Emile sat by the windowsill hugging her knees and looking at the endless night with a desolate expression trying to filter out the annoying sounds coming from the master bedroom. She let out a soft sigh thought about her miserable existence. Eight years of infatuated love and 3 years of marriage with absolute devotion left her with nothing but endless shame and an empty house. In the three years of marriage, there was not a day that the newspapers and entertainment world did not have a news of the colorful scandals for her husband.
Emile rested her chin on her knees as she thought back to the folly of her youth.
She met Daniel during her first year of university at a gathering of family friends. If at first, she was mesmerized by his handsome face and his domineering aura, later she fell in love with his brilliance and character.
Emile was an outstanding bubbly and beautiful girl. She was the goddess in the hearts of almost all the young men at her university, but she had eyes only for Daniel. However, she soon realized that her affections were one-sided and that he already had a sweetheart, Michelle. Even so, she was happy to watch from afar, silently blessing his happiness.
Whether it was a blessing or curse, Emile didn’t know then, but fate gave her a present in the form of her grandfather’s dying wish. She was to marry the grandson of his best friend. Her grandfather was the only family she had left in this world and had doted on her endlessly. There was no way she could deny him his dying wish.
Emile went to the cafe where her grandfather had arranged to meet her prospective husband. She still remembered the joy she felt as she saw Daniel sitting in the café waiting for her, although it was short lived. The fantasy broke the moment he opened his mouth.
“Ms Burke, I already have someone I love.” Daniel sighed “This marriage is my grandfather’s edict. I can’t do anything, but I hope you will withdraw.”
Emile sighed as she remembered her next words 3 years ago.
“You might not believe me, but I am also in a tricky situation. My grandfather is dying, and I want to honor his last wish.”
Emile wasn’t joking when she said that he wouldn’t believe her… no one would…. Everyone knew about her fascination of him.
“Heh!” He snorted with disdain.
“I can however promise you that we can live separately till my grandfather passes away peacefully and then divorce.” Emile took a deep breath before continuing “I will also speak with Michelle so that you won’t have any difficulties.”
“No need.” Daniel smirked as he stood up “This marriage will not happen. I will not marry anyone other than Michelle.”
Emile shrugged helplessly as she walked out of the café. She wandered around the park close to her home thinking about how to break this news to her grandfather when her phone rang. It was Daniel asking to meet again with Michelle.
The meeting was nothing special. It was basically Michelle showing off how much weight she carried in Daniel’s heart and enacting her deep sacrifice for him.
Michelle even had the audacity to demand that they have a room for her at their wedding home so that she and Daniel could stay together and Emile could stay in the guest room when no one was around.
Emile sat through expressionlessly since she wanted to fulfill her grandfather’s dying wish.
The wedding between the Burkes and Holstons was a extravagant affair although there was no joy in the hearts of the bride and groom. Before the wedding, Emile tried to pacify herself that she could at least fulfill the dream of marrying her prince charming even if it was fake. But standing in the church she realized that there was no joy only humiliation especially when the groom even refused to kiss the bride. The emcee joked that the bride and groom were shy to tide over the awkwardness.
Six months after the wedding Emile’s grandfather passed away happily never knowing the heartache his precious granddaughter faced. Emile wanted to be true to her word and to escape from the constant heartache she faced as her husband frolicked around with his lover. She got the divorce papers ready soon after the mourning period only to have Daniel burst her bubble. One of his grandfather’s conditions were that he couldn’t get divorced before 3 years.
During this time, she had learned that the reason Daniel agreed to the marriage was because of Michelle’s coaxing. His grandfather had issued the ultimatum that he would forfeit his right to inherit the Holston empire if he didn’t marry Emile. Daniel was ready to forfeit the world, but Michelle didn’t want to give up the life of riches. Although the reasons she came up with in front of Daniel were all wrapped in her love and willingness to sacrifice for his happiness; willing to be a nameless lover till his grandfather accepted her.
Emile decided to continue with the farce as she pacified herself that this was her sacrifice for her love’s happily ever after. She busied herself with her work; she loved designing and this consumed all her time, returning home only to sleep at night. Just when Emile had reconciled with her fate, Michelle suddenly left; that was 2 years ago. Daniel went crazy searching for her without any results. However, things went spirally downhill for Emile 6 months ago.
