on the door startled her. "Alice? What are you doing?" It was Clara's voice, and it sounded worried.

"Yes, I'm awake," Alice answered, though her voice was a little shakey. "I'll be out in a minute."

She let out a sigh when she heard Clara's footsteps going away. Her patience was running out. There was a clear problem.

Alice's mind was racing as she got ready for the day. She had been having a bad mood for weeks. She first thought it was stress because she knew that sneaking around with Carson while Margaret looked at her suspiciously was enough to make anyone sick. Okay, but now...