Although Emile didn’t know the reason, it was like Daniel flipped into a violent beast trapping her at home, forcefully making her resign from her job which was the only joy in her life. Even then, Emile never complained. She thought perhaps this would ease their relationship. Not only did he restrict her movements, he also verbally and sexually assaulted her without mercy. Her refusals were met with a rebuke that this was her duty as part of their marriage.
Ever since she married him, even while Michelle lived with them, she fulfilled her duties as wife. Cleaned, cooked and even waited for him to get back home before resting, even though she was working full-time. The only solace while Michelle was living with them was that she could preserve her dignity by not having to fulfill her duties as a wife in bed…. but that didn’t last long.
Emile had no idea how she survived; She had cut-off all her contacts and existed merely as the shell of the vibrant, brilliant lady she once was. She was a joke to the outside world. Her husband spent his days among the flowers, filling every gossip page in the country without giving her any face. What was even more unbearable were the bedmates he brought home and expected her to serve, like a maid. Even so, she never complained… hoping that one day, he might see her devotion and love her.
Michelle’s arrival 2 months later at her doorstep broke this last straw she was holding onto... Only then did she realize the reason for her torture …. Her best friend Abbey who was an entertainment reporter filled her in; Michelle had told Daniel that the reason she left was because Emile threatened to kill her.
Emile refused to accept this and confronted the two but other than Michelle pretending to be frightened and Daniel losing his temper and assaulting her…she didn’t have any gains.
Emile raised her head as she woke up from memory lane. Tomorrow was their third wedding anniversary. She stood up as her eyes filled with determination. She walked up to her laptop and sent two emails before logging off and going to sleep.
Emile woke up with the first rays of sunlight. She hummed a tune as she busied herself in the kitchen making breakfast. Her steps were lighter with the joy of determination after a torturous night of self-evaluation and reminiscing. She finished her breakfast and left home without waiting for the Daniel to wake up.Daniel however was already awake. He lifted his eyebrows curiously as he heard the happy humming coming from outside. But he didn’t get up as Michelle was sleeping nestled in his embrace.Emile first visited her grandfather trusted aide, Lawyer Hee and spent the whole morning discussing and drafting her next steps. In the afternoon she visited grandpa Holston.“Grandpa, I am here to visit you.” Emile stood at the entrance of the living room after the butler had announced her arrival.“Come… come….” Grandpa Holston waved his wrinkled hand as he invited her enthusiastically. Emile walked over and sat next to him with a polite smile “How are you feeling, Grandpa?”“All the mor
Daniel got in his car in irritation and flung the divorce agreement application copy in annoyance onto the passenger seat and drove away. He hit the steering wheel in annoyance a few times to get rid of his anger. He had no idea why he was angry. This was what he wanted for the last three years…. Now that he had got it without even having to ask for it…. why was he annoyed? He calmed himself down by the time he reached Michelle’s apartment. He rationalized his anger was due to Emile’s arrogance and nothing more. He put the divorce agreement in the dashboard before walking up to pick her.The banquet was for celebrating the fiftieth birthday of one of his business partners who was also his father’s friend. Normally people would bring their spouses to such events; but Daniel never bought Emile… not even once. Either it was Michelle or one of the models he was having an affair with while Michelle went away. Initially this was the joke of the event and Emile’s status would be the butt of
Daniel woke up disoriented and looked around in haze. He had no idea where he was… the last thing he remembered was drinking with Ronald. Looking around he realized that this was rooms upstairs for guests that didn’t want to head back.He heaved a sigh of relief as he saw Ronald lying even more wasted on the next bed.“What time is it?” Ronald lifted his head lazily as he heard Daniel getting ready.“Around 1 in the afternoon.”“What???” Ronald sat up in a flurry.“I will head back home and see what needs to be done.” Daniel tapped his back “You take your time.”Daniel sat in the car rubbing his forehead He regretted his rudeness yesterday. He took out the divorce agreement from the dashboard to read before going back. There was nothing to read…. he looked at the papers in shock. There were no items listed under divorce settlement. Only a statement “Headed to the bridge of no return; Strangers forever.”Daniel shook his head in denial before his lips curled in ridicule. He knew how mu
Daniel didn’t stay long at Grandpa Holston’s place as he was in low spirits with the blow that the news of Emile’s departure brought him.Ronald drove while Daniel sat lost in thought on the way back.“Why did she leave just like that?” Daniel mumbled as he sat in a daze. “Why would she stay?” Ronald retorted rudely “Did you ever give her a reason to stay in these 3 years?”“Huh?” Daniel turned to look at Ronald feeling lost. He couldn’t explain his current state of mind. He should be happy but why did he feel lost?“Where to?” Ronald drummed his fingers on the steering wheel. He didn’t want to pursue this topic. Although he never agreed with what Daniel did over the last three years; he didn’t want him to delve into it, especially now that there was no point.“Your apartment or house?” Ronald asked again, since he didn’t get a response.“House??” Daniel repeated regretfully before asking “Drop me off at my office.”The “house” Ronald referred to, was the wedding present Grandpa Hols
Emile sat in the airport lounge waiting for her flight. This was the first time in three years that she felt peaceful. She took a deep breath and exhaled … in an effort to exhale the last three years of her life as a bad dream. She didn’t want to be resentful; She chose to forget and start anew. That was why she wanted to travel somewhere new… somewhere she didn’t know anyone. She wasn’t running away. She would eventually come back. This is where her most cherished people .. her parents and grandfather rested. She would not give up on them for the sake of someone who didn’t cherish her. She needed to heal. She would come back when she was ready to face this place without resentment and regret. “Dring… dring… dring…” Emile’s phone broke the tranquility of the moment. “Girl, where are you?” Abbey screamed as soon as the call was answered. “I am in the VIP lounge of the airport.” Emile responded with a smile as a warm feeling crept up her heart. Some friendships never change. No matte
Emile and Abbey reached their first destination, Mauritius around midday. Having no plan was the best plan. The two best friends decided to chill at the world class hotel they booked into on the first day before getting into touristy mode and booked themselves into an indulgent beauty saloon for a relaxing massage after a sumptuous feast. The next five days were jam-packed with activities starting a luxurious catamaran cruise of the northern islands. Abbey’s camera lens snapped away at the breath-taking views while Emile immersed herself in the experience. This was her first time travelling away from home, away from comfort zone; She had always lived a protected life with her grandfather and cousins where university was the furthest, she travelled away from home. Every experience was new and invigorating, opening a whole new world, whether it was admiring the vibrant colors of the ocean or the magnificent mountain views or snorkeling at one of the beaches, diving with Emperor Angelf
Michelle came to Daniel's office after shopping to her heart's content and accompanied Daniel outside for dinner to celebrate his freedom. Later she took him to her place and told him that they would stay here for the time being. Daniel didn't have any objections and assumed that she was considering his feelings, knowing that he wasn't ready to go back there. On the fourth day, as Daniel was getting ready to go to work, she informed him that they would move back that day. "Danie Baby, I will pack and move in the afternoon. You should come back early." She twirled her fingers on his chest "I will be waiting." "Why are we moving so soon?" Daniel was stumped. She didn't ask him if he was ready to go back. No matter how you looked at it, he had lived there with Emile for 2.5 years, on their own. Even if he swore, he didn't have any thoughts towards her, he would be lying through his teeth if he said that there were no instances when he wasn't tempted or moved. "Why?" Michelle pouted a
Daniel reached back at the villa around 6pm; The chat with Ron helped resolve his dilemma. He managed to convince himself that he knew what he wanted and there was no need to be confused.Michelle was watching television in the lounge room when he arrived.“Your back.” Michelle smiled happily as she saw him and hopped into his embrace but soon wrinkled her nose “You drank?”“Just a social meet.” Daniel smiled as he hugged her “Were you bor…” He didn’t complete what he was about to say as he was shocked by the interior. It had totally changed.“Do you like it?” Michelle smiled mischievously as she looked at his face waiting for his approval. Sadly, the approval never lit up on his face. What Michelle didn’t know was that although this was the wedding house that Grandpa Holston gifted Daniel and Emile, Daniel had personally designed it as it was always meant to be his and Michelle’s house in his mind. The only place he asked Emile’s input was the guest bedroom, even the kitchen was desi
Daniel didn’t speak to Chris Jnr on the way back; he sat sulking and occasionally giving him an annoyed look without realizing that his grievance was against a six-year-old. But the sentiments were totally lost on Chris Jnr who thought about it as ‘good riddance to bad rubbish!’Daniel didn’t want much… he just wanted his son to care… to ask how he was… whether he was hurt? He didn’t expect his son to do much but an excuse of helplessness to show he cared… but what he got in return was ignorant indifference.Chris Jnr feigned ignorance to Daniel’s sulking and kept staring out of the window as always; no one would suspect that a six-year-old was doing this on purpose, especially for a kid like Chris Jnr, whose norm was to sit quietly staring out the window. On the flight, Daniel wanted to warn Chris Jnr several times not to tell Emile about what happened, but he didn’t know how to; the awkward silence lasted till the duo reached home. Well, awkward silence for Daniel and blissful silenc
George tried to rush to Daniel’s side before the police took him away, but he wasn’t successful; the more he tried, the more he got pushed back. He would have to be a fool if he didn’t realize that the shadow guards were purposefully making it difficult for him, making it impossible to get to his boss’s side in order to facilitate the arrest proceeding smoothly. How could the shadow guards not know what their little miss wanted? How dare they allow even the slightest negligence? The only thing George could do was rush after police car, hoping to make it in time, at least avoiding his boss from being locked up. He was surprised to see Chris Jnr sitting quietly in the car, expressionless, without any intention of stopping/ interfering with the ruckus. Until now, he had assumed that Chris Jnr was still in class, unaware of the situation but what he saw in front of him turned his world view upside down. Shouldn’t the kid be concerned when his father was being beaten senseless? Even if he i
“How is daddy doing?” Chris Jnr asked little treasure in concern as he walked back to their classroom holding hands.“He’s still holding it together, feigning a happy face to keep me happy." Emm pursed her lips with a helpless expression before she leaned closer and whispered in her brother’s ears "He's gone to help with the request from that president we met when we took daddy’s fancy plane.” “Eldest brother came back to keep me company.” Emm spoke with a bright smile as she knew what her brother was going to ask next.“Daddy was going to change his plans after you went with that bad father, but I didn’t let him.” Emm raised her chin proudly “I called Eldest brother so that I wouldn’t delay daddy’s important business.”“Little treasure is very sensible.” Chris Jnr had a doting smile as he tapped the tip of his little sister’s nose.Emm’s smile grew wider and brighter as she pointed her chin towards the sky; she was floating, her pride shooting to the skies after being acknowledged by
“Where are you taking me?” Neil asked with feigned irritation as Marcus led his through an overgrown grassy forest area which was located behind the prestigious school.“Aha….” Neil kept on with his theatrics as he feigned an enlightened expression “Are you going to demand entry to the school under the pretence that you have me as your hostage?? Are you???”“Che!!!” Marcus rolled his eyes as he increased his pace and kept 2 feet ahead of Neil.“Hey… wait for me… how can you claim to have me as a hostage if I run away?” Neil asked with a shamelessly smug face as he firmly believed his theory although his body was more honest, his legs kept up Marcus.“It’s here.” Marcus stopped at an inconspicuous spot and leaned against the wall casually, with his hands in his pocket.“Here???” Neil looked around at the unkept environment with disgust as he walked towards Marcus.Marcus took two steps hurriedly, keeping his distance away from Neil.“Why are you moving away?” Neil asked innocently as he
“I will get Night Vigil to charter the trip to Uncle Neil’s place.” Marcus was about to get up when Emm pulled him back as she hit her forehead with an expression that was midway between helpless and ridicule “My dear eldest brother, where do you think my daddy’s appendages will be when he is in trouble?”“You mean ….” Marcus eyes widened “Uncle Neil is here…”Emm nodded with an all-knowing expression, but added “Not exactly… I mean they are not here, but they are at Royale Lux.”“Let’s go.” Marcus led the way whistling, without feeling even the slightest bit of embarrassment after being ridiculed by his little sister.“Why are you here?” Neil grumbled as soon as he saw Marcus, on opening the door.“And I am not alone.” Marcus chuckled as he entered, revealing Emm who was hiding behind him. Although Emm boasted shamelessly that she was going to charm Neil with her cuteness, she was still scared; she held onto Marcus’s shirt as she hid behind him and peeped cautiously towards Neil.“God
The next morning as everyone sat for breakfast, Emm dialled Marcus-“Eldest brother…” She pouted as she called out in grievance as soon as he answered.“What’s wrong?” Marcus’s concerned voice came from the other end.“Nothing…um…um…” Emm sniffled as she shook her head.Chris stopped eating as he walked up to his little treasure and carried her in his arms and cuddled her; he didn’t need to ask to know what was wrong. His treasures had never been separated. He leaned forward and whispered, “Daddy is not going. Daddy will postpone the trip.”“But that is an important thing.” Emm blinked innocently.“Nothing is more important than my treasures.” Chris smiled reassuringly as he gently smoothed her back.“Eldest brother, little treasure is all alone and is not happy. Can you come to accompany me?” Emm blinked innocently as she spoke into the phone; she didn’t forget to complain “Big brother went with that bad man yesterday; he didn’t care about little treasure.”“Eldest brother will be the
Chris Jnr sat silently starring out the window as they drove to the airport. Daniel tried to start a conversation with him many times, each time failing miserably.“Daddy will never give up on you like others… after all I am your biological father. Not everyone can replace me.” Daniel started the conversation once again, after boarding the flight.“Whatever.” Chris Jnr didn’t even spare him a glance as he looked outside the window once again.“I know you are feeling sad but don’t hold it in.” Daniel tried to comfort and at the same time, he didn’t forget to sling mud at Chris “Being a father is a big commitment, it’s hard for someone without any blood ties to hold on to such a commitment. Don’t blame him.”“Whatever.”“Your mother is already upset with everything that’s happened and feels really bad and guilty.” Daniel didn’t forget to brain wash along the way. How hard could it be to steer the thoughts of a six-year-old?“Don’t bring up the past and hurt her.” Daniel shrugged empathet
“I don’t want to play word games with you...” Daniel huffed as he tried to rein his temper. What he really wanted to do was beat up the smug, insufferable man before him who thought he was king of the jungle. Wonder what Daniel would do if he knew that Chris would not even need one hand to beat him to a state that even his mother wouldn't recognise him? Wonder how colourful Daniel's face would be if he knew that Chris was not king of the jungle but he is the legendary Lord of the Night? However, as they say, ignorance is bliss and this was Daniel's current state.“Not that you’d win even if you tried.” Chris smirked “But I really can’t bear to keep looking at your obnoxious face any longer than I have to. So please, is there anything else?”“What could I want from you other than the divorce that my lover requested and our kids?” Daniel spoke with an extremely disgusted expression. Their disgust for each other was mutual.“Your kids??” Chris hooked his lips as he taunted “Does Mr Holsto
“That reminds me, how is Emile? Any news?” Master finished his bowl of soup and asked about the matter that he was most concerned about.“Don’t ask about her.” Min scowled; both his and Lai-Li’s face darkened at the mention of Emile.“Why? Didn’t you two like them?”“Not anymore.” Min turned his head resentfully while Lai-Li lowered her head.“What exactly happened?” Master asked anxiously “Is she in trouble?”“She is trouble.” Min grumbled refusing to speak.“Min had gone to take a look…” Lai-Li spoke in a downcast tone “She seems to have gone back to her ex. She is not with the youngest master Walter anymore.”“What???” Master asked in shock, before shaking his head in denial “Something is terribly wrong. It cannot be like that…. It won’t….”“I don’t want to believe it either.” Lai-Li pouted “But Min saw that man swaggering in and out of the ancestral house of the Walter after passing on Emile’s request for divorce.”“No… I need to check on them… something isn’t right…” Master tried
